In this work, we evaluate the status of both theory and empirical evidence in the field of experimental rest-break research based on a framework that combines mental-chronometry and psychometric-measurement theory. To this end, we (1) provide a taxonomy of rest breaks according to which empirical studies can be classified (e.g., by differentiating between long, short, and micro-rest breaks based on context and temporal properties). Then, we (2) evaluate the theorizing in both the basic and applied fields of research and explain how popular concepts (e.g., ego depletion model, opportunity cost theory, attention restoration theory, action readiness, etc.) relate to each other in contemporary theoretical debates. Here, we highlight differences between all these models in the light of two symbolic categories, termed the resource-based and satiation-based model, including aspects related to the dynamics and the control (strategic or non-strategic) mechanisms at work. Based on a critical assessment of existing methodological and theoretical approaches, we finally (3) provide a set of guidelines for both theory building and future empirical approaches to the experimental study of rest breaks. We conclude that a psychometrically advanced and theoretically focused research of rest and recovery has the potential to finally provide a sound scientific basis to eventually mitigate the adverse effects of ever increasing task demands on performance and well-being in a multitasking world at work and leisure.

Eye-related movements such as blinks and microsaccades are modulated during bistable perceptual tasks. However, if they play an active role during internal perceptual switches is not known. We conducted two experiments involving an ambiguous plaid stimulus, wherein participants were asked to continuously report their percept, which could consist of either unidirectional coherent or bidirectional component movement. Our main results show that blinks and microsaccades did not facilitate perceptual switches. On the contrary, a reduction in eye movements preceded the perceptual switch. Blanks, on the other hand, thought to mimic the retinal consequences of a blink, consistently led to a switch. Through the timing of the blank-introduced perceptual change, we were able to estimate the delay between the internal switch and the response. This delay further allowed us to evaluate that the reduction in blink probability co-occurred with the internal perceptual switch. Additionally, our results indicate that distinct internal processes underlie the switch to coherent vs. component percept. Blanks exclusively facilitated a switch to the coherent percept, and only the switch to coherent percept was followed by an increase in blink rate. In a second study, we largely replicated the findings and included a microsaccade analysis. Microsaccades only showed a weak relation with perceptual switches, but their direction was correlated with the perceived motion direction. Nevertheless, our data suggests an interaction between microsaccades and blinks by showing that microsaccades were differently modulated around blinks compared with blanks. This study shows that a reduction in eye movements precedes internal perceptual switches indicating that the rate of blinks can set the stage for a reinterpretation of sensory input. While a perceptual switch based on changed sensory input usually leads to an increase in blink rate, such an increase was only present after the perceptual switch to coherent motion but absent after the switch to component percept. This provides evidence of different underlying mechanism or internal consequence of the two perceptual switches and suggests that blinks can uncover differences in internal percept-related processes that are not evident from the percept itself.

Since perceiving objects around us happens so fast and effortlessly it is hard to conceive the complexity of the processes underlying perception. One domain which has been investigated extensively in the past with respect to percept is the visual system with a special focus on motion perception. This thesis investigates the relationship between brain activity and visual motion perception in humans and following questions have been tried to answer using magnetoencephalography (MEG) as well as psychophysical approaches: i) Single cell responses in monkey middle temporal area correlate positively with motion coherence. Can the same dependency be found in its human homolog using MEG? ii) Coherence dependent modulation might depict the ability of the cortex to differentiate between signal (coherent motion) and noise (incoherent motion) thereby providing an indicator for the accuracy of percept. Is a perceptual improvement due to attention paralleled by an increased strength of coherence dependent response modulation? Patients with cerebellar lesions show visual motion perception deficits. Is this deficit paralleled by a decreased motion coherence dependent modulation of cortical activity? Does neuromagnetic activity modulated by coherence differ between correctly vs. incorrectly answered trials for a given coherence level? iii) Is the same network underlying perception of real motion also involved if illusionary motion is perceived? In order to investigate these questions six studies were conducted including healthy subjects as well as cerebellar patients whose ongoing brain activity was recorded using MEG. Visual stimulation was composed of a random dot kinematogram whose strength was systematically varied by the percentage of coherently moving dot elements (motion coherence). The coherence thresholds at which 75% correct answers were achieved with respect to the global motion direction were further used as measure of the perceptual performance. In order to investigate illusionary motion perception a motion adaptation paradigm was used referred to as motion after effect (MAE). Spectrally unspecific magnetic field activity showed a linear increase with motion coherence and could be attributed to visual occipito-temporal cortex including human area MT+ (middle temporal). The strength of this coherence modulation as well as its peak latency correlated with the perceptual ability as could be shown by including patients with perceptual deficits as found after cerebellar lesions. Additionally, oscillatory components in three separate frequency bands were found to be associated with successful motion perception. An increase in amplitude with rising motion coherence was found for low frequency oscillations (~3 Hz, delta) picked up by occipito-temporal sensors. The strength of coherence dependent modulation of this oscillatory component paralleled the perceptual improvement due to focused attention. Also incorrect compared to correct trials within one coherence level showed a change in delta amplitude. Secondly, the amplitude of oscillations within the gamma band (63 +/- 5 Hz) was shown to be locked to the phase of an ongoing 3 Hz oscillation. If the stimulus was perceived correctly this cross-frequency coupling proved strengthened. Third, oscillation in the alpha band (10 +/-3 Hz) showed an inverse dependence on motion coherence within early visual cortex i.e. a decrease in alpha amplitude with increasing motion coherence as well as an increase in alpha amplitude for incorrect trials. This effect emerged after coherent motion offset suggesting that, rather than reflecting a percept related process, occipital alpha activity represents an active inhibitory gating mechanism protecting visual motion integration in later cortical areas from disturbing upcoming signals. Last but not least it could be shown that even though responses in area MT+ are associated with the processing of coherent motion as well as the motion after effect, the percept of real and illusionary motion seem to be generated by mostly independent processes since e.g. the changed perception of illusionary motion in cerebellar patients was not correlated with their impairment to perceive real motion. In summary, results obtained by experiments conducted in the framework of this thesis indicate that conform to signal detection theory activity modulated by motion coherence (and therefore associated with the inputs’ signal to noise ratio) is linked to the ability to correctly perceive motion direction. Results for specific frequencies further support the concept that not only response strength might influence the effectiveness of signal processing but also the accurate temporal relation between sensory input and cortical states as well as between ongoing cortical processes. Oscillatory activity seems to play a major role in the underlying mechanism of temporal coding. Ein Bereich der mit Hinblick auf Wahrnehmung intensiv erforscht wurde ist das visuelle System, speziell das Bewegungssehen. Die vorliegende Doktorarbeit untersucht die Beziehung zwischen Gehirnaktivität und Bewegungssehen beim Menschen. Die folgenden Fragen wurden mit Hilfe von Magnetoenzephalographie (MEG) sowie psychophysischen Untersuchungsmethoden bearbeitet. i) Einzelzellantworten, abgeleitet im medio-temporalen Areal von Affen, korrelieren positiv mit visueller Bewegungskohärenz. Kann eine kohärenzabhängige Modulation kortikaler Aktivierung mit Hilfe des MEGs auch beim Menschen nachgewiesen werden? ii) Eine Veränderung der Gehirnaktivierung in Abhängigkeit der dargebotenen Bewegungskohärenz könnte die Fähigkeit des Kortex widerspiegeln zwischen Signal (kohärente Bewegung) und Rauschen (inkohärente Bewegung) zu unterscheiden und somit ein Maß für das Wahrnehmungsvermögen darstellen. Findet eine aufmerksamkeitsbedingte Verbesserung der Wahrnehmung seine Entsprechung in einer Erhöhung der kohärenzabhängigen Modulation kortikaler Aktivierung? Geht ein Bewegungssehdefizit, wie es für Patienten mit Kleinhirnlesionen beschrieben ist, mit einer Verkleinerung der kohärenzabhängigen Modulation einher? Unterscheidet sich kohärenzabhängige Gehirnaktivität für korrekt und inkorrekt beantwortete Durchgänge innerhalb einer Kohärenzstufe? iii) Basiert die Wahrnehmung echter und illusionärer Bewegung auf denselben Mechanismen? Um diesen Fragen nachzugehen wurden sechs Untersuchungen an gesunden Probanden sowie Kleinhirnpatienten durchgeführt deren Gehirnaktivität mit Hilfe von MEG erfasst wurde. Visuelle Stimulation bestand aus randomisiert angeordneten Punkten die sich zu einem systematisch variierten Prozentsatz kohärent bewegten (Bewegungskohärenz). Die Kohärenzschwellen bei der 75% korrekte Antworten, die globale Bewegungsrichtung betreffend, erzielt wurden war Maß für die Wahrnehmungsleistung. Illusionäre Bewegungswahrnehmung wurde durch Richtungsadaptation erzielt (=Bewegungsnacheffekt). Magentische Feldaktivierung unabhängig von ihrem spektralen Gehalt zeigte eine lineare Erhöhung mit steigender Bewegungskohärenz über dem visuellen temporo-okzipitalen Kortex. Die Stärke und Latenz dieser kohärenzabhängigen Modulierung korrelierten mit der Wahrnehmungsfähigkeit. Kleinhirnpatienten mit perzeptuellen Defiziten wiesen eine erniedrigte Modulation auf. Zusätzlich konnte für Oszillationen in drei verschiedenen Frequenzbändern eine Verbindung mit erfolgreicher Wahrnehmung gezeigt werden: In temporo-okzipitalen Sensoren wurde eine positive Korrelation zwischen der Amplitude niedrigfrequenter Schwingungen (~3Hz, Delta) und Bewegungskohärenz gefunden deren Stärke die perzeptuelle Verbesserung widerspiegelte die durch selektive Aufmerksamkeit ausgelöst worden war. Auch korrekt beantwortete Durchgänge wiesen, verglichen mit inkorrekten Antworten, veränderte Delta Amplituden auf. Zweitens wurde eine Kopplung zwischen der Amplitude von Oszillationen im Gamma-band (63+/-5Hz) und der Phase anhaltender 3Hz Oszillation beobachtet. Wurde der Stimulus korrekt wahrgenommen war diese Frequenzkopplung verstärkt. Drittens zeigten Oszillationen im Alpha-band (10+/-3Hz) eine negative Korrelation mit Bewegungskohärenz im frühen visuellen Kortex sowie eine Erhöhung der Alpha Amplitude für inkorrekte Durchgänge jedoch erst nach Abschluss der Bewegungspräsentation. Okzipitale Alpha Aktivierung scheint somit nicht Wahrnehmungsprozesse an sich sondern einen aktiven Inhibitionsprozess zu reflektieren, der visuelle Bewegungsverarbeitung über eine Art Schleusenfunktion vor störendem, nachkommendem Input schützt. Nicht zuletzt konnte gezeigt werden, dass obwohl Aktivierung in extrastriaten Arealen sowohl mit der Verarbeitung kohärenter Bewegung als auch mit dem Bewegungsnacheffekt assoziiert ist, der Wahrnehmung von realer und illusionärer Bewegung zumindest teilweise unabhängige Prozesse unterliegen. So korrelierte z.B. die veränderte Bewegungswahrnehmung in Kleinhirnpatienten nicht mit einer Veränderung des Bewegungsnacheffekts. Die Ergebnisse der im Rahmen dieser Doktorarbeit durchgeführten Experimente legen in Übereinstimmung mit der Signaltheorie nahe, dass durch Bewegungskohärenz modulierte (und so mit dem Signal zu Rauschen Verhältnis des Inputs assoziierte) Aktivität mit der Fähigkeit Bewegungsrichtungen in einer verrauschten Darstellung wahrzunehmen verbunden ist. Ergebnisse, die sich auf spezifische Frequenzbänder beschränken, unterstützen ein Konzept das nicht nur der neuronalen Antwortstärke Relevanz in der Effektivität der Signalverarbeitung zuschreibt sondern auch der genauen zeitlichen Beziehung zwischen sensorischem Input und kortikalen Zuständen sowie zwischen laufenden kortikalen Prozessen. Oszillationen scheint eine große Bedeutung innerhalb dieser zeitbezogenen Vorgänge zuzukommen.
