Magnetic-field-induced strains in Ni-Mn-Ga alloys have shown promise since their recent discovery. Large, free strains and moderate AC strains that provide mechanical work have already been demonstrated by this author and others. If the development of this ferromagnetic shape memory alloy (FSMA) is to continue towards application, its preparation and processing need to routinized so that its properties are as consistent as possible. Here, a first look into the AC stiffness, susceptibility, magneto-mechanical coefficient and coupling coefficient properties will be shown and their dependencies interpreted. Close to the austenite start temperature, results shown here may indicate better AC actuation performance 10-20°C below the martensite transformation temperature due to lattice softening. Through these results, an engineer will start to understand some of the technical issues necessary for designing FSMAs into applications.

Background: Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common disorder in the primary care setting. Traditional management strategies consist of sequentially intensive therapeutic trials followed by invasive diagnostic testing for nonresponders. A high dose proton pump inhibitor trial (the ‘proton pump inhibitor test’) has been shown to be an accurate diagnostic alternative, and may be an efficient initial approach to patients with GERD symptoms. Aim: To examine the clinical, economic and policy implications of alternative management strategies for GERD. Methods: Decision analysis was used to calculate the clinical and economic outcomes of competing management strategies. The traditional strategy incorporates sequential therapeutic trials with more intensive therapy (‘step-up’ approach) followed by sequential invasive diagnostic testing of nonresponders. The ‘proton pump inhibitor test’ strategy includes an initial ‘proton pump inhibitor test’ (7 days of omeprazole; 40 mg AM + 20 mg PM daily) followed by less intensive therapeutic trials in those testing positive (‘step-down’ approach) with sequential invasive diagnostic testing as needed. Cost estimates were based on Medicare reimbursement and average wholesale drug prices. Probability estimates were derived from a systematic review of the published medical literature. Model results are reported as the average and incremental cost-per-symptom free patient and cost-per-quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) gained. Results: The average cost per patient was $1045 for the traditional step-up management strategy, compared to $1172 for the ‘proton pump inhibitor test’ and step-down strategy. The percentage of patients who were symptom-free at 1 year was 50% for the traditional management strategy compared to 75% for the ‘proton pump inhibitor test’ strategy. The ‘proton pump inhibitor test’ strategy results in QALY gains of 0.01–0.05 depending on the utility estimate employed. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio for the ‘proton pump inhibitor test’ strategy is $510 per additional symptomatic cure over 1 year, and between $2822–$10 160 per QALY gained. The traditional management strategy resulted in a greater than 5-fold increase in the utilization of upper endoscopy, which was partially offset by a 47% reduction in the use of ambulatory 24-h oesophageal pH monitoring. The reduced effectiveness of the traditional management strategy may be attributed in part to a 118% increase in the use of ‘high-dose’ H2RAs while reducing the use of standard dose proton pump inhibitors by only 42% and ‘high-dose’ proton pump inhibitors by 57%. Conclusions: Based on the results of this analysis, strategies utilizing the initial PPI test followed by a ‘step-down’ approach may result in improved symptom relief and quality of life over 1 year, and more appropriate utilization of invasive diagnostic testing at a small marginal increase in total costs. These findings warrant a prospective trial comparing these competing management strategies.

A services marketing approach was applied to examine the determinants of satisfaction of first-time and repeat museum visitors. Data collected from 134 visitors to a community museum indicate that first-time and repeat visitors differ in their segment profiles and in the dimensions of their satisfaction with the museum experience.

We derive a generalised concavity condition for potentials between static sources obtained from Wilson loops coupling both to gauge bosons and a set of scalar fields. It involves the second derivatives with respect to the distance in ordinary space as well as with respect to the relative orientation in internal space. In addition we discuss the use of this field theoretical condition as a nontrivial consistency check of the AdS/CFT duality.

Rising costs of ship time and increasing budgetary constraints limit current fisheries acoustic survey practices. The limited spatial coverage and relative infrequency of such surveys compromise their value to fisheries managers. The Liquid Robotics Wave Glider allows scientists to collect data in a wider range of weather conditions and using fewer man-hours than typical shipboard acoustic surveys while operating at a greatly reduced cost. As part of an NSF-sponsored research project, Cornell University, BioSonics, Inc. and Liquid Robotics collaborated to design and manufacture a custom tow-body containing a specially modified dual-frequency BioSonics echosounder with 70-kHz and 200-kHz transducers. The tow body was attached to the submerged glider unit of a Liquid Robotics Wave Glider with a compliant tow cable to provide mechanical isolation between the Wave Glider and the tow body. Liquid Robotics conducted a series of tests in Kealakekua Bay, Hawaii, during March 2011 and March 2012 with the goal of evaluating the ability of the system to detect the mesopelagic boundary community's (MBC) offshore to onshore and upward vertical migration. The system was shown to be an effective method for collecting high-quality acoustic data for studying patterns in the distribution and migration of marine organisms. It also holds great promise for applications oriented towards continuous assessment of commercial fish stocks and the monitoring of marine ecosystem health.

Starting from the well-known expression for the trace anomaly we derive the $T\cdot T$ operator product expansion of the energy-momentum tensor in 2D conformal theories defined in the upper halfplane $without$ making use of the additional condition of no energy-momentum flux across the boundary. The OPE turns out to be the same as in the absence of the boundary. For this result it is crucial that the trace anomaly is proportional to the Gau\ss-Bonnet density. For American Protestants who were sensitive to the profound social disruptions associated with rapid industrialization and urbanization in the late nineteenth century, the twin discoveries of the “alienation” of the working class from Protestant churches and of a rising and vibrant socialist movement caused much consternation and anxious soul-searching. Socialism offered not only a radical critique of American political and economic institutions; it also offered the zeal, symbols, and sense of participation in a world-transforming cause often associated with Christianity itself. The religious alienation of the working class and the appeal of socialism were often causally linked in the minds of socially-conscious Protestant leaders.

CNS remyelination and functional recovery often occur after experimental demyelination in adult rodents. This has been attributed to the ability of mature oligodendrocytes and/or their precursor cells to divide and regenerate in response to signals in demyelinating lesions. To determine whether oligodendrocyte precursor cells exist in the adult human CNS, we have cultured white matter from patients undergoing partial temporal lobe resection for intractable epilepsy. These cultures contained a population of process-bearing cells that expressed antigens recognized by the O4 monoclonal antibody, but these cells did not express galactocerebroside (a marker for oligodendrocytes), glial fibrillary acidic protein (a marker for astrocytes), or vimentin. Selective elimination of O4-positive (O4+) cells by complement-mediated lysis resulted in inhibition of oligodendrocyte development in vitro. Since O4+ cells have an antigenic phenotype reminiscent of the rat adult oligodendrocyte-type 2 astrocyte progenitor and appear to develop into oligodendrocytes rather than type 2 astrocytes with time in culture, we call them “pre-oligodendrocytes.” Neither pre-oligodendrocytes nor oligodendrocytes incorporated 3H- thymidine in response to rat astrocyte-conditioned medium, platelet- derived growth factor, insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), or basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF). However, IGF-1 increased the relative abundance of oligodendrocytes to pre-oligodendrocytes, while bFGF had the opposite effect. Cells with the antigenic phenotype of pre- oligodendrocytes were also identified in tissue prints of adult human white matter. We propose that, in human demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis, pre-oligodendrocytes may divide and/or migrate in response to signals present in demyelinated lesions and thus facilitate remyelination.

We generalize the relation of the Weyl-anomaly coefficients to renormalization-group functions, and the Curci-Paffuti relation to the case of two-dimensional σ models on manifolds with boundary. The analysis is based on the use of minimal subtraction in a regularization with a dimensional cutoff. The renormalization-group functions are different on and off the boundary. This explicit dependence on the position in two-dimensional space raises serious problems for a straightforward string interpretation of the model if fields corresponding to excitations of both open and closed strings are involved.

Interrater variability of sleep stage scorings is a well-known phenomenon. The SIESTA project offered the opportunity to analyse interrater reliability (IRR) between experienced scorers from eight European sleep laboratories within a large sample of patients with different (sleep) disorders: depression, general anxiety disorder with and without non-organic insomnia, Parkinson's disease, period limb movements in sleep and sleep apnoea. The results were based on 196 recordings from 98 patients (73 males: 52.3 +/- 12.1 years and 25 females: 49.5 +/- 11.9 years) for which two independent expert scorings from two different laboratories were available. Cohen's kappa was used to evaluate the IRR on the basis of epochs and intraclass correlation was used to analyse the agreement on quantitative sleep parameters. The overall level of agreement when five different stages were distinguished was kappa = 0.6816 (76.8%), which in terms of kappa reflects a 'substantial' agreement (Landis and Koch, 1977). For different groups of patients kappa values varied from 0.6138 (Parkinson's disease) to 0.8176 (generalized anxiety disorder). With regard to (sleep) stages, the IRR was highest for rapid eye movement (REM), followed by Wake, slow-wave sleep (SWS), non-rapid eye movement 2 (NREM2) and NREM1. The results of regression analysis showed that age and sex only had a statistically significant effect on kappa when the (sleep) stages are considered separately. For NREM2 and SWS a statistically significant decrease of IRR with age has been observed and the IRR for SWS was lower for males than for females. These variations of IRR most probably reflect changes of the sleep electroencephalography (EEG) with age and gender.

This study compared the intensity dependence of the auditory evoked N1 and N1m components in 10 healthy subjects. The evoked responses were recorded simultaneously at 33 channels for the auditory evoked potentials (AEP) and with a 37-channel magnetometer for the auditory evoked fields (AEF). They were satisfactorily modeled by a tangential and a radial dipole per hemisphere for the N1 component and a tangential dipole in the left hemisphere for the N1m component. The tangential dipoles showed different dipole characteristics. The amplitude of the AEP rose significantly with increasing stimulus intensity whereas the amplitudes of the AEF tended to plateau between the highest intensities. The magnetic dipole shifted to the surface of the skull with higher stimulus intensity whereas the electric tangential dipole moved to the center of the skull. The latencies decreased with increasing stimulus intensity.

It was the aim of the present study 1) to investigate how many cortical activity maxima of scalp-recorded P300 are detected by Low Resolution Electromagentic Tomography (LORETA) when analyses are performed with high time-resolution, 2) to see if the resulting LORETA-solution is in accordance with intracortical recordings as reported by others and 3) to compare the given pattern of cortical activation maxima in the P300-timeframe between schizophrenic patients and normal controls. Current density analysis was performed in 3-D Talairach space with high time resolution i.e. in 6 ms steps. This was done during an auditory choice reaction paradigm separately for normal subjects and schizophrenic patients with subsequent group comparisons. In normal subjects, a sequence of at least seven cortical activation maxima was found between 240-420ms poststimulus: the prefrontal cortex, anterior or medial cingulum, posterior cingulum, parietal cortex, temporal lobe, prefrontal cortex, medial or anterior cingulum. Within the given limits of spatial resolution, this sequential maxima distribution largely met the expectations from reports on intracranial recordings and functional neuroimaging studies. However, localization accuracy was higher near the central midline than at lateral aspects of the brain. Schizophrenic patients less activated their cortex in a widespread area mainly in the left hemisphere including the prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulum and the temporal lobe. From these analyses and comparsions with intracranial recordings as reported by others, it is concluded that LORETA correctly localizes P300-related cortical activity maxima on the basis of 19 electrodes except for lateral cortical aspects which is most likely an edge-phenomenon. The data further suggest that the P300-deficit in schizophrenics involves an extended cortical network of the left hemisphere at several steps in time during the information processing stream.

The dehydrocoupling of the sterically hindered phosphine-borane adduct tBu(2)PH.BH(3) above 140 degrees C is catalyzed by the rhodium complexes [Rh(1,5-cod)(2)][OTf] or Rh(6)(CO)(16) to give the four-membered chain tBu(2)PH-BH(2)-tBu(2)P-BH(3) (1), which was isolated in 60% yield and characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. Thermolysis of 1 in the temperature range 175-180 degrees C led to partial decomposition and the formation of tBu(2)PH.BH(3). When the dehydrocoupling of tBu(2)PH.BH(3) was performed in the presence of [[Rh(mu-Cl)(1,5-cod)](2)] or RhCl(3) hydrate, the chlorinated compound tBu(2)PH-BH(2)-tBu(2)P-BH(2)Cl (2) was formed which could not be obtained free of 1. To evaluate efficacy of a 9.1% (w/w) imidacloprid solution, applied topically, to remove fleas from dogs and the duration of residual flea control when dogs were exposed to continuing flea infestation.32 adult mixed-breed dogs.Dogs were allocated to 4 groups of 8 dogs each; dogs of 3 groups received a single dose of imidacloprid, and those of the fourth group received excipient. Each dog was infested with 100 adult fleas on study days -3, -1, 6, 13, 20, 27, and 33. Treatments were applied on day 0. Each dog was examined for live fleas on days -2, 1, 7, 14, 21, 28, and 34. Posttreatment efficacy was determined by comparing the mean number of live fleas remaining on the treated dogs with the mean number of live fleas remaining on the control dogs.All 3 imidacloprid dosages provided flea controlor = 96.9% one day after treatment. Maximal efficacy of all 3 dosages (99.1 to 100%) was observed at 7 days after treatment. Flea control with 3.75 mg of imidacloprid/kg of body weight ranged from 94.4 to 96.9% for days 14 to 28 and decreased to 91.6% by 34 days after treatment. Flea control with 7.5 and 10.0 mg of imidacloprid/kg was 97.8 to 100% through day 28. At day 34, dosages of 7.5 and 10.0 mg of imidacloprid/kg were 97.6 and 96.9% efficacious, respectively.7.5 or 10.0 mg of imidacloprid/kg are equivalent and superior to 3.75 mg/kg for flea control over the course of a 34 day posttreatment period.Monthly imidacloprid application of 7.5 to 10 mg/kg will rapidly kill existing and reinfesting flea infestations on dogs and break the flea life cycle by killing adult fleas before egg production begins.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) frequently causes neurological dysfunction and is abundantly expressed in the central nervous system (CNS) of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients with HIV encephalitis or myelopathy. The virus is found mostly in cells of the monocyte-macrophage lineage within the CNS, but the possibility of infection of other glial cells has been raised. Therefore, the effects of different HIV-1 and HIV-2 strains were studied in primary cultures of adult human brain containing microglial cells, the resident CNS macrophages, and astrocytes. These cultures could be productively infected with macrophage-adapted HIV-1 isolates but not with T lymphocyte-adapted HIV-1 isolates or two HIV-2 isolates. As determined with a triple-label procedure, primary astrocytes did not express HIV gag antigens and remained normal throughout the 3-week course of infection. In contrast, virus replicated in neighboring microglial cells, often leading to their cell fusion and death. The death of microglial cells, which normally serve immune functions in the CNS, may be a key factor in the pathogenesis of AIDS encephalitis or myelopathy.
