18. The new frontier: utilizing ChatGPT to expand craniofacial research.

Abstract

Background: Due to the importance of evidence-based research in plastic surgery, the authors of this study aimed to assess the accuracy of ChatGPT in generating novel systematic review ideas within the field of craniofacial surgery. Methods: ChatGPT was prompted to generate 20 novel systematic review ideas for 10 different subcategories within the field of craniofacial surgery. For each topic, the chatbot was told to give 10 "general" and 10 "specific" ideas that were related to the concept. In order to determine the accuracy of ChatGPT, a literature review was conducted using PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and Cochrane. Results: In total, 200 total systematic review research ideas were generated by ChatGPT. We found that the algorithm had an overall 57.5% accuracy at identifying novel systematic review ideas. ChatGPT was found to be 39% accurate for general topics and 76% accurate for specific topics. Conclusion: Craniofacial surgeons should use ChatGPT as a tool. We found that ChatGPT provided more precise answers with specific research questions than with general questions and helped narrow down the search scope, leading to a more relevant and accurate response. Beyond research purposes, ChatGPT can augment patient consultations, improve healthcare equity, and assist in clinical decisionmaking. With rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), it is important for plastic surgeons to consider using AI in their clinical practice to improve patient-centered outcomes. Abstract

BACKGROUND: This study examines the biophysical and preclinical pulmonary activity of synthetic lung surfactants containing novel phospholipase-resistant phosphonolipids or synthetic glycerophospholipids combined with Super Mini-B (S-MB) DATK and/or SP-Css ion-lock 1 peptides that replicate the functional biophysics of surfactant proteins (SP)-B and SP-C. Phospholipase-resistant phosphonolipids used in synthetic surfactants are DEPN-8 and PG-1, molecular analogs of dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and palmitoyl-oleoyl phosphatidylglycerol (POPG), while glycerophospholipids used are active lipid components of native surfactant (DPPC:POPC:POPG 5:3:2 by weight). The objective of the work is to test whether these novel lipid/peptide synthetic surfactants have favorable preclinical activity (biophysical, pulmonary) for therapeutic use in reversing surfactant deficiency or dysfunction in lung disease or injury. METHODS: Surface activity of synthetic lipid/peptide surfactants was assessed in vitro at 37 °C by measuring adsorption in a stirred subphase apparatus and dynamic surface tension lowering in pulsating and captive bubble surfactometers. Shear viscosity was measured as a function of shear rate on a Wells-Brookfield micro-viscometer. 26. Retinal Ganglion Cell Functional Recovery after Intraocular Pressure Lowering Treatment Using Prostaglandin Analogs in Glaucoma Suspects: A Prospective Pilot Study.

Abstract

Aim and background: To evaluate the ability of pattern electroretinogram (PERG) to detect improvement of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) function in glaucoma suspects (GS) after medically reducing intraocular pressure (IOP) using prostaglandin analog drops. Materials and methods: Six subjects (eight eyes) received topical IOP lowering treatment based on their clinical examination and were observed at Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital over an average of 3.1 ± 2.2 months. During this time, participants underwent a full ophthalmologic exam and were evaluated with a Humphrey visual field analyzer (HFA) 24-2 [24-2 mean deviation (MD), 24-2 pattern standard deviation (PSD), and 24-2 visual field indices (VFI)], Diopsys NOVA PERG optimized for glaucoma [magnitude (Mag), magnitudeD (MagD), and magnitudeD/magnitude ratio (MagD/Mag ratio)] and optical coherence tomography (OCT)-derived average retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (avRNFLT) and average ganglion cell layer + inner plexiform layer (avGCL + IPL) thicknesses at baseline visit (pretreatment) and 3 months later (posttreatment). Goldman applanation tonometry was used to measure IOP at each visit. Paired sample t-tests were conducted to determine the statistical significance of the change in IOP, HFA indices, PERG parameters, and OCT thickness measurements between the two visits. Results: Lowering IOP by 22.29% resulted in a significant increase (32.98 and 15.49%) in MagD [t (7) = -3.174, 95% confidence interval (CI) = -0.53, -0.08, p = 0.016] and MagD/Mag ratio [t (7) = -3.233, 95% CI = -0.20, -0.03, p = 0.014], respectively. There was a positive percentage change for all variables of interest, however, 24-2 MD, Mag, avRNFLT, and GCL+ IPLT did not reach statistical significance. Conclusion: After reducing IOP by 22.29% for a duration of 3.1 months, the PERG parameters, MagD and MagD/Mag ratio, significantly improved by 32.98 and 15.49%, respectively. Clinical significance: Pattern electroretinogram (PERG) may be a crucial tool for clinicians to locate a window of opportunity in which degenerating yet viable RGCs could be rescued from irreversible damage. We suggest consideration of PERG as a tool in early retinal ganglion cell (RGC) dysfunction detection as well as for monitoring IOP lowering treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

34. Rare Case of a Cutaneous Fingertip Schwannoma: A Case Report and Review of Literature

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Soft tissue masses of the hand are common and mostly benign, including ganglion cysts, glomus tumors, lipomas, and giant cell tumors of the tendon sheath. Schwannomas are benign nerve sheath tumors but are rarely found on the distal parts of the digits. The authors present a case of a schwannoma located at the tip of the finger. METHODS: An otherwise healthy 26-year-old man presented because of a 10-year history of a slowly growing mass on the tip of his right little finger that significantly interfered with his right hand function. The patient underwent hand radiographs and surgical excision of the tumor. RESULTS: Pathologic evaluation determined that the mass was a schwannoma with positive immunohistochemistry for S-100 and SOX-10. The patient reported complete resolution of symptoms associated with the tumor and his satisfaction with the surgical outcome. CONCLUSIONS: Imaging studies, such as radiographs, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging, are critical in the diagnostic workup of soft tissue masses of the hand to better understand involvement of the tumor to musculature, vasculature, and other pertinent bony structures. Although quite common, schwannomas may be hard to differentiate from other soft tissue tumors, and a review of the literature demonstrates the importance of providers utilizing imaging and other diagnostics before proceeding to treatment.
