In this work we propose a new online, low cost and fast approach based on computer vision and machine learning to determine whether cutting tools used in edge profile milling processes are serviceable or disposable based on their wear level. We created a new dataset of 254 images of edge profile cutting heads which is, to the best of our knowledge, the first publicly available dataset with enough quality for this purpose. All the inserts were segmented and their cutting edges were cropped, obtaining 577 images of cutting edges: 301 functional and 276 disposable. The proposed method is based on (1) dividing the cutting edge image in different regions, called Wear Patches (WP), (2) characterising each one as worn or serviceable using texture descriptors based on different variants of Local Binary Patterns (LBP) and (3) determine, based on the state of these WP, if the cutting edge (and, therefore, the tool) is serviceable or disposable. We proposed and assessed five different patch division configurations. The individual WP were classified by a Support Vector Machine (SVM) with an intersection kernel. The best patch division configuration and texture descriptor for the WP achieves an accuracy of 90.26% in the detection of the disposable cutting edges. These results show a very promising opportunity for automatic wear monitoring in edge profile milling processes.

In this paper, a new system based on combinations of a shape descriptor and a contour descriptor has been proposed for classifying inserts in milling processes according to their wear level following a computer vision based approach. To describe the wear region shape we have proposed a new descriptor called ShapeFeat and its contour has been characterized using the method BORCHIZ that, to the best of our knowledge, achieves the best performance for tool wear monitoring following a computer vision-based approach. Results show that the combination of BORCHIZ with ShapeFeat using a late fusion method improves the classification performance significantly, obtaining an accuracy of 91.44% in the binary classification (i.e. the classification of the wear as high or low) and 82.90% using three target classes (i.e. classification of the wear as high, medium or low). These results outperform the ones obtained by both descriptors used on their own, which achieve accuracies of 88.70 and 80.67% for two and three classes, respectively, using ShapeFeat and 87.06 and 80.24% with B-ORCHIZ. This study yielded encouraging results for the manufacturing community in order to classify automatically the inserts in terms of their wear for milling processes.

Supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs) are natural by-products of galaxy mergers and are expected to be powerful multi-messenger sources. They can be powered by the accretion of matter and then radiate across the electromagnetic spectrum, much like normal active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Current electromagnetic observatories have a good chance of detecting and identifying these systems in the near future. However, precise observational indicators are needed to distinguish individual AGNs from SMBHBs. In this paper, we propose a novel electromagnetic signature from SMBHBs: non-thermal emission produced by the interaction between the jets ejected by the black holes. We study close SMBHBs, which accrete matter from a circumbinary disc and the mini-discs formed around each hole. Each black hole ejects a magnetically dominated jet in the direction of its spin through the Blandford--Znajeck mechanism. We argue that in such a situation, the interaction between the jets can trigger strong magnetic reconnection events, where particles are accelerated and emit non-thermal radiation. Depending on whether the jets are aligned or misaligned, this radiation can have different periodicities. We model the evolution of the particles accelerated during the dual jet interaction and calculate their radiative output, obtaining spectra and providing estimates for the variability timescales. The Argentine Institute of Radio astronomy (IAR) is equipped with two single-dish 30-m radio antennas capable of performing daily observations of pulsars and radio transients in the southern hemisphere at 1.4 GHz. We aim to contribute to pulsar timing studies related to short time-scale interstellar scintillation and searches for sources of continuous gravitational waves. We performed high-cadence (almost daily) and long-duration observations of the bright millisecond pulsar J0437$-$4715 for over a year, gathering more than 700 hours of good-quality data with timing precision better than 1~$\mu$s. We characterize the white and red timing noise in IAR's observations of J0437$-$4715. We quantify the effects of scintillation in this data set and perform single pulsar searches of continuous gravitational waves, setting constraints in the nHz--$\mu$Hz frequency range. We demonstrate IAR's potential for performing pulsar monitoring in the 1.4 GHz radio band for long periods of time with a daily cadence. In particular, we conclude that the ongoing observational campaign of the millisecond pulsar J0437$-$4715 can contribute to increase the sensitivity of the existing pulsar timing arrays., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, 5 tables. version to appear in The Astrophysical Journal

The Argentine Institute of Radio astronomy (IAR) is equipped with two single-dish 30mts radio antennas capable of performing daily observations of pulsars and radio transients in the southern hemisphere at 1.4 GHz. We aim to introduce to the international community the upgrades performed and to show that IAR observatory has become suitable for investigations in numerous areas of pulsar radio astronomy, such as pulsar timing arrays, targeted searches of continuous gravitational waves sources, monitoring of magnetars and glitching pulsars, and studies of short time scale interstellar scintillation. We refurbished the two antennas at IAR to achieve high-quality timing observations. We gathered more than $1\,000$ hours of observations with both antennas to study the timing precision and sensitivity they can achieve. We introduce the new developments for both radio telescopes at IAR. We present observations of the millisecond pulsar J0437$-$4715 with timing precision better than 1~$\mu$s. We also present a follow-up of the reactivation of the magnetar XTE J1810--197 and the measurement and monitoring of the latest (Feb. 1st. 2019) glitch of the Vela pulsar (J0835--4510). We show that IAR is capable of performing pulsar monitoring in the 1.4 GHz radio band for long periods of time with a daily cadence. This opens the possibility of pursuing several goals in pulsar science, including coordinated multi-wavelength observations with other observatories. In particular, observations of the millisecond pulsar J0437$-$4715 will increase the gravitational wave sensitivity of the NANOGrav array in their current blind spot. We present a compact and versatile experimental system for producing Bose-Bose superfluid mixtures composed of sodium and potassium atoms. The compact design combines the necessary ultra-high vacuum enviroment for ultracold atom experiments with efficient atomic fluxes by using two-dimensional magneto-optical traps as independent source of atoms. We demonstrate the performance of this new machine by producing a Bose-Einstein condensate of $^{23}$Na with $\sim 1 \times 10^{6}~$atoms. The tunability of Na-K bosonic mixtures is particularly interesting for studies regarding the nucleation of vortices and quantum turbulence. In this direction, the large optical access of the science chamber along the vertical direction provides the conditions to implement high resolution optical setups for imaging and rotating the condensate with a stirring beam. We show the nucleation of a vortex lattice with up to 14 vortices in the $^{23}$Na BEC, attesting the efficiency of the experimental apparatus in studying the dynamics of vortices.

We present a high-precision chemical analysis of iota Horologii, a planet-host field star thought to have formed in the Hyades. Elements with atomic number 6<=Z<=30 have abundances that are in excellent agreement with those of the cluster within the +/-0.01 dex (or ~2%) precision errors. Heavier elements show a range of abundances such that about half of the Z>30 species analyzed are consistent with those of the Hyades, while the other half are marginally enhanced by 0.03+/-0.01 dex (~7+/-2%). The lithium abundance, A(Li), is very low compared to the well-defined A(Li)-Teff relation of the cluster. For its Teff, iota Horologii's lithium content is about half the Hyades'. Attributing the enhanced lithium depletion to the planet would require a peculiar rotation rate, which we are unable to confirm. Our analysis of the star's chromospheric activity suggests Prot=5d, which is significantly shorter than previously reported. Models of Galactic orbits place iota Horologii hundreds of parsecs away from the Hyades cluster at formation. Thus, we find the claim of a shared birthplace very difficult to justify., Comment: ApJ, in press
