Background: Excess bodyweight is a major public health concern. However, few worldwide comparative analyses of long-term trends of body-mass index (BMI) have been done, and none have used recent national health examination surveys. We estimated worldwide trends in population mean BMI.Methods: We estimated trends and their uncertainties of mean BMI for adults 20 years and older in 199 countries and territories. We obtained data from published and unpublished health examination surveys and epidemiological studies (960 country-years and 9·1 million participants). For each sex, we used a Bayesian hierarchical model to estimate mean BMI by age, country, and year, accounting for whether a study was nationally representative.Findings: Between 1980 and 2008, mean BMI worldwide increased by 0·4 kg/m(2) per decade (95% uncertainty interval 0·2-0·6, posterior probability of being a true increase >0·999) for men and 0·5 kg/m(2) per decade (0·3-0·7, posterior probability >0·999) for women. National BMI change for women ranged from non-significant decreases in 19 countries to increases of more than 2·0 kg/m(2) per decade (posterior probabilities >0·99) in nine countries in Oceania. Male BMI increased in all but eight countries, by more than 2 kg/m(2) per decade in Nauru and Cook Islands (posterior probabilities >0·999). Male and female BMIs in 2008 were highest in some Oceania countries, reaching 33·9 kg/m(2) (32·8-35·0) for men and 35·0 kg/m(2) (33·6-36·3) for women in Nauru. Female BMI was lowest in Bangladesh (20·5 kg/m(2), 19·8-21·3) and male BMI in Democratic Republic of the Congo 19·9 kg/m(2) (18·2-21·5), with BMI less than 21·5 kg/m(2) for both sexes in a few countries in sub-Saharan Africa, and east, south, and southeast Asia. The USA had the highest BMI of high-income countries. In 2008, an estimated 1·46 billion adults (1·41-1·51 billion) worldwide had BMI of 25 kg/m(2) or greater, of these 205 million men (193-217 million) and 297 million women (280-315 million) were obese.Interpretation: Globally, mean BMI has increased since 1980. The trends since 1980, and mean population BMI in 2008, varied substantially between nations. Interventions and policies that can curb or reverse the increase, and mitigate the health effects of high BMI by targeting its metabolic mediators, are needed in most countries.Funding: Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and WHO. The magnetic proximity effect (MPE) has recently been explored to manipulate interfacial properties of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD)/ferromagnet heterostructures for use in spintronics and valleytronics. However, a full understanding of the MPE and its temperature and magnetic field evolution in these systems is lacking. In this study, the MPE has been probed in Pt/WS 2 /BPIO (biphase iron oxide, Fe 3 O 4 and α-Fe 2 O 3 ) heterostructures through a comprehensive investigation of their magnetic and transport properties using magnetometry, four-probe resistivity, and anomalous Hall effect (AHE) measurements. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to complement the experimental findings. We found that the presence of monolayer WS 2 flakes reduces the magnetization of BPIO and hence the total magnetization of Pt/WS 2 /BPIO at T > ~120 K-the Verwey transition temperature of Fe 3 O 4 ( T V ). However, an enhanced magnetization is achieved at T < T V . In the latter case, a comparative analysis of the transport properties of Pt/WS 2 /BPIO and Pt/BPIO from AHE measurements reveals ferromagnetic coupling at the WS 2 /BPIO interface. Our study forms the foundation for understanding MPE-mediated interfacial properties and paves a new pathway for designing 2D TMD/magnet heterostructures for applications in spintronics, opto-spincaloritronics, and valleytronics.

We report a systematic investigation of the magnetic properties including the exchange bias (EB) effect in an iron oxide nanocube system with tunable phase and average size (10, 15, 24, 34, and 43 nm). X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy reveal the presence of Fe 3 O 4 , FeO, and α -Fe 2 O 3 phases in the nanocubes, in which the volume fraction of each phase varies depending upon particle size. While the Fe 3 O 4 phase is dominant in all and tends to grow with increasing particle size, the FeO phase appears to coexist with the Fe 3 O 4 phase in 10, 15, and 24 nm nanocubes but disappears in 34 and 43 nm nanocubes. The nanocubes exposed to air resulted in an α -Fe 2 O 3 oxidized surface layer whose thickness scaled with particle size resulting in a shell made of α -Fe 2 O 3 phase and a core containing Fe 3 O 4 or a mixture of both Fe 3 O 4 and FeO phases. Magnetometry indicates that the nanocubes undergo Morin (of the α -Fe 2 O 3 phase) and Verwey (of the Fe 3 O 4 phase) transitions at ∼250 K and ∼120 K, respectively. For smaller nanocubes (10, 15, and 24 nm), the EB effect is observed below 200 K, of which the 15 nm nanocubes showed the most prominent EB with optimal antiferromagnetic (AFM) FeO phase. No EB is reported for larger nanocubes (34 and 43 nm). The observed EB effect is ascribed to the strong interfacial coupling between the ferrimagnetic (FiM) Fe 3 O 4 phase and AFM FeO phase, while its absence is related to the disappearance of the FeO phase. The Fe 3 O 4 / α -Fe 2 O 3 (FiM/AFM) interfaces are found to have negligible influence on the EB. Our findings shed light on the complexity of the EB effect in mixed-phase iron oxide nanosystems and pave the way to design exchange-coupled nanomaterials with desirable magnetic properties for biomedical and spintronic applications., (© 2022 IOP Publishing Ltd.)

Magnetic field- and polarization-dependent measurements on bright and dark excitons in monolayer WSe 2 combined with time-dependent density functional theory calculations reveal intriguing phenomena. Magnetic fields up to 25 T parallel to the WSe 2 plane lead to a partial brightening of the energetically lower lying exciton, leading to an increase of the dephasing time. Using a broadband femtosecond pulse excitation, the bright and partially allowed excitonic state can be excited simultaneously, resulting in coherent quantum beating between these states. The magnetic fields perpendicular to the WSe 2 plane energetically shift the bright and dark excitons relative to each other, resulting in the hybridization of the states at the K and K' valleys. Our experimental results are well captured by time-dependent density functional theory calculations. These observations show that magnetic fields can be used to control the coherent dephasing and coupling of the optical excitations in atomically thin semiconductors.

Reduced dimensionality and interlayer coupling in van der Waals materials gives rise to fundamentally different electronic 1 , optical 2 and many-body quantum 3-5 properties in monolayers compared with the bulk. This layer-dependence permits the discovery of novel material properties in the monolayer regime. Ferromagnetic order in two-dimensional materials is a coveted property that would allow fundamental studies of spin behaviour in low dimensions and enable new spintronics applications 6-8 . Recent studies have shown that for the bulk-ferromagnetic layered materials CrI 3 (ref. 9 ) and Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 (ref. 10 ), ferromagnetic order is maintained down to the ultrathin limit at low temperatures. Contrary to these observations, we report the emergence of strong ferromagnetic ordering for monolayer VSe 2 , a material that is paramagnetic in the bulk 11,12 . Importantly, the ferromagnetic ordering with a large magnetic moment persists to above room temperature, making VSe 2 an attractive material for van der Waals spintronics applications.

Objective(s): We studied women's experiences seeking and receiving second-trimester abortion care in two geographically and legislatively different settings to inform ways to improve abortion care access and services., Study Design: We conducted in-depth interviews with women who obtained second-trimester abortion care. Themes from the interviews were then used to inform a self-administered survey, which was completed by 108 women who received second-trimester abortion care in the Northeast and Midwest. We calculated descriptive statistics and used chi-squared and t-tests to compare responses., Results: We interviewed eight women and surveyed 108 women. Most interviewees and 65.2% of survey respondents reported difficulties accessing care. Although most interview and survey respondents had insurance, a slight majority reported difficulty funding care. All interviewees and 57.9% of survey respondents reported positive experiences with providers, with many interviewees and 62.0% of survey respondents saying their abortion care was better than their usual health care. Most interviewees and 75.8% of survey respondents reported pain as low to moderate, and the majority of participants reported it was the same or less than expected. Knowledge about abortion restrictions was low. Most interviewees and 68.4% survey respondents disagreed with restrictions on insurance coverage of abortion. Common recommendations to improve experiences were to ensure travel and financial support and to decrease wait times at clinics. There were few regional differences among outcomes., Conclusion(s): Women seeking second-trimester abortion in these locations reported positive abortion experiences. However, they had to overcome significant obstacles to obtain care., Implications: This is the first study to systematically research women's second-trimester care experiences in two different regions of the United States. Regardless of location, women experienced barriers due to policies that impose gestational age restrictions, limit provider availability (consequently increasing wait times), and increase costs. Despite a relatively low fertility rate, maternal mortality in Ghana still remains high. According to the Ghana Demographic and Health Surveys, about 22% of Ghanaian women of reproductive age currently use contraception. We analyzed contraceptive use among a representative sample of women in Accra, Ghana, to better understand contraceptive use patterns. We used data from two cross-sectional surveys of a representative cohort of women in Accra. In 2003, 28.9% of sexually active women used a contraceptive method. In 2008, 31.5% of sexually active women used a contraceptive method. Additionally, we observed high rates of discontinuation-from 64.1% among those using longer-acting methods to 82.1% among those using traditional methods-between years. Further research on women's contraceptive decision-making is needed to explain these patterns and to ensure that family planning interventions meet the needs of women in Ghana.

Introduction: This paper identifies factors influencing differences in the prevalence of diarrhea, fever and acute respiratory infection (ARI), and health seeking behavior among caregivers of children under age five in rural Tanzania., Methods: Using cross-sectional survey data collected in Kilombero, Ulanga, and Rufiji districts, the analysis included 1,643 caregivers who lived with 2,077 children under five years old. Logistic multivariate and multinomial regressions were used to analyze factors related to disease prevalence and to health seeking behavior., Results: One quarter of the children had experienced fever in the past two weeks, 12.0 % had diarrhea and 6.7 % experienced ARI. Children two years of age and older were less likely to experience morbidity than children under one year [ORfever = 0.77, 95 % CI 0.61-0.96; ORdiarrhea = 0.26, 95 % CI 0.18-0.37; ORARI = 0.60 95 % CI 0.41-0.89]. Children aged two and older were more likely than children under one to receive no care or to receive care at home, rather than to receive care at a facility [RRRdiarrhea = 3.47, 95 % CI 1.19-10.17 for "No care"]. Children living with an educated caregiver were less likely to receive no care or home care rather than care at a facility as compared to those who lived with an uneducated caregiver [RRRdiarrhea = 0.28, 95 % CI 1.10-0.79 for "No care"]. Children living in the wealthiest households were less likely to receive no care or home care for fever as compared to those who lived poorest households. Children living more than 1 km from health facility were more likely to receive no care or to receive home care for diarrhea rather than care at a facility as compared to those living less than 1 km from a facility [RRRdiarrhea = 3.50, 95 % CI 1.13-10.82 for "No care"]. Finally, caregivers who lived with more than one child under age five were more likely to provide no care or home care rather than to seek treatment at a facility as compared to those living with only one child under five., Conclusions: Our results suggest that child age, caregiver education attainment, and household wealth and location may be associated with childhood illness and care seeking behavior patterns. Interventions should be explored that target children and caregivers according to these factors, thereby better addressing barriers and optimizing health outcomes especially for children at risk of dying before the age of five.

Importance: Understanding the major health problems in the United States and how they are changing over time is critical for informing national health policy., Objectives: To measure the burden of diseases, injuries, and leading risk factors in the United States from 1990 to 2010 and to compare these measurements with those of the 34 countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries., Design: We used the systematic analysis of descriptive epidemiology of 291 diseases and injuries, 1160 sequelae of these diseases and injuries, and 67 risk factors or clusters of risk factors from 1990 to 2010 for 187 countries developed for the Global Burden of Disease 2010 Study to describe the health status of the United States and to compare US health outcomes with those of 34 OECD countries. Years of life lost due to premature mortality (YLLs) were computed by multiplying the number of deaths at each age by a reference life expectancy at that age. Years lived with disability (YLDs) were calculated by multiplying prevalence (based on systematic reviews) by the disability weight (based on population-based surveys) for each sequela; disability in this study refers to any short- or long-term loss of health. Disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) were estimated as the sum of YLDs and YLLs. Deaths and DALYs related to risk factors were based on systematic reviews and meta-analyses of exposure data and relative risks for risk-outcome pairs. Healthy life expectancy (HALE) was used to summarize overall population health, accounting for both length of life and levels of ill health experienced at different ages., Results: US life expectancy for both sexes combined increased from 75.2 years in 1990 to 78.2 years in 2010; during the same period, HALE increased from 65.8 years to 68.1 years. The diseases and injuries with the largest number of YLLs in 2010 were ischemic heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and road injury. Age-standardized YLL rates increased for Alzheimer disease, drug use disorders, chronic kidney disease, kidney cancer, and falls. The diseases with the largest number of YLDs in 2010 were low back pain, major depressive disorder, other musculoskeletal disorders, neck pain, and anxiety disorders. As the US population has aged, YLDs have comprised a larger share of DALYs than have YLLs. The leading risk factors related to DALYs were dietary risks, tobacco smoking, high body mass index, high blood pressure, high fasting plasma glucose, physical inactivity, and alcohol use. Among 34 OECD countries between 1990 and 2010, the US rank for the age-standardized death rate changed from 18th to 27th, for the age-standardized YLL rate from 23rd to 28th, for the age-standardized YLD rate from 5th to 6th, for life expectancy at birth from 20th to 27th, and for HALE from 14th to 26th., Conclusions and Relevance: From 1990 to 2010, the United States made substantial progress in improving health. Life expectancy at birth and HALE increased, all-cause death rates at all ages decreased, and age-specific rates of years lived with disability remained stable. However, morbidity and chronic disability now account for nearly half of the US health burden, and improvements in population health in the United States have not kept pace with advances in population health in other wealthy nations.

In situ high-pressure Raman spectroscopy, with corroborating density functional calculations, is used to probe C-H chemical bonds formed when dissociated hydrogen diffuses from a platinum nanocatalyst to three distinct graphenic surfaces. At ambient temperature, hydrogenation and dehydrogenation are reversible in the combined presence of an active catalyst and oxygen heteroatoms. Hydrogenation apparently occurs through surface diffusion in a chemisorbed state, while dehydrogenation requires diffusion of the chemisorbed species back to an active catalyst.

Background: Quantification of the disease burden caused by different risks informs prevention by providing an account of health loss different to that provided by a disease-by-disease analysis. No complete revision of global disease burden caused by risk factors has been done since a comparative risk assessment in 2000, and no previous analysis has assessed changes in burden attributable to risk factors over time., Methods: We estimated deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs; sum of years lived with disability [YLD] and years of life lost [YLL]) attributable to the independent effects of 67 risk factors and clusters of risk factors for 21 regions in 1990 and 2010. We estimated exposure distributions for each year, region, sex, and age group, and relative risks per unit of exposure by systematically reviewing and synthesising published and unpublished data. We used these estimates, together with estimates of cause-specific deaths and DALYs from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010, to calculate the burden attributable to each risk factor exposure compared with the theoretical-minimum-risk exposure. We incorporated uncertainty in disease burden, relative risks, and exposures into our estimates of attributable burden., Findings: In 2010, the three leading risk factors for global disease burden were high blood pressure (7·0% [95% uncertainty interval 6·2-7·7] of global DALYs), tobacco smoking including second-hand smoke (6·3% [5·5-7·0]), and alcohol use (5·5% [5·0-5·9]). In 1990, the leading risks were childhood underweight (7·9% [6·8-9·4]), household air pollution from solid fuels (HAP; 7·0% [5·6-8·3]), and tobacco smoking including second-hand smoke (6·1% [5·4-6·8]). Dietary risk factors and physical inactivity collectively accounted for 10·0% (95% UI 9·2-10·8) of global DALYs in 2010, with the most prominent dietary risks being diets low in fruits and those high in sodium. Several risks that primarily affect childhood communicable diseases, including unimproved water and sanitation and childhood micronutrient deficiencies, fell in rank between 1990 and 2010, with unimproved water and sanitation accounting for 0·9% (0·4-1·6) of global DALYs in 2010. However, in most of sub-Saharan Africa childhood underweight, HAP, and non-exclusive and discontinued breastfeeding were the leading risks in 2010, while HAP was the leading risk in south Asia. The leading risk factor in Eastern Europe, most of Latin America, and southern sub-Saharan Africa in 2010 was alcohol use; in most of Asia, North Africa and Middle East, and central Europe it was high blood pressure. Despite declines, tobacco smoking including second-hand smoke remained the leading risk in high-income north America and western Europe. High body-mass index has increased globally and it is the leading risk in Australasia and southern Latin America, and also ranks high in other high-income regions, North Africa and Middle East, and Oceania., Interpretation: Worldwide, the contribution of different risk factors to disease burden has changed substantially, with a shift away from risks for communicable diseases in children towards those for non-communicable diseases in adults. These changes are related to the ageing population, decreased mortality among children younger than 5 years, changes in cause-of-death composition, and changes in risk factor exposures. New evidence has led to changes in the magnitude of key risks including unimproved water and sanitation, vitamin A and zinc deficiencies, and ambient particulate matter pollution. The extent to which the epidemiological shift has occurred and what the leading risks currently are varies greatly across regions. Background: Overweight and obesity prevalence are commonly used for public and policy communication of the extent of the obesity epidemic, yet comparable estimates of trends in overweight and obesity prevalence by country are not available., Methods: We estimated trends between 1980 and 2008 in overweight and obesity prevalence and their uncertainty for adults 20 years of age and older in 199 countries and territories. Data were from a previous study, which used a Bayesian hierarchical model to estimate mean body mass index (BMI) based on published and unpublished health examination surveys and epidemiologic studies. Here, we used the estimated mean BMIs in a regression model to predict overweight and obesity prevalence by age, country, year, and sex. The uncertainty of the estimates included both those of the Bayesian hierarchical model and the uncertainty due to cross-walking from mean BMI to overweight and obesity prevalence., Results: The global age-standardized prevalence of obesity nearly doubled from 6.4% (95% uncertainty interval 5.7-7.2%) in 1980 to 12.0% (11.5-12.5%) in 2008. Half of this rise occurred in the 20 years between 1980 and 2000, and half occurred in the 8 years between 2000 and 2008. The age-standardized prevalence of overweight increased from 24.6% (22.7-26.7%) to 34.4% (33.2-35.5%) during the same 28-year period. In 2008, female obesity prevalence ranged from 1.4% (0.7-2.2%) in Bangladesh and 1.5% (0.9-2.4%) in Madagascar to 70.4% (61.9-78.9%) in Tonga and 74.8% (66.7-82.1%) in Nauru. Male obesity was below 1% in Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Ethiopia, and was highest in Cook Islands (60.1%, 52.6-67.6%) and Nauru (67.9%, 60.5-75.0%)., Conclusions: Globally, the prevalence of overweight and obesity has increased since 1980, and the increase has accelerated. Although obesity increased in most countries, levels and trends varied substantially. These data on trends in overweight and obesity may be used to set targets for obesity prevalence as requested at the United Nations high-level meeting on Prevention and Control of NCDs.

Background: At least 14 stratifiers exist to assess recurrence risk, chemotherapy response, and overall survival (OS) in women with early-stage breast cancer (ESBC). These stratifiers have not been compared using a recently developed rigorous framework. We performed a systematic review of the literature on clinical validity/utility, change in clinical practice, and economic implications of ESBC stratifiers., Methods: A systematic literature search was performed using PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and bibliographies of relevant studies. Data were extracted by two investigators and graded using a previously published framework. The Level-of-Evidence determination for each study was summarized, and the studies that provide evidence on change in clinical practice and economic implications are reported., Results: Fifty-six articles published original evidence addressing the 21-gene recurrence score (n = 31), 70-gene signature (n = 14), Adjuvant! Online (n = 12), 5-antibody immunohistochemistry panel (n = 3), 5-gene expression index (n = 1), and 14-gene signature (n = 1). The 21-gene recurrence score satisfied Level I evidence (the highest level of evidence among five levels) for estimating distant recurrence risk (DRR), OS, and response to adjuvant chemotherapy, and Level II for estimating local recurrence risk. The 5-antibody immunohistochemistry panel and 70-gene signature satisfied Level II evidence for estimating DRR and OS. Adjuvant! Online satisfied Level II evidence for estimating DRR, OS, and chemotherapy response. The 5-gene expression index satisfied Level III evidence for predicting DRR. The 14-gene signature satisfied Level III evidence for predicting DRR and OS. Ten studies reported changes in clinical practice patterns; seven studies reported economic implications., Conclusion: The available evidence on the ability of stratifiers to predict risks of recurrence and response to chemotherapy in ESBC is growing. Level-of-Evidence determinations using the newer framework provide a solid scientific foundation for clinical recommendations.

Purpose: The primary tissue-site origin in over 4% of cancers remains uncertain despite thorough clinicopathological evaluation. This study assessed the effect of a Food and Drug Administration-cleared 2,000- gene-expression-profiling (GEP) test on primary tissue-site working diagnoses and management for metastatic and poorly differentiated cancers., Methods: Clinical information was collected from physicians ordering the GEP test for patients with difficult to diagnose cancers. Endpoints included diagnostic procedures, physicians' working diagnoses and treatment recommendations before and after GEP result availability, and physician reports of the test's usefulness for clinical decision making. Patient date of death was obtained, with a minimum of one year follow-up from date of biopsy., Results: Sixty-five physicians participated in the study (n=107 patients). Before GEP, patients underwent 3.2 investigations on average (e.g., radiology, endoscopy). Ten immunohistochemistry tests were used per biopsy (SD 5.2). After GEP testing, physicians changed the primary working diagnosis for 50% of patients (95% CI: 43%,58%) and management for 65% of patients (95% CI: 58%,73%). With GEP results, the recommendation for guideline-consistent chemotherapy increased from 42% to 65% of patients, and the recommendation for non-guideline-consistent regimens declined from 28% to 13%. At last follow-up, 69 patients had died, and median survival was 14.0 months (95% CI: 10.2,18.6). Thirty-three percent of patients were alive at 2 years., Conclusion: In patients with difficult-to-diagnose cancers, GEP changed the working diagnosis and management for the majority of patients. Patients for whom the GEP test was ordered had longer median survival than that historically reported for patients enrolled in treatment trials for cancer of unknown primary.

This review addresses the field of nanoscience as viewed through the lens of the scientific career of Peter Eklund, thus with a special focus on nanocarbons and nanowires. Peter brought to his research an intense focus, imagination, tenacity, breadth and ingenuity rarely seen in modern science. His goal was to capture the essential physics of natural phenomena. This attitude also guides our writing: we focus on basic principles, without sacrificing accuracy, while hoping to convey an enthusiasm for the science commensurate with Peter's. The term 'colloquial review' is intended to capture this style of presentation. The diverse phenomena of condensed matter physics involve electrons, phonons and the structures within which excitations reside. The 'nano' regime presents particularly interesting and challenging science. Finite size effects play a key role, exemplified by the discrete electronic and phonon spectra of C(60) and other fullerenes. The beauty of such molecules (as well as nanotubes and graphene) is reflected by the theoretical principles that govern their behavior. As to the challenge, 'nano' requires special care in materials preparation and treatment, since the surface-to-volume ratio is so high; they also often present difficulties of acquiring an experimental signal, since the samples can be quite small. All of the atoms participate in the various phenomena, without any genuinely 'bulk' properties. Peter was a master of overcoming such challenges. The primary activity of Eklund's research was to measure and understand the vibrations of atoms in carbon materials. Raman spectroscopy was very dear to Peter. He published several papers on the theory of phonons (Eklund et al 1995a Carbon 33 959-72, Eklund et al 1995b Thin Solid Films 257 211-32, Eklund et al 1992 J. Phys. Chem. Solids 53 1391-413, Dresselhaus and Eklund 2000 Adv. Phys. 49 705-814) and many more papers on measuring phonons (Pimenta et al 1998b Phys. Rev. B 58 16016-9, Rao et al 1997a Nature 338 257-9, Rao et al 1997b Phys. Rev. B 55 4766-73, Rao et al 1997c Science 275 187-91, Rao et al 1998 Thin Solid Films 331 141-7). His careful sample treatment and detailed Raman analysis contributed greatly to the elucidation of photochemical polymerization of solid C(60) (Rao et al 1993b Science 259 955-7). He developed Raman spectroscopy as a standard tool for gauging the diameter of a single-walled carbon nanotube (Bandow et al 1998 Phys. Rev. Lett. 80 3779-82), distinguishing metallic versus semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes, (Pimenta et al 1998a J. Mater. Res. 13 2396-404) and measuring the number of graphene layers in a peeled flake of graphite (Gupta et al 2006 Nano Lett. 6 2667-73). For these and other ground breaking contributions to carbon science he received the Graffin Lecture award from the American Carbon Society in 2005, and the Japan Carbon Prize in 2008. As a material, graphite has come full circle. The 1970s renaissance in the science of graphite intercalation compounds paved the way for a later explosion in nanocarbon research by illuminating many beautiful fundamental phenomena, subsequently rediscovered in other forms of nanocarbon. In 1985, Smalley, Kroto, Curl, Heath and O'Brien discovered carbon cage molecules called fullerenes in the soot ablated from a rotating graphite target (Kroto et al 1985 Nature 318 162-3). At that time, Peter's research was focused mainly on the oxide-based high-temperature superconductors. He switched to fullerene research soon after the discovery that an electric arc can prepare fullerenes in bulk quantities (Haufler et al 1990 J. Phys. Chem. 94 8634-6). Later fullerene research spawned nanotubes, and nanotubes spawned a newly exploding research effort on single-layer graphene. Graphene has hence evolved from an oversimplified model of graphite (Wallace 1947 Phys. Rev. 71 622-34) to a new member of the nanocarbon family exhibiting extraordinary electronic properties. Eklund's career spans this 35-year odyssey.

A complete understanding of the interaction between electromagnetic radiation and semiconductor nanowires (NWs) is required in order to further develop a new generation of opto-electronic and photonic devices based on these nanosystems. The reduced dimensionality and high aspect ratio of nanofilaments can induce strong polarization dependence of the light absorption, emission and scattering, leading in some cases to the observation of optical antenna effects. In this work we present the first systematic study of polarized Rayleigh back-scattering from individual crystalline semiconductor NWs with known crystalline structure, orientation and diameters. To explain our experimental Rayleigh polar patterns, we propose a simple theory that relies on a secondary calculation of the volume-averaged internal electromagnetic fields inside the NW. These results revealed that the internal and emitted field can be enhanced depending on the polarization with respect to the NW axis; we also show that this effect strongly depends on the NW diameter.

We report the first observation of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) from semiconductor nanowires (SNWs). Using continuous wave (CW) excitation (514.5 nm), very strong nonlinear SRS was observed in backscattering from short segments of crystalline GaP NWs with diameter d = 210 nm when the wire length L < 1.1 microm. The SRS intensity was found to increase dramatically with decreasing L down to 270 nm. The effective threshold pump power P(T) needed to observe the SRS is quite small. Indeed, we observe values of P(T) 3 orders of magnitude smaller than reported for bulk crystals of strongly nonlinear LiIO(3) and Ba(NO(3))(2) and 2 orders of magnitude smaller than that reported recently for SRS from "top-down" fabricated silicon microwaveguides. P(T) was observed to decrease linearly with decreasing L. Our data are discussed in terms of theoretical results developed for dielectric cavities. The quality factors Q for the short GaP cylindrical cavities studied here are estimated to be approximately 15,000. Our results suggest that SNWs may find applications as Raman lasers.

We report on experimental studies of NH3 adsorption/desorption on graphene surfaces. The study employs bottom-gated graphene field effect transistors supported on Si/SiO2 substrates. Detection of NH3 occurs through the shift of the source-drain resistance maximum ('Dirac peak') with the gate voltage. The observed shift of the Dirac peak toward negative gate voltages in response to NH3 exposure is consistent with a small charge transfer (f approximately 0.068 +/- 0.004 electrons per molecule at pristine sites) from NH3 to graphene. The desorption kinetics involves a very rapid loss of NH3 from the top surface and a much slower removal from the bottom surface at the interface with the SiO2 that we identify with a Fickian diffusion process.

Results are presented from an experimental and theoretical study of the electronic properties of back-gated graphene field effect transistors (FETs) on Si/SiO(2) substrates. The excess charge on the graphene was observed by sweeping the gate voltage to determine the charge neutrality point in the graphene. Devices exposed to laboratory environment for several days were always found to be initially p-type. After approximately 20 h at 200 degrees C in approximately 5 x 10(-7) Torr vacuum, the FET slowly evolved to n-type behavior with a final excess electron density on the graphene of approximately 4 x 10(12) e/cm(2). This value is in excellent agreement with our theoretical calculations on SiO(2), where we have used molecular dynamics to build the SiO(2) structure and then density functional theory to compute the electronic structure. The essential theoretical result is that the SiO(2) has a significant surface state density just below the conduction band edge that donates electrons to the graphene to balance the chemical potential at the interface. An electrostatic model for the FET is also presented that produces an expression for the gate bias dependence of the carrier density.

We report results of studies on the sheet resistance and optical transmission of thin films of boron-doped single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Boron doping was carried out by exposure of SWNTs to B 2O 3 and NH 3 at 900 degrees C and 1-3 atom % boron was found in the SWNT bundles via electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Boron doping was found to downshift the positions of the optical absorption bands associated with the van Hove singularities (E 11 (s) E 22 (s) and E 11 (m)) by approximately 30 meV relative to their positions in acid-treated and annealed SWNTs. Raman spectroscopy, EELS, and optical data are consistent with the picture that a few atom % boron has been substituted for carbon in the sp (2) framework of SWNTs. Finally, our results show that boron doping does not significantly affect the optical transmittance in the visible region. However, boron doping lowers the sheet resistance by approximately 30% relative to pristine SWNT films from the same batch. Boron-doped SWNT may provide a better approach to touch-screen technology.

We report on investigations of the interaction of light with nanoscale antennae made from crystalline GaP nanowires (NWs). Using Raman scattering, we have observed strong optical antenna effects which we identify with internal standing wave photon modes of the wire. The antenna effects were probed in individual NWs whose diameters are in the range 40 < d < 300 nm. The data and our calculations show that the nature of the backscattered light is critically dependent on the interplay between a photon confinement effect and bulk Raman scattering. At small diameter, d < 65 nm, the NWs are found to act like a nearly perfect dipole antenna and the bulk Raman selection rules are masked leading to a polarized scattering intensity function I R approximately cos4 theta. Underscoring the importance of this work is the realization that a fundamental understanding of the "optical antenna effect" in semiconducting NWs is essential to the analysis of all electro-optic effects in small diameter filaments.

The growth of Diluted Magnetic Semiconducting (DMS) Zn(1-x)Mn(x)S (0 < or = x < 0.6) nanowires (NWs) using a three-zone furnace and two solid sources is reported. The approach is generally applicable to many binary and ternary NW systems that grow by the Vapor-Liquid-Solid growth mechanism. Mn concentration was controlled by the temperature of the Mn source. The Zn/Mn ratio was found to determine the crystalline structure, i.e., wurtzite or zinc blende. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy measurements revealed highly crystalline single phase NWs. The vibrational properties of the DMS NWs with different Zn/Mn ratios were studied by correlating their Raman scattering spectra with the composition measured by Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS). We find that the transverse optical (TO) phonon band disappears at the lowest Mn concentrations, while the longitudinal optical (LO) phonon band position was found insensitive to x. Three additional Raman bands were observed between the ZnS q = 0 TO and LO phonons when Mn atoms were present in the NWs. These bands are similar to those reported previously for bulk Zn(1-x)Mn(x)S and their origin is still controversial.

We provide evidence of low-temperature hydrogen evolution and possible hydrogen trapping in an anthracite coal derivative, formed via reactive ball milling with cyclohexene. No molecular hydrogen is added to the process. Raman-active molecular hydrogen vibrations are apparent in samples at atmospheric conditions (300 K, 1 bar) for samples prepared 1 year previously and stored in ambient air. Hydrogen evolves slowly at room temperature and is accelerated upon sample heating, with a first increase in hydrogen evolution occurring at approximately 60 degrees C. Subsequent chemical modification leads to the observation of crystalline carbons, including nanocrystalline diamond surrounded by graphene ribbons, other sp2-sp3 transition regions, purely graphitic regions, and a previously unidentified crystalline carbon form surrounded by amorphous carbon. The combined evidence for hydrogen trapping and carbon crystallization suggests hydrogen-induced crystallization of the amorphous carbon materials, as metastable hydrogenated carbons formed via the high-energy milling process rearrange into more thermodynamically stable carbon forms and molecular hydrogen.

Wet chemical methods involving ultrasound and amide solvents were used to purify and separate large bundles of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) into individual nanotubes that could then be transported to silicon or mica substrates. The SWNTs studied were produced by the arc-discharge process. Dry oxidation was used in an initial step to remove amorphous carbon. Subsequently, two acid purification schemes were investigated (HCl- and HNO(3)-reflux) to remove the metal growth catalyst (Ni-Y). Finally, ultrasonic dispersion of isolated tubes into either N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) or N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) was carried out. Raman scattering, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and electron microscopy were used to study the evolution of the products. Raman scattering was used to probe possible wall damage during the chemical processing. We found that both HCl and HNO(3) could be used to successfully remove the Ni-Y below approximately 1 wt %. However, the HNO(3)-reflux produced significant wall damage (that could be reversed by vacuum annealing at 1000 degrees C). In the dispersion step, both amide solvents (DMF and NMP) produced a high degree of isolated tubes in the final product, and no damage during this dispersion step was observed. HNO(3)-refluxed tubes were found to disperse the best into the amide solvents, perhaps because of significant wall functionalization. AFM was used to study the filament diameter and length distributions in the final product, and interesting differences in these distributions were observed, depending on the chemical processing route.
