9. 64-GHz Operation of the Pseudorandom Binary Sequence Generator Using the Dual RSFQ/ERSFQ Standard Cell Library

Abstract

A pseudorandom binary sequence of 7-bit word length (PRBS-7) generator has been designed as a low complexity circuit to validate the dual RSFQ/ERSFQ standard cell library, the circuit simulation methodology using process corners and Monte-Carlo statistical variations, as well as the digital design methodology using Verilog simulations with load-dependent timing back-annotation. The PRBS-7 design was optimized across multiple process corners with Monte-Carlo circuit simulations by incorporating statistical variations of the process parameters. To validate the digital design flow, the PRBS-7 was simulated using the Verilog behavioral descriptions of library cells. Using Liberty files for different global bias current (XI) process corners, the margins obtained from digital simulation were compared with circuit simulations. A 5 mm × 5 mm chip, incorporating both the RSFQ and ERSFQ variant of the PRBS-7, was fabricated in the MIT-LL 100 μA/μm2 SFQ5ee fab node. The RSFQ variant of the PRBS-7 has been successfully tested up to 64.77-GHz clock frequency, and the ERSFQ variant up to 45.72-GHz clock frequency. In addition, we have analyzed the model-to-hardware correlation for RSFQ PRBS-7 for different clock frequencies. The simulations account for two process parameters, critical current density (Jc), and sheet resistance (Rs).

Abstract

The development of a 16-bit serial analog-to-digital converter (ADC) aimed at reducing the number of outputs originating from the chip is presented. The device is intended for producing a high-resolution ADC that is expected to have wide applications in areas such as readout electronics for infrared detectors. Extracting the serial ADC output with an optical fiber coupled to a laser diode results in a further reduction of the heat load and a stronger signal transmission.

Abstract

The design of a single-photon-counting hotspot detector with integrated RSFQ readout electronics is presented. The proposed superconducting detector has the capabilities of both hot-electron bolometer and the transition-edge microcalorimeter. In addition, it is an infrared detector with speed, sensitivity and spectral selectivity. The design of this superconducting detector is based on the concept of a localized submicron nonequilibrium 'hotspot' fabricated in an ultrathin film through the absorption of a photon.

The flux dynamics in a contactless, optically-heated switch that employ a Yba2Cu3O(7-x) thin film were investigated via flux motion simulations and measurements. The thin film was sandwiched between the two windings of a transformer to prevent flux coupling when in the superconducting state and to allow inductive coupling to occur across the two coils in the normal state after being triggered by a laser pulse.

Abstract

Arrays of cryogenic microbolometers and other cryogenic detectors are being developed for infrared imaging. If the signal from each sensor is amplified, multiplexed, and digitized using superconducting electronics, then this data can be efficiently read out to ambient temperature with a minimum of noise and thermal load. HYPRES is developing an integrated system based on SQUID amplifiers, a high-resolution analog-to-digital converter (ADC) based on RSFQ (rapid single flux quantum) logic, and a clocked RSFQ multiplexer. The ADC and SQUIDs have already been demonstrated for other projects, so this paper will focus on new results of a digital multiplexer. Several test circuits have been fabricated using Nb Josephson technology and are about to be tested at T = 4.2 K, with a more complete prototype in preparation.
