The controlling hydrogeochemical processes of an intermontane aquifer in central Mexico were identified through multivariate statistical analysis. Hierarchical cluster (HCA) and k-means clustering analyses were applied to Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, F−, Cl−, SO42−, NO3−, HCO3−, As, pH and electrical conductivity in 40 groundwater samples collected from shallow and deep wells, where As and F− are contaminants of concern. The effectiveness of each hierarchical and k-means clustering method in explaining solute concentrations within the aquifer and the co-occurrence of arsenic and fluoride was tested by comparing two datasets containing samples from 40 and 36 wells, the former including ionic balance outliers (>10%). When tested without outliers, cluster quality improved by about 5.4% for k-means and 7.3% for HCA, suggesting that HCA is more sensitive to ionic balance outliers. Both algorithms yielded similar clustering solutions in the outlier-free dataset, aligning with the k-means solution for all 40 samples, indicating that k-means was the more robust of the two methods. k-means clustering resolved fluoride and arsenic concentrations into four clusters (K1 to K4) based on variations in Na+, Ca2+, As, and F−. Cluster K2 was a Na-HCO3 water type with high concentrations of As and F. Clusters K1, K3, and K4 exhibited a Ca-HCO3, Na-Ca-HCO3, and Ca-Na-HCO3 water types, respectively, with decreasing As and F concentrations following the order K2 > K3 > K1 > K4. The weathering of evaporites and silicates and Na-Ca ion exchange with clays were the main processes controlling groundwater geochemistry. The dissolution of felsic rocks present in the aquifer fill is a likely source of As and F−, with evaporation acting as an important concentration factor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Maximizing the ability of forests to capture carbon (C) from the atmosphere is critical to mitigate global warming. This is a daunting task as the warming climate is adversely affecting forests with increasing forest fires, pests, and a shift to tree species that can tolerate the newer climate conditions. A large (about 1 million hectares) mixed pine–oak forest in Chihuahua, Mexico, was characterized via 151 plots to determine its floristic diversity and biomass with respect to species, age (tree diameter), and at four altitudinal gradients equally distributed between 1850 and 2850 masl. Higher richness and diversity were found at the altitudinal gradient of 2101–2350 m with 36 species and a Shannon's index (H') of 2.95, and the lowest at 2601–2850 m with 17 species and H' of 2.37. The Sorensen Index showed a high similarity in species composition, with the highest values (71% to 79%) obtained for the 2351–2600 gradient. C storage of the mixed forest increased with altitude from 7.85 Mg C ha−1 in the 1850–2100 m gradient to 14.82 Mg C ha−1 in the 2601–2850 m gradient. C storage in oak decreased with altitude while C storage of pine increased. A class exercise was designed for a college-level geochemistry class to promote inquiry and student participation. In this exercise, real soil data available online was analyzed to evaluate geochemical associations among different soil orders and as a screening tool for anthropogenic metal contamination. Students were asked to read a peer-reviewed research article and use the methods in it as a model for analyzing their dataset. The exercise provided a setting to review and reflect on the changes that rocks undergo to produce soils, with ion substitution and formation of clay minerals as key steps in this process. Both active learning and cooperative learning were involved. Students made decisions about which path to take toward reaching a common goal; they first worked independently and later discussed the results as a group, comparing between three statistical methods applied with the data with respect to their advantages and limitations. The real-life dataset exposed students to the common shortcoming of having less-than-ideal coverage of data forced them to make decisions on how to proceed further with their analysis, and provided a good example of how scientific research is conducted. Our approach allowed students to actively engage in their learning and reach their goals, which were evidenced by their comments and their zeal to complete each part of the exercise; however, historic data collection is required to formalize these assertions.

Lead and zinc (Pb Zn) mines are a common occurrence worldwide; and while approximately 240 mines are active, the vast majority have been abandoned for decades. Abandoned mining wastes represent a serious environmental hazard, as Pb, Zn and associated metals are continuously released into the environment, threatening the health of humans and affecting ecosystems. Iron sulfide minerals, when present, can form acid mine drainage and increase the toxicity by mobilizing the metals into more bioavailable forms. Remediation of the metal waste is costly and, in the case of abandoned wastes, the responsible party(ies) for the cleanup can be difficult to determine, which makes remediation a complex and lengthy process. In this review, we provide a common ground from a wide variety of investigations about concentrations, chemical associations, and potential mobility of Pb, Zn and cadmium (Cd) near abandoned Pb Zn mines. Comparing mobility results is a challenging task, as instead of one standard methodology, there are 4–5 different methods reported. Results show that, as a general consensus, the metal content of soils and sediments vary roughly around 1000 mg/kg for Zn, 100 for Pb and 10 for Cd, and mobilities of Cd > Zn > Pb. Also, mobility is a function of pH, particle size, and formation of secondary minerals. New and novel remediation techniques continue to be developed in laboratories but have seldom been applied to the field. Remediation at most of the sites has consisted of neutralization (e.g. lime,) for acid mine discharge, and leveling followed by phytostabilization. In the latter, amendments (e.g. biochar, fertilizers) are added to boost the efficiency of the treatment. Any remediation method has to be tested before being implemented as the best treatment is site-specific. Potential treatments are described and compared. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Maps showing anomalously high concentrations of 13 different elements in soils within the Mesa Quadrangle of southern Arizona were constructed using information contained in the National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) database. Existing geochemical databases such as NURE provide an inexpensive and accessible resource that can be used to characterize an area geochemically. Anomalies in soils were determined after applying descriptive statistics, logarithmic transformations, elimination of outliers, and manipulation of below-limit detection values. Among the elements with the most number of anomalies, Cu clustered in the southcentral part of the quadrangle where porphyry copper deposits are located, while As, Be, Co, Cr, Zn, Th, and U anomalies were located over exposed Precambrian and Tertiary igneous rocks. In general, anomalies could be related to the rocks cropping out, type of soils, and several mines present in the area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
