There is growing recognition that it is important to involve youth and caregivers in the implementation of evidence-based treatments (EBTs). This study explored how youth and caregivers who received trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) in a public behavioral health system perceived the concept of EBT, their experience with treatment, their perceptions of TF-CBT, and whether their perceptions varied as a function of clinical improvement. Participants were eight youth (aged 10–17) and nine caregivers/legal guardians who received TF-CBT in community mental health centers. Semi-structured interviews were conducted post-treatment and symptoms were assessed at pre- and post-treatment. An integrated approach was used to analyze the interview data and the reliable change index was used to assess whether youth and caregivers’ impressions varied as a function of clinical improvement. Participants rarely had exposure to the term “evidence-based” and often had the misconception that evidence referred to personal experience. Youth and caregivers found the concept of receiving treatment supported by research appealing but did not like the specific term “evidence-based” and worried that treatment guided by research alone may not individualize to their needs. Personal stories were noted as a good way to market TF-CBT and the therapist emerged as an important advocate for promoting this treatment approach. Clinical improvement was associated with the perception of therapists as collaborative and with trauma narrative completion. Findings suggest that language and how therapists communicate EBTs to youth and caregivers may be important for targeted implementation strategies.

The Knowledge of Evidence-Based Services Questionnaire (KEBSQ) is an objective measure of therapist knowledge of practices derived from the evidence base for the treatment of youth psychopathology. However, the length of this measure (i.e., 40 items) and respondent demands associated with each item makes it burdensome for researchers and clinicians. This study developed and validated a Short Form of the KEBSQ using Item Response Theory (IRT) measurement models. The Short Form consists of 17 items and generates two separate scores: Correct Endorsements and Correct Rejections. The Short Form was found to correlate highly with and perform similarly to the Full Form, providing preliminary validity evidence.

This article describes the process of infusing implementation strategies in the development of a school-based drug prevention curriculum for rural Native Hawaiian youth. The curriculum (Ho‘ouna Pono) is a video-enhanced, teacher-implemented curriculum developed using a culturally grounded and community-based participatory research approach. Throughout the development of the curriculum, strategies reflective of the domains of the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) were integrated into the teacher training manual, in order to promote the implementation, adoption, and sustainability of the curriculum in rural Hawai‘i. These strategies were validated through qualitative data across two interrelated studies with community stakeholders in rural Hawai‘i. Implications for prevention, community, and educational practices are described in this article.

Little information is available on which immune cells are susceptible to BHV5 infection and how the infection may affect cell bioenergy. The aim of this study was to determine whether primary bovine monocyte-derived macrophages are susceptible to BHV5 infection and to evaluate parameters such as cell survival, virus replication and nitric oxide (NO) production. In addition, production of reactive oxygen species and mitochondrial damage were also analyzed. BHV5 infected cells underwent low rates of apoptosis but activated mitochondrial membrane depolarization and complex I. Additionally, production of high NO levels upon monocyte derived-macrophage infection did not interfere with the production of progeny virus. Overall, our findings revealed that primary cultures of bovine monocyte-derived macrophages support BHV5 replication in vitro and that mitochondrial dysfunction induced by infection apparently does not interfere with virus replication. Conceptual models of implementation posit contextual factors and their associations with evidence-based practice (EBP) use at multiple levels and suggest these factors exhibit complex cross-level interactions. Little empirical work has examined these interactions, which is critical to advancing causal implementation theory and optimizing implementation strategy design. Mixed effects regression examined cross-level interactions between clinician (knowledge, attitudes) and organizational characteristics (culture, climate) to predict cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic therapy use with youth (N = 247 clinicians across 28 agencies). Results indicated several interactions, highlighting the importance of attending to interactions between variables at multiple levels to advance multilevel implementation theory and strategies.

Over the past several years, youth treatment research has moved toward understanding the dissemination and implementation of evidence-based practices (EBPs). As a result, studies have focused on identifying predictors that aid in successful adoption and sustainment of EBPs. Theories of behavior change posit that therapist knowledge and attitudes play a fundamental role in EBP adoption; however, studies have produced mixed findings, which may be an artifact of broad definitions of both EBP knowledge and EBP itself. The current study was an examination of 46 youth community therapists and the extent to which varying types of knowledge and attitudes as well as youth characteristics predicted specific practices derived from the evidence-base. Results suggested that specific EBP knowledge predicted specific practices, highlighting the need for more specificity when examining predictors of EBP use. Therapists' attitudes, demographic characteristics, and youth characteristics were also significant predictors of EBP use. Future research should consider examining discrete and specific practices to better understand and predict therapists' future behavior.

Research to date on child and adolescent anxiety and depression have focused predominantly on major ethnic groups. Very few studies to date have been conducted on specific ethnic minority groups and the relatively few studies on these ethnic minority samples have produced mixed findings. The following question therefore still remains: Do specific ethnic subgroups differ with respect to their expression of anxiety and depression? And do these differences differ as a function of reporter type (i.e., youth versus parent)? If the expression of internalizing symptoms differs across specific ethnic subgroups, these differences could inform approaches to assessing and treating these populations. In the current study, we therefore examined ethnic differences in anxiety and depression symptoms in ethnic subgroups. A total of 629 children and adolescents from various public and private schools, aged 8–18 years (M = 12.37, SD = 2.8) and their caregivers completed anxiety and depression scales. Multiple indicators, multiple causes confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the following specific ethic subgroups were associated with significantly greater anxiety and depression relative to Caucasian youth: Chinese American, Filipino American, Japanese American, and Native Hawaiian. These results were found only among parent (but not youth) reports. Age and low SES status was also associated with more internalizing problems among Chinese, Filipino, and Japanese American youth. Implications related to ethnic minority subgroup differences and the role of multi-informant reports in understanding the relationship between anxiety, depression and ethnic minority subgroups are discussed.

Although significant progress has been made in the identification of youth evidence-based practices, the adoption of these interventions into community-based mental health care remains limited. Dissemination and implementation (DI) research has the potential to bridge this science-practice gap in clinical psychology. The theory of planned behavior (TPB) offers a useful conceptualization of individual behavior change including behavioral intention as defined by attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. To facilitate application of this model to DI efforts, the current study explores perspectives about using evidence-based practice from stakeholders in the field of youth mental health (including clinical supervisors, case managers, administrators at the departments of health and education, and direct service providers in clinic-based, school-based, and intensive in-home settings) within the TPB framework. A set of instrument items was created from this rich qualitative data using a rigorous mixed-method content validation approach. Instrument items are provided for future use in DI research.

Reports on the behavioral health workforce highlight the need to enhance evidence-based capacity; evidence-based interventions incorporated into pre-service graduate curricula (coursework and fieldwork) are needed to meet this goal. Improving educational practices across pre-service settings will require understanding of and careful attention to the contextual factors that exert pressure on curricula. The authors believe efforts to change educational practices can be enhanced by application of implementation science principles. This Open Forum delineates the key contextual factors that influence pre-service education, highlights gaps in the literature, and proposes an agenda for future research at the intersection of behavioral health workforce development and implementation science.

Increasing evidence-based practice (EBP) use in community mental health is a national priority, especially given that one in five youth will suffer from mental health concerns before adulthood. Implementation science offers a unique lens for understanding EBP use that identifies barriers and facilitators of successful adoption. Consumer engagement is often overlooked as an EBP implementation strategy. In this article, we describe the State of Hawai‘i Child and Adolescent Mental Health Division's innovative effort to target consumer EBP demand via the Help Your Keiki Website. Feedback from community stakeholders and website analytics converge to suggest that the most helpful content is related to finding help, normalizing concerns, and questions to ask therapists. Future outreach efforts as well as ongoing improvement and enhancement of the website are discussed.

Examining therapist evidence-based practice (EBP) knowledge seems an important step for supporting successful implementation. Advances in implementation science suggest a distinction between practice specific (i.e., knowing which practices are derived from the evidence base) and EBP process (i.e., integrating research evidence, clinical experience, client characteristics, and monitoring outcomes) knowledge. An examination of how these knowledge types are measured and relate to attitudes appears warranted. In our sample of 58 youth community therapists, both practice specific and EBP process knowledge accounted for EBP attitude scores, which varied by therapist demographic variables. Implications for measurement of therapist constructs and future research in identifying therapist predictors of EBP use and youth clinical improvement are discussed.

Efinaconazole is a new triazole antifungal for topical treatment of onychomycosis. The reproductive and developmental toxicity of efinaconazole was characterized in fertility and early embryonic development (rat), embryo-fetal development (rat and rabbit), and peri/post-natal development (rat) studies in accordance with current ICH guidances. In the fertility study, maternal reproductive toxicity was noted as estrous cycle prolongation (NOAEL = 5 mg/kg/day) but there were no male reproductive effects even in the presence of paternal toxicity (NOAEL = 25 mg/kg/day). Rat embryo-fetal and perinatal pup lethality was the most sensitive (NOAEL = 5 mg/kg/day) efinaconazole developmental toxicity and was noted at maternally toxic doses. Efinaconazole did not affect rabbit embryo-fetal development at maternally toxic doses (NOAEL = 10 mg/kg/day). No malformations were induced by efinaconazole in rats or rabbits. When compared with systemic exposures observed in onychomycosis patients, embryo-fetal toxicity in rats was noted at high (>100-fold) multiples of systemic exposure.

We have measured a complete set of deuteron analyzing powers in deuteron–proton elastic scattering at 190, 250, and 294 MeV/nucleon. The obtained data are compared with the Faddeev calculations based on the modern nucleon–nucleon forces together with the Tucson-Melbourne’99, and UrbanaIX three nucleon forces. The data are also presented with the calculations based on the N4LO NN potentials of the chiral effective field theory.

Exposure therapy is recognized as the key component of cognitive-behavioral treatment for anxiety. However, exposure is the least used evidence-based treatment in community mental health settings and is the most challenging technique for clinicians to adopt within the context of effectiveness and implementation trials. Little work has examined clinician and organizational characteristics that predict use of exposure, which is important for identifying implementation strategies that may increase its use. In a large sample of community health clinicians (N = 335) across 31 clinical practice sites, this study characterized clinician and organizational predictors of exposure use and relaxation for anxiety. Mixed effects regression analyses indicated that both clinician attitudes and an organization’s implementation climate may be important levers for interventions seeking to increase clinician exposure use. Greater clinician use of relaxation strategies was also associated with less exposure use. Results point to important implications for implementing cognitive-behavioral therapy for anxiety, including de-emphasizing relaxation and attending to organizational climate.

The purpose of this small pilot study was three-fold: (a) to begin development of a coding scheme for supervisor and therapist skill acquisition, (b) to preliminarily investigate a pilot train-the-trainer paradigm for skill development, and (c) to evaluate self-reported versus observed indicators of skill mastery in that pilot program. Participants included four supervisor–therapist dyads ( N = 8) working with public mental health sector youth. Master trainers taught cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques to supervisors, who in turn trained therapists on these techniques. Supervisor and therapist skill acquisition and supervisor use of teaching strategies were repeatedly assessed through coding of scripted role-plays with a multiple-baseline across participants and behaviors design. The coding system, the Practice Element Train the Trainer – Supervisor/Therapist Versions of the Therapy Process Observational Coding System for Child Psychotherapy, was developed and evaluated though the course of the investigation. The coding scheme demonstrated excellent reliability (ICCs [1,2] = 0.81–0.91) across 168 video recordings. As calculated through within-subject effect sizes, supervisor and therapist participants, respectively, evidenced skill improvements related to teaching and performing therapy techniques. Self-reported indicators of skill mastery were inflated in comparison to observed skill mastery. Findings lend initial support for further developing an evaluative approach for a train-the-trainer effort focused on disseminating evidence-based practices.

Recent developments for disseminating and implementing evidence-based practices (EBPs) have emphasized the importance of increasing therapists' knowledge of such techniques. However, systematic efforts to measure knowledge in therapists serving youth have mostly relied on poorly researched study-specific measures. This study investigated the structure of EBP knowledge in a large sample of youth community therapists (N = 240) via a therapist report instrument emphasizing therapeutic commonalities across various types of treatment approaches. Findings supported a three-factor structure of knowledge with scores on factors varying by therapists' primary practice setting and education level. The relationships between therapist knowledge of and attitudes towards EBPs are also discussed.

We have measured the 16O(p, d) reaction using 198-, 295- and 392-MeV proton beams to search for a direct evidence on an effect of the tensor interactions in light nucleus. Differential cross sections of the one-neutron transfer reaction populating the ground states and several low-lying excited states in 15O were measured. Comparing the ratios of the cross sections for each excited state to the one for the ground state over a wide range of momentum transfer, we found a marked enhancement of the ratio for the positive-parity state(s). The observation is consistent with large components of high-momentum neutrons in the initial ground-state configurations due to the tensor interactions.

Objective: Veterans evaluated at the WRIISC present with multiple and chronic health conditions such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), pain, and fatigue. These patients often experience poor symptom relief. A pilot project was designed to determine whether such veterans would practice yoga as an adjunct to conventional medical care. We also used a range of standard screening measures to examine the health profile of individuals. Methods: Veterans were referred by VA clinicians to a WRIISC yoga clinic established in 2009. Two classes were offered per week. Veterans were assessed at baseline and after 12 classes with the PTSD Ch ecklist (PCL), Short F orm McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-12), and the Flinders Fatigue Scale (FFS). Results: There have been 293 patient referrals so far and more than 1,824 yoga contact hours. Detailed data were collected on 10 veterans age 53–85 yrs (6 males). The screening instruments revealed nonsignificant benefits of yoga across the classes (p > .05). Furthermore, the PCL scores showed that four patients (40%) screened positive for PTSD (mean severity score = 40.9, range = 18–70). In addition, the PCL showed positive correlations with measures of pain (FS-12; Spearman’s rho = .76, p < .01), and chronic fatigue (FFS; Spearman’s rho = .94, p < .001). Similar results were found for equivalent correlations after 12 yoga classes. Conclusion: This pilot study demonstrates that veterans accept yoga as a complementary treatment to their regular medical care. Of possible significance is the observation that 40% of the patients screened positive for PTSD. The reasons for this are not clear but may be because such patients were referred at a higher rate. It is also possible that PTSD patients seek out yoga classes as an effective means of treating their symptoms. The strong correlations between measures of PTSD, pain, and fatigue suggest far-reaching implications for the integration of yoga in the treatment of veterans with a broad array of disorders exacerbated by stress. 2. Yoga-based Psychotherapy Group With Urban Youth Exposed to Trauma

A high-resolution ($^{3}\mathrm{He},t$) charge-exchange experiment at an incident energy of 420 MeV has been performed on the double beta ($\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\beta}$) decay nucleus $^{82}\mathrm{Se}$. A detailed Gamow-Teller (${\mathrm{GT}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$) strength distribution in $^{82}\mathrm{Br}$ has been extracted, which provides information to the $\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay nuclear matrix elements. Three strong and isolated transitions, which are to the 75, 1484 and the 2087 keV states in $^{82}\mathrm{Br}$, are found to dominate the low-excitation region below $\ensuremath{\approx}2.1$ MeV. Above 2.1 MeV a sudden onset of a strong GT fragmentation is observed. The degree of fragmentation resembles a situation found in the neighboring $A=76$ system $^{76}\mathrm{Ge}$, whereas the observed concentration of strength in the three low-lying states is reminiscent of the heavier neighbors $^{96}\mathrm{Zr}$ and $^{100}\mathrm{Mo}$. The strong GT transition to the 75 keV $({1}^{+})$ state makes $^{82}\mathrm{Se}$ interesting for solar neutrino detection. The $^{82}\mathrm{Se}({\ensuremath{\nu}}_{e},{e}^{\ensuremath{-}})^{82}\mathrm{Br}$ solar neutrino capture rate in a nonoscillation scenario is therefore evaluated to $668\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}12\text{(stat)}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}60\text{(sys)}$ SNU, and some of the advantages of using selenium for solar neutrino studies are discussed.

Despite the accumulated research support for the use of evidence-based practices (EBPs) with youth, these treatment approaches remain underutilized in community settings. Therapist attitudes towards EBPs play a pivotal role in their adoption and implementation of these practices. The present investigation employs joint exploratory factor analysis to evaluate the structure of two measures of therapist attitudes, the Evidence-Based Practices Attitudes Scale and the Modified Practice Attitude Scale. Results suggest three factors including (a) importance of clinical experience over EBPs, (b) clinician openness to change, and (c) problems with EBPs. Recommendations are provided for future evaluation of therapist attitudes and associated characteristics.

The unbound O12 nucleus was studied via the two-neutron transfer (p,t) reaction in inverse kinematics using a radioactive O14 beam at 51 MeV/u. Excitation energy spectra and differential cross sections were deduced by the missing mass method using MUST2 telescopes. We achieved much higher statistics compared to the previous experiments of O12, which allowed accurate determination of resonance energy and unambiguous spin and parity assignment. The O12 resonance previously reported using the same reaction was confirmed at an excitation energy of 1.62±0.03(stat.)±0.10(syst.). MeV and assigned spin and parity of 0+ from a distorted-wave Born approximation analysis of the differential cross sections. Mirror symmetry of O12 with respect to its neutron-rich partner Be12 is discussed from the energy difference of the second 0+ states. In addition, from systematics of known 0+ states, a distinct correlation is revealed between the mirror energy difference and the binding energy after carrying out a scaling with the mass and the charge. We show that the mirror energy difference of the observed 0+ state of O12 is highly deviated from the systematic trend of deeply bound nuclei and in line with the scaling relation found for weakly bound nuclei with a substantial 2s1/2 component. The importance of the scaling of mirror asymmetry is discussed in the context of ab initio calculations near the drip lines and universality of few-body quantum systems.

Cross sections of pd breakup reaction at E p = 250 MeV were measured systematically in single-proton detection and in two-proton coincidence detection. Measured cross section is up to two times higher than calculated ones. The enhancement of breakup cross section is similar to reported enhancement in pd elastic scattering cross section. Origins of this enhancement are discussed.

A 71Ga(3He, t)71Ge charge-exchange experiment was performed to extract with high precision the Gamow–Teller (GT) transition strengths to the three lowest-lying states in 71Ge, i.e., the ground state ( 1 / 2 − ) , the 175 keV ( 5 / 2 − ) and the 500 keV ( 3 / 2 − ) excited states. These are the relevant states, which are populated via a charged-current reaction induced by neutrinos from reactor-produced 51Cr and 37Ar sources. A precise measurement of the GT transition strengths is an important input into the calibration of the SAGE and GALLEX solar neutrino detectors and addresses a long-standing discrepancy between the measured and evaluated capture rates from the 51Cr and 37Ar neutrino calibration sources, which has recently spawned new ideas about unconventional neutrino properties.

[Clin Psychol Sci Prac 18: 154–172, 2011] This updated review of evidence-based treatments follows the original review performed by the Hawaii Task Force. Over 750 treatment protocols from 435 studies were coded and rated on a 5-level strength of evidence system. Results showed large numbers of evidence-based treatments applicable to anxiety, attention, autism, depression, disruptive behavior, eating problems, substance use, and traumatic stress. Treatments were reviewed in terms of diversity of client characteristics, treatment settings and formats, therapist characteristics, and other variables potentially related to feasibility and generalizability. Overall, the literature has expanded considerably since the previous review, yielding a growing list of options and information available to guide decisions about treatment selection.

We investigated the feeding habits and grazing rates of the ontogenetically migrating copepods in the Oyashio region to evaluate their grazing impacts on the food web during the spring phytoplankton bloom. The bloom was in progress from early to late April, although chlorophyll a concentrations fluctuated considerably with the frequent exchange of different water masses. Biomass of the copepod community reached a maximum in mid-April when late copepodites of Neocalanus cristatus , Neocalanus flemingeri and Eucalanus bungii contributed to the biomass increase. Gut pigment contents of the predominant copepods were much higher during the bloom compared with the levels in March (pre-bloom). The temporal fluctuations were not correlated with those of mean chlorophyll a concentrations in the 0–50 m layer. Feeding experiments indicated that major food items for the copepods were centric diatoms and flagellates. During the period of lower ambient chlorophyll, the copepods changed their heterotrophic prey from naked ciliates to tintinnids. Apparent clearance rates were positive for naked ciliates and negative for heterotrophic nanoplankton, Cryptophyceae and bacteria when chlorophyll was high, suggesting trophic cascade effects from copepod feeding even during the phytoplankton bloom. The carbon demands of the copepod community were estimated to be 156 mgC m −2 day −1 in early March to 797 mgC m −2 day −1 in mid-April. The grazing rates on phytoplankton reached 480 mgC m −2 day −1 , equivalent to as much as 28% of primary production. Non-phytoplankton prey supported 40 to 71% of the copepod carbon requirement. These results suggest that the copepod community does not graze the phytoplankton bloom down, but it does have significant impacts on microbial food webs.
