Objective: This university-based retrospective study aimed to assess the performance of the implant disease risk assessment (IDRA) in predicting peri-implantitis., Material and Methods: Patients with implants loaded for at least 1 year were included. Peri-implantitis development was the outcome, while the IDRA score and its eight vectors were the predictors. The IDRA score was calculated using an online tool. Data were analyzed using Cox proportional hazards models and ROC curve (AUC)., Results: Among 480 implants in 235 patients, 7.9% of implants and 9.4% of patients developed peri-implantitis. Implants at high risk for the "number of sites with PD ≥ 5 mm" vector had an increased risk (HR = 9.8, p = 0.004) of peri-implantitis, compared to those at low risk for this parameter. Implants at moderate (HR = 4.8, p = 0.04) and high (HR = 10.0, p = 0.01) risk for the "distance from the restorative margin (RM) to bone crest (BC)" vector exhibited a higher risk of peri-implantitis than implants at low risk for this parameter. The IDRA tool demonstrated an AUC of 0.66 (sensitivity = 0.80; specificity = 0.24) when estimated at implant level and an AUC of 0.61 (sensitivity = 0.91; specificity = 0.32) when calculated at patient level. The mixed-effects Cox model did not reveal a significant association between the overall IDRA score and the development of peri-implantitis (HR = 7.2, p = 0.18)., Conclusion: IDRA demonstrates good sensitivity but low specificity and suboptimal discriminatory capacity in predicting peri-implantitis. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a xenogeneic collagen matrix (XCM) in treating gingival recessions (GR) in a thin gingival phenotype. This double-blind, planned, controlled, split-mouth clinical trial included 30 patients with bilateral recessions, randomly assigned to a test group (extended flap + XCM) and a control group (extended flap + connective tissue graft; CTG). Root coverage at 18 months was 1.75 ± 0.8 mm (72.9%) and 2.4 ± 0.51 mm (88.9%) in the test and the control groups, respectively. The upper limit of the confidence interval was not greater than the non-inferiority margin of 0.69 mm. The increase in gingival thickness was greater for autogenous graft (p = 0.003). Both treatments improved quality of life at 18 months. The keratinized tissue width (KTW) increased significantly in the grafted teeth, in both the test (p < 0.001) and the control groups (p < 0.001). Total root coverage was similar in both groups, reaching 70% and 66.7% in the control and test groups, respectively, with no significant differences observed for partial or complete root coverage (CRC). An association was observed in the quality of the gingival phenotype at 18 months according to the treatment group, i.e., a higher percentage of cases with a thicker phenotype was observed in the control group (86.7%), compared with the test group (53.3%) (p = 0.005). XCM was effective in treating GR, but CTG had better results because of significantly increased gingival thickness and phenotypic conversion.

Objective: To evaluate whether a two-piece abutment is equivalent to a one-piece in peri-implant esthetics, patients' satisfaction, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQOL) for implant-supported anterior single crown placement., Material and Methods: Thirty implants were allocated sequentially: 15 in the one-piece abutment group (OP) and 15 in the two-piece abutment group (TP). Peri-implant esthetics were evaluated by the pink esthetic score (PES) at temporary crown insertion (T1), after tissue conditioning (T2), and at 30 days after the final crown insertion (T3). OHRQOL was measured using the OHIP-14 and satisfaction was evaluated using the visual analog scale (VAS) at baseline, T1, and T3. Treatment was considered equivalent if the 95% coefficient interval (CI) for mean difference in PES was between -1.5 and +1.5 points. Statistical analysis was performed using Mann-Whitney, SPANOVA, and Student's t-test, with Sidak's posttest, adopting p < 0.05., Results: No differences were found between the groups for any variable and during follow-up. A significant increase in OHRQOL and satisfaction was observed at T3, when compared to baseline (p < 0.05) for both groups. Significant improvements in peri-implant esthetics were also observed throughout the treatment, particularly after tissue conditioning (p < 0.05). Primary and secondary outcomes were evaluated for equivalence, and both abutment types were considered equivalent following the insertion of the temporary crowns., Conclusions: Two-piece abutment was equivalent to one-piece abutment for peri-implant esthetics, quality of life, or the satisfaction of patients rehabilitated with metal-free single crowns. Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of preloading crestal bone loss (PLCBL) and to identify the patient-related and implant-related factors associated with PLCBL., Methods: This retrospective cohort examined the dental records of patients who received at least one dental implant. PLCBL was defined as a reduction ⩾0.5 mm and severe PLCBL (primary variable) as a reduction ⩾1.5 mm in mesial and/or distal bone level, measured from the day of implant placement to uncovering or abutment installation/crown delivery. The incidence of PLCBL and patient and implant variables were recorded. Bivariate analysis and binary logistic regression identified factors associated with PLCBL ⩾0.5 mm and ⩾1.5 mm., Results: A total of 746 dental implants placed in 361 patients from January 2011 to July 2021 was included in the analyses. Of the implants assessed, 24.4% (n = 182) exhibited PLCBL ⩾ 0.5 mm and 10.5% (n = 78) presented severe PLCBL (i.e., ⩾1.5 mm). Males (odds ratio [OR] = 1.85, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.11-3.07), patients with diabetes (OR = 3.33, 95% CI = 1.73-6.42), and those allergic to penicillin (OR = 3.13, 95% CI = 1.57-6.22) were more likely to experience severe PLCBL (p < 0.05). Implants placed in the anterior area (OR = 2.08, 95% CI = 1.16-3.73), with bone-level platform-abutment connection (OR = 4.73, 95% CI = 1.94-11.49) and inserted supracrestally (OR = 3.77, 95% CI = 1.84-7.72), presented a greater risk of developing severe PLCBL (p < 0.05). Implants placed in a previously grafted area presented a lower likelihood of developing severe PLCBL (OR = 0.489, 95% CI = 0.28-0.84)., Conclusion: The incidence of PLCBL ⩾ 0.5 mm and ⩾1.5 mm was 24.4% and 10.5%, respectively. Male sex, diabetes, allergy to penicillin, anterior location, bone-level platform-abutment connection, and supracrestal implant placement are potential risk factors for severe PLCBL. Objective: To compare the clinical periodontal parameters of teeth restored with a single ceramic crown, with and without crown lengthening procedure., Methods: This prospective, longitudinal, controlled, and single-blinded clinical trial involved 22 patients with a total of forty-one teeth with ceramic crowns. The teeth were divided into two groups: test (n = 21), comprising teeth rehabilitated post crown-lengthening surgery, and control (n = 20), comprising teeth rehabilitated without crown-lengthening surgery. Plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BoP), and clinical attachment level (CAL) were compared between groups (surgically treated and non-surgically treated) and within each group for each type of site (treated -tt; adjacent - ad; and nonadjacent - nad). Additionally, gingival phenotype (GP), gingival recession (GR), and keratinized tissue width (KTW) were also assessed post- restoration. Statistical analyses used a significance level set at 5 %., Results: PI, GI, and BoP were reduced, but no statistically significant differences were observed within each group or between groups for most follow-up periods. CAL of the TT sites was consistently higher in the test group, and PD was also higher in the test group (p < 0.05), except at T3. adPD, nadPD, adCAL, and nadCAL demonstrated no significant differences between groups and periods. A significant association was identified between GP and the occurrence of GR, with the thick-flat phenotype demonstrating less association with GR, regardless of whether crown lengthening was performed or not., Conclusion: Crown-lengthening surgery in rehabilitated teeth does not significantly affect PI and GI after 12 months. Although crown-lengthening surgery affected PD and CAL in TT sites, it did not affect adjacent and non-adjacent sites., Clinical Relevance: These findings emphasize the importance of considering individual patient factors and the potential impact on periodontal tissues when planning crown-lengthening surgery. The biological mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes (T2DM)-related periodontitis remain unclear. This cross-sectional study evaluated the distinctive transcriptomic changes between tissues with periodontal health and with periodontitis in patients with T2DM. In this cross-sectional study, whole transcriptome sequencing was performed on gingival biopsies from non-periodontitis and periodontitis tissues from non-diabetic and diabetic patients. A differentially expressed gene (DEG) analysis and Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) assessed the genes and signaling pathways associated with T2DM-related periodontitis. Immunohistochemistry was performed to validate selected DEGs possibly involved in T2DM-related periodontitis. Four hundred and twenty and one thousand five hundred and sixty-three DEGs (fold change ≥ 2) were uniquely identified in the diseased tissues of non-diabetic and diabetic patients, respectively. The IPA predicted the activation of Phagosome Formation, Cardiac β-adrenergic, tRNA Splicing, and PI3K/AKT pathways. The IPA also predicted the inhibition of Cholesterol Biosynthesis, Adrenomedullin, and Inositol Phosphate Compounds pathways in T2DM-related periodontitis. Validation of DEGs confirmed changes in protein expression of PTPN2, PTPN13, DHCR24, PIK3R2, CALCRL, IL1RN, IL-6R and ITGA4 in diseased tissues in diabetic subjects. When periodontal disease is diagnosed, it is difficult to predict the clinical response of treatment of a tooth over time because the result of treatment is affected by several factors and will depend on the maintenance and support of periodontal treatment. Rehabilitation with removable dental prostheses, fixed prostheses, and dental implants makes it possible to restore the function and esthetics of patients with tooth loss due to periodontal disease. The predictive factors of tooth loss in periodontitis patients should be assessed by dentists to inform their clinical decision-making during dental treatment planning. This will provide detailed individualized information and level of risk of patients considered suitable for dental rehabilitation. Therefore, the aim of this article was to review the subject of "Impact of tooth loss due to periodontal disease on the prognosis of rehabilitation" and the effect of fixed, removable, and implant-supported prostheses in periodontal patients.

To analyze the hemostatic, Dsurgical wounds in donor and recipient areas of free gingival grafts (FGG). Five databases (PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, Cochrane and Web of Science) were searched up to March 2021 (PROSPERO CRD42019134497). The focus of the study (cyanoacrylate) was combined with the condition (periodontal surgery OR free gingival graft OR free soft tissue graft OR autografts), and outcome (healing OR epithelialization OR pain OR analgesia OR bleeding OR hemostasis OR hemostatic). Studies reporting cyanoacrylate isolated or associated with another substance in FGG stabilization and closure were investigated and assessed for the quality and risk of bias through the Cochrane Manual. Six studies with 323 participants were included. Evaluation of the quality and risk of bias highlighted a low risk for four articles, intermediate for one and unclear for another. The use of cyanoacrylate associated or not with the hemostatic sponge or the platelet-rich fibrin was more effective in healing (three studies), analgesia (four studies), and hemostasis in one study (p < 0.05). However, groups with the association in cyanoacrylate showed superior healing, and analgesic action to the isolated cyanoacrylate group. In addition, two studies demonstrated that cyanoacrylate use reduces surgery duration, one study showed that it reduces postoperative sensibility, and another present hemostatic effect (p < 0.05). There is scarce literature for the use of cyanoacrylate in FGG wounds indicates that it can promote a minor inflammatory response, reduce operation time, does not interfere with healing, relieves postoperative discomfort, and suggests the possibility immediate hemostasis. Its use presents an alternative to suturing in FGG surgeries. But, the limited number of cases and the relative heterogeneity of the included studies suggest caution in generalizing the indication., Clinical Relevance: Cyanoacrylate seems to present analgesic effects and less pain when applied to wound closure and covering donor and recipient areas reducing the need for postoperative analgesic medication; and has a healing effect in the closure of the donor area on the palate. In addition, it can reduce bleeding time after surgery, and prevents late bleeding during the first postsurgical week. Scientific justification: To evaluate the hemostatic, analgesic and healing actions of cyanoacrylate compared to the suture thread and other agents when used to close surgical wounds from periodontal free gingival graft surgical wounds in both the donor and recipient areas of the graft., Main Findings: The use of cyanoacrylate individually or in association with wound dressing agents presents analgesic effects because the patient reports less pain experienced when cyanoacrylate is applied to the wound closure and covering, thereby reducing the need for postoperative analgesic medication. In addition, a healing effect is observed in the closure of the donor area on the palate; as well as it seems to present hemostatic effects, reducing the bleeding time after surgery, and preventing late bleeding during the first postsurgical week., Practical Implications: Dentists may cautiously apply cyanoacrylate after periodontal surgeries for free gingival graft in both the donor and recipient areas of the graft. However, they must consider the limitations of the surgery, tension-free positioning, the patient's dyscrasia and postoperative care, constituting a set of predictors for adequate clinical decision-making. The generalist training planned by Brazilian National Curriculum Guidelines for Dentistry undergraduate courses should provide actions for the development of health promotion in the field of public health, as well as disease prevention, diagnosis, planning, and dental treatment in the clinical field. Considering this complexity, the aim of the present study was to validate dimensions and sub-dimensions in dentistry training, allowing the identification of the main necessary competences and clinical skills for the generalist practice. For this, an evaluation study was carried out through the Delph's Method with the participation of 19 professors of Dentistry courses in Brazil working in the clinical area, considered "experts" in this theme. It was possible to identify clinical competences and skills in four dimensions and respective sub-dimensions: Transversal skills (biosafety, patient-team communication, humanization, ethical principles, dental documentation); Diagnosis and planning (diagnosis of dental caries, pulp and periapical changes, and periodontal diseases, clinical and imaging exam, and single treatment planning); Preventive activities (oral hygiene guidance and oral cancer prevention); and Dental care (anesthesia, basic oral surgery, drug prescription, subgingival scaling and root planing, dental restoration, minimally and non-invasive restoration treatment, and dental urgencies). The developed model represents a differentiated alternative for the construction of an innovative curriculum in Dentistry, aimed at the training of general practitioners to provide humanized, highly effective, and resolving care. The importance of clinical tutoring by professors on the essential clinical skills and abilities is highlighted in this study.

Purpose/objectives: To investigate dental students' perceptions and concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, their coping strategies and support resources, and their perceived stress levels., Methods: A customized 19-item survey and the perceived stress scale (PSS) were applied to undergraduate dental students from the US, Spain, Ireland, Chile, India, and Brazil between April 10 and July 5, 2020. Linear modeling and mediation analysis were used to explore the relationships among demographics, stressors, coping mechanisms, social support, and stress RESULTS: A total of 4475 students responded to the survey. The majority (72.4%) were women, and 52.3% had no COVID-19 training at the time of the survey. The students reported that they had to accommodate to changes in patient care (96.6%) and didactic learning (95.2%) activities, while 88.5% of the respondents indicated at least one of their courses moved online. Transition to online courses went "smoothly with some troubles" for 51.8% of the respondents, and 48.3% perceived the faculty as prepared for the online transition; however, 45.9% reported feeling extremely concerned about the impact of COVID-19 on their education. The average PSS score was 21.9 of 40 (moderate stress). Multivariate models were built for participants with full data (n = 3899). Being male, having completed more dental coursework, and perceiving a smoother transition were associated with lower PSS scores; more concern about academic progress was associated with higher PSS. Faculty support mediated the relationship between a smoothness of transition and concern about academic progress and PSS scores CONCLUSION: Stress caused by the pandemic may be alleviated by smoother transition and good faculty support., (© 2021 American Dental Education Association.)

The rapid and abrupt transmission pattern of the SARS-CoV-2 unleashed the current COVID-19 pandemic, as recognized by the World Health Organization in March 2020. Considering the high risk of transmission of the virus in dental environments and the specificities in clinical practice, COVID-19 posed immediate challenges for dental care and education. Due to the need to establish infection prevention and control guidance in dental health settings to enable a safe clinical practice, this review aims to list the challenges and perspectives in managing dental care in services and schools. This review employed materials collected from PubMed and the main guidelines and studies on the novel coronavirus to provide an overview of the clinical procedures and decisions made by health care personnel in dental offices and dental schools. We expect the COVID-19 scenario to promote significant changes in clinical practice and dental education; dentists should seek specific and particular regulations for dental practice established by their state or country. Biosafety checklists are strongly recommended for appointments at dental services and face-to-face activities in dental schools.

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of probiotics on peri-implant diseases., Materials and Methods: PubMed-MEDLINE, Scopus, Literature in the Health Sciences in Latin America and the Caribbean (LILACS) and Science Direct were searched until September 2019. Three authors independently carried out this search, using the following search algorithm to explore databases using Boolean operators ("peri-implant diseases" OR "dental implants") AND ("probiotics" OR "lactobacillus"). Randomized clinical trials were included. No limits were applied to the year and articles were restricted to those in the English, Spanish and Portuguese languages. Review articles, reports of clinical cases and works without mention of the topic were excluded., Results: Five randomized clinical trials were analyzed in the final review process. For the primary outcomes - Periodontal probing depth (PPD) and bleeding on probing (BOP); and for the secondary outcames - plaque index, gingival index, gingival crevicular fluid and microbiological tests - no significant clinical effects of probiotics were observed., Conclusion: Probiotics could be used during the treatment of peri-implant diseases. However, the most appropriate form of probiotic administration or the effectiveness of this approach are still unclear. Objectives: To evaluate periodontal parameters of abutment teeth and interproximal sites, in patients with mandibular class I Kennedy Removable Partial Dentures (RPD), after 4 years of periodontal treatment., Methods: Fourteen patients with periodontal disease were treated and evaluated for the following parameters: plaque index (PI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD), gingival recession (GR), clinical attachment loss (CAL) and keratinized mucosa (KM). Parameters were compared between abutment teeth with direct and indirect retainers at all time-points. Periodontal maintenance was recorded at 6, 18 and 48 months. Data were analyzed using the Friedman and Wilcoxon Tests., Results: Most patients (n=11; 78.6%) included were female and had a mean age of 66 years (± 7.8). After 48 months, a significant reduction was only observed in PI for both abutment teeth; in contrast, PD, GR, CAL and KM all increased by the end of the study. BOP increased at 48 months for the abutment teeth with direct retainers. The distal site of the abutment teeth with direct retainers presented higher values for GR and CAL., Conclusions: Non-surgical periodontal therapy was effective during the first 18 months, but periodontal conditions were worse at 48 months after therapy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of photodynamic therapy as complementary therapy to mechanical instrumentation on periodontal residual pockets. This longitudinal, prospective, double-blind and controlled split-mouth clinical trial included one hundred and fourteen residual periodontal sites with probing depth ≥ 4 mm and bleeding on probing, which were distributed into two groups: 57 in the test group (SRP + aPDT) - using a low power laser application Therapy XT (DMC Equipamentos Ltda, São Carlos, São Paulo, Brazil) with operational parameters of 660 nm and 110 mW for 15s, and 57 in the control group (SRP). Oral hygiene conditions were evaluated, through the Visible Plaque Index (VPI) and Gingival Bleeding Index (GBI), as well as periodontal clinical outcomes, comprising the Bleeding on Probing (BOP), Probing Depth (PD) and Clinical Attachment Level (CAL) at baseline and after 3 months. Decrease of 17.74% was observed for the VPI after 3 months of follow-up, while the GBI was reduced by 19.91%, thus indicating statistically significant decreases for both parameters (p < 0.001). Decreases in VPI per site, BOP and PD and CAL gain between T 0 and T 3 in both treatment groups (p < 0.001) were observed, but no statistically significant intergroup differences were found (p > 0.05). Objective: To evaluate gingival phenotypes in 100 subjects (n = 100), with regard to maxillary central incisors and surrounding periodontium in an observational diagnostic study., Materials and Methods: Individuals were grouped based on: Probing depth (PD); keratinized mucosa (KM); Ratio Height/Width Crown (CH/CW), papilla area (PA), gingival thickness (GT) and Gingival Volume (GV). ANOVA and chi-square tests were performed with a significance level of 5%. Results: PD (p=0.860) and CH/CW (p=0.086) were not statistically significant. Cluster analysis identified three groups: Cluster I (n = 32) had the lowest values: KM (4.54mm), GT (0.83mm), PA (15.64mm²) and GV (3.80mm³); Cluster II (n = 43) presented KM (8.02mm); GT (1.40mm); GV (11.18mm³) and PA (14.10mm²); Cluster III (n = 19) exhibited an average KM of 5.57mm, GT (1.14mm), PA (20.08mm²) and GV (6.48mm³)., Results: Cluster I was characterized as a thin phenotype; cluster II as thick, and cluster III, as an intermediate. Significant associations were found when transparency on probing was compared among clusters (p less than 0.05) and gingival exposure when smiling (p less than 0.05)., Conclusion: Thin phenotype was found in 34.04% of the sample (cluster I), thick phenotype in 45.75% (cluster II) and intermediate phenotype in 20.21% (Cluster III).., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest., (Copyright© by the International Academy of Periodontology.)

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of basic periodontal treatment on clinical periodontal parameters associated with abutment teeth of patients with mandibular Kennedy class I removable partial dentures (RPD) 18 months after treatment., Materials and Methods: Thirty patients with periodontal disease were treated and evaluated according to the following periodontal parameters: visible plaque index (VPI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD), gingival recession (GR), clinical attachment loss (CAL), and keratinized mucosa (KM). These parameters were compared between abutment teeth with direct and indirect retainers at baseline, and after 6 and 18 months. Data were analyzed by Friedman Test and Wilcoxon Test for all variables., Results: Most patients (n = 26; 86.7%) included in the study were female and had a mean age of 61 years (±7.54). Results showed that VPI and BOP decreased over time, and that VPI values were higher in abutment teeth with direct retainers (p = 0.001). There was a reduction in PD after 6 months, which was maintained up to 18 months. In general, abutment teeth with direct retainers had significantly higher values for PD, GR, and CAL (p = 0.029). Data also indicated that the parameters for VPI, BOP, and PD improved; however, abutment teeth with direct retainers presented smaller improvements, compared with abutment teeth with indirect retainers, which presented significant improvements for almost all variables., Conclusion: Periodontal treatment and oral hygiene care of patients were adequate for maintenance of adequate periodontal conditions, regardless of the use of prostheses., (© 2018 by the American College of Prosthodontists.)

Background: Recurrent aphthous ulcerations are common benign ulcerated lesions on the mouth, whose etiology is poorly understood, with controversial treatment and difficult to control in clinical practice., Objective: To evaluate the cases of recurrent aphthous ulcerations with a focus on treatment, diagnosis and etiology., Methods: This is a retrospective study of the cases of the Oral Diagnosis service of the Rio Grande do Norte Federal University in Natal/RN. Data such as sex, age, race, location, smoking habits, types of treatment, relapsing episodes, laboratory test results and clinical characteristics were collected. The associations between the variables were analyzed using the Pearson Chi-square test (p <0.05)., Results: A total of 4895 patients were seen in the service over a period of 11 years. Of these, 161 (3.3%) had complaints of oral aphthous ulcerations, of which 76 (47.2%) were diagnosed as suffering from recurrent aphthous ulcerations and 68 (42.2%) with clinical information necessary for evaluation. The tongue was the most affected anatomical region, with 27 individuals (39.7%), followed by the buccal mucosa, with 22 cases (32.3%)., Study Limitations: Retrospective study with data from medical records., Conclusion: Dental surgeons, dermatologists and otorhinolaryngologists are the main responsible for the first contact with patients with this disease and should be attentive to the clinical aspects and treat each patient in an individualized way, since the therapy is palliative, its diagnosis is by exclusion and its etiology is unknown.

Purpose: To assess periodontal parameters of noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) restored with glass-ionomer cement (RM-GIC) and composite resin at baseline, three and six months., Materials and Methods: Eighteen patients with bilateral lesions were included in the study. Lesions (1 mm in depth) were randomly restored with each type of restorative material. Probing depth (PD), relative gingival recession (rGR), relative clinical attachment level (rCAL), visible plaque index (VPI) and gingival bleeding index (GBI) were measured., Results: No statistically significant differences were found when comparing within groups (p > 0.05). However, the intergroup analysis demonstrated a decrease in GR and rCAL gain for teeth restored with the resin-modified glass-ionomer cement (RM-GIC)., Conclusion: Both materials behaved similarly when in close contact with periodontal tissues and did not influence periodontal parameters.

Objective: To evaluate the frequency of peri-implant diseases and factors associated with its occurrence., Material and Methods: One hundred and fifty-five patients with dental implants were evaluated in this cross-sectional study. Dental implants were clinically and radiographically evaluated to diagnose their peri-implant condition, according to Mombelli (Proceedings of the 3rd European Workshop on Periodontology, 1999, Quintessence, London). Associations between peri-implant diseases and independent variables (socioeconomic, demographic and periodontal characteristics) were evaluated through bivariate analysis with chi-squared and Fisher's exact tests, as well as by multiple logistic regression. The significance level was set at 5%., Results: The frequencies of the peri-implant diseases, mucositis and peri-implantitis, in individuals were 54% and 28% (CI, 95%), respectively. The sample was almost exclusively of patients with untreated periodontal disease (93%). Bivariate analysis showed that these peri-implant diseases were associated with male patients (prevalence ratio [PR], 3.38), medication use (PR, 2.94), systemic diseases (PR, 2.25), number of implants (PR, 2.53), visible plaque index (PR, 2.49) and gingival index (PR, 2.70). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that medication use (prevalence ratio adjusted [PRadj], 1.23; 95% CI: 1.04-1.46; P = 0.017), having two or more implants (PRadj, 1.22; 95% CI: 1.02-1.46; P = 0.029) and gingival bleeding index > 10% (PRadj, 1.22; 95% CI: 1.03-1.44; P = 0.022) were associated with the presence of peri-implant disease., Conclusion: Peri-implant diseases were diagnosed in 54% of patients; gingival index of greater than 10%, having more than two implants and use of medication were associated with the frequency of peri-implant disease., (© 2016 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Objectives: The objective of this review was to assess the literature for evidence investigating the role of TGF-β in temporomandibular joint disease with osteoarthritis., Method: An electronic and manual search was carried out on the databases, MEDLINE/PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web Of Science, and EMBASE, from 1975 to December 2015 by two independent evaluators to identify clinical and laboratory trials in English., Results: The search produced 693 records. Following a process of selection based on certain criteria, eight articles were included., Discussion: This systematic review suggests that TGF-β administration alone does not result in joint regeneration; other factors may be involved, such as TGF-β receptor expression ,and TGF-β receptor mutations that do not allow a correct transduction, resulting in TGF-β deficiency. The anabolism induced by this growth factor is also able to neutralize the catabolic processes that are elevated in osteoarthritis. Therefore, further studies are essential to determine how the concentration of TGF-β in the temporomandibular joints acts as a potential marker for the development of degenerative conditions.

The effects of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) on bone quantity and quality were investigated for years. However, there is lack of information on the impact of NSAIDs on the quality of tooth-supporting alveolar bone in absence of periodontal inflammation. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate histometrically the influence of a selective COX-2 NSAID (Meloxicam) on the inter-radicular bone mineral density in rats. Forty-nine adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four experimental groups: Subcutaneous injection of 0.9% sterile saline for 15 days (G1; n=12) and 45 days (G2; n=11); and subcutaneous injection of Meloxicam for 15 days (G3; n=13) and 45 days (G4; n=13). Mineral density was histometrically determined in the inter-radicular area of the 1st mandibular molars and data analysis performed by two-way ANOVA (a=5%). Results showed no interaction between time and treatment (p>0.05) and that meloxicam did not affect the alveolar bone density. In contrast, it was found that inter-radicular alveolar bone density increased with time (91.88±3.08% and 92.86±2.38% for groups 15 and 45 days, respectively) (p<0.05). Within the limits of this study, daily administration of a selective COX-2 inhibitor (Meloxicam) did not affect the quality of the inter-radicular alveolar bone in absence of periodontal infection.
