Momentum exchange between a heavy quark and a hot quark-gluon medium can be characterized nonperturbatively in terms of field-strength field-strength (E-E and B-B) correlators along a Polyakov loop. These can be studied on the lattice and analytically continued. However the lattice typically determines the correlators after the application of gradient flow. We investigate how gradient flow renormalizes these correlation functions by carrying out a next-to-leading order perturbative analysis of the correlators including gradient flow. This establishes a next-to-leading order renormalization matching between the correlators as measured on the lattice and the correlators relevant for momentum diffusion., Comment: 9 pages plus technical appendices, 4 figures

The next-to-leading order weak-coupling shear viscosity of QCD was computed 6 years ago. However, these results have never been applied at finite baryon chemical potential $\mu$, even though intermediate-energy heavy ion collisions and merging neutron stars may explore the Quark-Gluon Plasma in a regime where baryon chemical potentials are large. Here, we extend the next-to-leading order shear viscosity calculations to finite $\mu$, and we show that, while the convergence of the weak-coupling expansion is questionable for achievable plasmas, it is somewhat better at $\mu > T$ than at $\mu=0$.

Consumer demand forecasting is of high importance for many e-commerce applications, including supply chain optimization, advertisement placement, and delivery speed optimization. However, reliable time series sales forecasting for e-commerce is difficult, especially during periods with many anomalies, as can often happen during pandemics, abnormal weather, or sports events. Although many time series algorithms have been applied to the task, prediction during anomalies still remains a challenge. In this work, we hypothesize that leveraging external knowledge found in world events can help overcome the challenge of prediction under anomalies. We mine a large repository of 40 years of world events and their textual representations. Further, we present a novel methodology based on transformers to construct an embedding of a day based on the relations of the day's events. Those embeddings are then used to forecast future consumer behavior. We empirically evaluate the methods over a large e-commerce products sales dataset, extracted from eBay, one of the world's largest online marketplaces. I present the simplest 3+1 dimensional quantum field theory for which the speed of sound can be arbitrarily close to the speed of light. Examining the hydrodynamics, I find cases where the shear viscosity is finite, but the "shear relaxation coefficient" appears always to be divergently large., Comment: 10 pages including figures. We analyze the color-magnetic (or "$B$") field two-point function that encodes the finite-mass correction to the heavy quark momentum diffusion coefficient. The simulations are done on fine isotropic lattices in the quenched approximation at $1.5\,T_c$, using a range of gradient flow times for noise suppression and operator renormalization. The continuum extrapolation is performed at fixed flow time followed by a second extrapolation to zero flow time. Perturbative calculations to next-to-leading order of this correlation function, matching gradient-flowed correlators to MS-bar, are used to resolve nontrivial renormalization issues. We perform a spectral reconstruction based on perturbative model fits to estimate the coefficient $\kappa_B$ of the finite-mass correction to the heavy quark momentum diffusion coefficient. The approach we present here yields high-precision data for the correlator with all renormalization issues incorporated at next-to-leading order, and is also applicable for actions with dynamical fermions., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

We present the first study of the quark mass dependence of the heavy quark momentum and spatial diffusion coefficients using lattice QCD with light dynamical quarks corresponding to a pion mass of 320 MeV. We find that, for the temperature range 195 MeV $

The equation of state of QCD matter at high densities is relevant for neutron star structure and for neutron star mergers and has been a focus of recent work. We show how lattice QCD simulations, free of sign problems, can provide an upper bound on the pressure as a function of quark chemical potentials. We show that at large chemical potentials this bound should become quite sharp; the difference between the upper bound on the pressure P-phase-quenched and the true pressure P is of order alpha^3 P. The corrections arise from a single Feynman diagram; its calculation would render remaining corrections of order alpha^4 P., Comment: 11 pages including 2 figures, plus references. We combine gradient flow, step-scaling, and finite-temperature boundary conditions to scale-set 2+1+1 flavor QCD lattices with physical HISQ quarks at multiple spacings down to a=0.01378 fm, such that they represent the same temperature at the percent level and the same quark mass to a few percent. The properties of axion miniclusters and of the voids between them can have very strong implications for the discovery of axions and the dark matter of the Universe. These properties can be strongly affected by axion dynamics in the early Universe, such as the axion string network and the non-linear dynamics around the QCD phase transition. Recently, improvements in numerical simulation techniques have allowed us to calculate the dark matter axion field from axion strings and QCD effects using different methods: directly with low-tension strings but high resolution, directly with effective high-tension strings, or indirectly by extrapolating an attractor solution. In this work, we study the properties of miniclusters in the different approaches used in the literature. We find that, while there are substantial differences in the mass distribution and internal density profiles, globally there is a similar energy distribution between minicluster halos and voids., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

The in-medium dispersion of hard partons, encoded in their so-called asymptotic mass, receives large non-perturbative contributions from classical gluons, i.e. soft gluons with large occupation numbers. Here, we discuss how the analytical properties of thermal amplitudes allow for a non-perturbative determination of the infrared classical contribution through lattice determinations in the dimensionally-reduced effective theory of hot QCD, EQCD. We show how these lattice determinations need to be complemented by perturbative two-loop matching calculations between EQCD and QCD, so that the unphysical (classical) ultraviolet behavior of EQCD is replaced by its proper quantum QCD counterpart. The leading-order weak-coupling shear viscosity of QCD was computed almost 20 years ago, and the extension to next-to-leading order is 4 years old. But these results have never been applied at finite baryon chemical potential $\mu$, despite the fact that intermediate-energy heavy ion collisions and merging neutron stars may explore the Quark-Gluon Plasma in a regime where baryon chemical potentials are large. Here we extend the leading-log shear viscosity calculation to finite $\mu$, and we argue that the convergence of the weak-coupling expansion, while questionable for achievable plasmas, should be better at $\mu > T$ than at $\mu=0$.

We calculate shear viscosity and bulk viscosity in SU(3) gauge theory on the lattice at $1.5 \,T_c$. The viscosities are extracted via a Kubo formula from the reconstructed spectral function which we determine from the Euclidean-time dependence of the corresponding channel of the energy-momentum tensor correlators. We obtain unprecedented precision for the correlators by applying gradient flow and blocking methods. The correlators are extrapolated to the continuum and then to zero flow time. To extract the viscosities we fit theoretically inspired models to the lattice data and crosscheck the fit results using the Backus Gilbert method. The final estimates for shear and bulk viscosity are $\eta/s = 0.15-0.48$ and $\zeta/s = 0.017-0.059$., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, published version

A highly adaptable and robust THz energy meter has been designed and implemented to detect energetic THz pulses from high intensity (greater than 1E18 watts per square centimeter) laser plasma interactions on OMEGA EP. THz radiation from the laser driven target is detected by a shielded pyrometer. A second identical pyrometer is used for background subtraction. The detector can be configured to detect THz pulses in the 1 mm to 30 microns (0.3 to 10 THz) range and pulse energies from joules to microjoules via changes in filtration, aperture size and position. Additional polarization selective filtration can also be used to determine THz pulse polarization. The design incorporates significant radiation and EMP shielding to survive and operate within the OMEGA EP radiation environment. We describe the design, operational principle, calibration and testing of the THz energy meter. The pyrometers were calibrated using a benchtop laser and show linear sensitivity up to 1000 nJ of absorbed energy. Initial results from four OMEGA EP THz experiments detected up to 15 microjoules at the detector, which can correspond to 100s of mJ depending on THz emission and reflection models.

We develop a new method to determine thermal activation rates, such as for bubble nucleation, topology change, \textsl{etc.}, using 4-dimensional Euclidean methods. This allows nonperturbative study on the lattice. We then investigate the strong sphaleron rate in pure-glue QCD at temperatures between 1.3 $\Tc$ and 1000 $T_\mathrm{c}$, making contact with previous results but extending them down close to the critical temperature. The extension to full QCD will be straightforward. We show that, in relativistic field theories, the thermal correlation function of N bosonic operators at sufficiently spacelike-separated points shows exponentially weak dependence on the time variables t_1,...,t_N, when the space separations are held fixed. Pretrained language models based on the transformer architecture have shown great success in NLP. Textual training data often comes from the web and is thus tagged with time-specific information, but most language models ignore this information. They are trained on the textual data alone, limiting their ability to generalize temporally. In this work, we extend the key component of the transformer architecture, i.e., the self-attention mechanism, and propose temporal attention - a time-aware self-attention mechanism. Temporal attention can be applied to any transformer model and requires the input texts to be accompanied with their relevant time points. It allows the transformer to capture this temporal information and create time-specific contextualized word representations. We leverage these representations for the task of semantic change detection; we apply our proposed mechanism to BERT and experiment on three datasets in different languages (English, German, and Latin) that also vary in time, size, and genre. We propose a method to substantially improve the signal-to-noise ratio of lattice correlation functions for bosonic operators or other operator combinations with disconnected contributions. The technique is applicable for correlations between operators on two planes (zero momentum correlators) when the dimension of the plane is larger than the separation between the two planes which are correlated. In this case, the correlation arises primarily from points whose in-plane coordinates are close, but noise arises from all pairs of points. By breaking each plane into bins and computing bin-bin correlations, it is possible to capture these short-distance correlators exactly while replacing (small) correlators at large spatial extent with a fit, with smaller uncertainty than the data. The cost is only marginally larger than averaging each plane before correlating, but the improvement in signal-to-noise can be substantial. We test the method on correlators of the gradient-flowed topological charge density and squared field strength, finding noise reductions by a factor of $\sim$ 3$-$7 compared to the conventional approach on the same ensemble of configurations., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, published version

The interaction of a jet with the medium created in heavy-ion collisions is not yet fully understood from a QCD perspective. This is mainly due to the non-perturbative nature of this interaction which affects both transverse jet momentum broadening and jet quenching. We discuss how lattice simulations of Electrostatic QCD, can be matched to full, four dimensional QCD, to determine non-perturbative contributions to the momentum broadening kernel. High-energy particles traversing a medium experience modified dispersion. In the Quark-Gluon Plasma, such dispersion affects jet propagation and transport properties and should be determined better. Above $\sim 2T_c$ we expect strongly coupled infrared behavior and perturbative ultraviolet behavior, allowing a perturbative matching to an effective theory called EQCD, which can be studied non-perturbatively. We study the relevant non-local operator in EQCD at next-to-leading order which allows for a complete EQCD-to-lattice match and prepares the groundwork for a matching between EQCD and full QCD. Our results in EQCD show remarkable agreement between perturbation theory and the lattice in the expected regime., Comment: 34 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables. In a recently published work we employ gradient flow on the lattice to extract the leading contribution of the heavy quark momentum diffusion coefficient in the heavy quark limit from calculations of a well-known two-point function of color-electric field operators. In this article we want to report the progress of calculating the recently derived color-magnetic correlator that encodes a finite mass correction to this transport coefficient. Our world is constantly evolving, and so is the content on the web. Consequently, our languages, often said to mirror the world, are dynamic in nature. However, most current contextual language models are static and cannot adapt to changes over time. In this work, we propose a temporal contextual language model called TempoBERT, which uses time as an additional context of texts. Our technique is based on modifying texts with temporal information and performing time masking - specific masking for the supplementary time information. We leverage our approach for the tasks of semantic change detection and sentence time prediction, experimenting on diverse datasets in terms of time, size, genre, and language. In a recently published work we provide a proof-of-concept of a novel method to extract the heavy quark momentum diffusion coefficient from color-electric correlators on the lattice using gradient flow. The transport coefficient can be found in the infrared limit of the corresponding spectral function which is reconstructed through perturbative model fits of the correlator data. Cosmological axions, an important dark matter candidate, are generated when a scalar field with a spontaneously broken O(2) invariance develops an explicitly O(2)-breaking tilt cosmologically, leading to coherent production of long-wavelength modes which could be dark matter. It appears that the production efficiency of this mechanism is low, despite possible production from topological structures. To understand this better, we examine production in O(N) generalizations. We supply recently obtained results from lattice EQCD with the correct UV limit to construct the collisional broadening kernel $C(b_\perp)$ in a QCD plasma. We introduce a reweighting technique which allows for a continuous sampling of temperatures in a single simulation and employ it to compute the temperature dependence of the QCD topological susceptibility at high temperatures. The method determines the ratio of susceptibility between any two temperatures within the explored temperature range. We find that the results from the method agree with our previous determination and that it is competitive with but not better than existing methods of determining the temperature derivative of the susceptibility. A significant number of event-related queries are issued in Web search. In this paper, we seek to improve retrieval performance by leveraging events and specifically target the classic task of query expansion. We propose a method to expand an event-related query by first detecting the events related to it. Then, we derive the candidates for expansion as terms semantically related to both the query and the events. To identify the candidates, we utilize a novel mechanism to simultaneously embed words and events in the same vector space. We show that our proposed method of leveraging events improves query expansion performance significantly compared with state-of-the-art methods on various newswire TREC datasets., Comment: 9 pages, WSDM 2021

We show that if dark energy evolves in time, its dynamical component could be dominated by a bath of dark radiation. Within current constraints this radiation could have up to $\sim 10^4$ times more energy density than the cosmic microwave background. We demonstrate particular models in which a rolling scalar field generates different forms of dark radiation such as hidden photons, milli-charged particles and even Standard Model neutrinos. We find the leading effect on the late-time cosmological expansion history depends on a single parameter beyond $\Lambda$CDM, namely the temperature of the dark radiation today. Cosmological observations of this modified expansion rate could provide a striking signature of this scenario. The dark radiation itself could even be directly detectable in laboratory experiments, suggesting a broader experimental program into the nature of dark energy., Comment: 12 pages, 1 Figure

We show how the sphaleron rate (the Minkowski rate for topological charge diffusion) can be determined by analytical continuation of the Euclidean topological-charge-density two-point function, which we investigate on the lattice, using gradient flow to reduce noise and provide improved operators which more accurately measure topology. We measure the correlators on large, fine lattices in the quenched approximation at $1.5\,T_c$ with high precision. Based on these data we first perform a continuum extrapolation at fixed physical flow time and then extrapolate the continuum estimates to zero flow time. The extrapolated correlators are then used to study the sphaleron rate by spectral reconstruction based on perturbatively motivated models.

Shear viscosity is a dynamical property of fluid systems close to equilibrium, describing resistance to sheared flow. After reviewing the physics of viscosity and the reason it is usually difficult to compute, I discuss its importance within the theory of QCD and the obstacles to carrying out such a computation. A diagrammatic analysis requires extensive resummations and even then convergence is poor at physically relevant couplings. Lattice approaches require a poorly controlled analytical continuation of data from the Euclidean to the Minkowski domain.
