1. Ultra-high-resolution observations of persistent null-point reconnection in the solar corona

Abstract

Abstract Magnetic reconnection is a key mechanism involved in solar eruptions and is also a prime possibility to heat the low corona to millions of degrees. Here, we present ultra-high-resolution extreme ultraviolet observations of persistent null-point reconnection in the corona at a scale of about 390 km over one hour observations of the Extreme-Ultraviolet Imager on board Solar Orbiter spacecraft. The observations show formation of a null-point configuration above a minor positive polarity embedded within a region of dominant negative polarity near a sunspot. The gentle phase of the persistent null-point reconnection is evidenced by sustained point-like high-temperature plasma (about 10 MK) near the null-point and constant outflow blobs not only along the outer spine but also along the fan surface. The blobs appear at a higher frequency than previously observed with an average velocity of about 80 km s−1 and life-times of about 40 s. The null-point reconnection also occurs explosively but only for 4 minutes, its coupling with a mini-filament eruption generates a spiral jet. These results suggest that magnetic reconnection, at previously unresolved scales, proceeds continually in a gentle and/or explosive way to persistently transfer mass and energy to the overlying corona.

2. Formation of a Long Filament Through the Connection of Two Filament Segments Observed by CHASE

Abstract

We present imaging and spectroscopic diagnostics of a long filament during its formation with the observations from the Chinese H α Solar Explorer and Solar Dynamics Observatory. The seed filament first appeared at about 05:00 UT on 2022 September 13. Afterward, it grew gradually and connected to another filament segment nearby, building up a long filament at about 20:00 UT on the same day. The CHASE H α spectra show an obvious centroid absorption with mild broadening at the main spine of the long filament, which is interpreted as evidence of filament material accumulation. More interestingly, near the footpoints of the filament, persistent redshifts have been detected in the H α spectra during the filament formation, indicating continuous drainage of filament materials. Furthermore, through inspecting the extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) images and magnetograms, it was found that EUV jets and brightenings appeared repeatedly at the junction of the two filament segments, where opposite magnetic polarities converged and canceled each other continuously. These results suggest the occurrence of intermittent magnetic reconnection that not only connects magnetic structures of the two filament segments but also supplies cold materials for the filament channel likely by the condensation of injected hot plasma, even though a part of the cold materials falls down to the filament footpoints at the same time.

Abstract

Solar filament eruptions, flares, and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are manifestations of drastic releases of energy in the magnetic field, which are related to many eruptive phenomena, from the Earth’s magnetosphere to black hole accretion disks. With the availability of high-resolution magnetograms on the solar surface, observational data-based modeling is a promising way to quantitatively study the underlying physical mechanisms behind observations. By incorporating thermal conduction and radiation losses in the energy equation, we develop a new data-driven radiative magnetohydrodynamic model, which has the capability of capturing the thermodynamic evolution compared to our previous zero- β model. Our numerical results reproduce the major observational characteristics of the X1.0 flare on 2021 October 28 in NOAA active region 12887, including the morphology of the eruption, the kinematics of the flare ribbons, extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiations, and the two components of the EUV waves predicted by the magnetic stretching model, i.e., a fast-mode shock wave and a slower apparent wave, due to successive stretching of the magnetic field lines. Moreover, some intriguing phenomena are revealed in the simulation. We find that flare ribbons separate initially and ultimately stop at the outer stationary quasi-separatrix layers (QSLs). Such outer QSLs correspond to the border of the filament channel and determine the final positions of flare ribbons, which can be used to predict the size and the lifetime of a flare before it occurs. In addition, the side views of the synthesized EUV and white-light images exhibit typical three-part structures of CMEs, where the bright leading front is roughly cospatial with the nonwave component of the EUV wave, reinforcing the use of the magnetic stretching model for the slow component of EUV waves.

Abstract

Classification rule set is important for Land Cover classification, which refers to features and decision rules. The selection of features and decision are based on an iterative trial-and-error approach that is often utilized in GEOBIA, however, it is time-consuming and has a poor versatility. This study has put forward a rule set building method for Land cover classification based on human knowledge and machine learning. The use of machine learning is to build rule sets effectively which will overcome the iterative trial-and-error approach. The use of human knowledge is to solve the shortcomings of existing machine learning method on insufficient usage of prior knowledge, and improve the versatility of rule sets. A two-step workflow has been introduced, firstly, an initial rule is built based on Random Forest and CART decision tree. Secondly, the initial rule is analyzed and validated based on human knowledge, where we use statistical confidence interval to determine its threshold. The test site is located in Potsdam City. We utilised the TOP, DSM and ground truth data. The results show that the method could determine rule set for Land Cover classification semi-automatically, and there are static features for different land cover classes.

Abstract

GEOBIA (Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis) is not only a hot topic of current remote sensing and geographical research. It is believed to be a paradigm in remote sensing and GIScience. The lack of a systematic approach designed to conceptualize and formalize the class definitions makes GEOBIA a highly subjective and difficult method to reproduce. This paper aims to put forward a framework for GEOBIA based on geographic ontology theory, which could implement "Geographic entities - Image objects - Geographic objects" true reappearance. It consists of three steps, first, geographical entities are described by geographic ontology, second, semantic network model is built based on OWL(ontology web language), at last, geographical objects are classified with decision rule or other classifiers. A case study of farmland ontology was conducted for describing the framework. The strength of this framework is that it provides interpretation strategies and global framework for GEOBIA with the property of objective, overall, universal, universality, etc., which avoids inconsistencies caused by different experts’ experience and provides an objective model for mage analysis.

27. A color balancing method for wide range Remote Sensing imagery based on Regionalization

Abstract

Quick mosaicking of wide range remote sensing imagery is an important foundation for land resource survey and dynamic monitoring of environment and nature disasters. It is also technically important for basis imagery of geographic information acquiring and geographic information product updating. This paper mainly focuses on one key technique of mosaicking, color balancing for wide range Remote Sensing imagery. Due to huge amount of data, large covering rage, great variety of climate and geographical condition, color balancing for wide range remote sensing imagery is a difficult problem. In this paper we use Ecogeographic regionalization to divide the large area into several regions based on terrains and climatic data, construct the algorithmic framework of a color balancing method according to the regionalization result, which conduct from region edge to center to fit wide range imagery mosaicking. The experimental results with wide range HJ-1 dataset show that our method can significantly improve the wide range of remote sensing imagery color balancing effects: making images well-proportioned mosaicking and better in keeping images' original information. In summary, this color balancing method based on regionalization could be a good solution for nationwide remote sensing image color balancing and mosaicking.

28. High resolution remote sensing image segmentation based on graph theory and fractal net evolution approach

Abstract

Image segmentation is the foundation of further object-oriented image analysis, understanding and recognition. It is one of the key technologies in high resolution remote sensing applications. In this paper, a new fast image segmentation algorithm for high resolution remote sensing imagery is proposed, which is based on graph theory and fractal net evolution approach (FNEA). Firstly, an image is modelled as a weighted undirected graph, where nodes correspond to pixels, and edges connect adjacent pixels. An initial object layer can be obtained efficiently from graph-based segmentation, which runs in time nearly linear in the number of image pixels. Then FNEA starts with the initial object layer and a pairwise merge of its neighbour object with the aim to minimize the resulting summed heterogeneity. Furthermore, according to the character of different features in high resolution remote sensing image, three different merging criterions for image objects based on spectral and spatial information are adopted. Finally, compared with the commercial remote sensing software eCognition, the experimental results demonstrate that the efficiency of the algorithm has significantly improved, and the result can maintain good feature boundaries.

Abstract

The research on coupling both data source is very important for improving the accuracy of Image information interpretation and target recognition. In this paper a classifier is presented, which is based on integration of both active and passive remote sensing data and the Maximum Likelihood classification for inversion of soil moisture and this method is tested in Heihe river basin, a semi-arid area in the north-west of china. In the algorithm the wavelet transform and IHS are combined to integrate TM3, TM4, TM5 and ASAR data. The method of maximum distance substitution in local region is adopted as the fusion rule for prominent expression of the detailed information in the fusion image, as well as the spectral information of TM can be retained. Then the new R, G, B components in the fusion image and the TM6 is taken as the input to the Maximum Likelihood classification, and the output corresponds to five different categories according to different grades of soil moisture. The field measurements are carried out for validation of the method. The results show that the accuracy of completely correct classification is 66.3%, and if the discrepancy within one grade was considered to be acceptable, the precision is as high as 92.6%. Therefore the classifier can effectively be used to reflect the distribution of soil moisture in the study area.

Land Cover is the basis of geographic national conditions monitoring, extracting land cover information timely and accurately has become one of important tasks in the geographic national conditions surveying project. For the current situation of complex land cover type and large amount of data, there has emerged various new classification techniques and methods. However, the big difficult of classification，the large amount of data, the heavy workload of post-editing and other factors have seriously hampered the progress of the project. In this paper, it chooses high-resolution remote sensing image as original data, comprehensivly elaborates present research situation of oriented land cover classification. By the systematical analysis and summary of the basic and key problems of the land cover classification technology, relying on the geographic national information classification and standard system, discusses the available methods preliminarily to improve the accuracy of land cover classification which based on geographic national conditions surveying.

Abstract

Background: Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative brain disease in the elderly. Recent studies have revealed the heterogeneous nature of AD. Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is the prodromal stage of AD. Objectives: In this study, we identified subtypes of MCI based on genetic polymorphism and gene expression. Methods: We utilized the two types of omics data, namely genetic polymorphism and gene expression profiling, derived from 125 MCI patients’ peripheral blood samples from the ADNI-1 dataset. Similarity network fusion (SNF) algorithm was implemented to cluster MCI patient subtypes. And 185 MCI patients in ADNI-2 were utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of this method. Two MCI subtypes were identified by implementing the SNF algorithm. Results: We used Kaplan-Meier analysis and log-rank testing for the conversion from MCI to AD between two subtypes, and p-value is 4.58×10-3. In addition, we compared patients among two MCI subtypes by the following factors: the changes in Alzheimer’s Disease cognitive scales and MRI image; significantly enriched pathways based on differentially expressed genes. This study proved that MCI is a heterogeneous disease by concluding that AD development in two MCI subtypes is significantly different. Conclusions: MCI patients with different molecular characteristics have different risks converting to AD. In addition to evaluating statistics, genetic polymorphism and gene expression profiling from MCI patients’ peripheral blood are non-invasiveness and cost-effectiveness markers to identify MCI subtypes for clinical application.

Abstract

To investigate the influence of bluff body with a variable section on the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) energy harvesting performance, a series of hybrid cylinders are designed and a quantitative comparison is presented. The basic elements of hybrid bluff body are the D-shaped (D) and original circular-shaped cylinders (O), and the length ratio between the O-shaped part and the D-shaped part is fixed. According to the arrangement order, three kinds of hybrid bluff bodies are termed as ODO, ODODO and DOD. A distributed model is developed and the numerical simulation is carried out to verify the response. Corresponding wind tunnel experiments are conducted, and the results reveal that compared to the bluff body with a circular cylinder, the hybrid bluff bodies such as ODODO and DOD can enhance the VIV and thus increase the output significantly. Moreover, the lock-in regions with the ODODO and DOD shapes will increase by 12.5% and 62.5%, respectively. However, the results also indicate that some type of arrangement such as ODO will suppress the energy harvesting performance. Furthermore, the computational fluid dynamics method is employed to reveal the physical mechanism of flow field around the hybrid bluff body. The results show that the integration of D-shape prism in a cylinder along an axial direction could influence aerodynamics. A faster boundary layer separation occurs for the VIV energy harvesters with the hybrid cylinders of ODODO and DOD, which could improve the energy conversion efficiency from flow-induced vibrations. However, the aerodynamic force is restricted and response is suppressed as a D-shaped cylinder is sandwiched between two O-shaped cylinders.

Abstract

A classifier based on Bayesian theory and Markov random field (MRF) is presented to classify the active microwave and passive optical remote sensing data, which have demonstrated their respective advantages in inversion of surface soil moisture content. In the method, the VV, VH polarization of ASAR and all the 7 TM bands are taken as the input of the classifier to get the class labels of each pixel of the images. And the model is validated for the necessities of integration of TM and ASAR, it shows that, the total precision of classification in this paper is 89.4%. Comparing with the classification with single TM, the accuracy increase 11.5%, illustrating that synthesis of active and passive optical remote sensing data is efficient and potential in classification.

Abstract

A search is performed for localised excesses in dijet mass distributions of low-dijet-mass events produced in association with a high transverse energy photon. The search uses up to 79.8 fb−1 of LHC proton–proton collisions collected by the ATLAS experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV during 2015–2017. Two variants are presented: one which makes no jet flavour requirements and one which requires both jets to be tagged as b-jets. The observed mass distributions are consistent with multi-jet processes in the Standard Model. The data are used to set upper limits on the production cross-section for a benchmark Z′ model and, separately, on generic Gaussian-shape contributions to the mass distributions, extending the current ATLAS constraints on dijet resonances to the mass range between 225 and 1100 GeV.

Abstract

Cesarean delivery may increase the risk of childhood obesity, a precursor of metabolic syndrome (MetS). We aimed to investigate the association of elective cesarean delivery (ElCD) with MetS and its components in a Chinese birth cohort.This cohort included 1467 children (737 delivered by ElCD and 730 by spontaneous vaginal delivery [SVD]) who were followed up at the age of 4-7 years in 2013. MetS was defined as the presence of ≥3 components: central obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, low high-density lipoprotein (HDL), high fasting glucose, and hypertension. Of the 1467 children, 93 (6.3%) were categorized as having MetS: 50 (6.8%) delivered by ElCD and 43 (5.9%) by SVD. After multivariable adjustment, ElCD was not associated with MetS (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 1.15, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.74, 1.78) or certain components including hypertriglyceridemia, low HDL, and high fasting glucose but was associated with central obesity (AOR 1.33, 95% CI 1.02, 1.72) and hypertension (AOR 1.50, 95% CI 1.15, 1.96), as well as higher levels of total cholesterol (3.43 vs. 3.04 mmol/L; P 0.001), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (1.77 vs. 1.67 mmol/L, P = 0.002), fasting glucose (5.08 vs. 5.02 mmol/L, P = 0.022), systolic (97.57 vs. 94.69 mmHg, P 0.001)/diastolic blood pressure (63.72 vs. 62.24 mmHg, P 0.001), and BMI (15.46 vs. 14.83 kg/mElCD is not associated with MetS in early to middle childhood but is associated with its components including central obesity and hypertension, as well as various continuous indices.

Abstract

Estimation of genetic diversity and relative relatedness in breeding materials is critical for improving breeding efficiency. To compare the ability of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and insertion-deletion (InDel) markers for characterizing cultivated tomato germplasm, 120 SNPs and 109 InDels were used to genotype 191 tomato inbred lines representing cherry tomato, traditional varieties, and contemporary lines. The results showed that SNPs provided more information on genetic diversity than the InDels. The expected heterozygosity (He) of SNPs and InDels averaged 0.384 and 0.265, respectively, and the polymorphic information content (PIC) of these two markers was 0.302 and 0.221, respectively. Except for the cherry tomato group, the traditional group showed higher He and PIC for the SNP data, and the contemporary group had the higher InDel diversity. Population structure analysis revealed that the traditional varieties constituted distinct subpopulations relative to the contemporary lines with both marker systems, and three subpopulations were found within the traditional group with SNPs. Additionally, SNPs provided more resolution in discriminating the closely related tomato lines, and InDels may be more effective at resolving genotypes from an inter-gene pool. A lower correlation (R = 0.4155) was found between SNPs and InDels based on the genetic distances among accessions. The present study systematically compares the performance of SNP and InDel markers for population genetics analysis in cultivated tomato. These results contribute to the choice of molecular marker type for analysis of genetic diversity and other genetic studies in tomato.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To describe the thyroid function abnormality of first-trimester twin pregnant women according to different references, and to explore its association with preterm delivery. METHODS: Participants, first-trimester twin pregnant women, were recruited at Peking University Third Hospital from March 2017 to February 2020. The thyroid hormone reference for ordinary adults identified on the assay kits by Siemens incorporation, thyroid hormone reference specifically for singleton pregnancy established previously, and thyroid hormone reference specifically for twin pregnancy established previously were used in the description of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism for first-trimester twin pregnant women. Thyroid autoantibody reference identified on the assay kits by Siemens incorporation was used in the description of positive thyroid autoantibody. Multivariable log-binomial regression was conducted to examine the association between thyroid function and preterm delivery, in which normal pregnant women according to the three references and normal pregnant women according to twin pregnancy reference accompanied with negative thyroid autoantibody were taken as control respectively. RESULTS: A total of 570 twin pregnant women were finally included. Rates of hypothyroidism according to the three references were 1.2%, 1.6% and 3.5%, respectively. Rates of hyperthyroidism according to the three references were 32.6%, 18.1% and 1.1%, respectively. After adjustment for potential confounding factors, risk of preterm delivery significantly increased in pregnant women with hyperthyroidism according to the twin specific pregnancy reference [adjusted relative risk (ARR)=1.41, 95%CI: 1.14-1.75], while no significant increase was found in those with normal thyroid function according to the twin specific pregnancy reference but hyperthyroidism according to the singleton specific pregnancy reference (ARR=1.00, 95%CI: 0.81-1.25) and in those with hyperthyroidism purely according to the ordinary adult reference (ARR=1.06, 95%CI: 0.85-1.32), compared with those normal according to all the references. Risks of preterm delivery almost significantly or significantly increased in pregnant women with hypothyroidism according to the ordinary adult or singleton specific pregnancy reference (ARR=1.40, 95%CI: 0.88-2.22) and those with hypothyroidism according to the twin specific pregnancy reference (ARR=1.53, 95%CI: 1.03-2.28). Overall analysis of thyroid function according to the twin specific pregnancy reference and thyroid autoantibody showed that risks of preterm delivery almost significantly or significantly increased in pregnant women with simple hypothyroidism (ARR=1.46, 95%CI: 0.93-2.27), simple positive thyroid autoantibody (ARR=1.32, 95%CI: 1.15-1.52), and hypothyroidism accompanied with positive thyroid autoantibody (ARR=1.78, 95%CI: 1.30-2.44), compared with those normal according to the twin specific pregnancy reference with negative thyroid autoantibody. CONCLUSION: The ordinary adult reference and that of singleton pregnancy may lead to under-diagnosis of hypothyroidism and over-diagnosis of hyperthyroidism in first-trimester twin pregnant women. Compared with pregnant women with normal thyroid function, those missed in the diagnosis of hypothyroidism were at a higher risk of preterm delivery, while those over-diagnosed as hyperthyroidism had a similar risk of preterm delivery, indicating a need to develop and generalize twin-pregnancy-specific reference on common indicators of thyroid function. Moreover, the thyroid autoantibody should be taken into consideration in the prenatal diagnosis and treatment to twin pregnant women with hypothyroidism.

However, under public health emergencies, such as the outbreak of COVID-19, the work strategies of clinical pharmacists need to be modified according to the rapid spread of the disease, where information and resources are usually lack to guide them. Objective To retrieve and investigate the prevention and control measures of clinical pharmacists during the outbreak of novel coronavirus, summarize the roles and responsibilities of clinical pharmacists, and to propose innovative strategies for developing pharmacy services under the epidemic. Methods The Chinese and English databases, self-media network, website of professional society or medical institution, and clinical trial center platforms were searched, and clinical pharmacists involved in the work against COVID-19 were surveyed and interviewed. Investigate the challenges and needs of frontline medical staffs for treating patients, and formulate strategies based on the actual medical environment. Results Clinical pharmacists play a vital role in leading the industry to formulate work instructions, provide frontline medical staff with drug information, and develop innovative pharmacy services to promote the rational use of medicines with collaborative teamwork and close communication according to the epidemic situation of COVID-19. Anti-epidemic work indeed has driven the development of remote pharmacy services. Conclusion Facing public health emergencies, clinical pharmacists can give full play to their professional expertise, analyze the current situation rationally, formulate telehealth strategies swiftly, and work in a united and efficient manner to provide innovative pharmacy services to ensure medication safety and rational use of medicine.

Abstract

In this paper, we conduct an experimental study on the cavity evolution behind a hydrophobic sphere entering the water. It is found that there is a correlation between splash and cavity evolution. Two dominant regimes for cavity pinch-off, including hydrostatic pressure and pressure pulsation inside cavity, are confirmed. When the splash is removed by a guard, the cavity pinch-off is dominated by hydrostatic pressure. The theoretical model is well consistent with the experimental results, including the cavity profile and the dimensionless pinch-off depth. However, when the splash domes, the theoretical solution fails with the increase in the effect of pressure pulsation inside the closed cavity. With the increase in the Froude number Fr, the splash closure most significantly impacts the necking position. The impact of the splash closure is dependent of Fr, and there is a critical value of Frcri separating the deep pinch-off into two regimes. The critical value of Frcri = 134 is theoretically proposed, which is a reasonable predication for the present experimental observations. In addition, the expansion rate of cavity volume is measured to confirm the transition of distinct regimes. Based on our theoretical analysis, the critical expansion rate is determined as 4.9, which agrees well with present experimental result 4.6. Distinct pinch-off regimes significantly impact the subsequent cavity evolution and the forces on sphere. A deep seal controlled by hydrostatic pressure is constantly accompanied by severe cavity resonance and a dramatic decrease in the cavity length, whereas pinch-off controlled by pressure pulsation leads to weak ripples.

Abstract

BACKGROUND For patients with chronic diseases requiring long-term use of medications who are quarantined at home, the management of medication therapy during the COVID-19 epidemic is a problem that pharmacists urgently need to discuss and solve. OBJECTIVE To establish an online pharmacy consulting service model and to launch the application of tele-pharmacy services during the COVID-19 epidemic. METHODS To establish a remote pharmaceutical service model based on a medication consultation service platform under the official account of the "Beijing Pharmacists Association" on the social software WeChat app, obtain the medication consultation records from February 28 to March 27, 2020, and perform a statistical analysis of the information about the patients seeking consultation, consultation process, content and follow-up results. RESULTS The medication consultation service system and tele-pharmacy service model based on social software were established in February 2020. The "Cloud Pharmacy Care" platform had 915 views and 43 followers and completed 13 counselling cases in the first month. Counselling was available for patients of all ages; of the 13 cases, 61.54% of patients were young and middle-aged. During the COVID-19 epidemic, the long-term medication usage problems of patients with chronic disease were effectively addressed using "Cloud Pharmacy Care". In the consultation, 11 cases (84.6%) were related to the use of medicines or health products, and 2 cases (15.4%) involved disease state management and the use of supplements. The top five drug-related issues included the dosage of drugs, medication therapy management of chronic diseases, the selection of medications, adverse drug reactions and medications for special populations. All consultations were completed within 4 hours, with a positive review rate of 91.7%. CONCLUSIONS During the COVID-19 epidemic, a remote pharmacy service "Cloud Pharmacy Care" based on the social software WeChat app was quickly constructed and applied to solve the medication-related problems of patients and the public during home quarantining. This timely and interactive consultation mode helps to carry out medication therapy management for chronically ill patients and improves patients' medication compliance, improves medical quality and plays a positive role in promoting the popularization of safe medication knowledge.
