Deriving physical properties of trans-Neptunian objects is important for the understanding of our Solar System. This requires observational efforts and the development of techniques suitable for these studies. Aims. Our aim is to characterize the large trans-Neptunian object (TNO) 2002 TC302. Methods. Stellar occultations offer unique opportunities to determine key physical properties of TNOs. On 28 January 2018, 2002 TC302 occulted a mv ∼ 15.3 star with designation 593-005847 in the UCAC4 stellar catalog, corresponding to Gaia source 130957813463146112. Twelve positive occultation chords were obtained from Italy, France, Slovenia, and Switzerland. Also, four negative detections were obtained near the north and south limbs. This represents the best observed stellar occultation by a TNO other than Pluto in terms of the number of chords published thus far. From the 12 chords, an accurate elliptical fit to the instantaneous projection of the body can be obtained that is compatible with the near misses. Results. The resulting ellipse has major and minor axes of 543 ± 18 km and 460 ± 11 km, respectively, with a position angle of 3 ± 1 degrees for the minor axis. This information, combined with rotational light curves obtained with the 1.5 m telescope at Sierra Nevada Observatory and the 1.23 m telescope at Calar Alto observatory, allows us to derive possible three-dimensional shapes and density estimations for the body based on hydrostatic equilibrium assumptions. The effective diameter in equivalent area is around 84 km smaller than the radiometrically derived diameter using thermal data from Herschel and Spitzer Space Telescopes. This might indicate the existence of an unresolved satellite of up to ∼300 km in diameter, which is required to account for all the thermal flux, although the occultation and thermal diameters are compatible within their error bars given the considerable uncertainty of the thermal results. The existence of a potential satellite also appears to be consistent with other ground-based data presented here. From the effective occultation diameter combined with absolute magnitude measurements we derive a geometric albedo of 0.147 ± 0.005, which would be somewhat smaller if 2002 TC302 has a satellite. The paper presents the results of dynamic simulation for the dust tail formation of comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp). To simulate the dust tail, the trajectories of 2 × 106 dust particles were traced. The sizes, ejection moments, outflow directions and velocities of the dust particles were defined by the Monte Carlo algorithm. The obtained three-dimensional tail was projected on the sky plane to compare it with the observed images. The brightness distribution in the comet tail was fitted to similar model parameters for three different dates. According to our model experiments, the observed tails could be formed by particles with sizes from 0.3 to 8.0 μm, ejection velocities from 0.155 to 0.670 km/s, and power index of the exponential size distribution from −3.6 to −3.7. It is shown that the inclusion of the particles fragmentation processes leads to a noticeable improvement of the simulation results.

Images of comet Hyakutake (C/1996 B2) are analyzed in conjunction with solar wind data from spacecraft to determine the relationship between solar wind conditions and plasma tail morphology. The disconnection event (DE) on March 25, 1996 is analyzed with the aid of data from the IMP-8 and WIND Earth-orbiting spacecraft and the DE is found to be correlated with a crossing of the heliospheric current sheet. The comet was within 0.1 AU of Earth at the time of the DE and data from IMP-8 and WIND show no high-speed streams, significant density enhancements or shocks. The latitudinal variation in the appearance and orientation of the plasma tail are interpreted based on results from the Ulysses spacecraft. In the polar solar wind region, the comet has a relatively undisturbed appearance, no DEs were observed, and the orientation of the plasma tail was consistent with a higher solar wind speed. In the equatorial solar wind region, the comet's plasma tail had a disturbed appearance, a major DE was observed, and the orientation of the plasma tail was consistent with a lower solar wind speed. The boundary between the equatorial and polar regions crossed by comet Hyakutake in April 1996 was near 30°N (ecliptic) or 24°N (solar) latitude.

Earth- and space-based observations provide synergistic information for space mission encounters by providing data over longer timescales, at different wavelengths and using techniques that are impossible with an in situ flyby. We report here such observations in support of the EPOXI spacecraft flyby of comet 103P/Hartley 2. The nucleus is small and dark, and exhibited a very rapidly changing rotation period. Prior to the onset of activity, the period was ∼16.4 hr. Starting in 2010 August the period changed from 16.6 hr to near 19 hr in December. With respect to dust composition, most volatiles and carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios, the comet is similar to other Jupiter-family comets. What is unusual is the dominance of CO2-driven activity near perihelion, which likely persists out to aphelion. Near perihelion the comet nucleus was surrounded by a large halo of water-ice grains that contributed significantly to the total water production. Fil: Meech, K. J.. We report on early observations of the optical afterglow of GRB 070411 obtained by the Crni Vrh 0.6‐m, the ROTSE IIIc 0.45‐m, and the Tautenburg 1.34‐m Schmidt telescope starting within 1 to 5 minutes after the trigger. The derived light curve presents a rising phase, then a plateau followed by a steep decay and finally a jet break.

The plasma tails of comets clearly show the demarcation of the solar wind into distinct equatorial and polar regions (Brandt and Snow (2000), Icarus 148, 52–64). The boundary is determined by the maximum extent in latitude of the heliospheric current sheet (HCS). The observational record contains many well-observed equatorial comets, but observations of comets in the polar region are relatively rare.
