Members of the U.S. Climate Alliance, a coalition of 24 states committed to achieving the emissions reductions outlined in the 2015 Paris Agreement, are considering policy options for inclusion of forest carbon in climate mitigation plans. These initiatives are generally limited by a lack of relevant data on forest carbon stocks and fluxes past-to-future. Previously, we developed a new forest carbon modeling system that combined high-resolution remote sensing, field data, and ecological modeling to estimate contemporary above-ground forest carbon stocks, and projected future forest carbon sequestration potential for the state of Maryland. Here we extended this work to provide a consistent geospatial approach for monitoring changes in forest carbon stocks over time. Utilizing the same data and modeling system developed previously for planning, we integrated historical input data on weather and disturbance to reconstruct the history of vegetation dynamics and forest above-ground carbon stocks annually over the period 1984–2016 at 30 m resolution and provided an extension to 2023. Statewide, forested land had an average annual net above ground carbon sink of 1.37 TgC yr ^−1 , comparable to prior estimates. However, unlike the prior estimates, there was considerable variation around this mean. The statewide net above ground flux ranged interannually from −0.65 to 2.77 Tg C yr ^−1 . At the county scale, the average annual net above ground flux ranged spatially from 0.01 to 0.13 Tg C yr ^−1 and spatiotemporally from −0.43 to 0.24 Tg C yr ^−1 . Attribution analyses indicate the primary importance of persistent and regrowing forests, vegetation structure, local disturbance, and rising CO _2 to the mean flux, and the primary importance of weather to the large-scale interannual variability. These results have important implications for state climate mitigation planning, reporting and assessment. With this approach, it is now possible to monitor changes in forest carbon stocks spatiotemporally over policy relevant domains with a consistent framework that is also enabled for future planning.

Direct laser acceleration of electrons during a high-energy, picosecond laser interaction with an underdense plasma has been demonstrated to be substantially enhanced by controlling the laser focusing geometry. Experiments using the OMEGA EP facility measured electrons accelerated to maximum energies exceeding 120 times the ponderomotive energy under certain laser focusing, pulse energy, and plasma density conditions. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that the laser focusing conditions alter the laser field evolution, channel fields generation, and electron oscillation, all of which contribute to the final electron energies. The optimal laser focusing condition occurs when the transverse oscillation amplitude of the accelerated electron in the channel fields matches the laser beam width, resulting in efficient energy gain. Through this observation, a simple model was developed to calculate the optimal laser focal spot size in more general conditions and is validated by experimental data.

The inclusion of forest carbon in climate change mitigation planning requires the development of models able to project potential future carbon stocks—a step beyond traditional monitoring, reporting and verification frameworks. Here, we updated and expanded a high-resolution forest carbon modelling approach previously developed for the state of Maryland to 11 states in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) domain, which includes Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont. In this study, we employ an updated version of the Ecosystem Demography (ED) model, an improved lidar initialization strategy, and an expanded calibration/validation approach. High resolution (90 m) wall-to-wall maps of present aboveground carbon, aboveground carbon sequestration potential, aboveground carbon sequestration potential gap (CSPG), and time to reach sequestration potential were produced over the RGGI domain where airborne lidar data were available, including 100% of eight states, 62% of Maine, 12% of New Jersey, and 0.65% of New York. For the eight states with complete data, an area of 228 552 km ^2 , the contemporary forest aboveground carbon stock is estimated to be 1134 Tg C, and the forest aboveground CSPG is estimated to be larger at >1770 Tg C. Importantly, these estimates of the potential for added aboveground carbon sequestration in forests are spatially resolved, are further partitioned between continued growth of existing trees and new afforested/reforested areas, and include time estimates for realization. They are also assessed for sensitivity to potential changes in vegetation productivity and disturbance rate in response to climate change. The results from this study are intended as input into regional, state, and local planning efforts that consider future climate mitigation in forests along with other land-use considerations.

Abstract We report multi-differential measurements of strange hadron production ranging from mid- to target-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at a center-of-momentum energy per nucleon pair of s NN $$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ = 3 GeV with the STAR experiment at RHIC. K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ meson and Λ hyperon yields are measured via their weak decay channels. Collision centrality and rapidity dependences of the transverse momentum spectra and particle ratios are presented. Particle mass and centrality dependence of the average transverse momenta of Λ and K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ are compared with other strange particles, providing evidence of the development of hadronic rescattering in such collisions. The 4π yields of each of these strange hadrons show a consistent centrality dependence. Discussions on radial flow, the strange hadron production mechanism, and properties of the medium created in such collisions are presented together with results from hadronic transport and thermal model calculations.

Heterosis is a prevalent phenomenon in nature and is widely found in animals and plants, but the molecular mechanism of heterosis is still unclear. As the model insect of Lepidoptera, Bombyx mori is an ideal material to carry out heterosis research. In current study, we employed proteomic and genetic cross approaches to globally identify differentially expressed proteins in parental silkworms JingSong and HaoYue and their F1 hybrids. The results showed that there were significant differences between hybrids and their parents. In all, 28 differentially expressed proteins were successfully identified through MALDI-TOF-TOF mass spectrometry and database searches. Interestingly, three silk-related proteins were also obtained and identified, including fibroin L-chain, Nd-sD mutant fibroin light chain and fibrohexamerin, which were further confirmed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Consistent trends were also found in other genes. Taken together, our work not only provides the theoretical basis for the study of molecular mechanism of heterosis, but also provides candidate proteins and genes for the improvement of yield of silkworm.

The molting is an essential part of the silkworm metamorphosis development. Although previous studies have demonstrated that molting in silkworm is associated with prothoracicotropic hormone (PTTH), molting hormone (MH), and juvenile hormone (JH), the changes of proteins and genes during silkworm molting, as well as the molecular mechanism about its generating and maintaining remains unclear. In this paper, the proteomic approaches were employed to investigate this issue. Totally, 35 different proteins were successfully identified through mass spectrometry and database searches, among which 42 % proteins were involved in cell structure and 16 % proteins belonged to the metabolism group. Meanwhile, vacuolar ATP synthase, juvenile hormone binding protein precursor and adenylate kinase isoenzyme were found to be down-regulated at early, mid-molt stages, which were further confirmed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Taken together, our data suggests that juvenile hormone binding protein (JHBP) and adenylate kinase (AK) play a critical role in the process of silkworm molting, which may participate in the regulation of silkworm molting.

Forests are important ecosystems that are under increasing pressure from human use and environmental change, and have a significant ability to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and are therefore the focus of policy efforts aimed at reducing deforestation and degradation as well as increasing afforestation and reforestation for climate mitigation. Critical to these efforts is the accurate monitoring, reporting and verification of current forest cover and carbon stocks. For planning, the additional step of modeling is required to quantitatively estimate forest carbon sequestration potential in response to alternative land-use and management decisions. To be most useful and of decision-relevant quality, these model estimates must be at very high spatial resolution and with very high accuracy to capture important heterogeneity on the land surface and connect to monitoring efforts. Here, we present results from a new forest carbon monitoring and modeling system that combines high-resolution remote sensing, field data, and ecological modeling to estimate contemporary above-ground forest carbon stocks, and project future forest carbon sequestration potential for the state of Maryland at 90 m resolution. Statewide, the contemporary above-ground carbon stock was estimated to be 110.8 Tg C (100.3–125.8 Tg C), with a corresponding mean above-ground biomass density of 103.7 Mg ha ^−1 which was within 2% of independent empirically-based estimates. The forest above-ground carbon sequestration potential for the state was estimated to be much larger at 314.8 Tg C, and the forest above-ground carbon sequestration potential gap (i.e. potential-current) was estimated to be 204.1 Tg C, nearly double the current stock. These results imply a large statewide potential for future carbon sequestration from afforestation and reforestation activities. The high spatial resolution of the model estimates underpinning these totals demonstrate important heterogeneity across the state and can inform prioritization of actual afforestation/reforestation opportunities. With this approach, it is now possible to quantify both the forest carbon stock and future carbon sequestration potential over large policy relevant areas with sufficient accuracy and spatial resolution to significantly advance planning.

This systematic review analyzes the research literature on student voice and agency in the middle grades, focusing on middle-level schools, culture, and learning environments. The idea of student voice and agency was taken up as collaborative decision-making and/or student feedback on issues related to school and pedagogy. After a comprehensive search for peer-reviewed research (2015–2024), an article review framework was developed to determine how, where, and why student voices and agency were engaged in the middle grades. Three themes characterized the research literature: (1) passive student voice and agency: researcher-driven studies to gain understanding; (2) active student voice and agency: partnering with students to improve their learning experiences; and (3) activating the inner voice and agency: helping students to reflect on their own learning. The research on student voice and agency provided information that directly and indirectly benefited students. The literature related to passive student voice and agency tended to be indirect, while active student voice and agency and activating students’ inner voice and agency tended to provide tangible and observable student benefits. While the studies were responsive to different aspects of young adolescent development and included foci on students’ social/emotional development and identity, other areas were lacking—including culturally responsive teaching, international perspectives, and sense of self/peer perceptions.

BACKGROUND: Podocyte injury plays an important role in glomerulosclerosis in IgA nephropathy (IgAN), and detachment from the glomerular basement membrane is the main cause of podocyte damage. In a previous study we found that medium from mesangial cells incubated with aggregated IgA1 (aIgA1) isolated from IgAN patients decreased podocyte adhesive capacity. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS:Podocytes were incubated in medium from mesangial cells incubated with aIgA1 isolated from IgAN patients, enalaprilat (10–5 M) and chymostatin (20 μM), or with enalaprilat and chymostatin separately. Podocyte adhesive capacity was evaluated by cell counting and hexosaminidase assay. Expression of the renin angiotensin system was measured by real-time PCR, Western blot analysis and ELISA. Abstract Background The established recommendations and guidelines regarding ideal measurements for an attractive face are mostly based on data gathered among Caucasian population. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between perception of 3-dimensional facial attractiveness and golden ratio, neoclassical canons, ‘ideal’ ratios and ‘ideal’ angles in Hong Kong Chinese. Methods Thirty 3-D photographs (15 males and 15 females) were shown to 101 laypersons and 60 patients seeking orthognathic treatment. Extracting the seismic deformation field and analyzing the surface deformation after an earthquake occurs are of great significance for explaining earthquake mechanism and earthquake relief. Through the dual polarization mode of the two-pass method D-InSAR technology, this paper extracted the coseismic deformation fields based on two Sentinel-1A SAR images covering the Yulin earthquake area, and analyzed the surface deformation. The results show that the subsidence area obtained by VV and VH polarization modes are consistent. The uplift center areas are located in Tongxin Village in Rong County and Mapo Town in Luchuan County, and the subsidence center area is located in Fuxin Town of Beiliu City in the northeast. In the earthquake area, the maximum uplift derived by the VV mode SAR data is 12.1 cm, and the maximum subsidence is 5.8 cm. the maximum uplift obtained by the VH mode SAR data is 11.2 cm, and the maximum subsidence is 9 cm. The results obtained by the two polarization modes are consistent. D-InSAR technology can accurately obtain the coseismic deformation field, which provides data guarantee for the follow-up study of the inversion of seismic source parameters in the region.

ABSTRACT The carbohydrate response element-binding protein (ChREBP) is an important nuclear factor that regulates glycolysis and de novo lipogenesis. However, the role of ChREBP in fatty liver development in geese remains unclear. In order to understand the function of ChREBP in lipid metabolism of geese, we first cloned the complete cDNA of the ChREBP of the Sichuan White goose (Anser cygnoides) using RT-PCR, 5’ RACE and 3’ RACE, and analyzed goose ChREBP expression in nine different tissues using real-time PCR technology. The results showed that the goose ChREBP CDS consists of 945bp nucleotides that encode 314 amino acids, and the sequence has high similarities with the swan goose (Anser cygnoides domesticus) and duck (Anas platyrhynchos) sequences, both at the nucleotide and amino acid levels. The predicted ChREBP protein had a molecular mass of 35.64 kDa with pI value of 5.36. The phylogenetic analysis indicated its evolutionary relationships with corresponding orthologous sequences in swan geese and ducks. The qPCR assays revealed that ChREBP is highly expressed in liver in the Sichuan White goose. Together, these results indicate that goose ChREBP may play an important role in the development of hepatic steatosis.

The GaoFen-7 (GF-7) satellite is successfully launched on November 3, 2019, and its laser altimeter system is officially and firstly employed as the main payload for earth observations in China, which includes two sets of laser altimeters and laser footprint cameras. The Laser Footprint Image (LFI) is used to capture laser spots on the ground. In order to make up for the shortcomings of high cost field work for the traditional laser altimeter ground detector-based calibration method, this paper proposes a novel laser altimeter calibration method based on LFI. Firstly, the spaceborne laser calibration model and the Laser Footprint Camera (LFC) geolocation model are established. Secondly, the image coordinates of laser spot centroid are extracted from LFI, and the ground location of is obtained by ray intersecting with the reference Digital Surface Model (DSM). Finally, the centroid of laser spot is considered as Ground Control Point (GCP), and the pointing bias of GF-7 laser altimeter is calibrated by the Least Squares Estimation (LSE). The ALOS Global Digital Surface Model “ALOS World 3D-30m” (AW3D30) is used to evaluate the elevation accuracy of GF-7 laser altimeter before and after the calibration. The results indicate that elevation accuracy of the GF-7 laser altimeter is improved significantly after calibration. The proposed method can be effectively applied for high-frequency geometric calibration of GF-7 laser altimeter.

Abstract Background Post stroke cognitive difficulties are common but generally prioritised below other impairments. In the UK, clinical guidelines recommend a holistic review at six-months post-stroke including an assessment of cognitive function. In order to assist clinicians to provide better care for patients with post-stroke cognitive deficits and assist with service planning, our aim was to establish professional consensus on key actions at the six-month review. Methods An electronic Delphi survey was developed with ten potential actions for clinicians to prioritise across five different clinical scenarios describing patients with cognitive difficulties. Scenarios varied in terms of age of the stroke-survivor, stroke severity and use of dementia risk assessment. A panel of professional volunteers was obtained through the British Association of Stroke Physicians and the UK National Stroke Nursing Forum. Results Forty-five stroke clinicians completed round one, with 21 participants completing round two. Priorities consistently supported by professionals included access to psychological services, screening for a mood disorder and ensuring multi-professional input. Direct access to specialist memory services was not generally supported unless a dementia risk assessment tool indicated that the individual was at high risk of dementia. Conclusions Assessment of post-stroke cognitive deficits needs to be routinely considered during the six-month review. A formal risk assessment tool could be a way to streamline direct access to memory clinic services to ensure that individuals at-risk of dementia receive ongoing care.

IntroductionCervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women in Malawi. Low awareness of cervical cancer and negative perceptions of screening can prevent women from participating in preventative strategies. We sought to explore perceptions and motivations for screening among women who participated in a cervical cancer screen-and-treat pilot study in rural Malawi.Materials and methodsWe conducted a qualitative sub-study of a community-based cervical cancer screen-and-treat pilot study in rural Lilongwe between July-August 2017. From October 2017-February 2018, 17 women who underwent screening using visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) and same-day thermal ablation treatment were recruited at their 12-week follow-up visit post treatment to participate in this qualitative sub-study. Semi-structured interview guides that explored baseline knowledge of cervical cancer, perceptions, and motivation for screening were used for in-depth interviews (IDIs). IDIs were conducted in the local language, Chichewa, translated and transcribed to English. Data was analyzed using NVivo® V12.0.ResultsFindings included fatalistic views on cancer, but limited knowledge specific to cervical cancer. Misconceptions of cervical cancer screening were common; however, there was a unique understanding of screening as prevention (i.e., finding and treating early disease to prevent progression to worsening disease). This understanding appeared to stem from HIV prevention concepts known to the community. Motivations for screening included desire to know one's health status, convenience of community-based screening, and peer encouragement.ConclusionDespite limited knowledge of cervical cancer and misconceptions of screening, the concept of screening for prevention, desire to know one's health status, convenient access, and peers' influence were motivators for participation in screening. Cervical cancer screen-and-treat programs in high HIV prevalence areas should consider utilizing language that parallels HIV prevention language to communicate the need for cervical cancer screening and treatment and utilize prevention concepts that may already be familiar to women living there.

IntroductionLong-term care engagement of women on antiretroviral therapy (ART) is essential to effective HIV public health measures. We sought to explore factors associated with a history of HIV treatment interruption among pregnant women living with HIV presenting to an antenatal clinic in Lilongwe, Malawi.MethodsWe performed a cross-sectional study of pregnant women living with HIV who had a history of ART interruption presenting for antenatal care. Women were categorized as either retained in HIV treatment or reinitiating care after loss-to-follow up (LTFU). To understand factors associated with treatment interruption, we surveyed socio-demographic and partner relationship characteristics. Crude and adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR) for factors associated with ART interruption were estimated using modified Poisson regression with robust variance. We additionally present patients' reasons for ART interruption.ResultsWe enrolled 541 pregnant women living with HIV (391 retained and 150 reinitiating). The median age was 30 years (interquartile range (IQR): 25-34). Background In stable coronary artery disease, medications are used for 2 purposes: cardiovascular risk reduction and symptom improvement. In clinical trials and clinical practice, medication use is often not optimal. The ORBITA (Objective Randomised Blinded Investigation With Optimal Medical Therapy of Angioplasty in Stable Angina) trial was the first placebo‐controlled trial of percutaneous coronary intervention. A key component of the ORBITA trial design was the inclusion of a medical optimization phase, aimed at ensuring that all patients were treated with guideline‐directed truly optimal medical therapy. In this study, we report the medical therapy that was achieved. Methods and Results After enrollment into the ORBITA trial, all 200 patients entered a 6‐week period of intensive medical therapy optimization, with initiation and uptitration of risk reduction and antianginal therapy. At the prerandomization stage, the median number of antianginals established was 3 (interquartile range, 2–4). A total of 195 patients (97.5%) reached the prespecified target of ≥2 antianginals; 136 (68.0%) did not stop any antianginals because of adverse effects, and the median number of antianginals stopped for adverse effects per patient was 0 (interquartile range, 0–1). Amlodipine and bisoprolol were well tolerated (stopped for adverse effects in 4/175 [2.3%] and 9/167 [5.4%], respectively). Ranolazine and ivabradine were also well tolerated (stopped for adverse effects in 1/20 [5.0%] and 1/18 [5.6%], respectively). Isosorbide mononitrate and nicorandil were stopped for adverse effects in 36 of 172 (20.9%) and 32 of 141 (22.7%) of patients, respectively. Statins were well tolerated and taken by 191 of 200 (95.5%) patients. Conclusions In the 12‐week ORBITA trial period, medical therapy was successfully optimized and well tolerated, with few drug adverse effects leading to therapy cessation. Truly optimal medical therapy can be achieved in clinical trials, and translating this into longer‐term clinical practice should be a focus of future study. Purpose: The primary goal of this study was to identify characteristic features of peripheral degenerative retinoschisis (RS), schisis detachment (SD) and retinal detachment (RD) on both fundus autofluorescence (FAF) and infrared (IR) imaging, using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) imaging of the peripheral retina as the confirmatory imaging tool. Methods: This is a descriptive case series study. A total of 27 eyes of 22 patients were included. Thirteen eyes of 10 patients diagnosed with RS, 4 eyes of 3 patients diagnosed with SD, and 10 eyes of 9 patients diagnosed with RD were included. Patients with images of poor quality were excluded. Heidelberg Spectralis HRA + OCT machine (Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany) were used to acquire the images. Results: All conditions appeared as areas of hypo-AF on FAF and hypo-reflectance on IR imaging. Accentuated vasculature of the lesion was noted with IR imaging due to elevation of the RS and RD, which was less frequently observed with FAF. On FAF, a hyper-AF leading edge around the RS lesion indicated the presence of intraretinal or subretinal fluid and an extension of the RS. Retinal breaks/holes were best visualized with IR imaging. SD-OCT confirmed the diagnosis in all performed cases. Conclusions: We were unable to differentiate between RS and RD based solely on findings from FAF and IR imaging. However, the combination of them with SD-OCT can assist in the diagnosis of RS from RD and in the evaluation of RS progression. OCT remains the main modality imaging to differentiate these conditions.

Background This study aimed to investigate longitudinal physiological changes in the recanalized coronary chronic total occlusion (CTO) vessel and its dependent myocardium after successful percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Methods and Results In this pilot study, 25 patients scheduled for elective CTO PCI with viable myocardium and angiographically visible collaterals were included. Absolute coronary blood flow and absolute microvascular resistance were measured invasively using continuous thermodilution. Measurements were performed immediately after successful CTO PCI and at short‐term follow‐up. In a subgroup of patients, physiological measurements were performed at the predominant donor vessel before CTO PCI, immediately afterwards, and at follow‐up.
