1. Improvement in output power assessment by wind turbine power curve modeling based on data mining

Abstract: The accurate assessment of wind turbine output power is crucial in the process of sizing wind farms. Typically, this assessment is based on the manufacturer’s characteristic power curve, which relates wind speed to power output. However, the manufacturer’s power curve is often an idealized representation that may not accurately reflect the actual power output of the turbine under real-world conditions. To address this limitation, various techniques have been employed to develop more precise power curves, including curve fitting, artificial intelligence, probabilistic models, and Gaussian processes. This paper introduces a novel method for modeling the power curve that takes into account the specific conditions at the wind turbine’s location. The method involves transforming wind speed data into a graph that resembles the phase space commonly used in statistical mechanics. By applying the k-means algorithm to this phase space, clusters of wind speeds can be identified. Furthermore, the corresponding clusters of wind turbine output power can be determined based on the identified wind speed clusters. These clusters of power data provide valuable information for constructing a more accurate power curve using an adjustment function. By utilizing this method, the authors demonstrate a significant improvement in the accuracy of power output estimation compared to relying solely on the manufacturer’s power curve. The proposed approach considers the unique characteristics of the wind speed data and incorporates them into the modeling process, resulting in a more reliable representation of the turbine’s power output. This advancement represents a significant step forward in optimizing the sizing of wind farms and ensuring their efficient operation.

Abstract: The PSI Positron Production (P^{3} or P-cubed) experiment is a e^{+} source and capture system with the potential to increase by an order of magnitude the state-of-the-art e^{+} yield normalized to the drive linac energy, a highly desirable goal for future colliders. The experiment is framed in the FCC-ee injector study and will be hosted at SwissFEL, located at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. This paper presents the P^{3} project at an advanced stage, with an emphasis on a capture system featuring a novel e^{+} matching device based on high-temperature superconducting solenoids, followed by two large aperture rf cavities surrounded by normal-conducting solenoids. The diagnostics design is also introduced, including monitors of charge, energy spectrum, and bunch-by-bunch longitudinal profile simultaneously for secondary e^{+} and e^{-}. The last chapter of the text overviews the currently ongoing installation at SwissFEL, including the beam transfer line, rf network, radiation protection, and other relevant activities toward the operation with e^{+} in the coming years.

Abstract: Abstract Background Normofractionated radiation regimes for definitive prostate cancer treatment usually extend over 7–8 weeks. Recently, moderate hypofractionation with doses per fraction between 2.2 and 4 Gy has been shown to be safe and feasible with oncologic non-inferiority compared to normofractionation. Radiobiologic considerations lead to the assumption that prostate cancer might benefit in particular from hypofractionation in terms of tumor control and toxicity. First data related to ultrahypofractionation demonstrate that the overall treatment time can be reduced to 5–7 fractions with single doses > 6 Gy safely, even with simultaneous focal boosting of macroscopic tumor(s). With MR-guided linear accelerators (MR-linacs) entering clinical routine, invasive fiducial implantations become unnecessary. The aim of the multicentric SMILE study is to evaluate the use of MRI-guided stereotactic radiotherapy for localized prostate cancer in 5 fractions regarding safety and feasibility. Methods The study is designed as a prospective, one-armed, two-stage, multi-center phase-II-trial with 68 patients planned. Low- and intermediate-risk localized prostate cancer patients will be eligible for the study as well as early high-risk patients (cT3a and/or Gleason Score ≤ 8 and/or PSA ≤ 20 ng/ml) according to d’Amico. All patients will receive definitive MRI-guided stereotactic radiation therapy with a total dose of 37.5 Gy in 5 fractions (single dose 7.5 Gy) on alternating days. A focal simultaneous integrated boost to MRI-defined tumor(s) up to 40 Gy can optionally be applied. The primary composite endpoint includes the assessment of urogenital or gastrointestinal toxicity ≥ grade 2 or treatment-related discontinuation of therapy. The use of MRI-guided radiotherapy enables online plan adaptation and intrafractional gating to ensure optimal target volume coverage and protection of organs at risk. Discussion With moderate hypofractionation being the standard in definitive radiation therapy for localized prostate cancer at many institutions, ultrahypofractionation could be the next step towards reducing treatment time without compromising oncologic outcomes and toxicities. MRI-guided radiotherapy could qualify as an advantageous tool as no invasive procedures have to precede in therapeutic workflows. Furthermore, MRI guidance combined with gating and plan adaptation might be essential in order to increase treatment effectivity and reduce toxicity at the same time.

Abstract: Abstract The TOTEM experiment at the LHC has performed the first measurement at $$\sqrt{s} = 13\,\mathrm{TeV}$$ s=13TeV of the $$\rho $$ ρ parameter, the real to imaginary ratio of the nuclear elastic scattering amplitude at $$t=0$$ t=0 , obtaining the following results: $$\rho = 0.09 \pm 0.01$$ ρ=0.09±0.01 and $$\rho = 0.10 \pm 0.01$$ ρ=0.10±0.01 , depending on different physics assumptions and mathematical modelling. The unprecedented precision of the $$\rho $$ ρ measurement, combined with the TOTEM total cross-section measurements in an energy range larger than $$10\,\mathrm{TeV}$$ 10TeV (from 2.76 to $$13\,\mathrm{TeV}$$ 13TeV ), has implied the exclusion of all the models classified and published by COMPETE. The $$\rho $$ ρ results obtained by TOTEM are compatible with the predictions, from other theoretical models both in the Regge-like framework and in the QCD framework, of a crossing-odd colourless 3-gluon compound state exchange in the t-channel of the proton–proton elastic scattering. On the contrary, if shown that the crossing-odd 3-gluon compound state t-channel exchange is not of importance for the description of elastic scattering, the $$\rho $$ ρ value determined by TOTEM would represent a first evidence of a slowing down of the total cross-section growth at higher energies. The very low-|t| reach allowed also to determine the absolute normalisation using the Coulomb amplitude for the first time at the LHC and obtain a new total proton–proton cross-section measurement $$\sigma _{\mathrm{tot}} = (110.3 \pm 3.5)\,\mathrm{mb}$$ σtot=(110.3±3.5)mb , completely independent from the previous TOTEM determination. Combining the two TOTEM results yields $$\sigma _{\mathrm{tot}} = (110.5 \pm 2.4)\,\mathrm{mb}$$ σtot=(110.5±2.4)mb .

7. Phase advance constraint in K modulation for precise β-function determination

Abstract: A precise determination of the β function at different locations of an accelerator is essential to allow accurate optics correction and to ensure high machine performance. The β function can only be measured directly at locations where beam position monitors are installed. For other locations, we rely on a K-modulation technique. However, this technique presents some limitations resulting in imprecise β values when the phase advance between the modulated quadrupole and the observation point is separated by 90°. To mitigate these limitations, we have introduced the same phase advance as an additional constraint in the K-modulation algorithm. In this paper, the improvement of the β measurement uncertainty is quantified for different optics configurations for both, the LHC and the proton synchrotron (PS) booster. The new algorithm is used to reanalyze measured data during van der Meer scans for luminosity calibration providing significantly more accurate results than obtained previously. Moreover, in the PS booster, this improvement has also reduced the uncertainty of the β function at different locations of the machine.

Abstract: A hollow electron beam has been proposed as an active control tool to remove the beam halo from high-energy, high-current hadron or ion machines (such as the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider). To study the halo removal rate and assess the effect on the ion beam core, one of the two electron lenses in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider was changed from a Gaussian beam profile to a hollow profile. We describe the design and verification of the hollow electron beam parameters as well as the methods to minimize the hollow beam profile distortions, which can result in an ion beam emittance increase. The hollow beam alignment with the ion beam by using a backscattered electron detector has been demonstrated. Furthermore, experiments were carried out to explore the efficiency of the halo removal by scanning the current and inner radius of the hollow electron beam, which is pulsed either every turn or every nth turn. The effects of the hollow electron beam on the ion beam emittance and luminosity were also assessed experimentally by scanning the inner radius of the electron beam.

Abstract: Chronic liver disease and/or portal hypertension may be associated with one of the two pulmonary vascular complications: portopulmonary hypertension and hepatopulmonary syndrome. These pulmonary vascular disorders are notoriously underdiagnosed; however, they have a substantial negative impact on survival and require special attention in order to understand their diagnostic approach and to select the best therapeutic options. Portopulmonary hypertension results from excessive vasoconstriction, vascular remodeling, and proliferative and thrombotic events within the pulmonary circulation that lead to progressive right ventricular failure and ultimately to death. On the other hand, abnormal intrapulmonary vascular dilations, profound hypoxemia, and a wide alveolar-arterial gradient are the hallmarks of the hepatopulmonary syndrome, resulting in difficult-to-treat hypoxemia. The aim of this review is to summarize the latest pathophysiologic concepts, diagnostic approach, therapy, and prognosis of portopulmonary hypertension and hepatopulmonary syndrome, as well as to discuss the role of liver transplantation as a definitive therapy in selected patients with these conditions.

11. Enhanced and tunable optical quantum efficiencies from plasmon bandwidth engineering in bimetallic CoAg nanoparticles

Abstract: Plasmonic nanoparticles are amongst the most effective ways to resonantly couple optical energy into and out of nanometer sized volumes. However, controlling and/or tuning the transfer of this incident energy to the surrounding near and far field is one of the most interesting challenges in this area. Due to the dielectric properties of metallic silver (Ag), its nanoparticles have amongst the highest radiative quantum efficiencies (η), i.e., the ability to radiatively transfer the incident energy to the surrounding. Here we report the discovery that bimetallic nanoparticles of Ag made with immiscible and plasmonically weak Co metal can show comparable and/or even higher η values. The enhancement is a result of the narrowing of the plasmon bandwidth from these bimetal systems. The phenomenological explanation of this effect based on the dipolar approximation points to the reduction in radiative losses within the Ag nanoparticles when in contact with cobalt. This is also supported by a model of coupling between poor and good conductors based on the surface to volume ratio. This study presents a new type of bandwidth engineering, one based on using bimetal nanostructures, to tune and/or enhance the quality factor and quantum efficiency for near and far-field plasmonic applications.

Abstract: The CALICE Semi-Digital Hadron Calorimeter technological prototype completed in 2011 is a sampling calorimeter using Glass Resistive Plate Chamber (GRPC) detectors as the active medium. This technology is one of the two options proposed for the hadron calorimeter of the International Large Detector for the International Linear Collider. The prototype was exposed in 2015 to beams of muons, electrons, and pions of different energies at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The use of this technology for future experiments requires a reliable simulation of its response that can predict its performance. GEANT4 combined with a digitization algorithm was used to simulate the prototype. It describes the full path of the signal: showering, gas avalanches, charge induction, and hit triggering. The simulation was tuned using muon tracks and electromagnetic showers for accounting for detector inhomogeneity and tested on hadronic showers collected in the test beam. This publication describes developments of the digitization algorithm. It is used to predict the stability of the detector performance against various changes in the data-taking conditions, including temperature, pressure, magnetic field, GRPC width variations, and gas mixture variations. These predictions are confronted with test beam data and provide an attempt to explain the detector properties. The data-taking conditions such as temperature and potential detector inhomogeneities affect energy density measurements but have a small impact on detector efficiency., Comment: Version published in JINST

13. On the strong convergence of the Faedo-Galerkin approximations to a strong T-periodic solution of the torso-coupled bi-domain model

Abstract: In this paper, we investigate the convergence of the Faedo-Galerkin approximations, in a strong sense, to a strong T-periodic solution of the torso-coupled bidomain model where $T$ is the period of activation of the inner wall of heart. First, we define the torso-coupled bi-domain operator and prove some of its more important properties for our work. After, we define the abstract evolution system of equations associated with torso-coupled bidomain model and give the definition of strong solution. We prove that the Faedo-Galerkin's approximations have the regularity of a strong solution, and we find that some restrictions can be imposed over the initial conditions, so that this sequence of Faedo-Galerkin fully converge to a global strong solution of the Cauchy problem. Abstract: The CALICE Semi-Digital Hadronic CALorimeter (SDHCAL) is the first technological prototype in a family of high-granularity calorimeters developed by the CALICE Collaboration to equip the experiments of future lepton colliders. The SDHCAL is a sampling calorimeter using stainless steel for absorber and Glass Resistive Plate Chambers (GRPC) as a sensitive medium. The GRPC are read out by 1~cm $\times$ 1~cm pickup pads combined to a multi-threshold electronics. The prototype was exposed to hadron beams in both the CERN PS and the SPS beamlines in 2015 allowing the test of the SDHCAL in a large energy range from 3~GeV to 80~GeV. After introducing the method used to select the hadrons of our data and reject the muon and electron contamination, we present the energy reconstruction approach that we apply to the data collected from both beamlines and we discuss the response linearity and the energy resolution of the SDHCAL. The results obtained in the two beamlines confirm the excellent SDHCAL performance observed with the data collected with the same prototype in the SPS beamline in 2012. Abstract: The GALANTE optical photometric survey is observing the northern Galactic plane and some adjacent regions using seven narrow- and intermediate-filters, covering a total of 1618 square degrees. The survey has been designed with multiple exposure times and at least two different air masses per field to maximize its photometric dynamic range, comparable to that of Gaia, and ensure the accuracy of its photometric calibration. The goal is to reach at least 1% accuracy and precision in the seven bands for all stars brighter than AB magnitude 17 while detecting fainter stars with lower values of the signal-to-noise ratio.The main purposes of GALANTE are the identification and study of extinguished O+B+WR stars, the derivation of their extinction characteristics, and the cataloguing of F and G stars in the solar neighbourhood. Its data will be also used for a variety of other stellar studies and to generate a high-resolution continuum-free map of the H{\alpha} emission in the Galactic plane. Abstract: Decision-making for self-adaptation approaches need to address different challenges, including the quantification of the uncertainty of events that cannot be foreseen in advance and their effects, and dealing with conflicting objectives that inherently involve multi-objective decision making (e.g., avoiding costs vs. providing reliable service). To enable researchers to evaluate and compare decision-making techniques for self-adaptation, we present the RDMSim exemplar. RDMSim enables researchers to evaluate and compare techniques for decision-making under environmental uncertainty that support self-adaptation. The focus of the exemplar is on the domain problem related to Remote Data Mirroring, which gives opportunity to face the challenges described above. RDMSim provides probe and effector components for easy integration with external adaptation managers, which are associated with decision-making techniques and based on the MAPE-K loop. Abstract: A detailed investigation of hadronic interactions is performed using $\pi^-$-mesons with energies in the range 2--10 GeV incident on a high granularity silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter. The data were recorded at FNAL in 2008. The region in which the $\pi^-$-mesons interact with the detector material and the produced secondary particles are characterised using a novel track-finding algorithm that reconstructs tracks within hadronic showers in a calorimeter in the absence of a magnetic field. Abstract: We present a study of the response of the highly granular Digital Hadronic Calorimeter with steel absorbers, the Fe-DHCAL, to positrons, muons, and pions with momenta ranging from 2 to 60 GeV/c. Developed in the context of the CALICE collaboration, this hadron calorimeter utilises Resistive Plate Chambers as active media, interspersed with steel absorber plates. With a transverse granularity of $1\,\times\,1\,$cm$^{2}$ and a longitudinal segmentation of 38 layers, the calorimeter counted 350,208 readout channels, each read out with single-bit resolution (digital readout). The data were recorded in the Fermilab test beam in 2010-11. The analysis includes measurements of the calorimeter response and the energy resolution to positrons and muons, as well as detailed studies of various shower shape quantities. The results are compared to simulations based on Geant4, which utilise different electromagnetic and hadronic physics lists.

Abstract: The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a TeV-scale high-luminosity linear $e^+e^-$ collider under development at CERN. Following the CLIC conceptual design published in 2012, this report provides an overview of the CLIC project, its current status, and future developments. It presents the CLIC physics potential and reports on design, technology, and implementation aspects of the accelerator and the detector. CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in stages, at centre-of-mass energies of 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV, respectively. CLIC uses a two-beam acceleration scheme, in which 12 GHz accelerating structures are powered via a high-current drive beam. For the first stage, an alternative with X-band klystron powering is also considered. CLIC accelerator optimisation, technical developments and system tests have resulted in an increased energy efficiency (power around 170 MW) for the 380 GeV stage, together with a reduced cost estimate at the level of 6 billion CHF. The detector concept has been refined using improved software tools. Significant progress has been made on detector technology developments for the tracking and calorimetry systems. A wide range of CLIC physics studies has been conducted, both through full detector simulations and parametric studies, together providing a broad overview of the CLIC physics potential. Each of the three energy stages adds cornerstones of the full CLIC physics programme, such as Higgs width and couplings, top-quark properties, Higgs self-coupling, direct searches, and many precision electroweak measurements. The interpretation of the combined results gives crucial and accurate insight into new physics, largely complementary to LHC and HL-LHC. The construction of the first CLIC energy stage could start by 2026. Abstract: The TOTEM experiment at the LHC has performed the first measurement at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV of the $\rho$ parameter, the real to imaginary ratio of the nuclear elastic scattering amplitude at $t=0$, obtaining the following results: $\rho = 0.09 \pm 0.01$ and $\rho = 0.10 \pm 0.01$, depending on different physics assumptions and mathematical modelling. The unprecedented precision of the $\rho$ measurement, combined with the TOTEM total cross-section measurements in an energy range larger than 10 TeV (from 2.76 to 13 TeV), has implied the exclusion of all the models classified and published by COMPETE. The $\rho$ results obtained by TOTEM are compatible with the predictions, from alternative theoretical models both in the Regge-like framework and in the QCD framework, of a colourless 3-gluon bound state exchange in the $t$-channel of the proton-proton elastic scattering. On the contrary, if shown that the 3-gluon bound state $t$-channel exchange is not of importance for the description of elastic scattering, the $\rho$ value determined by TOTEM would represent a first evidence of a slowing down of the total cross-section growth at higher energies. The very low-$|t|$ reach allowed also to determine the absolute normalisation using the Coulomb amplitude for the first time at the LHC and obtain a new total proton-proton cross-section measurement $\sigma_{tot} = 110.3 \pm 3.5$ mb, completely independent from the previous TOTEM determination. Abstract: Chapter 5 in High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) : Preliminary Design Report. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is one of the largest scientific instruments ever built. Since opening up a new energy frontier for exploration in 2010, it has gathered a global user community of about 7,000 scientists working in fundamental particle physics and the physics of hadronic matter at extreme temperature and density. To sustain and extend its discovery potential, the LHC will need a major upgrade in the 2020s. This will increase its luminosity (rate of collisions) by a factor of five beyond the original design value and the integrated luminosity (total collisions created) by a factor ten. The LHC is already a highly complex and exquisitely optimised machine so this upgrade must be carefully conceived and will require about ten years to implement. The new configuration, known as High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), will rely on a number of key innovations that push accelerator technology beyond its present limits. Among these are cutting-edge 11-12 tesla superconducting magnets, compact superconducting cavities for beam rotation with ultra-precise phase control, new technology and physical processes for beam collimation and 300 metre-long high-power superconducting links with negligible energy dissipation. Abstract: Neurocysticercosis is an infection of the nervous system caused by Taenia solium. It is the most important human parasitic neurological disease and a common cause of epilepsy in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, representing enormous costs for anticonvulsants, medical resources and lost production. Neurocysticercosis is a human-to-human infection, acquired by the faecal-enteric route from carriers of intestinal T. solium, most often in areas with deficient sanitation. Intestinal tapeworms cause few symptoms, but adult taeniae carried by humans release large numbers of infective eggs and are extremely contagious. Ingestion of poorly cooked pig meat infested with T. solium larvae results in intestinal taeniosis but not neurocysticercosis. With a view to hastening the control of taeniosis and neurocysticercosis we propose that neurocysticercosis be declared an international reportable disease. New cases of neurocysticercosis should be reported by physicians or hospital administrators to their health ministries. An epidemiological intervention could then be launched to interrupt the chain of transmission by: (1) searching for, treating and reporting the sources of contagion, i.e. human carriers of tapeworms; (2) identifying and treating other exposed contacts; (3) providing health education on parasite transmission and improvement of hygiene and sanitary conditions; and (4) enforcing meat inspection policies and limiting the animal reservoir by treatment of pigs. We believe that the first step required to solve the problem of neurocysticercosis is to implement appropriate surveillance mechanisms under the responsibility of ministries of health. Compulsory notification also has the major advantage of providing accurate quantification of the incidence and prevalence of neurocysticercosis at regional level, thus permitting the rational use of resources in eradication campaigns.

Abstract: The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a multi-TeV high-luminosity linear e+e- collider under development. For an optimal exploitation of its physics potential, CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in a staged approach with three centre-of-mass energy stages ranging from a few hundred GeV up to 3 TeV. The first stage will focus on precision Standard Model physics, in particular Higgs and top-quark measurements. Subsequent stages will focus on measurements of rare Higgs processes, as well as searches for new physics processes and precision measurements of new states, e.g. states previously discovered at LHC or at CLIC itself. In the 2012 CLIC Conceptual Design Report, a fully optimised 3 TeV collider was presented, while the proposed lower energy stages were not studied to the same level of detail. This report presents an updated baseline staging scenario for CLIC. The scenario is the result of a comprehensive study addressing the performance, cost and power of the CLIC accelerator complex as a function of centre-of-mass energy and it targets optimal physics output based on the current physics landscape. The optimised staging scenario foresees three main centre-of-mass energy stages at 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV for a full CLIC programme spanning 22 years. Abstract: The present note relies on the recently published conceptual design report of the LHeC and extends the first contribution to the European strategy debate in emphasising the role of the LHeC to complement and complete the high luminosity LHC programme. The brief discussion therefore focuses on the importance of high precision PDF and $\alpha_s$ determinations for the physics beyond the Standard Model (GUTs, SUSY, Higgs). Emphasis is also given to the importance of high parton density phenomena in nuclei and their relevance to the heavy ion physics programme at the LHC.

Abstract: This document provides a brief overview of the recently published report on the design of the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), which comprises its physics programme, accelerator physics, technology and main detector concepts. The LHeC exploits and develops challenging, though principally existing, accelerator and detector technologies. This summary is complemented by brief illustrations of some of the highlights of the physics programme, which relies on a vastly extended kinematic range, luminosity and unprecedented precision in deep inelastic scattering. Illustrations are provided regarding high precision QCD, new physics (Higgs, SUSY) and electron-ion physics. The LHeC is designed to run synchronously with the LHC in the twenties and to achieve an integrated luminosity of O(100) fb$^{-1}$. It will become the cleanest high resolution microscope of mankind and will substantially extend as well as complement the investigation of the physics of the TeV energy scale, which has been enabled by the LHC.

Abstract: The physics programme and the design are described of a new collider for particle and nuclear physics, the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), in which a newly built electron beam of 60 GeV, up to possibly 140 GeV, energy collides with the intense hadron beams of the LHC. Compared to HERA, the kinematic range covered is extended by a factor of twenty in the negative four-momentum squared, $Q^2$, and in the inverse Bjorken $x$, while with the design luminosity of $10^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ the LHeC is projected to exceed the integrated HERA luminosity by two orders of magnitude. The physics programme is devoted to an exploration of the energy frontier, complementing the LHC and its discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model with high precision deep inelastic scattering measurements. These are designed to investigate a variety of fundamental questions in strong and electroweak interactions. The physics programme also includes electron-deuteron and electron-ion scattering in a $(Q^2, 1/x)$ range extended by four orders of magnitude as compared to previous lepton-nucleus DIS experiments for novel investigations of neutron's and nuclear structure, the initial conditions of Quark-Gluon Plasma formation and further quantum chromodynamic phenomena. The LHeC may be realised either as a ring-ring or as a linac-ring collider. Optics and beam dynamics studies are presented for both versions, along with technical design considerations on the interaction region, magnets and further components, together with a design study for a high acceptance detector. Civil engineering and installation studies are presented for the accelerator and the detector. The LHeC can be built within a decade and thus be operated while the LHC runs in its high-luminosity phase. It thus represents a major opportunity for progress in particle physics exploiting the investment made in the LHC.

36. Dry tobacco leaves: an in vivo and in silico approach to the consequences of occupational exposure

Abstract: Exposure of tobacco workers handling dried tobacco leaves has been linked to an increased risk of toxicity and respiratory illness due to the presence of nicotine and other chemicals. This study aimed to evaluate the DNA damage caused by the exposure of tobacco growers during the dry leaf classification process and the relation to cellular mechanisms. A total of 86 individuals participated in the study, divided into a group exposed to dry tobacco (n = 44) and a control group (n = 42). Genotoxicity was evaluated using the alkaline comet assay and lymphocyte micronucleus (MN) assay (CBMN-Cyt), and measurement of telomere length. The levels of oxidative and nitrosative stress were evaluated through the formation of thiobarbituric acid reactive species, and nitric oxide levels, respectively. The inorganic elements were measured in the samples using particle-induced X-ray emission method. The combination of variables was demonstrated through principal component analysis and the interactions were expanded through systems biology. Comet assay, MN, death cells, thiobarbituric acid reactive species, and nitrosative stress showed a significant increase for all exposed groups in relation to the control. Telomere length showed a significant decrease for exposed women and total exposed group in relation to men and control groups, respectively. Bromine (Br) and rubidium (Rb) in the exposed group presented higher levels than control groups. Correlations between nitrate and apoptosis; Br and MN and necrosis; and Rb and telomeres; besides age and DNA damage and death cells were observed. The systems biology analysis demonstrated that tobacco elements can increase the nuclear translocation of NFKB dimers inducing HDAC2 expression, which, associated with BRCA1 protein, can potentially repress transcription of genes that promote DNA repair. Dry tobacco workers exposed to dry leaves and their different agents showed DNA damage by different mechanisms, including redox imbalance.

37. A comparison of incidental and symptomatic unruptured brain arteriovenous malformations in children

Abstract: OBJECTIVE Patients with unruptured brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) may present with headaches, seizures, and/or neurological deficits. A smaller number of cases may be discovered incidentally. These lesions remain incompletely understood due to their sparse reporting. Herein, the authors describe the largest series to date comparing the presentation, angioarchitecture, and management of incidental versus symptomatic unruptured AVMs in children. METHODS The authors performed a retrospective analysis of patients who presented with brain AVMs from 1998 to 2022 at the University of California, San Francisco. Inclusion criteria were age ≤ 18 years at the time of presentation and an angiographically proven unruptured AVM that had been diagnosed postnatally. RESULTS Of 76 children with unruptured AVMs, 66 (86.8%) presented with headaches, seizures, and/or neurological deficit. Ten AVMs (13.1%) were incidentally discovered through unrelated disease workup (50%), cranial trauma (40%), or research study participation (10%). Compared with patients with symptomatic unruptured AVMs, patients with incidental unruptured AVMs had a smaller mean ± SD maximum nidus diameter (2.82 ± 1.1 vs 3.98 ± 1.52 cm, p = 0.025) and fewer had deep venous drainage (20% of patients vs 61%, p = 0.036). They also presented at an earlier age (10 ± 5.2 vs 13.5 ± 4 years, p = 0.043) and with longer duration to first treatment (541 ± 922 vs 196 ± 448 days, p = 0.005). During the observation period, 1 patient developed recurring headaches and demonstrated AVM nidus growth. Four AVMs greater than 3 cm in size or in a deep location were treated with radiosurgery. Six other AVMs were treated with resection, with 2 receiving preoperative embolization. Eight AVMs (80%) were obliterated on last follow-up. Postprocedural complications included 2 transient neurological deficits after resection and 1 case of delayed seizure development after radiosurgery. The mean follow-up period was 5.7 ± 5.7 years without any hemorrhage episodes. CONCLUSIONS A substantial proportion of pediatric patients with unruptured AVMs are discovered incidentally. With earlier presentation and more elementary angioarchitecture than symptomatic unruptured AVMs, these incidental lesions provide a snapshot into the natural history of AVM before symptom development or rupture.

Abstract: El propósito fue comprender en qué medida los Proyecto de Inversión Pública realizados se relacionan en el desarrollo de las actividades turísticas en la Provincia de Huánuco - 2015. El método fue cuantitativa, aplicada, deductiva, de diseño no experimental- corte transversal, la muestra se conformó por 167 PIP de la zona estudio. Se tuvo en cuenta los siguientes instrumentos: las fichas de registros, referencia electrónica y la observación. La validación estadística se dio mediante el alfa de Cronbach, con 96 % de confiabilidad. Del total de PIP realizados, según el grado de evaluación de influencia del desarrollo del turismo, se presenta un grado bajo y medio. Del total de proyectos, según las evaluaciones del grado de influencia en el desarrollo del turismo, se obtuvo un grado medio y alto. Del total de proyectos ejecutados por los gobiernos locales, según la evaluación del grado de influencia en el desarrollo del turismo, tienen un grado medio y alto. Se concluye que los PIP influyen en el crecimiento de las actividades turísticas.

Abstract: The production of transuranium isotopes has been demonstrated at the Isotope Separation and ACceleration (ISAC) facility. In particular a laser-ionized $^{239}$Pu beam, extracted from a uranium carbide target, was investigated. The experimental work was complemented by GEANT4 simulations, modelling the impact of secondary particles on the creation of transuranium isotopes through inelastic nuclear reactions. Theoretical production cross sections were derived and compared to experimental results, leading to a discussion on boundary conditions for the release of neptunium and plutonium from ISAC uranium carbide targets.

41. Impacto pronóstico de la mielofibrosis en pacientes con síndromes mielodisplásicos y leucemia mielomonocítica crónica

Abstract: La mielofibrosis (MF) se observa en el 10-20% de los pacientes con síndrome mielodisplásico (SMD). Su presencia es reconocida como un hallazgo histológico adverso asociado a curso agresivo, fallo medular temprano, sobrevida acortada y evolución leucémica. El objetivo fue examinar la influencia de la MF (MF ≥1) en la sobrevida global (SG) y su asociación con variables clínicas e histopatológicas. Se identificaron 468 pacientes con SMD incluidos en el Registro Argentino de SMD de 2007 a 2017. La mediana de SG del subgrupo MF ≥1 fue de 20,1 meses (IC 95%: 10,1-30,0) versus 67,6 meses (IC 95% 45,1-90,3) del subgrupo MF-0 (p2 (HR 2,07, 95% IC 1,44-2,96; p5% (HR 2,94, IC 95% 2,06-4,20; p3 (HR 2,17; IC 95%: 1,48-3,19; p1000 ug/L (OR 3,41; p= 0,006) y la localización eritroide atípica (OR 2,65; p=0,004) se asociaron significativamente con la presencia de MF ≥1. Los resultados destacan la presencia de MF ≥1 como un factor pronóstico adverso para la supervivencia en SMD, asociado con hiperferritinemia y alteración de la localización de la progenie eritroide en la MO.

42. Ethical Practices and Organizational Sustainability: A Three Dimensional Approach

Abstract: Ethical practices as viewed on the three ethics approaches can drive leader and employee involvement in sustainability-related behaviors. This study sought to determine the ethical practices of employees and leaders of a state university in the province of Laguna Philippines as well as the institution’s sustainability. Descriptive research was conducted through a survey administered to sixty-six (66) faculty members. The study also investigated if there are differences in the ethical practices of the leaders and employees when grouped according to profile factors as well as looked into the relationship between ethical practices and organization sustainability. The study revealed that the leaders and employees highly put into action the ethical practices in relation to Kantian, Virtue, and Care Ethics. Moreover, the level of sustainability exercised by the institution in terms of its contribution to society and the environment is perceived to be highly practiced. Furthermore, it was concluded that there is no significant difference in the ethical practices of the leaders as perceived by the faculty members. A significant relationship between ethical practices and organizational sustainability was established. As such, continuous review of the ethical code of conduct and laying down of procedures in carrying out ethical issues are emphasized by the results.

Abstract: Se realizó un estudio del efecto de 3 sustitutos del cemento portland en la densidad relativa, la resistencia a la compresión y la absorción inicial (capilaridad), en blocks de concreto vibrocompactados. El cemento Portland es sustituido por tres diferentes constituyentes de la mezcla, en diferentes proporciones: a) 10% por ceniza volante, b) por 30% de cemento Impercem®, y c) el uso de un aditivo auto-curable. Los resultados indican que la ceniza volante, proporcionan un beneficio de resistencia a la compresión, sin embargo, los valores de absorción son inferiores a la norma. 46. Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Neurosurgical Transfers: A Single Tertiary Center Study

Abstract: Interfacility transfers represent a large proportion of neurosurgical admissions to tertiary care centers each year. In this study, the authors examined the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the number of transfers, timing of transfers, demographic profile of transfer patients, and clinical outcomes including rates of surgical intervention.A retrospective review of neurosurgical transfer patients at a single tertiary center was performed. Patients transferred from April to November 2020 (the "COVID Era") were compared with an institutional database of transfer patients collected before the COVID-19 pandemic (the "Pre-COVID Era"). During the COVID Era, both emergent and nonemergent neurosurgical services had resumed. A comparison of demographic and clinical factors between the 2 cohorts was performed.A total of 674 patients were included in the study (331 Pre-COVID and 343 COVID-Era patients). Overall, there was no change in the average monthly number of transfers (P = 0.66) or in the catchment area of referral hospitals. However, COVID-Era patients were more likely to be uninsured (1% vs. 4%), had longer transfer times (COVID vs. Pre-COVID Era: 18 vs. 9 hours; P0.001), required higher rates of surgical intervention (63% vs. 50%, P = 0.001), had higher rates of spine pathology (17% vs. 10%), and less frequently were admitted to the intensive care unit (34% vs. 52%, P0.001). Overall, COVID-Era patients did not experience delays to surgical intervention (3.1 days vs. 3.6 days, P = 0.2). When analyzing the subgroup of COVID-Era patients, COVID infection status did not impact the time of transfer or rates of operation, although COVID-infected patients experienced a longer time to surgery after admission (14 vs. 2.9 days, P0.001).The COVID-19 pandemic did not reduce the number of monthly transfers, operation rates, or catchment area for transfer patients. Transfer rates of uninsured patients increased during the COVID Era, potentially reflecting changes in access to community neurosurgery care. Shorter time to surgery seen in COVID-Era patients possibly reflects institutional policies that improved operating room efficiency to compensate for surgical backlogs. COVID status affeted time to surgery, reflecting the preoperative care that these patients require before intervention.

Abstract: Nanotechnology approaches for improving the delivery efficiency of chemicals and molecular cargoes in plants through plant biorecognition mechanisms remain relatively unexplored. We developed targeted carbon-based nanomaterials as tools for precise chemical delivery (carbon dots, CDs) and gene delivery platforms (single-walled carbon nanotubes, SWCNTs) to chloroplasts, key organelles involved in efforts to improve plant photosynthesis, assimilation of nutrients, and delivery of agrochemicals. A biorecognition approach of coating the nanomaterials with a rationally designed chloroplast targeting peptide improved the delivery of CDs with molecular baskets (TP-β-CD) for delivery of agrochemicals and of plasmid DNA coated SWCNT (TP-pATV1-SWCNT) from 47% to 70% and from 39% to 57% of chloroplasts in leaves, respectively. Abstract: Coal and its by-products are complex mixtures which can have an impact on the environment and human health. Complex mixtures of coal and its by-products have an impact on the environment and human health. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the mutagenic effect of coal, fly ash and bottom ash using the Allium cepaand Salmonella/microsome test, and to correlate the results with the organic and inorganic components detected in the samples. This study aimed to evaluate the mutagenic effect of coal, fly ash and bottom ash using Allium cepa and the Salmonella/microsome test, and to correlate the results with organic and inorganic components detected in the samples. The samples were obtained in the Presidente Medici power plant at Candiota (Brazil). The samples did not show cytotoxicity in the A. cepatest or a mutagenic effect in the Salmonella/microsome test. Nevertheless, we observed an increase in micronucleus frequency for coal and bottom ash exposure. Different polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and inorganic elements were detected and related to the mutagenicity results. The study demonstrates the need for preventive measures to protect coal and ash handling to avoid possible damage to health.
