1. A Bibliometric Analysis of Highly Cited Artificial Intelligence Publications in Science Citation Index Expanded

Abstract

This study aimed to identify and analyze the characteristics of highly cited publications in the field of artificial intelligence within the Science Citation Index Expanded from 1991 to 2022. The assessment focused on documents that garnered 100 citations or more from the Web of Science Core Collection, spanning from their publication date to the end of 2022. Various aspects of these documents were analyzed, encompassing document types, the distribution of annual production, the average number of citations per publication, Web of Science categories, and journals. Moreover, the publication performance of countries, institutions, and authors underwent evaluation through six publication indicators and associated citation metrics. To facilitate a comprehensive comparison of the authors research performance, the Y-index was employed. The outcomes of the analysis revealed that a majority of the highly cited articles were published within the Web of Science categories of "artificial intelligence computer science" and "electrical and electronic engineering". Notably, the United States exhibited dominance across all six publication indicators. Within the realm of average citations per publication, the United Kingdom emerged as a leader for independent articles, first-author articles, and corresponding-author articles. Exceptionally, the Chinese Academy of Sciences in China and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA, contributed significantly. The significant impact of highly cited articles extended to the output of Stanford University in the USA. B.L. Bassler published the most highly cited articles. Upon employing the Y-index analysis, J.E.P. Santos was identified as having the highest potential for publication. In addition to the primary analysis, this study also presented nine classic articles that have left an indelible mark on artificial intelligence research.

Abstract

The current situation of open research data in Spanish university repositories is analyzed by means of twelve indicators that allow us to compare them with each other. The twelve self-developed indicators deal with research datasets and institutional policies linked to open access, as well as some of the key characteristics of the repositories. The methodology used consists of comparing the repositories of the different universities linked to REBIUN. The result has been that datasets in institutional repositories are scarce, and the situation is heterogeneous across the territory. In 1978, Woodall conjectured the following: in a planar digraph, the size of a shortest dicycle is equal to the maximum cardinality of a collection of disjoint transversals of dicycles. We prove that this conjecture is true when the underlying graph is a planar 3-tree.

4. On Tuza's Conjecture in Dense Graphs

Abstract

In 1982, Tuza conjectured that the size $\tau(G)$ of a minimum set of edges that intersects every triangle of a graph $G$ is at most twice the size $\nu(G)$ of a maximum set of edge-disjoint triangles of $G$. This conjecture was proved for several graph classes. In this paper, we present three results regarding Tuza's Conjecture for dense graphs. By using a probabilistic argument, Tuza proved its conjecture for graphs on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $\frac{7n}{8}$. We extend this technique to show that Tuza's conjecture is valid for split graphs with minimum degree at least $\frac{3n}{5}$; and that $\tau(G) < \frac{28}{15}\nu(G)$ for every tripartite graph with minimum degree more than $\frac{33n}{56}$. Finally, we show that $\tau(G)\leq \frac{3}{2}\nu(G)$ when $G$ is a complete 4-partite graph. Moreover, this bound is tight., Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure

6. Domination and packing in graphs

Abstract

Given a graph~$G$, the domination number, denoted by~$\gamma(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of a dominating set in~$G$. Dual to the notion of domination number is the packing number of a graph. A packing of~$G$ is a set of vertices whose pairwise distance is at least three. The packing number~$\rho(G)$ of~$G$ is the maximum cardinality of one such set. Furthermore, the inequality~$\rho(G) \leq \gamma(G)$ is well-known. Henning et al.\ conjectured that~$\gamma(G) \leq 2\rho(G)+1$ if~$G$ is subcubic. In this paper, we progress towards this conjecture by showing that~${\gamma(G) \leq \frac{120}{49}\rho(G)}$ if~$G$ is a bipartite cubic graph. We also show that $\gamma(G) \leq 3\rho(G)$ if~$G$ is a maximal outerplanar graph, and that~$\gamma(G) \leq 2\rho(G)$ if~$G$ is a biconvex graph. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) has revolutionized the treatment of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) due to large vessel occlusion (LVO), but its efficacy and safety in medium vessel occlusion (MeVO) remain less explored. This multicenter, retrospective study aims to investigate the incidence and clinical outcomes of vessel perforations (confirmed by extravasation during an angiographic series) during MT for AIS caused by MeVO. METHODS: Data were collected from 37 academic centers across North America, Asia, and Europe between September 2017 and July 2021. A total of 1373 AIS patients with MeVO underwent MT. Baseline characteristics, procedural details, and clinical outcomes were analyzed. RESULTS: The incidence of vessel perforation was 4.8% (66/1373). Notably, our analysis indicates variations in perforation rates across different arterial segments: 8.9% in M3 segments, 4.3% in M2 segments, and 8.3% in A2 segments (p = 0.612). Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Conflicting evidence for the association between COVID-19 and adverse perinatal outcomes exists. This study examined the associations between maternal COVID-19 during pregnancy and adverse perinatal outcomes including preterm birth (PTB), low birth weight (LBW), small-for-gestational age (SGA), large-for-gestational age (LGA) and fetal death; as well as whether the associations differ by trimester of infection. DESIGN AND SETTING: The study used a retrospective Mexican birth cohort from the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS), Mexico, between January 2020 and November 2021. PARTICIPANTS: We used the social security administrative dataset from IMSS that had COVID-19 information and linked it with the IMSS routine hospitalisation dataset, to identify deliveries in the study period with a test for SARS-CoV-2 during pregnancy. OUTCOME MEASURES: PTB, LBW, SGA, LGA and fetal death. We used targeted maximum likelihood estimators, to quantify associations (risk ratio, RR) and CIs. We fit models for the overall COVID-19 sample, and separately for those with mild or severe disease, and by trimester of infection. Additionally, we investigated potential bias induced by missing non-tested pregnancies. RESULTS: The overall sample comprised 17 340 singleton pregnancies, of which 30% tested positive. We found that those with mild COVID-19 had an RR of 0.89 (95% CI 0.80 to 0.99) for PTB and those with severe COVID-19 had an RR of 1.53 (95% CI 1.07 to 2.19) for LGA. COVID-19 in the first trimester was associated with fetal death, RR=2.36 (95% CI 1.04, 5.36). Results also demonstrate that missing non-tested pregnancies might induce bias in the associations. CONCLUSIONS: In the overall sample, there was no evidence of an association between COVID-19 and adverse perinatal outcomes. However, the findings suggest that severe COVID-19 may increase the risk of some perinatal outcomes, with the first trimester potentially being a high-risk period.

11. Artificial intelligence in social science: A study based on bibliometrics analysis

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is gradually changing the planet. Data digitisation, computing infrastructure and machine learning are helping AI tools to spread across all sectors of society. This article presents the results of a bibliometric analysis of AI-related publications in the social sciences over the last ten years (2013-2022). Most of the historical publications are taken into consideration with the aim of identifying research relevance and trends in this field. The results indicate that more than 19,408 articles have been published, 85% from 2008 to 2022, showing that research in this field is increasing significantly year on year. Clear domains or disciplines of research related to AI within the social sciences can be grouped into sub-areas such as law and legal reasoning, education, economics, and ethics. The United States is the country that publishes the most (20%), followed by China (13%). The influence of AI on society is inevitable and the advances can generate great opportunities for innovation and new jobs, but in the medium term it is necessary to adequately face this transition, setting regulations and reviewing the challenges of ethics and responsibility.

12. On two conjectures about the intersection of longest paths and cycles

Abstract

A conjecture attributed to Smith states that every pair of longest cycles in a $k$-connected graph intersect each other in at least $k$ vertices. In this paper, we show that every pair of longest cycles in a~$k$-connected graph on $n$ vertices intersect each other in at least~$\min\{n,8k-n-16\}$ vertices, which confirms Smith's conjecture when $k\geq (n+16)/7$. An analog conjecture for paths instead of cycles was stated by Hippchen. By a simple reduction, we relate both conjectures, showing that Hippchen's conjecture is valid when either $k \leq 6$ or $k \geq (n+9)/7$.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: First pass effect (FPE), achievement of complete recanalization (mTICI 2c/3) with a single pass, is a significant predictor of favorable outcomes for endovascular treatment (EVT) in large vessel occlusion stroke (LVO). However, data concerning the impact on functional outcomes and predictors of FPE in medium vessel occlusions (MeVO) are scarce. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted an international retrospective study on MeVO cases. Multivariable logistic modeling was used to establish independent predictors of FPE. Clinical and safety outcomes were compared between the two study groups (FPE vs non-FPE) using logistic regression models. Good outcome was defined as modified Rankin Scale 0-2 at 3 months. RESULTS: Eight hundred thirty-six patients with a final mTICI ⩾ 2b were included in this analysis. FPE was observed in 302 patients (36.1%). In multivariable analysis, hypertension (aOR 1.55, 95% CI 1.10-2.20) and lower baseline NIHSS score (aOR 0.95, 95% CI 0.93-0.97) were independently associated with an FPE. Good outcomes were more common in the FPE versus non-FPE group (72.8% vs 52.8%), and FPE was independently associated with favorable outcome (aOR 2.20, 95% CI 1.59-3.05). 90-day mortality and intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) were significantly lower in the FPE group, 0.43 (95% CI, 0.25-0.72) and 0.55 (95% CI, 0.39-0.77), respectively. CONCLUSION: Over 2/3 of patients with MeVOs and FPE in our cohort had a favorable outcome at 90 days. FPE is independently associated with favorable outcomes, it may reduce the risk of any intracranial hemorrhage, and 3-month mortality.

14. Role of Rho-Associated Kinase in the Pathophysiology of Cerebral Cavernous Malformations.

Abstract

Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) are vascular lesions characterized by a porous endothelium. The lack of a sufficient endothelial barrier can result in microbleeds and frank intracerebral hemorrhage. A primary mechanism for lesion development is a sequence variant in at least 1 of the 3 CCM genes (CCM1, CCM2, and CCM3), which influence various signaling pathways that lead to the CCM phenotype. A common downstream process associated with CCM gene loss of function involves overactivation of RhoA and its effector Rho-associated kinase (ROCK). In this study, we review RhoA/ROCK-related mechanisms involved in CCM pathophysiology as potential therapeutic targets. Literature searches were conducted in PubMed using combinations of search terms related to RhoA/ROCK and CCMs. In endothelial cells, CCM1, CCM2, and CCM3 proteins normally associate to form the CCM protein complex, which regulates the functions of a wide variety of protein targets (e.g., MAP3K3, SMURF1, SOK-1, and ICAP-1) that directly or indirectly increase RhoA/ROCK activity. Loss of CCM complex function and increased RhoA/ROCK activity can lead to the formation of stress fibers that contribute to endothelial junction instability. Other RhoA/ROCK-mediated pathophysiologic outcomes include a shift to a senescence-associated secretory phenotype (primarily mediated by ROCK2), which is characterized by endothelial cell migration, cell cycle arrest, extracellular matrix degradation, leukocyte chemotaxis, and inflammation. ROCK represents a potential therapeutic target, and direct (fasudil, NRL-1049) and indirect (statins) ROCK inhibitors have demonstrated various levels of efficacy in reducing lesion burden in preclinical models of CCM. Current (atorvastatin) and planned (NRL-1049) clinical studies will determine the efficacy of ROCK inhibitors for CCM in humans, for which no US Food and Drug Administration-approved or EU-approved pharmacologic treatment exists.

In 1996, Matheson and Tarjan proved that every near planar triangulation on $n$ vertices contains a dominating set of size at most $n/3$, and conjectured that this upper bound can be reduced to $n/4$ for planar triangulations when $n$ is sufficiently large. In this paper, we consider the analogous problem for independent dominating sets: What is the minimum $\epsilon$ for which every near planar triangulation on $n$ vertices contains an independent dominating set of size at most $\epsilon n$? We prove that $2/7 \leq \epsilon \leq 5/12$. Abstract

OBJECTIVE: COVID-19 would kill fewer people if health programmes can predict who is at higher risk of mortality because resources can be targeted to protect those people from infection. We predict mortality in a very large population in Mexico with machine learning using demographic variables and pre-existing conditions. DESIGN: Cohort study. SETTING: March 2020 to November 2021 in Mexico, nationally represented. PARTICIPANTS: 1.4 million laboratory-confirmed patients with COVID-19 in Mexico at or over 20 years of age. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: Analysis is performed on data from March 2020 to November 2021 and over three phases: (1) from March to October in 2020, (2) from November 2020 to March 2021 and (3) from April to November 2021. We predict mortality using an ensemble machine learning method, super learner, and independently estimate the adjusted mortality relative risk of each pre-existing condition using targeted maximum likelihood estimation. RESULTS: Super learner fit has a high predictive performance (C-statistic: 0.907), where age is the most predictive factor for mortality. After adjusting for demographic factors, renal disease, hypertension, diabetes and obesity are the most impactful pre-existing conditions. Phase analysis shows that the adjusted mortality risk decreased over time while relative risk increased for each pre-existing condition. CONCLUSIONS: While age is the most important predictor of mortality, younger individuals with hypertension, diabetes and obesity are at comparable mortality risk as individuals who are 20 years older without any of the three conditions. Our model can be continuously updated to identify individuals who should most be protected against infection as the pandemic evolves.

24. Residence Time Distribution Analysis of Aerosol Transport and Associated Healthcare Worker Exposure in a Mock Hospital Isolation Room via Computational Fluid Dynamics

Abstract

The transport of aerosol discharge in the form of a passive scalar or tracer discharged from a single cough of a patient in a ventilated mock hospital isolation room is investigated via computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Healthcare worker (HCW) exposure to the aerosol is assessed through residence time analysis of the aerosol transported through the imperfect mixing conditions in the room. Flow features responsible for imperfect mixing, including short-circuiting or channeling between the patient and exhaust air vent (which leads to rapid expulsion of aerosols from the room), dead zones or re-circulation flow regions in the room, and the turbulent diffusion or spreading of aerosol across the room, are shown to play important factors determining the HCW exposure to the aerosol. The importance of each of these factors varies depending on the ventilation rate (ACH) and the placement of the exhaust air vent relative to the patient. For example, reducing ACH from 12 to 6 diminishes the importance of these flow features and the aerosol transport may be approximately modeled through the classical perfectly mixed assumption. At ACH = 12, especially when the ceiling exhaust is placed above the patient and the HCW, short-circuiting is the dominant feature in determining HCW exposure. But when the ceiling exhaust is placed away from the patient and HCW, the short-circuiting is weakened and the influence of dead zones, which trap aerosol, and turbulent diffusion, which allow the aerosol to escape, becomes more important. It is shown that the importance of these flow features and the resulting impact on HCW exposure can be quantified in terms of residence time distribution (RTD) metrics such as mean residence time and cumulative RTD. ObjectivesWe aim to quantify shifts in hospitalisation and mortality and how those were related to the first three phases of the epidemic and individuals' demographics and health profile among those with a positive test for SARS-CoV-2 treated at the Mexican Social Security Institute's facilities from March 2020 to October 2021.DesignRetrospective observational study using interrupted time series analysis to identify changes in hospitalisation rate and case fatality rate (CFR) by epidemic wave.SettingData from the Mexican Institute of Social Security's (IMSS) Online Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance System (SINOLAVE) that include all individuals that sought care at IMSS facilities all over Mexico.ParticipantsAll individuals included in the SINOLAVE with a positive PCR or rapid test for SARS-CoV-2.Primary and secondary outcome measuresMonthly test positivity rates, hospitalisation rates, CFRs and prevalence of relevant comorbidities by age group.ResultsFrom March 2020 to October 2021, the CFR declined between 1% and 3.5%; the declines were significant for those 0-9, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 70 and older. The decline was steep during the first wave and was less steep or was temporarily reversed at the beginning of the second and third waves (changes in the trend of about 0.3% and 3.8%, and between 0.7% and 3.8%, respectively, for some age groups), but then continued to the end of the analytical period. Prevalence of diabetes, hypertension and obesity among patients testing positive also declined-two for most age groups (reductions of up to 10 percentage points for diabetes, 12 percentage points for hypertension and 19 percentage points for obesity).ConclusionData suggest that the decrease in COVID-19 fatality rate is at least partially explained by a change in the profile of those contracting the disease, that is, a falling proportion of individuals with comorbidities across all age groups.

31. Jumping over the paywall: Strategies and motivations for scholarly piracy and other alternatives

Abstract

Despite the advance of the Open Access (OA) movement, most scholarly production can only be accessed through a paywall. We conduct an international survey among researchers (N=3,304) to measure the willingness and motivations to use (or not use) scholarly piracy sites, and other alternatives to overcome a paywall such as paying with their own money, institutional loans, just reading the abstract, asking the corresponding author for a copy of the document, asking a colleague to get the document for them, or searching for an OA version of the paper. We also explore differences in terms of age, professional position, country income level, discipline, and commitment to OA. The results show that researchers most frequently look for OA versions of the documents. However, more than 50% of the participants have used a scholarly piracy site at least once. This is less common in high-income countries, and among older and better-established scholars. Regarding disciplines, such services were less used in Life & Health Sciences and Social Sciences. Those who have never used a pirate library highlighted ethical and legal objections or pointed out that they were not aware of the existence of such libraries.

Abstract

In 1981, Tuza conjectured that the cardinality of a minimum set of edges that intersects every triangle of a graph is at most twice the cardinality of a maximum set of edge-disjoint triangles. This conjecture have been proved for several important graph classes, as planar graphs, tripartite graphs, among others. However, it remains open on other important classes of graphs, as chordal graphs. Furthermore, it remains open for main subclasses of chordal graphs, as split graphs and interval graphs. In this paper, we show that Tuza's conjecture is valid for co-chain graphs with even number of vertices in both sides of the partition, a known subclass of interval graphs.

Abstract

University of California Health (UCH) provided a system-wide, rapid response to the humanitarian crisis of unaccompanied children crossing the southern U.S. border in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. In collaboration with multiple federal, state, and local agencies, UCH mobilized a multidisciplinary team to deliver acute general and specialty pediatric care to unaccompanied children at 2 Californian emergency intake sites (EISs). The response, which did not disrupt normal UCH operations, mobilized the capacities of the system and resulted in a safe and developmentally appropriate environment that supported the physical and mental health of migrant children during this traumatic period. The capacities of UCH's 6 academic health centers ensured access to trauma-informed medical care and culturally sensitive psychological and social support. Child life professionals provided access to exercise, play, and entertainment. Overall, 260 physicians, 42 residents and fellows, 4 nurse practitioners participated as treating clinicians and were supported by hundreds of staff across the 2 EISs. Over 5 months and across both EISs, a total of 4,911 children aged 3 to 17 years were cared for. A total of 782 children had COVID-19, most infected before arrival. Most children (3,931) were reunified with family or sponsors. Continuity of care after reunification or placement in a long-term shelter was enhanced by use of an electronic health record. The effort provided an educational experience for residents and fellows with instruction in immigrant health and trauma-informed care. The effort benefitted from UCH's recent experience of providing a system-wide response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lessons learned are reported to encourage the alignment and integration of academic health centers' capacities with federal, state, and local plans to better prepare for and respond to the accelerating need to care for those in the wake of disasters and humanitarian crises.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has progressed rapidly, with the emergence of new virus variants that pose challenges in treating infected individuals. In Mexico, four epidemic waves have been recorded with varying disease severity. To understand the heterogeneity in clinical presentation over time and the sensitivity and specificity of signs and symptoms in identifying COVID-19 cases, an analysis of the changes in the clinical presentation of the disease was conducted. AIM: To analyze the changes in the clinical presentation of COVID-19 among 3.38 million individuals tested for SARS-CoV-2 at the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) from March 2020 to October 2021 and evaluate the predictivity of signs and symptoms in identifying COVID-19 cases. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of clinical presentation patterns of COVID-19 among individuals treated at IMSS was performed, contrasting the signs and symptoms among SARS-CoV-2-positive individuals with those who tested negative for the virus but had respiratory infection symptoms. The sensitivity and specificity of each sign and symptom in identifying SARS-CoV-2 infection were estimated. RESULTS: The set of signs and symptoms reported for COVID-19-suspected patients treated at IMSS were not highly specific for SARS-CoV-2 positivity. The signs and symptoms exhibited variability based on age and epidemic wave. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was 0.62 when grouping the five main symptoms (headache, dyspnea, fever, arthralgia, and cough). Most of the individual symptoms had ROC values close to 0.5 (16 out of 22 between 0.48 and 0.52), indicating non-specificity. CONCLUSIONS: The results highlight the difficulty in making a clinical diagnosis of COVID-19 due to the lack of specificity of signs and symptoms. The variability of clinical presentation over time and among age groups highlights the need for further research to differentiate whether the changes are due to changes in the virus, who is becoming infected, or the population, particularly with respect to prior infection and vaccination status.

37. Attitudes, willingness, and resources to cover Article Publishing Charges (APC): the influence of age, position, income level country, discipline and open access habits

Abstract

The rise of open access (OA) publishing has been followed by the expansion of the Article Publishing Charges (APC) that moves the financial burden of scholarly journal publishing from readers to authors. We introduce the results of an international randomly selected sampled survey (N=3,422) that explores attitudes towards this pay-to-publish or Gold OA model among scholars. We test the predictor role of age, professional position, discipline, and income-level country in this regard. We found that APCs are perceived more as a global threat to Science than a deterrent to personal professional careers. Academics in low and lower-middle income level countries hold the most unfavorable opinions about the APC system. The less experimental disciplines held more negative perceptions of APC compared to STEM and the Life Sciences. Age and access to external funding stood as negative predictors of refusal to pay to publish. Commitment to OA self-archiving predicted the negative global perception of the APC. We conclude that access to external research funds influences the acceptance and the particular perception of the pay to publish model, remarking the economic dimension of the problem and warning about issues in the inequality between center and periphery.

The exponential growth of the power of modern digital computers is based upon the miniaturisation of vast nanoscale arrays of electronic switches, but this will be eventually constrained by fabrication limits and power dissipation. Chemical processes have the potential to scale beyond these limits performing computations through chemical reactions, yet the lack of well-defined programmability limits their scalability and performance. We present a hybrid digitally programmable chemical array as a probabilistic computational machine that uses chemical oscillators partitioned in interconnected cells as a computational substrate. This hybrid architecture performs efficient computation by distributing between chemical and digital domains together with error correction. The efficiency is gained by combining digital with probabilistic chemical logic based on nearest neighbour interactions and hysteresis effects. Abstract

Life and physical sciences have always been quick to adopt the latest advances in machine learning to accelerate scientific discovery. Examples of this are cell segmentation or cancer detection. Nevertheless, these exceptional results are based on mining previously created datasets to discover patterns or trends. Recent advances in AI have been demonstrated in real-time scenarios like self-driving cars or playing video games. However, these new techniques have not seen widespread adoption in life or physical sciences because experimentation can be slow. To tackle this limitation, this work aims to adapt generative learning algorithms to model scientific experiments and accelerate their discovery using in-silico simulations. We particularly focused on real-time experiments, aiming to model how they react to user inputs. To achieve this, here we present an encoder-decoder architecture based on the Transformer model to simulate real-time scientific experimentation, predict its future behaviour and manipulate it on a step-by-step basis. As a proof of concept, this architecture was trained to map a set of mechanical inputs to the oscillations generated by a chemical reaction. The model was paired with a Reinforcement Learning controller to show how the simulated chemistry can be manipulated in real-time towards user-defined behaviours. Our results demonstrate how generative learning can model real-time scientific experimentation to track how it changes through time as the user manipulates it, and how the trained models can be paired with optimisation algorithms to discover new phenomena beyond the physical limitations of lab experimentation. 47. Path eccentricity of graphs

Abstract

Let $G$ be a connected graph. The eccentricity of a path $P$, denoted by ecc$_G(P)$, is the maximum distance from $P$ to any vertex in $G$. In the \textsc{Central path} (CP) problem our aim is to find a path of minimum eccentricity. This problem was introduced by Cockayne et al., in 1981, in the study of different centrality measures on graphs. They showed that CP can be solved in linear time in trees, but it is known to be NP-hard in many classes of graphs such as chordal bipartite graphs, planar 3-connected graphs, split graphs, etc. We investigate the path eccentricity of a connected graph~$G$ as a parameter. Let pe$(G)$ denote the value of ecc$_G(P)$ for a central path $P$ of $G$. We obtain tight upper bounds for pe$(G)$ in some graph classes. We show that pe$(G) \leq 1$ on biconvex graphs and that pe$(G) \leq 2$ on bipartite convex graphs. Moreover, we design algorithms that find such a path in linear time. On the other hand, by investigating the longest paths of a graph, we obtain tight upper bounds for pe$(G)$ on general graphs and $k$-connected graphs. Finally, we study the relation between a central path and a longest path in a graph. We show that on trees, and bipartite permutation graphs, a longest path is also a central path. Furthermore, for superclasses of these graphs, we exhibit counterexamples for this property.

Abstract

The Dark Axion Portal provides a model for Dark Matter (DM) in which both Dark Photons $\gamma^\prime$ and Axions $a$ can contribute to the present day abundance of DM. We study the parameter space of the Dark Axion Portal to pinpoint regions of the parameter space where $\gamma^\prime$ and $a$ can be produced with sufficient abundance to account for the cosmic DM density, while still being detectable in planned direct detection and axion haloscope experiments. In particular, we explore the production of eV-scale Dark Photons in the Dark Axion Portal, taking into account a possible kinetic mixing between the dark and visible photons, which is essential for the detection of dark photons through absorption in direct searches. We show that a non-zero kinetic mixing does not generally spoil the phenomenology of the model, leaving both the axion and dark photon stable. Viable production mechanisms point to a sub-dominant population of dark photons making up $\lesssim 10\%$ of the DM, with the remainder consisting of axion DM. Dark photons in the mass range $m_{\gamma^\prime} \sim 20-200\,\mathrm{eV}$ and axions in the mass range $m_a \sim 30 - 400\,\mu\mathrm{eV}$ may be produced with these abundances self-consistently in the Dark Axion Portal and are within the reach of future direct searches., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures.
