Abstract

Absolute verification of system on chip (SoC) has become infeasible due to the huge number of chip-level scenarios to cover. System level verification validates the integration of independently-verified components such as cores, peripherals, caches and memories. Some of the most elusive system level bugs can only be detected by scenarios that exercise several components, each in a different configuration. This paper presents a methodology for SoC system level verification, comprised of high level software that simultaneously exercises multiple hardware components. It consists of a light operating system which schedules threads for non-preemptive interleaved runs. Each thread complies with a uniform structure, and activates a specific functionality of the system. The interaction of multiple threads allows for realistic scenarios, testing bus traffic stress, multiplexing, and state machines, reaching unanticipated corner-cases. The OS includes a run time constraint solver for randomly selecting parameters for peripheral configuration. Similar capabilities require dedicated testbenches such as Vera or e which lack compilers and thus cannot be applied to silicon. The described framework is not dependent on a specific tool, but based on C, therefore compiled to chip. Reusability over project life-cycle is achieved by having the same test-cases run on simulation, emulation and silicon, allowing comparison of test results. A simulation speed-up of over 100times is achieved, by replacing RTL core with stub, compiling application code to the host machine, and using an API for the interaction of the design and application. This methodology was applied to the new Quad-Core MSC8144 supporting a very high I/O bandwidth and providing an optimal DSP solution for wireline/wireless infrastructure applications. The same methodology was used in simulation, emulation and silicon modes. It led to high coverage of system level scenarios, and discovery of system level bugs which could have taken much longer to be found by other methodologies

The electrical and physical properties of a sequentially deposited Ti/TiN/AlSiCu metallization structure are described. Emphasis is on the barrier properties of this multilayer film structure as function of the thickness, stoichiometry, resistance uniformity, bulk resistivity, stress, and deposition temperature. The leakage current was measured to be less than 100 pA before and after thermal stressing in the 450 degrees C to 550 degrees C range. Deposition temperature was found to have the greatest effect on film properties. Characterization results were verified on SRAM production lots. Barrier integrity was found to be stable at temperatures up to 550 degrees C. >

Abstract

We present new data obtained by 23Na nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, which can distinguish free intracellular sodium from cell-bound sodium, showing that the intracellular concentration of Na+ the halophilic eubacterium Vibrio costicola is only 5 to 20% of that in the extracellular medium. Previous methods could not distinguish free intracellular Na+ from that bound to cell structures, and it was believed that in halophilic eubacteria the total monovalent cation concentration inside matched that of the NaCl outside. Information obtained by the newer technology raises fundamental questions about the ways in which these organisms and others which live in hypersaline environments function and cope with osmotic stress.

The synthesis and uptake of intracellular organic osmolytes (compatible solutes) were studied with the aid of natural abundance 13C NMR spectroscopy in two unrelated, moderately halophilic eubacteria: Ba1 and Vibrio costicola. In minimal media containing 1 M NaCl, both microorganisms synthesized the cyclic amino acid, 1,4,5,6-tetrahydro-2-methyl-4-pyrimidinecarboxylic acid (trivial name, ectoine) as the predominant compatible solute, provided that no glycine betaine was present in the growth medium. When, however, the minimal medium was supplemented with glycine betaine or the latter was a component of a complex medium, it was transported into the cells and the accumulating glycine betaine replaced the ectoine. In Ba1, grown in a defined medium containing glucose as the single carbon source, ectoine could only be detected if the NaCl concentration in the medium was higher than 0.6 M; the ectoine content increased with the external salt concentration. At NaCl concentrations below 0.6 M, alpha,alpha-trehalose was the major organic osmolyte. The concentration of ectoine reached its peak during the exponential phase and declined subsequently. In contrast, the accumulation of glycine betaine continued during the stationary phase. The results presented here indicate that, at least in the two microorganisms studied, ectoine plays an important role in haloadaptation.

2,4-Disubstituted butyrolactones and 2,4,6-trisubstituted-5,6 dihydro-4H-1,3-oxazines show similar features in their 1H and 13C- NMR spectra. Two geminal ring hydrogens of cis isomers give rise to a complex ABXY spectra when the substituent is alkyl or aryl. In spectra of trans isomers these patterns are degenerated. When R is OMe(in 4) or OCOMe (in 6) the difference in chemical shifts of geminal protons and vicinal coupling constants cannot be used for diagnosis. In 13C spectra ring carbons C-2 and C-3 in lactones and C-4 and C-5 in oxazine of trans isomers show a small but consistent shift to higher fields.

Abstract

Molecular reorientation in a solid propellane has been studied by NMR. T1 measurements led to a value of 7.5 ± 0.5 kcal/mole for the rotational activation energies. Linewidth and second moment measurements gave considerably higher results. The small distortion of the molecule from C3 symmetry in the solid state must betaken into account in calculating the second moment of the rotating molecule.

The surface properties of semiconductors can be measured by placing the sample in proximity to a surface acoustic wave delay line and applying a pulsed rf signal to the input. There will be time‐dependent changes in the attenuation constant of the delay line, in the acoustoelectric voltage, and changes in the convolution voltage (if the device is a convolver) all due to the varying surface properties of the semiconductor. Further information can be obtained by subjecting the semiconductor to a pulsed dc electric field, or a second large pulsed rf field, and also by exposing the semiconductor to different wavelengths of light and repeating the above experiments. Abstract

Energy distribution of surface states and majority-carriers capture cross section is determined using the surface-acoustic-wave (SAW) convolver. The semiconductor is placed a small distance above the SAW delay line, with a uniform air gap between the two media. A fast rise time dc pulse is applied across the semiconductor-delay line structure, and the resulting change in the SAW propagation loss is observed. The transient response of the SAW propagation loss represents the emission or trapping of majority carriers from surface states. From this transient response, the capture cross section and the concentration profile of the surface states are determined. The results obtained agree with the already known distribution of fast surface states; it is constant at the middle of the gap and increases towards the conduction band, whereas the capture cross section is constant in the middle of the gap and decreases toward the conduction band. This new SAW technique is simple, sensitive, and requires no contact to the semiconductor surface.

A fast rise time pulse of light is applied to the semiconductor surface through the piezoelectric substrate, and the resulting change in the semiconductor conductance is observed by the relaxation of the SAW propagation loss. This technique has the important advantage that no ohmic contact to the semiconductor is needed.

Abstract

The space charge coupled interaction of surface acoustic waves (SAW) propagating on a piezoelectric substrate with a semiconductor surface placed in proximity gives rise to SAW attenuation. As a result of nonlinearity, a d.c. acousto-electric voltage and a second-harmonic r.f. convolution voltage under certain circumstances are developed across the semiconductor. The spectral response of these parameters is used to determine the static and dynamic properties of the semiconductor surface. The existence of maxima and minima in the photo-enhanced convolution voltage, acousto-electric voltage and SAW attenuation is due to the corresponding structures in the photoconductivity. A comparison is made between the spectral response of these parameters for CdS to show that, at room temperature, the transverse acousto-electric voltage has greater sensitivity to photon absorption for subband gap illumination.

The spin-lattice relaxation time, T1, and the dipolar energy relaxation time, TD, were measured as a function of temperature. The materials studied were samples of anhydrous L-dipalmitoyl lecithin, DL-dipalmitoyl lecithin, L-dimyristoyl lecithin, DL-dimyristoyl lecithin and their monohydrates, and of anhydrous egg yolk lecithin. It is shown that TD is a much more sensitive parameter than T1 for the determination of the Chapman phase transition. Comparison between T1 and TD provides information about new types of slow molecular motions below and above the phase transition temperature. It is suggested that the relaxation mechanisms for T1 and TD in the gel phase are governed by segmental motion in the phospholipid molecule. A new metastable phase was detected in dimyristoyl lecithin monohydrates. This phase could only be detected from the dipolar energy relaxation times.

Abstract

The nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of aqueous solutions of three β-hydroxy carboxylic acids and some of their derivatives were measured as a function of the pH. The chemical shifts of the methylene hydrogens, adjacent to the carboxyl group, exhibit titration curves. The chemical shift between the two methylene hydrogens behaves differently in each compound, the most common behaviour being the occurrence of a minimum in the shift at pH ⋍ pK. The value of the spin—spin coupling constant changes only very slightly with the pH. The effect of added neutral salts and the variation of the temperature were also investigated in some of the acids. Qualitative conclusions concerning inter- and intramolecular hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions in these molecules were derived from the results.

Abstract

We have studied the motion of acetylene molecules in the solid phase by measuring the second moment of the NMR absorption line. The spectra were taken at various temperatures, from the melting point through the phase transition down to approximately the temperature of liquid nitrogen. It is believed that in the high-temperature phase the molecules reorient by a cooperative motion between eight equivalent positions. The motion suggested is consistent with far ir, X-ray, Raman and thermochemical data.

The wavelength dependence of the peak transverse acoustoelectric voltage and the surface acoustic wave attenuation determine the energy band and the locations of the surface states in the energy gap of GaAs. The dependence is explained by direct optical transition between the bands and optical transition from surface states. This method needs no contacts to the semiconductor surface, is simple, very sensitive, and accurate.

Electrical properties of GaAs epitaxial layer are studied by measuring the transverse surface acoustoelectric voltage, the attenuation of the surface wave when the semiconductor surface is depleted, and the time constant governing the return to the steady state condition of the delay line output after the semiconductor surface is accumulated. The spectral response of the attenuation and time constant is studied using a monochromator. The experimental results determine the uniformity and quality of the semiconductor epitaxial layer, the energy band, the distribution of surface states in the energy gap and the lifetime of surface states. A theory is developed for the acoustoelectric voltage when two carriers are present for better understanding of the experimental results when band-to-band transition is taking place. This method is simple, very sensitive, accurate, and needs no contact to the semiconductor surface. (Author)

Abstract

A surface acoustic wave (SAW) device is being developed for use in the non-destructive determination of the electronic properties of semiconductors. Some of the properties that can be determined by the technique are the bulk and surface conductivity, the location in the energy gap of traps, distribution of fast surface states, and interface states, majority carrier capture cross-section and storage times in the depletion layer. This characterization of the semiconductor could be performed at progressive stages of device fabrication thereby improving yield by identifying faulty processing steps. Some investigations have been conducted on silicon, ion-implanted silicon, gallium arsenide, indium arsenide, gallium phosphide and cadmium sulfide. The technique uses surface acoustic waves on a piezoelectric substrate. The electric field associated with the SAW interacts with free carriers of a semiconductor placed near the piezoelectric surface. The interaction generates detectable currents in the semiconductor and attenuates the SAW. Observing these effects while varying external parameters such as temperature, applied acoustic power, SAW frequency, semiconductor surface irradiation and bias voltage, the desired information is obtained. In this paper, this contactless technique is reviewed and some new results are presented in connection with the photoconductivity response time.

Abstract

The role of sodium in biological systems is quite important, this has been the main reason for the extensive investigations of sodium NMR in the last decade. A comprehensive review on the subject was recently published (1). We would like to emphasize here that the main reason for the determination of sodium NMR in the systems studied was its biological importance and not the vast information one can derive from the measurement. The chemical shifts of sodium are very small so that information can be deduced mainly from relaxation times (T1 and T2), line intensity and quadrupole coupling constants or splittings.

Abstract

Reactive ion etching (RIE) is extensively used as a high resolution pattern transfer process for fabrication of silicon devices. In this work dry etching radiation damage in p-type boron doped, silicon wafers was investigated using a nondestructive surface acoustic wave (SAW) technique. The transverse acoustoelectric voltage (TAV) is monitored across the silicon wafer which is placed in proximity of a SAW delay line. TAV is developed due to the nonlinear interaction between the electric field accompanying SAW and the free carriers near the silicon surface. TAV versus bias voltage (applied across the semiconductor) was obtained to measure the flatband voltage (VFB) shift. The flatband voltage shift of the etched wafer was determined as a measure of the amount of surface charge introduced into the surface by ion bombardment. SiO2films were etched in C4F8and C2H2with 2 W/cm2input power. The ion energy was determined by the self bias dc voltage developed on the cathode. It is shown that a magnetron RF discharge introduces an order of magnitude less damage than non-magnetron discharge.

A new s.a.w. time-inversion system is described. It requires fewer chirp-filter elements than those required with the common method of cascading two Fourier or Fresnel transformations. This new method is based on the fact that the Fourier transform of a linear f.m. signal whose envelope is modulated by a given time function has (approximately) the time-inverted function as its amplitude. Theoretical discussion and some experimental results are included.

Purpose of Review: The following article summarizes the current available knowledge regarding tracheostomy techniques, indications, contraindications, procedure timing, use of assisted technologies and tracheostomy feasibility and safety in high-risk populations. In light of the ongoing corona virus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, a focus was placed on tracheostomy in this unique patient group., Recent Findings: Percutaneous dilatation tracheostomy (PDT) is commonly used in the ICU setting. It has been shown to be well tolerated and feasible in a diverse patient population including those regarded to be at high risk such as the obese, coagulopathic and acute respiratory failure patient. This patient profile presented itself frequently in the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Indeed studies showed that PDT is well tolerated in COVID-19 ICU patients leading to reduced ICU length of stay (LOS), decrease in ventilator-associated pneumonia rate (VAP) and reduced duration on invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). Despite initial concerns, virus transmission from patient to healthcare provider (HCP) was shown to be negligible when proper precautions are taken., Summary: Bedside PDT in the ICU is a well tolerated procedure having the potential to benefit both the individual patient as well as to improve resource utilization of the healthcare system., (Copyright © 2022 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. Ba1 bacteria (Halomonas israelensis) were grown on different salt concentrations 0.2-4 M. When the cells were transferred to a medium containing 25 mM CsCl without potassium there was an uptake of cesium by the cells. The intracellular cesium signal was shifted from the cesium signal in the medium without the use of a shift reagent. The shift was depended on the salt concentration in the growth medium. The intracellular cesium shift showed a much smaller dependence on the concentration of salts in the medium than the extracellular cesium; the same results were detected for cells grown on a medium containing 25 mM CsCl. The cesium transport through the cell membrane was mostly by active transport. The cesium concentration in the cell was higher than that of the medium, approximately 100 mM intracellular concentration compared to 25 mM in the medium. The first order constants for influx or efflux of cesium were from 2 x 10(-4) and up to 24 x 10(-4)/min for the different medium concentrations.

Abstract

The 19F NMR Ca(2+)-indicator molecule 5,5'-difluoro-1,2-bis(o- aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (5-FBAPTA) was used in a procedure that enhances its range of applications to measuring free Ca2+ concentrations in buffer solutions and human erythrocytes. Even if the signal from the Ca-5-FBAPTA complex was not visible, the concentration of the complex could be calculated from saturation transfer spectra. This was demonstrated with well characterized buffer solutions in vitro and shown to also apply to concentrated haemolysates. The analysis required a precise estimate of the dissociation rate constant of the complex; this was found to be 295/s at 37 degrees C and the corresponding association rate constant was 4.1 x 10(8) L/mol/s. These values differ from those obtained previously in different buffer conditions and by two different NMR methods. A series of spectra were acquired from haemolysates containing 5-FBAPTA, in which saturating irradiation was applied at a frequency that was progressively off-set from the carrier frequency. Saturation transfer to the free 5-FBAPTA was seen from irradiation at frequencies different from that of Ca-5-FBAPTA, thus suggesting the presence of complexes with proteins.

The intracellular sodium concentration and intracellular volume of human red blood cells were determined from 23Na and 1H NMR spectra. It is shown that sodium dissolved in the intracellular water has a concentration higher than that previously published. The intracellular sodium concentration measured was 11.4 +/- 3.1 mM. A comparison of different NMR methods used to determine sodium concentration is given.

The synthesis and uptake of intracellular organic osmolytes (compatible solutes) were studied with the aid of natural abundance 13C NMR spectroscopy in two unrelated, moderately halophilic eubacteria: Ba1 and Vibrio costicola. In minimal media containing 1 M NaCl, both microorganisms synthesized the cyclic amino acid, 1,4,5,6-tetrahydro-2-methyl-4-pyrimidinecarboxylic acid (trivial name, ectoine) as the predominant compatible solute, provided that no glycine betaine was present in the growth medium. When, however, the minimal medium was supplemented with glycine betaine or the latter was a component of a complex medium, it was transported into the cells and the accumulating glycine betaine replaced the ectoine. In Ba1, grown in a defined medium containing glucose as the single carbon source, ectoine could only be detected if the NaCl concentration in the medium was higher than 0.6 M; the ectoine content increased with the external salt concentration. At NaCl concentrations below 0.6 M, alpha,alpha-trehalose was the major organic osmolyte. The concentration of ectoine reached its peak during the exponential phase and declined subsequently. In contrast, the accumulation of glycine betaine continued during the stationary phase. The results presented here indicate that, at least in the two microorganisms studied, ectoine plays an important role in haloadaptation.

17O-NMR measurements of labeled Pro-Leu-Gly-NH2 were carried out at different pH levels and in mixed solvents of water/acetonitrile. Complementary studies of the amide protons were carried out in acetonitrile-d3. Only the prolyl C = 17O group was sensitive to the pH level. Protonation of the amine group resulted in an upfield chemical shift of 18 ppm. The chemical shifts of each of the three oxygen sites was sensitive to the ratio water:acetonitrile. Solvent composition dependence of the chemical shift and linewidth suggests that the prolyl C = 17O is involved in intramolecular hydrogen bond formation when Pro-Leu-Gly-NH2 is dissolved in acetonitrile, while in water there is no intramolecular H bond.

The longitudinal and transverse relaxation curves of sodium undergoing exchange between two sites are presented. When the two sites are 'bound' and 'free' sodium respectively, the relaxation curves are, in general, not exponential. It is shown that in some cases only one exponential decay could be detected experimentally though the true decay curve is much more complicated. In such cases where the population of 'free' and 'bound' sodium are equal, only 40-70% of the total intensity would be detected, depending on the lifetime of sodium in the two sites. It is also shown that the fast exchange approximation, usually applied in the interpretation of sodium relaxation curves, might lead to wrong conclusions. Measurements of sodium relaxation times in halotolerant bacteria show that T1 and T2 are different and frequency-dependent. The intensity of the sodium sugnal is 40% of the total sodium concentration. It was possible to simulate the relaxation behaviour and intensity measurements by applying the following model. There are three types of sodium, the extracellular sodium (A) which exchanges with part of the intracellular sodium (B) and a fraction (C) which is bound but does not exchange with the extracellular sodium. It was possible to estimate the physical properties of sodium at site B. The quadrupole coupling constant (e2qQ/H)B = 9.10(6) rad/s, the correlation time taucB = 5.5.10(-7) s and the lifetime of sodium at site B, tauB = 6.10(-4) s.

Lithium NMR relaxation times of some model systems and E. coli cells in high LiCl concentration were measured. The lithium NMR relaxation times were compared to the relaxation times in the holotolerant bacterium Ba1 (Goldberg, M., Risk, M. and Gilboa, H. (1983) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 763, 35-40). Complementary studies of the water protons NMR relaxation times were carried out. It is suggested that the lithium in the H.S. Ba1 bacterium is occulated in small pores of the cell envelope.
