Abstract

The Danish SEQUEL cohort is a study that aims to investigate the inequalities and late effects experienced by cancer survivors in Denmark. The cohort includes adult survivors of breast, prostate, lung, colon and rectum cancer, melanoma, and lymphoma. It provides comprehensive data on tumor characteristics, cancer treatment, educational level, income, cohabitation, comorbidity, and more. The study has found that cancer survivors, especially those with lower education levels, have a greater need for healthcare services and experience impaired functioning and severe symptoms. The data from the cohort is not publicly available, but researchers can contact the principal investigator for collaborative research projects. Abstract

Benign skin tumours are commonly seen by general practitioners. They are important to differentiate from skin malignancies. Most benign skin lesions are diagnosed based on the history and clinical features. However, if the clinical diagnosis is uncertain, a skin biopsy, e.g. excisional or punch for histopathological examination is necessary to rule out malignancy. Seborrheic keratoses are the most common benign skin tumours with an increasing incidence with age. Other common benign skin lesions include melanocytic naevi, acrochordons and dermatofibromas, which may resemble malignant neoplasms. Benign skin tumours are commonly seen by general practitioners. Abstract

The Goldilocks mastectomy was first described in 2012 as a third option for patients who are not eligible for or want traditional modes of breast reconstruction. The technique involves performing a skin-sparing mastectomy using Wise pattern incisions and creating a breast mound from the residual lower mastectomy flap. In this case report, we present a 58-year old woman with breast cancer who was not eligible for traditional breast reconstruction, and instead an uncomplicated Goldilocks mastectomy was performed.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The primary purpose of reconstructive and cosmetic breast surgery is to improve patients' quality of life, and patient-reported outcome measurements are important in outcome assessment of breast surgery. The BREAST-Q questionnaire measures changes in quality of life and patient satisfaction in patients undergoing breast surgery. The aim of this work was to translate and linguistically validate all BREAST-Q modules for use in Denmark.METHODS: The Danish version of the BREAST-Q was developed through forward translation, back translation and cognitive debriefing following the guidelines from the MAPI Research Trust Foundation and approved by the developers. The aim was to achieve a conceptually equivalent Danish version using colloquial language rather than undertaking a simple literal translation.RESULTS: A conceptually equivalent Danish version of all five BREAST-Q modules was achieved. The cognitive debriefing revealed good content validity. A cultural difference regarding the Satisfaction with Office Staff Scale was discovered.CONCLUSIONS: The BREAST-Q can now be used for patients undergoing breast surgery in Denmark to measure change in quality of life and patient satisfaction as part of the outcome assessment. The BREAST-Q may be used for both individual and group measurements in clinical and research settings alike. Data collection with BREAST-Q can provide valuable information for use in clinical counseling of women undergoing breast surgery. A psychometric validation of the Danish version of the BREAST-Q is currently underway.FUNDING: none.TRIAL REGISTRATION: not relevant.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Indication for breast reduction in a publically funded or an insurance-funded setting depends on the severity of the subjective symptoms and on the clinical evaluation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether Danish surgeons follow a clinical practice recommending a minimum tissue resection weight of 400-500 g per breast.METHODS: Included in the study were a total of 366 female patients with breast hypertrophy who underwent bilateral breast reduction surgery at three large university hospitals in Denmark in the period from August 2008 to November 2013. The patients' height, weight and standard breast measurement were registered as was the weight of breast tissue resection. The preoperative breast volume was measured using transparent plastic cups designed for this purpose.RESULTS: Among the 366 female participants, the median age was 40 years, the median BMI was 24 kg/m2, and the median breast volume was 1,050 cc on each side. Only 201 (55%) cases met the resection criterion of a minimum of 400 g tissue per breast, and 130 (36%) had 500 g or more resected. We found a highly significant correlation between the amount of resected breast tissue and the preoperative breast volume (p < 0.001, n = 366).CONCLUSIONS: Many surgeons did not follow the clinical practice of resecting 400-500 g of breast tissue in women who underwent breast reduction surgery at three large hospitals in Denmark in the 2008-2013 period. Our findings are surprising and beg the question if the guidelines should be revised to reflect the current practice or vice versa.FUNDING: none.TRIAL REGISTRATION: not relevant.
