ABSTRACT: To facilitate sustainable dairy farming, it is essential to assess and support the mental health of dairy farm workers, which is affected more than that of workers in other industries, as indicated by the relatively few studies to date. In addition, the limited investigations on mental health in dairy workers minimize the opportunities to suggest practical approaches of improvement of their mental health. Therefore, further data acquisition and analysis is required. In the present study, we undertook quantitative surveys on 17 management factors and administered a mental health questionnaire to 81 dairy farm managers (80 male, 1 female) in Hokkaido, northern Japan. The management factors were categorized into 3 groups: production input, production output, and facility indicator; mental health was evaluated based on the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Principal component analysis assigned the factors into 2 groups: intensiveness factors of dairy production systems (PC1: livestock care cost, fat- and protein-corrected milk, stocking density, medical consultation fee per unit time per animal unit, nonfamily wages, fertilizer and pesticide expenses, and net agricultural income ratio) and basic dairy management factors (PC2: net agricultural income ratio, quantity of concentrate feed, and milk quality variable). The depression symptoms of dairy farm managers were not significantly associated with PC1 and milking methods; however, they were significantly negatively associated with PC2, which integrated 3 management factors, including factors related to finances, feeding, and milk quality. According to the findings of the present study, the efforts needed for stable economic farm management, adequate feed supply, and milk quality maintenance may increase the depression levels of dairy farm managers and negatively affect their mental health. These findings could be the basis for future studies on the relationship between the mental health of farm managers and sustainable dairy farm management and production. more...

ABSTRACT: For many producers, introduction of improved animal welfare systems is a turning point in their future production strategies as it increases production costs. The increase in egg retail prices is of growing concern not only for producers, but also for retailers and consumers. However, no report has calculated the estimated production costs or retail prices associated with introducing practices that support improved animal welfare in poultry farms in Japan. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the production costs and table egg prices of 6 types of laying hen systems: conventional cage (CC): 8- and 12-tiers (CC8, CC12), enriched cage (EC): 8- and 12-tiers (EC8, EC12), aviary (AV), and barn systems (BR). Production costs include land purchases, construction costs of facilities, equipment and machinery, quantity of feed provided, farming materials invested, and wages. As a result, farm gate prices were estimated as CC8 = 12.19, CC12 = 12.19, EC8 = 14.52, EC12 = 14.52, AV = 21.14, and BR = 28.74 [yen/egg], and the production cost, including building the new farm, increased by EC8 = 19.1%, EC12 = 19.1%, AV = 73.4%, and BR = 135.7%, respectively, referring to the value of CC. The results show that the prices increase in systems between CC and BN. The retail price or table egg price was estimated to be CC8 = 24.68, CC12 = 24.68, EC8 = 28.07, EC12 = 28.07, AV = 37.27, and BR = 48.53 [yen/egg]. The retail price of BR is approximately twice that of CC. In addition, assuming that all of Japan's eggs were produced in the BR system, the soaring cost of eggs would likely affect the prices of factory eggs, such as liquid eggs and other products, thus affecting the prices of various food products.Understanding the significant management costs that affect the retail price of eggs would facilitate improved policies and practical approaches to support poultry farms and sustainable farming activities while addressing public concerns. more...

In this study, 3D interconnected nanoporous (3DNP) TiVNbMoTa HEAs were synthesized from the (TiVNbMoTa)25Ni75 as-cast precursor alloy using the liquid metal dealloying (LMD). The as-cast precursor demonstrated the initial dendritic microstructure consisting of fcc and hcp phases. At 600 °C after 1 h, tiny ligaments about 10 nm thickness were homogeneously synthesized. At 900 °C, the bulk transformation intensively took place at the original precursor alloy. Specifically, the dendritic morphology of the original phases disappeared, and the fraction of fcc phase decreased from 63% to 20%. This pre-transformation behavior significantly influences the dealloying mechanism. Kurdjumov–Sachs orientation relationship (OR) governed the ligament formation at the prior fcc phase while Pitsch-Schrader (P–S) OR controlled the ligament evolution at the prior hcp phase. An unusual mechanism of two-step dealloying was observed at the fcc phase region when the dealloying rate was decreased at the reaction front. The dissolution of Ni occurs by stepwise transformations of fcc=>hcp=>bcc. The prior fcc grain was transformed to the abnormally large hcp ligaments and tiny bcc ligaments. Then, the abnormal hcp ligaments were further dealloyed to smaller bcc ligaments following the P–S OR. This study pave the way for the design of compositionally complex porous materials with a customized morphology and advanced physical properties by dealloying. more...

Summary: Background: Periodic point prevalence surveys (PPSs) provide a method for assessing changes in healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and antimicrobial use over time. Following the introduction of an antimicrobial stewardship programme at Nagoya University Hospital (Aichi, Japan) a five-year PPS study was performed to highlight any epidemiological changes. Methods: One-day PPSs were performed annually in July at Nagoya University Hospital. Data on patient characteristics, medical devices, active HAIs and antimicrobial use were collected using a standard data-collection form. Results: A total of 4339 patients were included. Over the five-year study period the median patient age was 62 years, median duration of hospital admission was nine days, 9% of patients had an HAI and 35.2% received at least one antimicrobial. Overall there were 406 HAIs (95% confidence interval, 369–447) with surgical site infection, pneumonia and febrile neutropenia occurring most frequently. Enterobacterales were the most common pathogens (N = 78, 28.6%) and 32.1% were third-generation cephalosporin-resistant. Meropenem was the most frequently prescribed antimicrobial for HAIs. Surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis changed drastically, with shorter durations and a marked reduction in oral cephalosporin use. However, antimicrobials for medical prophylaxis gradually increased. Conclusions: This five-year PPS study shows consistent data for patient background, HAIs and causative pathogens and highlights changes in antimicrobial use during the era of the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance. To describe the epidemiology of Japanese hospitals by PPS, multicentre PPSs including in community hospitals should be performed annually. more...

Physics ,QC1-999 - Abstract
Magnetization curves for Nd2Fe14B single crystals were measured between 300 K and 900 K. The saturation magnetization Ms along the [100] direction was found to be 2% to 4% smaller than that for the [001] direction, not only at 300 K but also up to the Curie temperature. We attributed this difference in Ms to the reduction of the Nd moment when forced to be aligned by external fields. Significant anisotropy was observed in the paramagnetic susceptibility χ up to 900 K. Based on the crystalline electric field parameters for Nd2Fe14B obtained by first-principles calculation, we calculated the magnetization and paramagnetic susceptibility χ. The difference in Ms and χ obtained from the calculation was in good agreement with the experiment. We found that the reduction rates for the Nd moments at 4f site are much smaller than that for the Nd moments at 4g site. This result therefore suggests a significant deterioration of local magnetic anisotropy at the Nd(4f) site even at elevated temperatures. more...

Ultra wideband (UWB) automotive radars have attracted attention from the viewpoint of reducing traffic accidents. The performance of automotive radars may be degraded by interference from nearby radars using the same frequency. In this study, a scenario where two cars pass each other on a road was considered. Considering the utilization of cross-polarization, the desired-to-undesired signal power ratio (DUR) was found to vary approximately from -10 to 30 dB. Different pseudo random sequences were employed for spectrum spreading the different radar signals to mitigate the interference effects. This paper evaluates the interference suppression provided by maximum length sequence (MLS) and Gold sequence (GS) through numerical simulations of the radar’s performance in terms of probability of false alarm and probability of detection. It was found that MLS and GS yielded nearly the same performance when the DUR is -10 dB (worst case); for example when fixing the probability of false alarm to 0.0001, the probabilities of detection were 0.964 and 0.946 respectively. The GS are more advantageous than MLS due to larger number of different sequences having the same length in GS than in MLS. more...

Physics ,QC1-999 - Abstract
We investigated La-coated Nd2Fe14B thin film magnets by scanning/transmission electron microscopy to clarify the coercivity enhancement mechanism in Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets. The coercivity of La-coated film magnets was increased from 8.5 to 15 kOe by post-annealing. The fcc-LaOx layer was epitaxially grown on [001]-oriented Nd2Fe14B fine grains with a crystallographic orientation relation of Nd2Fe14B (001)[110] || LaOx (111)[112¯], both in the as-deposited and post-annealed films. STEM-EDS elemental analysis revealed that the only difference caused by post-annealing was the O content in the LaOx layer, which increased from 15 to 35 at.%. These results suggest that the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the Nd ions, which were reduced at the surface of Nd2Fe14B, would be recovered by the presence of O, leading to a remarkable increase in the coercivity. more...

Dakhla Oasis is located in the heart of the Western Desert of Egypt 190 km to the West of the Kharga Oasis where it contains highly fertile lands rich in water and it supports a higher population compared to the Kharga Oasis. The study area is mainly concentrated in the Rashda village where Well No. 3 Irrigation District is located to the northwest of the village. Satellite imageries of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) 1972 and 1984, Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) 1988, and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) 2000 were used to determine the change in landuse and change in elevation with its relation to landuse. The automated unsupervised classification technique was applied to delineate the different landuse classes. Landsat – 5/TM and Landsat – 7/ETM + images in the period between 2001 and 2010 have been used to study crop rotation at the Rashda village to detect the amount of vegetation cover and its condition in the Well No.3 district. The land use change analysis showed that the extension of cultivated land was already completed by the 1980s in the North and South subdistricts, after which it spread toward the West. Because the altitude in the West subdistrict is lower than the wells, irrigation water could be distributed adequately if the condition of the irrigation channel was well maintained. The relationship between the irrigation level and plant production was not favorable in the West compared with other subdistricts. The cultivated area in the West district has been increasing since the 1970s. According to the crop rotation analysis, the different productivity of the subdistricts was caused by several factors, including the land altitude and the distance from the well, as well as other factors such as social relationships in the village. more...

An ionosonde network consisting of a meridional chain and an equatorial pair was established in the Southeast Asian area. Three of four ionosondes are along the magnetic meridian of 100° E; two are close to the magnetic conjugate points in Northern Thailand and West Sumatra, Indonesia, and the other is near the magnetic equator in the Malay Peninsula, Thailand. The fourth ionosonde is also near the magnetic equator in Vietnam but separated by about 6.3° towards east from the meridional chain. For a preliminary data analysis, nighttime ionospheric height variations at the three stations of the meridional chain were examined. The results demonstrate that the coordination of the network has a great potential for studying ionosphere/thermosphere dynamics. Through the assistance of model calculations, thermospheric neutral winds were inferred and compared with the HWM93 empirical thermospheric wind model. Higher-order wind variations that are not represented in the empirical model were found. more...

Physics ,QC1-999 - Abstract
Apart from applications in classical information-processing devices, the electrical control of atomic defects in solids at room temperature will have a tremendous impact on quantum devices that are based on such defects. In this study, we demonstrate the electrical manipulation of individual prominent representatives of such atomic solid-state defects, namely, the negative charge state of single nitrogen-vacancy defect centers (NV^{−}) in diamond. We experimentally demonstrate, deterministic, purely electrical charge-state initialization of individual NV centers. The NV centers are placed in the intrinsic region of a p-i-n diode structure that facilitates the delivery of charge carriers to the defect for charge-state switching. The charge-state dynamics of a single NV center were investigated by time-resolved measurements and a nondestructive single-shot readout of the charge state. Fast charge-state switching rates (from negative to neutrally charged defects), which are greater than 0.72 ± 0.10 μs^{−1}, were realized. Furthermore, in no-operation mode, the realized charge states were stable for presumably much more than 0.45 s. We believe that the results obtained are useful not only for ultrafast electrical control of qubits, long T_{2} quantum memory, and quantum sensors associated with single NV centers but also for classical memory devices based on single atomic storage bits working under ambient conditions. more...

A total of 111 samples from Southern Hemisphere blue whales were sequenced for 420 base pairs of the mitochondrial control region and all but one of those were genotyped over seven microsatellite loci. Comparisons were made between samples from three broad geographic regions: the southeast Pacific Ocean; Indian Ocean; and around the Antarctic continent. Each of these strata was found to be highly differentiated from the others, in both mitochondrial and nuclear data. The genetic differentiation between the geographic ranges of the nominal subspecies (i.e. true blue whales in Antarctica vs. pygmy blues in Pacific and Indian Oceans) was not markedly greater than between the populations of pygmy blue whales. Assignment tests using the microsatellite data provide some insight into detection of feeding-season mixing, although existing methods have some limitations. more...

A 1% potassium peroxymonosulphate-based environmental disinfectant (PPED) produces sodium hypochlorite when combined with sodium chloride, which functions as a disinfectant. However, little is known about the impact of hospital cleaning with PPED on hospital-onset Clostridioides difficile infection (HO-CDI).To reduce HO-CDI, we promoted antimicrobial stewardship and hospital ward cleaning with PPED: this study was conducted to evaluate their impact. We began a promotion of post-prescription review with feedback for broad-spectrum antimicrobials and hospital ward cleaning with PPED. We reviewed the ratio of HO-CDI, PPED consumption, and days of therapy (DOT) of broad-spectrum antimicrobials between July 2014 and March 2018, dividing this time into the pre-promotion (July 2014 to June 2015) and post-promotion periods (July 2015 to March 2018).Using interrupted time series analysis, an immediate significant change in HO-CDI was observed after intervention (P=0.03), although a downward trend was not observed over this period (P=0.19). Trends in PPED consumption significantly changed over this period (P=0.02). DOT of carbapenems decreased immediately after the intervention began (P0.01). A Poisson regression analysis showed that PPED consumption and DOT of carbapenems were independent factors affecting HO-CDI (P=0.039 and 0.016, respectively). We revealed that DOT of carbapenems and use of PPED were associated with the HO-CDI ratio and that both interventions reduced the rate of HO-CDI. This is the first report on the impact of hospital ward cleaning with PPED on the reduction of HO-CDI. more...

Surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis (SAP) is one of the major purposes of antimicrobial use.To determine the adherence to the Japanese SAP guidelines in Japanese university hospitals. This was a retrospective cohort study including 15 general hospitals and one dental university hospital. Up to three cases of 18 designated surgeries were evaluated regarding adherence to Japanese SAP guidelines: selection of antibiotics, timing of administration, re-dosing intervals, and duration of SAP. When all items were appropriate, surgery was defined as 'appropriate'.In total, 688 cases (22-45 cases per surgery) were included. The overall appropriateness was 46.8% (322/688), and the appropriateness of each surgery ranged from 8.0% (2/25, cardiac implantable electronic device implantation) to 92.1% (35/38, distal gastrectomy). The appropriateness of each item was as follows: pre/intraoperative selections, 78.5% (540/688); timing of administrations, 96.0% (630/656); re-dosing intervals, 91.6% (601/656); postoperative selection, 78.9% (543/688); and duration of SAP, 61.4% (423/688). The overall appropriateness of hospitals ranged from 17.6% (9/51) to 73.3% (33/45). The common reasons for inappropriateness were the longer duration (38.5%, 265/688) and choice of antibiotics with a non-optimal antimicrobial spectrum before/during, and after surgery (19.0%, 131/688 and 16.9%, 116/688, respectively), compared to the guideline.Adherence to the guidelines differed greatly between the surgeries and hospitals. Large-scale multi-centre surveillance of SAP in Japanese hospitals is necessary to identify inappropriate surgeries, factors related to the appropriateness, and incidences of surgical site infections. more...

Multidisciplinary - Abstract
In plants, many invading microbial pathogens are recognized by cell-surface pattern recognition receptors, which induce defense responses. Here, we show that the ceramide Phytophthora infestans –ceramide D (Pi-Cer D) from the plant pathogenic oomycete P. infestans triggers defense responses in Arabidopsis . Pi-Cer D is cleaved by an Arabidopsis apoplastic ceramidase, NEUTRAL CERAMIDASE 2 (NCER2), and the resulting 9-methyl–branched sphingoid base is recognized by a plasma membrane lectin receptor–like kinase, RESISTANT TO DFPM-INHIBITION OF ABSCISIC ACID SIGNALING 2 (RDA2). 9-Methyl–branched sphingoid base is specific to microbes and induces plant immune responses by physically interacting with RDA2. Loss of RDA2 or NCER2 function compromised Arabidopsis resistance against an oomycete pathogen. Thus, we elucidated the recognition mechanisms of pathogen-derived lipid molecules in plants. more...

By employing a randomisation procedure on the variance parameter of the standard geometric Brownian motion (GBM) model, we construct new families of analytically tractable asset pricing models. In particular, we develop two explicit families of processes that are respectively referred to as the randomised gamma (G) and randomised inverse gamma (IG) models, both characterised by a shape and scale parameter. Both models admit relatively simple closed-form analytical expressions for the transition density and the no-arbitrage prices of standard European-style options whose Black-Scholes implied volatilities exhibit symmetric smiles in the log-forward moneyness. Surprisingly, for integer-valued shape parameter and arbitrary positive real scale parameter, the analytical option pricing formulas involve only elementary functions and are even more straightforward than the standard (constant volatility) Black-Scholes (GBM) pricing formulas. Moreover, we show some interesting characteristics of the risk-neutral transition densities of the randomised G and IG models, both exhibiting fat tails. In fact, the randomised IG density only has finite moments of the order less than or equal to one. In contrast, the randomised G density has a finite first moment with finite higher moments depending on the time-to-maturity and its scale parameter. We show how the randomised G and IG models are efficiently and accurately calibrated to market equity option data, having pronounced implied volatility smiles across several strikes and maturities. We also calibrate the same option data to the wellknown SABR (Stochastic Alpha Beta Rho) model. more...

Lacking the structural information of crystalline solids, the origin of the relaxation dynamics of metallic glasses is unclear. Here, we report the evolution of stress relaxation of high-entropy metallic glasses with distinct β relaxation behavior. The fraction of liquidlike zones, determined at each temperature by the intensity of stress decay, is shown to be directly related to both the aging process and the spectrum of relaxation modes obtained by mechanical spectroscopy. The results shed light on the intrinsic correlation between the static and dynamic mechanical response in high-entropy and conventional metallic glasses, pointing toward a sluggish diffusion high-entropy effect in the liquid dynamics. more...

We aimed to classify Japanese adults without diabetes into different categories based on the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and characterize their insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion. The OGTT was performed on 1,085 Japanese individuals without diabetes (aged 20-64 years); blood glucose and insulin levels were measured at 0, 30-, 60-, 90-, and 120-min. Fasting blood chemistry, hematology, and urine were analyzed. The participants were classified into four categories based on the following: (A) 30 min post-load plasma glucose levels157 mg/dL and/or (B) 120 min post-load plasma glucose levels126 mg/dL and Matsuda index4.97. Category 1 satisfied both conditions, category 2 satisfied condition A but not B, category 3 satisfied condition B but not A, and category 4 satisfied neither condition.Overall, 46%, 21%, 13%, and 20% of the participants were classified into categories 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively. Compared with category 1, the characteristics of the other categories were: 2, low insulin sensitivity and high blood glucose levels during the later period; 3, low insulin secretion and a rapid increase in blood glucose levels; and 4, combined characteristics of categories 2 and 3. Most blood test values besides glucose metabolism in category 4 were also worse than those in category 1. Categories 1 and 2 had a high proportion of females, whereas categories 3 and 4 had a low proportion.Japanese adults without diabetes are classified into four categories with different insulin sensitivities and insulin secretion using OGTT results. Each category has different characteristics of age and sex distribution and clinical values besides glucose metabolism. more...

Physics and Astronomy (miscellaneous) - Abstract
The realization of electroluminescence (EL) of negatively charged nitrogen vacancy (NV−) centers is important toward all-electrical control of diamond quantum devices. In this study, we demonstrated electrical excitation and detection of EL of single NV− centers by using lateral diamond p+–i(n−)–n+ diodes. It had been grown by homoepitaxy using the plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique. We introduced a lightly phosphorus doped i(n−) layer to stabilize the negative state of NV centers. It was estimated that the efficiency of the electrical excitation rate of the NV center was more than 30 times enhanced by introducing lateral diamond p+–i(n−)–n+ diodes structure compared with the previous vertical diode. Furthermore, the EL of a single NV− center embedded in the i(n−) layer region was characterized. The results show that the charge state of the single NV centers can be manipulated by the voltage applied to the p+–i(n−)–n+ diode, where the emission of EL is increasingly dominated by NV− in the range of 30 to 50 V. more...

Exquisite sensitivities are a prominent advantage of quantum sensors. Ramsey sequences allow precise measurement of direct current fields, while Hahn-echo-like sequences measure alternating current fields. However, the latter are restrained for use with high-frequency fields (above approximately $1$ kHz) due to finite coherence times, leaving less-sensitive noncoherent methods for the low-frequency range. In this paper, we propose to bridge the gap with a fitting-based algorithm with a frequency-independent sensitivity to coherently measure low-frequency fields. As the algorithm benefits from coherence-based measurements, its demonstration with a single nitrogen-vacancy center gives a sensitivity of $9.4$ nT Hz$^{-0.5}$ for frequencies below about $0.6$ kHz down to near-constant fields. To inspect the potential in various scenarios, we apply the algorithm at a background field of tens of nTs, and we measure low-frequency signals via synchronization., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures; supp 14 pages, 9 figures more...
