Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been the leading cause of death worldwide for many years. In recent years, exosomes have gained extensive attention in the cardiovascular system due to their excellent biocompatibility. Studies have extensively researched miRNAs in exosomes and found that they play critical roles in various physiological and pathological processes in the cardiovascular system. These processes include promoting or inhibiting inflammatory responses, promoting angiogenesis, participating in cell proliferation and migration, and promoting pathological progression such as fibrosis. Aim of review: This systematic review examines the role of exosomes in various cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, ischemia–reperfusion injury, heart failure and cardiomyopathy. It also presents the latest treatment and prevention methods utilizing exosomes. The study aims to provide new insights and approaches for preventing and treating cardiovascular diseases by exploring the relationship between exosomes and these conditions. Furthermore, the review emphasizes the potential clinical use of exosomes as biomarkers for diagnosing cardiovascular diseases. Key scientific concepts of review: Exosomes are nanoscale vesicles surrounded by lipid bilayers that are secreted by most cells in the body. They are heterogeneous, varying in size and composition, with a diameter typically ranging from 40 to 160 nm. Exosomes serve as a means of information communication between cells, carrying various biologically active substances, including lipids, proteins, and small RNAs such as miRNAs and lncRNAs. As a result, they participate in both physiological and pathological processes within the body.

Abstract Background The 2018/2023 ESC/ESH Guidelines underlined a gap how baseline cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk predicted blood pressure (BP) lowering benefits. Further, 2017 ACC/AHA Guideline and 2021 WHO Guideline recommended implementation studies about intensive BP control. Now, to bridge these guideline gaps, we conducted a post hoc analysis to validate whether the baseline CVD risk influences the effectiveness of the intensive BP control strategy, which was designed by China Rural Hypertension Control Project (CRHCP). Methods This is a post hoc analysis of CRHCP, among which participants were enrolled except those having CVD history, over 80 years old, or missing data. Subjects were stratified into quartiles by baseline estimated CVD risk and then grouped into intervention and usual care group according to original assignment in CRHCP. Background Serum corin has been associated with stroke in observational studies, but the underlying causality is uncertain. This study examined the causal association between corin and stroke through Mendelian randomization study. Methods and Results In the Gusu cohort, serum corin was assayed at baseline, and stroke incidents were prospectively obtained during 10 years of follow‐up. Single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in CORIN were genotyped by MassArray for 2310 participants (mean age, 53 years; 39% men). Seventeen SNPs passed the Hardy–Weinberg test and were considered the potential instruments. Only 1 SNP (rs2271037) determined variability of serum corin was significantly associated with stroke even after adjusting for conventional risk factors (hazard ratio [HR], 1.36 [95% CI, 1.00–1.85]). The weighted genetic risk score generated from the SNP‐corin associations was significantly associated with stroke (HR, 2.01 [95% CI, 1.15–3.51]). Using this genetic risk score as the instrument, 1‐sample Mendelian randomization analysis found a significant HR of stroke per‐SD higher log2‐transformed corin (HR, 1.37 [95% CI, 1.07–1.76]). The inverse variance–weighted analysis based on the SNP‐corin and SNP‐stroke associations found that the HR of stroke pre‐SD higher log2‐transformed corin was 5.92 (95% CI, 2.23–15.72). The effect estimates stayed consistent regardless of an individual SNP being removed from the instruments. An almost identical effect estimate was also confirmed by multiple other 2‐sample Mendelian randomization methods. Conclusions Genetically determined variations of serum corin concentration were significantly associated with the risk of stroke in Chinese adults. Elevated serum corin may be a risk factor for stroke.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have a complex pathogenesis and pose a major threat to human health. Cardiomyocytes have a low regenerative capacity, and their death is a key factor in the morbidity and mortality of many CVDs. Cardiomyocyte death can be regulated by specific signaling pathways known as programmed cell death (PCD), including apoptosis, necroptosis, autophagy, pyroptosis, and ferroptosis, etc. Abnormalities in PCD can lead to the development of a variety of cardiovascular diseases, and there are also molecular-level interconnections between different PCD pathways under the same cardiovascular disease model. Currently, the link between programmed cell death in cardiomyocytes and cardiovascular disease is not fully understood. This review describes the molecular mechanisms of programmed death and the impact of cardiomyocyte death on cardiovascular disease development. Emphasis is placed on a summary of drugs and potential therapeutic approaches that can be used to treat cardiovascular disease by targeting and blocking programmed cell death in cardiomyocytes.

Summary: p53 regulates multiple signaling pathways and maintains cell homeostasis under conditions of DNA damage and oxidative stress. Although USP7 has been shown to promote p53 stability via deubiquitination, the USP7-p53 activation mechanism has remained unclear. Here, we propose that DNA damage induces reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and activates ATM-CHK2, and CHK2 then phosphorylates USP7 at S168 and T231. USP7 phosphorylation is essential for its deubiquitination activity toward p53. USP7 also deubiquitinates CHK2 at K119 and K131, increasing CHK2 stability and creating a positive feedback loop between CHK2 and USP7. Compared to peri-tumor tissues, thyroid cancer and colon cancer tissues show higher CHK2 and phosphorylated USP7 (S168, T231) levels, and these levels are positively correlated. Collectively, our results uncover a phosphorylation-deubiquitination positive feedback loop involving the CHK2-USP7 axis that supports the stabilization of p53 and the maintenance of cell homeostasis.

Abstract Background Cardiovascular disease (CVD) brings high mortality and economic burden to patients, especially in rural areas. Simple, low-cost abdominal adiposity measures may help identify individuals with increased CVD risk. It is unclear that which obesity indices is the best to predict CVD in hypertensive people. Methods Northeast China Rural Cardiovascular Health Study (NCRCHS) is a prospective cohort study in a general population in Northeast China. The study examined the cardiovascular health from 2013 to 2015, and follow-up captured the CVD incidence in 2018. Baseline waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip (WHR)and body mass index (BMI) were calculated and analyzed in relation to the CVD incidence. Results A total of 4244 hypertensive adults without pre-existing CVD at baseline were included in this analysis (age 35–92 years; 2108 men). Over a median follow-up of 4.66 years, a total of 290 CVD cases (6.83%) were documented during the follow-up. Baseline WHtR showed a significant positive association with CVD incidence, even after adjusting for age, sex, diabetes, drinking, smoking, SBP, DBP, Triglyceride, HDL-C, LDL-C, and TC (Hazard Ratios per SD of WHtR ranging from 1.03 to 1.31, p = 0.017). Reclassification and discrimination analyses indicated WHtR addition could improve the conventional model for predicting adverse outcomes within 4 years. Moreover, WHtR predicted the CVD incidence better than other obesity indices (BMI, WC, WHR). Conclusion These findings support a positive association between WHtR and CVD incidence in CVD-free hypertensive adults. WHtR can be used to predict CVD incidence in hypertensive adults.

Abstract Post-translational modifications (PTMs) are a covalent processing process of proteins after translation. Proteins are capable of playing their roles only after being modified, so as to maintain the normal physiological function of cells. As a key modification of protein post-translational modification, ubiquitination is an essential element, which forms an enzyme-linked reaction through ubiquitin-activating enzyme, ubiquitin binding enzyme, and ubiquitin ligase, aiming to regulate the expression level and function of cellular proteins. Nedd4 family is the largest group of ubiquitin ligases, including 9 members, such as Nedd4-1, Nedd4L (Nedd4-2), WWP1, WWP2, ITCH, etc. They could bind to substrate proteins through their WW domain and play a dominant role in the ubiquitination process, and then participate in various pathophysiological processes of cardiovascular diseases (such as hypertension, myocardial hypertrophy, heart failure, etc.). At present, the role of Nedd4L in the cardiovascular field is not fully understood. This review aims to summarize the progress and mechanism of Nedd4L in cardiovascular diseases, and provide potential perspective for the clinical treatment or prevention of related cardiovascular diseases by targeting Nedd4L.

Objective: Previous studies have investigated the relationships between alcohol and ventricular structure, but few studies have evaluated the relation between alcohol consumption and the atrium size. This study aims to test the association between alcohol consumption and left atrium (LA) size in a general population. Methods: A population-based sample of 10 211 subjects aged ≥ 35 years and free from hypertension at baseline were followed from January 2012 to August 2013. Left atrial enlargement (LAE) was defined as the ratio of LA diameter to body surface area exceeding 2.4 cm/m2 in both genders. Independent factors for LAE were estimated by multiple logistic regression analyses. Results：The study included 10 211 participants (4 751 men and 5 460 women). Abstract Background To investigate the combined effect of hypertension and hyperuricemia to the risk of ischemic stroke in a rural Chinese population. Methods The cross-sectional study was conducted from 2012 to 2013 in a rural area of China. After exclusion for missing data, we finally included 11,731 participants into analysis. Results After adjusting for age, current smoking, current drinking, BMI, TG, HDL-C and eGFR, hypertension was significantly associated with ischemic stroke in men (OR: 2.783, 95% CI: 1.793, 4.320) and in women (OR: 4.800, 95% CI: 2.945, 7.822). However, hyperuricemia was significantly associated with ischemic stroke only in women (OR: 1.888, 95% CI: 1.244, 2.864). After full adjustment, participants with both hypertension and hyperuricemia had 8.9 times higher risk than those without them. Finally, the interaction between hypertension and hyperuricemia was statistically significant only in women rather than in men after full adjustment. Conclusions This study demonstrated the positive correlations between hypertension, hyperuricemia and ischemic stroke. Our study also demonstrated the joint effect between hypertension and hyperuricemia towards ischemic stroke only in women, not in men.

Abstract Background We reported a relatively high rate of MetS in rural Northeast residents in 2012–2013. Many strategies like health knowledge propagation and lifestyle modification have been taken to help rural residents decrease metabolic disorders. Hence, we held the present follow-up study in order to figure the changes of metabolic parameters and the possible reasons together with the evaluation of MetS incidence and associated risk factors. Methods A population-based sample of 8147 rural Northeast Chinese residents aged ≥ 35 years at baseline were followed up from 2012–2013 to 2015–2017. MetS was diagnosed following the unify criteria in 2009 using the Asian specific criteria. Results Among residents with MetS at baseline, value of systolic, diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, HDL-C decreased while waist circumference increased in both genders in follow-up. Discrepancy of trend in body mass index, LDL-C and estimated GFR existed between male and female. Besides, triglyceride increased, and fast glucose decreased in female only. The alterations of dietary pattern might be accountable for those changes. Among residents without MetS at baseline, the cumulative incidence of newly diagnosed MetS was 24.0% (25.8% for male; 22.3% for female). As the number of metabolic disorders increased at baseline, the incidence of MetS also increased (zero metabolic disorder: 8.3%; one metabolic disorder: 17.1%; two metabolic disorders: 35.4%). In male residents, bad living habits like smoking and drinking were associated with increasing risk of Mets while in female, higher risk of MetS was more likely relevant to dietary pattern. Conclusion Metabolic parameters changes during the past years and seem to be associated with alteration of diet pattern. Incidence of MetS still high among rural Northeast Chinese. The risk factors of higher incidence of MetS show gender discrepancy which make the prophylaxis and control of MetS more effective and directive in rural residents.

The relationship between serum spermidine levels and future cardiovascular disease risk has not yet been well elucidated in the general population based on community studies. Using a nested case-control study, we estimated the association between serum spermidine level and future stroke. New stroke cases had higher baseline levels of spermidine than controls [182.8 (141.8–231.5) vs. 152.0 (124.3–193.0), P < 0.001]. After multivariable adjustment, individuals with spermidine ≥ 205.9 nmol/L (T3) higher risks of stroke (HR 5.02, 95% CI 1.58–16.02) with the lowest quartile (< 136.9 nmol/L) as reference. The association between serum spermidine levels and risk of stroke seemed to be consistent and was reproducible in our cross-sectional studies. In addition, comparisons of the areas under receiver operator characteristics curves confirmed that a model including spermidine had better discrimination than without (0.755 vs. 0.715, P = 0.04). Here we report a close relationship exists between serum spermidine levels and risk of stroke.

Objectives This study aimed to reveal the association between metabolic score for insulin resistance (MetS-IR) and the risk of mildly decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and explore the evaluation effect of MetS-IR on the progress of eGFR decline.Study design A cross-sectional study.Setting and participants A total of 11 956 rural participants (aged ≥35 years) from northeastern China were enrolled in the study. After excluding the subjects whose data were not integrated or who met the exclusion criteria, we finally obtained 11 042 participants in the present study.Main outcome measures Mildly decreased eGFR was defined as 60–90 mL/min/1.73 m2.Results The prevalence of mildly decreased eGFR in the general population was 36.9%. After adjustment of covariates, each SD increment of MetS-IR could bring 26.3% additional risk of mildly decreased eGFR (OR: 1.263, 95% CI: 1.066 to 1.497, p=0.007). When MetS-IR was classified into four levels by quartile, we observed participants in the top level had 3.032-fold risk of mildly decreased eGFR (OR: 3.032, 95% CI: 1.841 to 4.991, p

Objectives The sensitivity of ECG for detecting left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is low. The aim of this study was to explore a better ECG criterion for screening LVH in a large general Chinese population.Design Case–control study.Setting China Medical University in Shenyang, China.Participants All permanent residents in Dawa, Zhangwu and Liaoyang aged 35 years or older were invited. Participants with unqualified data, pacemaker rhythm, frequent premature ventricular beats, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, complete bundle branch block, myocardial infarction or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy were excluded. Abstract Background The new ACC/AHA hypertension guideline lower the definition of hypertension from 140/90 mmHg to 130/80 mmHg and eliminate the category of prehypertension thus increasing the prevalence of hypertension. A purpose of this study is to explore the applicability of the new guidelines in rural China. Methods In total, 3229 participants aged ≥35 years and free of stroke at baseline were followed for up to 4.8 years during 2012 to 2017 in a rural community-based prospective cohort study of Xifeng County. The hazard ratio (HR) and 95% Confidence interval (CI) of different blood pressure (BP) levels for risk of incident stroke were analyzed by multivariable Cox proportional hazard models. Abstract Background Few studies investigate sex difference in stroke incidence in rural China hypertensive population. Methods A total of 5097 hypertensive patients aged ≥35 years (mean age, 56.3 ± 11.2 years; 43.8% men) were included in our analysis with a median follow-up 8.4 years in Fuxin county of Liaoning province in China. Cox proportional hazard models were used to analyze the association between the potential factors and incident stroke. Results We observed 501 new strokes (310 ischemic, 186 hemorrhagic, and 5 unclassified stroke) during the follow-up. The overall incidence of stroke was 1235.21 per 100,000 person-years; for men, the rates were 1652.51 and 920.80 for women. This sex difference in all stroke can be explained by approximately 25% through age, systolic blood pressure, body mass index, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, current smoking, current drinking, antihypertensive drugs, education and physical activity. Subgroup analysis indicated that in hemorrhagic stroke this sex difference was more remarkable (63.89% can be explained). Conclusions The incidence of stroke was higher in men than that in women and this difference was partly explained by several traditional cardiovascular risk factors.

Background: Prolonged heart rate-corrected QT (QTc) interval has been associated with incident cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in general Western populations. However, this association is unclear in Asian population. We aim to estimate the association between QTc interval and incident CVD in a general Chinese population.Methods: We analyzed 8,867 participants age ≥35 years and free of CVD at baseline in the Northeast China Rural Cardiovascular Health Study. A resting 12-lead electrocardiogram was performed on all participants, and QTc interval computed using the Framingham formula. Cox proportional hazards models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for associations between QTc interval and incident stroke, coronary heart disease, and combined CVD events.Results: Over a median follow-up of 4.66 years, a total of 439 CVD events occurred (298 stroke cases and 152 CHD cases). After full adjustment, prolonged QTc defined by a sex-specific cutoff was associated with increased risk of developing stroke (HR: 1.82, 95% CI 1.20–2.75, P = 0.004) and combined CVD (HR: 1.52, 95% CI 1.05–2.19, P = 0.026). Spline analyses demonstrated no clear thresholds; when modeled as a linear relationship, each 10 ms increase of QTc interval was associated with an HR of 1.12 (95% CI 1.06–1.19, P < 0.001) for stroke and an HR of 1.10 (95% CI 1.05–1.15, P < 0.001) for combined CVD. Baseline QTc interval was not associated with incident CHD with either modeling strategy.Conclusions: Baseline QTc interval is associated with incident stroke and CVD in adults without prior CVD from a general Chinese population.

Objectives The present study estimated the percentage of rural Chinese adults with hypertension and recommended pharmacological antihypertensive treatment according to the 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) guideline compared with the 2010 Chinese Guideline for the Management of Hypertension.Design Cross-sectional study.Setting Three counties in rural areas of northeastern China.Participants A total of 11 747 eligible individuals aged ≥35 years from rural areas of northeastern China were selected for the present analysis.Main outcome measures The percentage of rural Chinese adults with hypertension and recommended pharmacological antihypertensive treatment according to the 2017 ACC/AHA guideline and the 2010 Chinese Guideline for the Management of Hypertension, and the proportion of rural Chinese adults taking antihypertensive medication with blood pressure (BP) above the 2017 ACC/AHA guideline and the 2010 Chinese guideline treatment goal.Results The mean age of the study population was 53.9±10.8 years and 53.7% of the participants were women. According to the 2017 ACC/AHA guideline and the 2010 Chinese guideline, the crude prevalence of hypertension was 72.2% and 49.8%, respectively, and the percentage of recommended antihypertensive medications for rural Chinese adults was 56.4% and 51.4%, respectively. Among these rural Chinese adults taking antihypertensive medications, 96.7% had above goal BP according to the 2017 ACC/AHA guideline compared with 86.1% with above goal BP according to the 2010 Chinese guideline.Conclusion The present analysis demonstrated that compared with the 2010 Chinese guideline, the 2017 ACC/AHA hypertension guideline will result in a substantial increase in the percentage of rural Chinese adults defined as having hypertension and a small increase in the percentage of adults who are recommended antihypertensive medications. More intensive management is suggested to improve the control rate of hypertension among rural Chinese adults.

Abstract Background Many previous clinical studies have reported that prolongation of the QT interval corrected for heart rate (QTc) is associated with an increased risk of sudden cardiac death and all-cause mortality. This study aimed to explore associations between serum electrolytes and QTc prolongation in the north-eastern Chinese rural general population. Methods We performed a cross-sectional study including 10,334 (4820 men and 5514 women) from the general population aged ≥35 years in the Liaoning Province from 2012 to 2013. Anthropometric measurements, laboratory examinations and self-reported lifestyle factor information, echocardiography and electrocardiogram were collected by trained personnel. The associations between serum electrolytes and QTc prolongation were tested using multiple linear regression and logistic regression analyses. Results The mean QTc interval were 415.6 ± 18.8 and 470.1 ± 23.1 ms in normal group and QTc prolongation group respectively. The prevalence of QTc prolongation increased significantly with a decrease in serum potassium and an increase in magnesium. Stepwise multiple linear regression showed that age, hypertension, waist circumference were prominently positive associated with QTc interval both in male and female population. But serum potassium was significantly inversely associated with QTc interval. Serum magnesium and calcium also showed a positive relationship with QTc interval. Furthermore, multiple logistic regression found that lower quartile of serum potassium had higher risk for QTc prolongation, especially in female population (Q2 vs. Q4: OR: 1.54, 95%CI: 1.01–2.35; Q1 vs. Q4: OR: 2.02, 95%CI: 1.36–3.01). In addition, the higher serum magnesium increased the risk of QTc prolongation, which was significantly only in male population. Conclusions In present Chinese rural general population, even with normal range, a decrease in serum potassium and an increase in serum magnesium are important risk factors for QTc prolongation.

Background/Aims: Many clinical and experimental studies have shown that treatment with statins could prevent myocardial hypertrophy and remodeling induced by hypertension and myocardial infarction. But the molecular mechanism was not clear. We aimed to investigate the beneficial effects of atorvastatin on hypertension-induced myocardial hypertrophy and remodeling in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) with the hope of revealing other potential mechanisms or target pathways to interpret the pleiotropic effects of atorvastatin on myocardial hypertrophy. Methods: The male and age-matched animals were randomly divided into three groups: control group (8 WKY), SHR (8 rats) and intervention group (8 SHR). The SHR in intervention group were administered by oral gavage with atorvastatin (suspension in distilled water, 10 mg/Kg once a day) for 6 weeks, and the other two groups were administered by gavage with equal quantity distilled water. Blood pressure of rats was measured every weeks using a standard tail cuff sphygmomanometer. Left ventricular (LV) dimensions were measured from short-axis views of LV under M-mode tracings using Doppler echocardiograph. Cardiomyocyte apoptosis was assessed by the TUNEL assay. The protein expression of C/EBPβ, PGC-1α and UCP3 were detected by immunohistochemistry or Western blot analysis. Results: At the age of 16 weeks, the mean arterial pressure of rats in three groups were 103.6±6.1, 151.8±12.5 and 159.1±6.2 mmHg respectively, and there wasn’t statistically significant difference between the SHR and intervention groups. Staining with Masson’s trichrome demonstrated that the increased interstitial fibrosis of LV and ventricular remodeling in the SHR group were attenuated by atorvastatin treatment. Echocardiography examination exhibited that SHR with atorvastatin treatment showed an LV wall thickness that was obviously lower than that of water-treated SHR. In hypertrophic myocardium, accompanied by increasing C/EBPβ expression and the percentage of TUNEL-positive cells, the expression of Bcl-2/Bax ratio, PGC-1α and UCP3 were reduced, all of which could be abrogated by treatment with atorvastatin for 6 weeks. Conclusion: This study further confirmed that atorvastatin could attenuate myocardial hypertrophy and remodeling in SHR by inhibiting apoptosis and reversing changes in mitochondrial metabolism. The C/EBPβ/PGC-1α/UCP3 signaling pathway might also be important for elucidating the beneficial pleiotropic effects of atorvastatin on myocardial hypertrophy.

Abstract Background Various anthropometric indices can be used to estimate obesity, and it is important to determine which one is the best in predicting the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and to define the optimal cut-off point for the best index. Methods This cross-sectional study investigated a consecutive sample of 11,247 adults, who had lived in rural areas of China and were older than 35 years of age. Eight obesity indices, including the body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), abdominal volume index (AVI), body adiposity index (BAI), body roundness index (BRI) and a body shape index (ABSI) were investigated. The risk of CHD was evaluated by the 10-year coronary event risk (Framingham risk score). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses were used to evaluate the predictive ability of the obesity indices for CHD risk. Results Of the whole population, 3636 (32.32%) participants had a risk score higher than 10%. Those who suffered medium or high CHD risk were more likely to have higher mean anthropometric indices, except for BMI in males. In the multivariate-adjusted logistic regression, all these anthropometric measurements were statistically associated with CHD risk in males. After adjusting for all the possible confounders, these anthropometric measurements, except for ABSI, remained as independent indicators of CHD risk in females. According to the ROC analyses, ABSI provided the largest area under the curve (AUC) value in males, and BMI showed the lowest AUC value, with AUC varying from 0.52 to 0.60. WHtR and BRI provided the largest AUC value in female, and similarly, BMI showed the lowest AUC value, with AUC varying from 0.59 to 0.70. The optimal cut-off values were as follows: WHtR (females: 0.54), BRI (females: 4.21), and ABSI (males: 0.078). Conclusions ABSI was the best anthropometric index for estimating CHD risk in males, and WHtR and BRI were the best indicators in females. Males should maintain an ABSI of less than 0.078, and females should maintain a WHtR of less than 0.54 or a BRI of less than 4.21.

Abstract Background Little is known about the relationship between homocysteine (Hcy) levels and the QT interval. We examined the association of different Hcy levels with corrected QT (QTc) intervals in a general population. Methods Plasma levels of Hcy were assessed in a population-based study of 7002 participants 35 years of age and older from 2012 to 2013. Twelve-lead ECGs were performed on all participants and analyzed automatically. Results The distribution of Hcy levels was determined for an entire population after the data were grouped into quartiles (Q1: 18.2 umol/L). The mean value of the QTc interval in each quartile was 433.2 ± 23.8 ms, 430.0 ± 24.6 ms, 429.2 ± 24.5 ms and 430.6 ± 25.7 ms. Objectives This current study was performed to characterise the independent associations of obesity and hypertension with interatrial block (IAB) after adjusting for cardiovascular risk factors, echocardiographic left atrial diameter (LAD) and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) in a large general Chinese population.Design A cross-sectional study.Setting and participants A total of 11 956 permanent residents (≥35 years of age) from Liaoning Province in China were included in this study. Following the completion of a questionnaire, the enrolled participants were subjected to physical examinations, laboratory analyses, ECG and echocardiogram. Linear and logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the associations of hypertension and obesity with IAB.Outcome measures IAB was defined as a prolongation of the P wave duration ≥120 ms on a digital 12-lead ECG.Results The prevalence of IAB in hypertensive individuals was higher than the normotensive in both men (9.5 vs 5.9%; p
