Abstract The utilization of diverse energy storage devices is imperative in the contemporary society. Taking advantage of solar power, a significant environmentally friendly and sustainable energy resource, holds great appeal for future storage of energy because it can solve the dilemma of fossil energy depletion and the resulting environmental problems once and for all. Recently, photo‐assisted energy storage devices, especially photo‐assisted rechargeable metal batteries, are rapidly developed owing to the ability to efficiently convert and store solar energy and the simple configuration, as well as the fact that conventional Li/Zn‐ion batteries are widely commercialized. Considering many puzzles arising from the rapid development of photo‐assisted rechargeable metal batteries, this review commences by introducing the fundamental concepts of batteries and photo‐electrochemistry, followed by an exploration of the current advancements in photo‐assisted rechargeable metal batteries. Specifically, it delves into the elucidation of device components, operating principles, types, and practical applications. Furthermore, this paper categorizes, specifies, and summarizes several detailed examples of photo‐assisted energy storage devices. Lastly, it addresses the challenges and bottlenecks faced by these energy storage systems while providing future perspectives to facilitate their transition from laboratory research to industrial implementation.

Summary: Selecting a suitable photocatalyst to establish the Z-scheme heterojunction which is accompanied by effective photogenerated hole and electron separation, is one of the advantageous strategies for efficient photocatalytic solar energy conversion. Therefore, we prepared a ZnIn2Se4 nanoparticles photocatalyst to build a double Z-scheme heterojunction with mixed-phase TiO2 nanofibers, boosting photocatalytic solar fuel preparation. The result of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the existence of interfacial chemical bonds and internal electric fields. The interfacial Ti-Se bond is regarded as a channel and the internal electric field serves as the driving force for electron transfer. And the composite photocatalyst exhibits a great hydrogen evolution rate of 0.11 mmol g−1 h−1. From a forward-working perspective, this work proposes a ZnIn2Se4 nanoparticles photocatalyst for efficient solar fuel conversion, promoting the application of bimetallic selenide photocatalyst in the field of photocatalysis.

Brassinosteroids (BRs) have received much research attention for their ability to mediate response to biotic and abiotic stress, with potential to counter the cadmium (Cd) toxicity in plants. Decreases in plant height and biomass in Cd-treated seedlings were alleviated by brassinosteroid analog 24-epibrassinolide (24-EBL) application, which has a negative effect on root growth. The Cd concentration significantly decreased in the roots and shoots under 24-EBL application, and high 24-EBL (0.1 µM) treatment was optimal for alleviating the deleterious effect of Cd stress. Fe and Mn accumulation in the 24-EBL-applied conditions resulted in an increase and decrease in rice varieties under Cd exposure, respectively. Additionally, 24-EBL improved the activity of antioxidant enzymes to reduce oxidative stress, decreased the nicotianamine (NA) content in shoots, and increased root NA accumulation. In molecular regulation, 24-EBL could directly alter the expression of Cd uptake/transport-related genes in the roots, including up-regulation of OsNRAMP1 and down-regulation of OsNRAMP5 and OsHMA2. The expression of genes involved in Fe homeostasis, including OsIRT1, OsNAS3, OsNAAT1, OsYSL2, OsYSL15, and OsTOM1, was up-regulated following 24-EBL application under Cd stress due to Fe accumulation and Cd-Fe antagonism. In addition, 24-EBL decreased the expression of OsHMA2, OsYSL2, and OsYSL15 in leaves, suggesting that BRs might inhibit Cd and Fe transport from roots to shoots. These novel findings highlight the critical role of BRs in mediating response of rice varieties to Cd exposure through their direct regulatory effects on Cd translocation and indirect effects on Fe metabolism.

Rechargeable metal‐ion batteries (MIBs) beyond lithium‐ion batteries based on Na, K, Mg, and Al metal electrodes which are earth‐abundant and low‐cost have been developed for large‐scale energy storage systems. MXenes, a type of transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, are discovered as electrodes for MIBs owing to their distinctive properties of large‐scale ultrathin conductive 2D structures, adjustable surface functional groups, regulable interlayer spacing, and high specific surface area. Herein, the properties of MXenes are summarized and the recent progress on MXene‐based materials for diversified MIBs (Li, Na, K, Mg, and Al‐ion batteries) is introduced. The main focus is on the synthesis and applications of MXene‐based materials in MIBs, and their roles in electrochemical reactions. Further examples are provided to demonstrate the significant function of MXene‐based composite as active materials, substrates, collectors, and precursors in different MIBs, highlighting the enormous potential of MXene‐based materials to construct advanced electrodes. This review expects to offer a deep understanding of the relationship between the electrochemical performance and the MXene‐based electrodes, which will promote more novel and creative breakthroughs in the MXenes‐based electrodes for MIBs.

Magnesium (Mg) batteries (MBs), as post-lithium-ion batteries, have received great attention in recent years due to their advantages of high energy density, low cost, and safety insurance. However, the formation of passivation layers on the surface of Mg metal anode and the poor compatibility between Mg metal and conventional electrolytes during charge-discharge cycles seriously affect the performance of MBs. The great possibility of generating Mg dendrites has also caused controversy among researchers. Moreover, the regulation of Mg deposition and the enhancement of battery cycle stability is largely limited by interfacial stability between Mg metal anode and electrolyte. In this review, recent advances in interfacial science and engineering of MBs are summarized and discussed. Special attention is given to interfacial chemistry including passivation layer formation, incompatibilities, ion transport, and dendrite growth. Strategies for building stable electrode/interfaces, such as anode designing and electrolyte modification, construction of artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers, and development of solid-state electrolytes to improve interfacial contacts and inhibit Mg dendrite and passivation layer formation, are reviewed. Innovative approaches, representative examples, and challenges in developing high-performance anodes are described in detail. Based on the review of these strategies, reference is provided for future research to improve the performance of MBs, especially in terms of interface and anode design.

Abstract There is growing production for lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) to satisfy the booming development renewable energy storage systems. Meanwhile, amounts of spent LIBs have been generated and will become more soon. Therefore, the proper disposal of these spent LIBs is of significant importance. Graphite is the dominant anode in most commercial LIBs. This review specifically focuses on the recent advances in the recycling of graphite anode (GA) from spent LIBs. It covers the significance of GA recycling from spent LIBs, the introduction of the GA aging mechanisms in LIBs, the summary of the developed GA recovery strategies, and the highlight of reclaimed GA for potential applications. In addition, the prospect related to the future challenges of GA recycling is given at the end. It is expected that this review will provide practical guidance for researchers engaged in the field of spent LIBs recycling.

Abstract The electrocatalysts are widely applied in lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries to selectively accelerate the redox kinetics behavior of Li2S, in which bifunctional active sites are established, thereby improving the electrochemical performance of the battery. Considering that the Li–S battery is a complex closed “black box” system, the internal redox reaction routes and active sites cannot be directly observed and monitored especially due to the distribution of potential active‐site structures and their dynamic reconstruction. Empirical evidence demonstrates that traditional electrochemical test methods and theoretical calculations only probe the net result of multi‐factors on an average and whole scale. Herein, based on the amorphous TiO2‐x@Ni selective bifunctional model catalyst, these limitations are overcome by developing a system that couples the light field and in situ irradiated X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy to synergistically convert the “black box” battery into a “see‐through” battery for direct observation of the charge transportation, thus revealing that amorphous TiO2‐x and Ni nanoparticle as the oxidation and reduction sites selectively promote the decomposition and nucleation of Li2S, respectively. This work provides a universal method to achieve a deeper mechanistic understanding of bidirectional sulfur electrochemistry.

Abstract Sophisticated efficient electrocatalysts are essential to rectifying the shuttle effect and realizing the high performance of flexible lithium‐sulfur batteries (LSBs). Phase transformation of MoSe2 from the 2H phase to the 1T phase has been proven to be a significant method to improve the catalytic activity. However, precisely controllable phase engineering of MoSe2 has rarely been reported. Herein, by in situ Li ions intercalation in MoSe2, a precisely controllable phase evolution from 2H‐MoSe2 to 1T‐MoSe2 was realized. More importantly, the definite functional relationship between cut‐off voltage and phase structure was first identified for phase engineering through in situ observation and modulation methods. The sulfur host (CNFs/1T‐MoSe2) presents high charge density, strong polysulfides adsorption, and catalytic kinetics. Moreover, Li‐S cells based on it display capacity retention of 875.3 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles at 1 C and an areal capacity of 8.71 mAh cm−2 even at a high sulfur loading of 8.47 mg cm−2. Furthermore, the flexible pouch cell exhibiting decent performance will endow a promising potential in the wearable energy storage field. This study proposes an effective strategy to precisely control the phase structure of MoSe2, which may provide the reference to fabricate the highly efficient electrocatalysts for LSBs and other energy systems.

Abstract The identity of charge transfer process at the heterogeneous interface plays an important role in improving the stability, activity, and selectivity of heterojunction catalysts. And, in situ irradiation X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) coupled with UV light optical fiber measurement setup is developed to monitor and observe the photoelectron transfer process between heterojunction. However, the in‐depth relationship of binding energy and irradiation light wavelength is missing based on the fact that the incident light is formed by coupling light with different wavelengths. Furthermore, a quantitative understanding of the charge transfer numbers and binding energy remains elusive. Herein, based on the g‐C3N4/SnO2 model catalyst, a wavelength‐dependent Boltzmann function to describe the changes of binding energy and wavelength through utilizing a continuously adjustable monochromatic light irradiation XPS technique is established. Using this method, this study further reveals that the electrons transfer number can be readily calculated forming an asymptotic model. This methodology provides a blueprint for deep understanding of the charge‐transfer rules in heterojunction and facilitates the future development of highly active advanced catalysts.

Abstract The realistic application of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries has been severely hindered by the sluggish conversion kinetics of polysulfides (LiPS) and inhomogeneous deposition of Li2S at high sulfur loading and low electrolyte/sulfur ratio (E/S). Herein, a flexible Li–S battery architecture based on electrocatalyzed cathodes made of interfacial engineered TiC nanofibers and in situ grown vertical graphene are developed. Integrated 1D/2D heterostructured electrocatalysts are realized to enable highly improved Li+ and electron transportation together with significantly enhanced affinity to LiPS, which effectively accelerate the conversion kinetics between sulfur species, and thus induce homogeneous deposition of Li2S in the catalyzed cathodes. Consequently, highly active electro‐electrocatalysts‐based cells exhibit remarkable rate capability at 2C with a high specific capacity of 971 mAh g−1. Even at ultra‐high sulfur loading and low E/S ratio, the battery still delivers a high areal capacity of 9.1 mAh cm−2, with a flexible pouch cell being demonstrated to power a LED array at different bending angles with a high capacity over 100 cycles. This work puts forward a novel pathway for the rational design of effective nanofiber electrocatalysts for cathodes of high‐performance Li–S batteries.

Abstract Vertical graphene (VG), possessing superior chemical, physical, and structural peculiarities, holds great promise as a building block for constructing a high‐energy density lithium‐sulfur (Li‐S) battery. Therefore, it is desirable to develop a new VG growth technique with a novel structure to enable wide applications. Herein, we devise a novel complex permittivity‐dependent plasma confinement‐assisted VG growth technique, via asymmetric growing a VG layer on one side of N‐doped carbon nanofibers for the first time, using a unique lab‐built high flux plasma‐enhanced chemical vapor deposition system, as a bifunctional nanofiber membrane to construct Li‐S batteries with low negative/positive (N/P) and electrolyte/sulfur (E/S) ratios. The unique nanofiber membrane could simultaneously protect the cathode and anode, enabling an excellent electrochemical performance with low N/P and E/S ratios in Li‐S batteries. Such a full cell delivers high gravimetric energy density and volumetric energy density of 340 Wh kg−1 and 547 Wh L−1, respectively, at low N/P (2:1) and E/S (4:1) ratios. Furthermore, a pouch cell achieves a high areal capacity of 7.1 mAh cm−2 at a sulfur loading of 6 mg cm−2. This work put forward a novel pathway for the design of high‐energy density Li‐S batteries.

Abstract Rechargeable zinc–air batteries (ZABs) have attracted great interests for emerging energy applications. Nevertheless, one of the major bottlenecks lies in the fabrication of bifunctional catalysts with high electrochemical activity, high stability, low cost, and free of precious and rare metals. Herein, a high‐performance metal‐free bifunctional catalyst is synthesized in a single step by regulating radicals within the recently invented high‐flux plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (HPECVD) system equipped with in situ plasma diagnostics. Thus‐derived (N, O)‐doped vertical few‐layer graphene film (VGNO) is of high areal population with perfect vertical orientation, tunable catalytic states, and configurations, thus enabling significantly enhanced electrochemical kinetic processes of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with reference to milestone achievements to date. Application of such VGNO to aqueous ZABs (A‐ZABs) and flexible solid‐state ZABs (S‐ZABs) exhibited high discharge power density and excellent cycling stability, which remarkably outperformed ZABs using benchmarked precious‐metal based catalysts. The current work provides a solid basis toward developing low‐cost, resource‐sustainable, and eco‐friendly ZABs without using any metals for outstanding OER and ORR catalysis.

Abstract Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries have been regarded as a promising next‐generation energy storage technology for their ultrahigh theoretical energy density compared with those of the traditional lithium‐ion batteries. However, the practical applications of Li–S batteries are still blocked by notorious problems such as the shuttle effect and the uncontrollable growth of lithium dendrites. Recently, the rapid development of electrospinning technology provides reliable methods in preparing flexible nanofibers materials and is widely applied to Li–S batteries serving as hosts, interlayers, and separators, which are considered as a promising strategy to achieve high energy density flexible Li–S batteries. In this review, a fundamental introduction of electrospinning technology and multifarious electrospinning‐based nanofibers used in flexible Li–S batteries are presented. More importantly, crucial parameters of specific capacity, electrolyte/sulfur (E/S) ratio, sulfur loading, and cathode tap density are emphasized based on the proposed mathematic model, in which the electrospinning‐based nanofibers are used as important components in Li–S batteries to achieve high gravimetric (WG) and volume (WV) energy density of 500 Wh kg−1 and 700 Wh L−1, respectively. These systematic summaries not only provide the principles in nanofiber‐based electrode design but also propose enlightening directions for the commercialized Li–S batteries with high WG and WV.

Single or combined plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) strains were widely applied as microbial agents in cadmium (Cd) phytoextraction since they could promote plant growth and facilitate Cd uptake. However, the distinct functional effects between single and combined inoculants have not yet been elucidated. In this study, a field experiment was conducted with single, double and triple inoculants to clarify their divergent impacts on plant growth, Cd uptake and accumulation at different growth stages of Brassica juncea L. by three different PGPB strains (Cupriavidus SaCR1, Burkholdria SaMR10 and Sphingomonas SaMR12). The results show that SaCR1 + SaMR10 + SaMR12 combined inoculants were more effective for growth promotion at the bud stage, flowering stage, and mature stage. Single/combined PGPB agents of SaMR12 and SaMR10 were more efficient for Cd uptake promotion. In addition, SaMR10 + SaMR12 combined the inoculants greatly facilitated Cd uptake and accumulation in shoots, and enhanced the straw Cd extraction rates by 156%. Therefore, it is concluded that the application of PGPB inoculants elevated Cd phytoextraction efficiency, and the combined inoculants were more conductive than single inoculants. These results enriched the existing understanding of PGPB agents and provided technical support for the further exploration of PGPB interacting mechanisms strains on plant growth and Cd phytoextraction, which helped establish an efficient plant–microbe combined phytoremediation system and augment the phytoextraction efficiency in Cd-contaminated farmlands.

Abstract Vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) present an exciting avenue for nanoelectronics due to their predetermined orientation and exceptional transport capabilities along the tube length, with the potential to be employed in a variety of optoelectronic applications. However, growth of VACNTs using conventional chemical vapor deposition (CVD) methods requires elevated temperatures (>720 °C) and therefore, the suitability of commonly used transparent conductive oxide (TCO) glasses, such as fluorine‐doped tin oxide (FTO) and indium‐tin oxide (ITO), as the substrates for nanotube growth are limited by their temperature‐sensitive nature. Here, the successful growth of multi‐walled VACNTs directly onto commonly used TCO glasses, FTO and ITO, using the photo‐thermal chemical vapor deposition (PTCVD) growth method is reported. The benefit of reflection, within the infrared region, of the TCO substrate and the effect of surface roughness on the growth of VACNTs is investigated. The application of VACNTs on ITO in inverted planar perovskite solar cells is investigated, which shows superior charge transfer, larger grain sizes in the perovskite film, and a champion device efficiency approaching 16%.

Abstract Background Rice is a major dietary source of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) for populations consuming rice as the staple food. Excessive Cd and As accumulation in rice grain is of great concern worldwide, especially in South China where soil contamination with heavy metals and metalloids is widespread. It is important to reduce Cd and As accumulation in rice grain through selection and breeding of cultivars accumulating low levels of Cd or As. Results To assess the genetic and environmental variations in the concentrations of Cd and As in rice grains, 471 locally adapted high-yielding rice cultivars were grown at three moderately contaminated sites in South China for two years. Cadmium and As concentrations in brown rice varied by 10 – 32 and 2.5 – 4 fold, respectively. Genotype (G), environment (E) and G x E interactions were highly significant factors explaining the variations. Brown rice Cd concentration was found to correlate positively with the heading date among different cultivars, whereas As concentration and heading date correlated negatively. There was a significant and negative correlation between grain Cd and As concentrations. Conclusions Eight and 6 rice cultivars were identified as stable low accumulators of Cd and As, respectively, based on the multiple site and season trials. These cultivars are likely to be compliant with the grain Cd or As limits of the Chinese Food Safety Standards when grown in moderately contaminated paddy soils in South China.

The present investigation reported on a novel oxygen-assisted etching growth method that can directly transform wafer-scale plain VO2 thin films into pyramidal-like VO2 nanostructures with highly improved field-emission properties. The oxygen applied during annealing played a key role in the formation of the special pyramidal-like structures by introducing thin oxygen-rich transition layers on the top surfaces of the VO2 crystals. An etching related growth and transformation mechanism for the synthesis of nanopyramidal films was proposed. Structural characterizations confirmed the formation of a composite VO2 structure of monoclinic M1 (P21/c) and Mott insulating M2 (C2/m) phases for the films at room temperature. Moreover, by varying the oxygen concentration, the nanocrystal morphology of the VO2 films could be tuned, ranging over pyramidal, dot, and/or twin structures. These nanopyramidal VO2 films showed potential benefits for application such as temperature−regulated field emission devices. For one typical sample deposited on a 3-inch silicon substrate, its emission current (measured at 6 V/μm) increased by about 1000 times after the oxygen-etching treatment, and the field enhancement factor β reached as high as 3810 and 1620 for the M and R states, respectively. The simple method reported in the present study may provide a protocol for building a variety of large interesting surfaces for VO2-based device applications.

Constructing array structures for transition metal-based electrocatalysts is an effective approach to enhance the overall water splitting performance. However, compared with traditional disordered array structures, parallel array structures with an ordered arrangement for transition metal-based materials have been barely reported. Herein, via an innovative microfluidic spinning technology, we synthesized a parallel array structured Co9S8/nitrogen doped carbon nanocages/carbon fiber (p-Co9S8/NC/CF) composite electrocatalyst, where the composite fibers were precisely controlled to grow uniformly along the same direction. When applied as an electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), pCo9S8/NC/CF exhibits superior activity and stability to the traditional disordered array structured counterpart (Co9S8/NC/CF) and the commercial RuO2 catalyst. XAS analysis and DFT calculations confirm that the numerous unoccupied coordination Co–S bonds can optimize the adsorption of OH− and the desorption of O2 in the OER process, which can accelerate the rate-determining step (*OH / *O), consequently enhancing the OER performance. Furthermore, when applied in overall water splitting, the p-Co9S8/NC/CF‖p-Co9S8/NC/CF electrolyzer exhibits superior performance to the commercial Pt/ C‖RuO2 electrolyzer. This work provides an effective strategy for structural design through a novel preparation technology and offers a deep insight into structure engineering for transition metal-based electrocatalysts.
