1. Extra-long creep rupture life of Alleima 3R60™ (316/316L) stainless steel

Abstract

Alleima 3R60 (TM) is an AISI 316/316 L type of stainless steel. This alloy shows extra-long creep lives. At 700 degrees C with an applied stress of 45 MPa, the specimen broke first after 240 131 hours, a 140% longer creep life than the predicted. The reasons have been studied using SEM/EDS, EBSD, ECCI and TEM. Two unexpected phenomena have been observed. One is the presence of homogeneously dispersed small Mo2Fe4CrSi(Ni-0.5)f063type of precipitates in the matrix. According to the thermodynamic calculation, this phase should not form in this alloy at 700 degrees C. The other is the fine grains formed in the matrix during the creep-testing at 700 degrees C for such an extra-long time. It is believed that both small precipitates and fine grain size contribute to this extra-long creep life of the steel. With the microstructural study and thermodynamic simulation, the mechanisms to form precipitates and fine grains have been discussed. more...

Abstract

On-line low temperature nuclear orientation (OLNO) experiments have been performed on the odd-A Te isotopes 131Te and 133Te using the technique of nuclear magnetic resonance on oriented nuclei (NMR/ON). The magnetic moments of the isomeric 11/2- states have been measured extending the known data on these states in the Te isotopes up to the neutron shell closure at N = 82. The contribution to the 11/2- magnetic moment in 133Te due to core polarisation is calculated using an RPA shell model as well as corrections to the magnetic dipole operator caused by mesonic exchange currents. The neutron number dependence of the magnetic moments of the 11/2- isomers in heavy Te isotopes is discussed in terms of particle-core coupling model (PCM) calculations. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. more...

28. Formation of fine grained area in martensitic steel during very high cycle fatigue

Abstract

A fine grained area around a subsurface fatigue crack origin can usually be observed on fracture surface of a metallic material after very high cycle fatigue. This paper provides a fundamental study on the mechanisms to form this fine grained area using a martensitic stainless steel and advanced analysis instruments. The results show that the formation of a fine grained zone is a local behaviour. It is only a few micrometres in the transversal direction (cross section) and one micrometre in the longitudinal direction (crack propagation direction). High plastic deformation such as localized dislocation slip bands can be observed in this fine grained area. They interact with grain boundaries and cause the formation of damage by impingement cracking. The results indicate that occurrence of cyclic localized plastic deformation during very high cycle fatigue near the subsurface defect leads to the formation of fine grained area. more...

Abstract

International audience; The morphology, the atomic structure, and the strain of very thin Fe epilayers grown on ZnSe(001) have been studied by combined scanning tunnel microscope (STM) and extended x-ray-absorption fine-structure experiments. It turns out that the crystal structure of the flat and anisotropic islands (up to 5 monolayers) and terraces (higher coverages) observed by STM is close to bulk iron but affected by a weak out-of-plane tetragonal distortion. Strain measurements and magnetic anisotropy constants of very thin films obtained by ferromagnetic resonance measurements allow us to conclude that the important out-of-plane anisotropy term is determined by the interface atomic structure. Finally, we put forward two hypotheses to explain why the measured out-of-plane anisotropy is one order of magnitude larger than the [110] in-plane anisotropy. The former is related to a disordered configuration of iron and zinc atoms between bonding and antibonding sites at the interface. Abstract

The electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of Fe thin films epitaxially grown on ZnSe(001) have been investigated by spin polarized inverse photoemission, x-ray photoemission, magneto-optical Kerr effect, and scanning tunneling microscopy. Ultrathin Fe films present no magnetic remanence, while ferromagnetism develops for Fe coverage larger than 7 ML. However, even in this case, the electronic structure of empty states is quite different from that of high quality Fe(001) films. These findings are interpreted in terms of an evolution from a low coverage superparamagnetic phase towards a ferromagnetic phase typical of thicker films, whose electronic properties still remain different from those of ideal Fe(001) films. The consequences for spin-dependent transport across the Fe/ZnSe(001) interface are discussed. more...
