13. Ab-initio transport theory for the intrinsic spin Hall effect applied to 5$d$ metals

Abstract

We describe how the spin Hall effect (SHE) can be studied from ab-initio by combining density functional theory with the non-equilibrium Green's functions technique for quantum transport into the so-called DFT+NEGF method. After laying down our theoretical approach in particular discussing how to compute charge and spin bond currents, DFT+NEGF calculations are carried out for ideal clean systems. In these the transport is ballistic and the linear response limit is met. The SHE emerges in a central region attached to two leads when we apply a bias voltage so that electrons are accelerated by a uniform electric field. As a result, we obtain a finite spin-Hall current and, by performing a scaling analysis with respect to the system size, we estimate the ballistic spin Hall conductivity (SHC). We consider 5d metals with fcc and bcc crystal structures, finding that the SHC exhibits a rough qualitative dependence on the d-band filling, and comment on these results in relation to existing literature. Finally, within the same DFT+NEGF approach, we also predict the appearance of a current-induced spin dipole moment inside the materials' unit cell and estimate its magnitude., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

14. Current-induced spin polarization in chiral Tellurium: a first-principles quantum transport study

Abstract

Te is a naturally p-doped semiconductor with a chiral structure, where an electrical current causes the conduction electrons to become spin polarized parallel to the transport direction. In this paper, we present a comprehensive theoretical study of this effect by employing density functional theory (DFT) combined with the non-equilibrium Green's functions (NEGF) technique for quantum transport. We suggest that the spin polarization can quantitatively be estimated in terms of two complementary quantities, namely the non-equilibrium magnetic moments and the spin current density. The calculated magnetic moments are directly compared with the values from previous theoretical studies obtaining overall consistent results. On the other hand, the inspection of the spin current density provides insights of the magnetotransport properties of the material. Specifically, we predict that the resistance along a Te wire changes when an external magnetic field is applied parallel or antiparallel to the charge current direction. The computed magnetoresistance is however quite small (~ 0.025%). Finally, we show that the description of the current-induced spin polarization in terms of the spin current establishes a straightforward connection with the phenomenon called chiral-induced spin selectivity, recently observed in several nano-junctions.

Abstract

Telehealth services, specifically telemedicine audio-video and audio-only patient encounters, expanded dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic through temporary waivers and flexibilities tied to the public health emergency. Early studies demonstrate significant potential to advance the quintuple aim (patient experience, health outcomes, cost, clinician well-being, and equity). Supported well, telemedicine can particularly improve patient satisfaction, health outcomes, and equity. Implemented poorly, telemedicine can facilitate unsafe care, worsen disparities, and waste resources. Without further action from lawmakers and agencies, payment will end for many telemedicine services currently used by millions of Americans at the end of 2024. Policymakers, health systems, clinicians, and educators must decide how to support, implement, and sustain telemedicine, and long-term studies and clinical practice guidelines are emerging to provide direction. In this position statement, we use clinical vignettes to review relevant literature and highlight where key actions are needed. These include areas where telemedicine must be expanded (e.g., to support chronic disease management) and where guidelines are needed (e.g., to prevent inequitable offering of telemedicine services and prevent unsafe or low-value care). We provide policy, clinical practice, and education recommendations for telemedicine on behalf of the Society of General Internal Medicine. Policy recommendations include ending geographic and site restrictions, expanding the definition of telemedicine to include audio-only services, establishing appropriate telemedicine service codes, and expanding broadband access to all Americans. Clinical practice recommendations include ensuring appropriate telemedicine use (for limited acute care situations or in conjunction with in-person services to extend longitudinal care relationships), that the choice of modality be done through patient-clinician shared decision-making, and that health systems design telemedicine services through community partnerships to ensure equitable implementation. Education recommendations include developing telemedicine-specific educational strategies for trainees that align with accreditation body competencies and providing educators with protected time and faculty development resources.

Abstract

Parallel ("nested") regions of a Fermi surface (FS) drive instabilities of the electron fluid, for example the spin density wave in elemental chromium. In one-dimensional materials, the FS is trivially fully nested (a single nesting vector connects two "Fermi dots"), while in higher dimensions only a fraction of the FS consists of parallel sheets. We demonstrate that the tiny angle regime of twist bilayer graphene (TBLG) possess a phase, accessible by interlayer bias, in which the FS consists entirely of nestable "Fermi lines": the first example of a completely nested FS in a 2d material. This nested phase is found both in the ideal as well as relaxed structure of the twist bilayer. We demonstrate excellent agreement with recent STM images of topological states in this material and elucidate the connection between these and the underlying Fermiology. We show that the geometry of the "Fermi lines" network is controllable by the strength of the applied interlayer bias, and thus that TBLG offers unprecedented access to the physics of FS nesting in 2d materials.

Abstract

Introduction: Diffuse parenchymal lung disease (DPLD) describes a heterogenous group of disorders of the lower respiratory tract characterized by inflammation and derangement of the interstitium and loss of functional alveolar units. The disease is not restricted to the interstitium, it involves the entire pulmonary parenchyma. The present study was undertaken to detect and study the profile of computed tomographic (CT) patterns of diffuse parenchymal lung diseases. Methodology: The present study comprised of 60 patients of DPLD. Patients were evaluated by CT scan in Department of Radio -diagnosis from October 2014 to October 2016. Pregnant women and diagnosed cases of tuberculosis (sputum positive) were excluded. Results: The most commonly identified diffuse parenchymal lung disease was idiopathic interstitial pneumonia (26.7%) followed by tuberculosis and post tubercular disease (16.7%) of the total cases. Conclusion: Diffuse parenchymal lung diseases commonly occur in the middle age, the presenting complaint being unremitting dyspnea of long duration in most of the cases. Idiopathic interstitial pneumonia forms the major group of diffuse parenchymal lung diseases in our society. The extent and distribution of disease identified on HRCT scans correlates well with the clinical impairment.
