Abstract: Jet production properties at s = 540 GeV have been measured in the UA2 detector at the CERN pp Collider. Results on the total transverse momentum of the jet system, on the parton density in the nucleon (structure function) and on the two-jet angular distributions are reported. The data are compared with QCD predictions and extrapolations from lower energy experiments. © 1984.

Abstract: Fragmentation properties of a sample of two-jet events measured by the UA2 detector at the CERN p p Collider are described. The energy flow is compared with different model predictions. The charged particle multiplicity in jets is found to exceed extrapolations from lower energy e+e− jet data.

Abstract: A new project, the “Detector Physics and Applications Center (DePAC)”, is presented. DePAC is a general detector and sensor database, which is not application specific, on the Internet. DePAC collects and explains the physics, the technology and the application of a wide range of radiation detectors. DePAC also collects and describes information about noise problems, front-end electronics, data transfer, processing and storage. DePAC provides short write-ups and source code of all sorts of detector related software depending on availability. DePAC collects useful constants and properties of materials in an exhaustive series of tables and graphs. DePAC also acts as a point of contact for researchers and industry in an interdisciplinary way, e.g. in biology, in medicine, in materials research and in high energy or nuclear physics. Last but not least, DePAC aims to develop also into a virtual lecturing school and serves as a tutorial for students and all interested scientists.

4. A study on the in situ calibration of the absolute energy of hadron calorimeters

Abstract: A study on the in situ calibration of the absolute energy scale of hadron calorimeters is presented. The basic idea is to use a physics process, namely Drell–Yan production of tau pairs with the subsequent decay of the tau into a single hadron and a tau-neutrino. The energy of the two charged, isolated hadrons with opposite sign can be measured in the calorimeters. Together with the momentum measurement from tracking detectors the ratio E / p can then be used to get the absolute energy calibration. The process of Drell–Yan production of tau pairs is very abundant at LHC energies, and at a promising level at the TEVATRON energy in view of the future improved luminosity. The enormous rate from background processes mainly coming from QCD jet production can be handled to a negligible level by using appropriate kinematical cuts. At LHC energies the cut variables described could also serve to separate other physics channels from the background such as the Standard Model H 0 →τ + τ − or the supersymmetric A 0 →τ + τ − .

Abstract: NOMAD is a neutrino oscillation experiment designed to search for ντ appearance in the CERN-SPS wide band νμ beam. Signal detection relies on the identification of ντ charged current interactions using kinematic criteria. The analysis of the 1995 data sample yields no oscillation signal. Combining all studied τ decay modes, a limit of sin 2 2θ μτ 4.2×10 −3 is obtained for large Δm2 at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract: This article describes an integrated package of Parton Density Functions called PDFLIB which has been added to the CERN Program Library Pool W999 and is labelled as W5051. In this package all the different sets of parton density functions of the Nucleon, the Pion and the Photon which are available today have been put together. All these sets have been combined in a consistent way such that they all have similar calling sequences and no external data files have to be read in anymore. A default set has been prepared, although those preferring their own set or wanting to test a new one may do so within the package. The package also offers a program to calculate the strong coupling constant αs to first or second order. The correct ΛQCD associated to the selected set of structure functions and the number of allowed flavours with respect to the given Q2 is automatically used in the calculation. The selection of sets, the program parameters as well as the possibilities to modify the defaults and to control errors occurred during execution are described.

Abstract: A measurement of the gluon structure fusion using direct photon events observed with the UA2 detector in p p collisions at √ s =630 GeV is presented. The x -range covered by this analysis is between 0.049 and 0.207 and the Q 2 range is between 280 GeV 2 and 3670 GeV 2 . The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 7.14 pb −1 . The results are found to be in good agreement with the gluon distributions measured in deep inelastic scattering experiments extrapolated to the UA2 Q 2 values.

Abstract: The process pp→evγ+X is studied as √s=630 GeV. The observed signal is used to extract a direct measurement of the parameters κ and λ which define the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments of the W boson and therefore the WWγ coupling. We find κ=1+2.6−2.2 and λ=0+1.7−1.8 and their 95% confidence limits −3.5

Abstract: The decays W --> ev and Z --> e+e- are studied in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV. The products of production cross section and branching ratio are measured as sigma(W)e = 682 +/- 12 +/- 40 pb and sigma(Z)e = 65.6 +/- 4.0 +/- 3.8 pb. The results are in good agreement with O (alpha(s)2) calculations of the production cross sections. Many systematic effects cancel in the ratio, R = 10.4 +/- 0.6(0.7) +/- 0.3, which can be used to give an indirect measurement of the total width of the W boson: GAMMA(W) = 2.10 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.09 GeV. The width gives a limit on the top quark mass, m(top) > 53 GeV (95% CL), which is independent of the top decay mode.

Abstract: A search has been made for scalar leptoquark pair production with the upgraded UA2 detector at the CERN p p Collider at √s = 630 GeV, investigating decays of the leptoquark into a quark and either an electron or an electron neutrino. From an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 13 pb−1 a lower limit has been determined for the mass of first generation leptoquarks, yielding 67 GeV (95% CL) for a scalar leptoquark decaying with a 50% branching ratio into a quark and an electron.

Abstract: Results on the cross section for the production of electron pairs in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV are presented. The measured value is sigma = 405 +/- 51 (syst.) +/- 84 (syst.) pb, in the invariant mass interval 10 < m < 70 GeV. The results are compared to recent theoretical calculations which include O(alpha(s)2) QCD contributions. The comparison of these data with those of lower energy experiments show approximate scaling as a function of the variable square-root tau = m/ square-root s.

Abstract: The ratio of branching fractions of theW decaying to τ ande leptons is measured using $$\bar pp$$ collisions at $$\sqrt s = 630$$ GeV. The ratio of the electroweak charged current couplings to theW is then determined to beg /g =0.997±0.056 (stat.)±0.042 (syst.). The decay modeZ→τ+→τ+ is observed and also found to be consistent withe-τ universality.

Abstract: A study of the two-jet mass spectrum measured with the UA 2 calorimeter has revealed a signal from hadronic decays ofW andZ bosons above a large background. Production and decay properties of the signal have been measured. The combined production cross-section σ·B(W, Z → two jets) is 9.6±2.3 (stat.)±1.1 (syst.) nb, compared with an expectation of 5.8 nb calculated to order αs2. A limit on the production cross-section of additional heavy vector bosons decaying into two jets is given as a function of the boson mass.

Abstract: The transverse momentum distributions ofW andZ bosons produced in$\bar pp$ collisions at$\sqrt s = 630 GeV$ are examined. Comparisons are made with QCD predictions, and good agreement is found. The fraction ofW bosons produced withpT>25 GeV is found to be 3.8±0.6(stat)−1.3+0.9(syst)%.

Abstract: The UA2 experiment has collected large samples of W and Z events during recent runs at the CERN p p Collider at s = 630 GeV . These samples have been used to perform precise measurements of the masses of the W and Z bosons. After a careful analysis of systematic errors, an improved result is obtained for the mass ratio mwmz. This provides a new value for the weak mixing parameter sin2θw. Furthermore, it can be combined with recent measurements of the Z mass from e+e− colliders to give an absolute measurement of the W mass, leading to the result mw=80.49±0.43 (stat) ± 0.24 (syst) GeV.

Abstract: Results on the production cross sections ofW andZ bosons detected in the UA2 experiment are given based on a large sample ofW→eν andZ→e + e − decays. The measured cross sections are σ = 660±15(stat)±37(syst)pb, σ = 70.4±5.5(stat)±4.0(syst)pb and their ratioR=9.38 −0.72 +0.82 (stat)±0.25(syst). In the framework of the Standard Model, the measured value ofR is used to determine the total width of theW, Γ(W)=2.30±0.19(stat)±0.06(syst) GeV.

Abstract: In this work we present a novel 3D Monte Carlo photon transport program for simulation of multiple refractive scattering based on the refractive properties of X-rays in highly scattering media, like lung tissue. Multiple scattering reduces not only the quality of the image, but contains also information on the internal structure of the object. This information can be exploited utilizing image modalities such as Diffraction Enhanced Imaging (DEI). To study the effect of multiple scattering a Monte Carlo program was developed that simulates multiple refractive scattering of X-ray photons on monodisperse PMMA (poly-methyl-methacrylate) microspheres representing alveoli in lung tissue. Eventually, the results of the Monte Carlo program were compared to the measurements taken at the SYRMEP beamline at Elettra (Trieste, Italy) on special phantoms showing a good agreement between both data., 5 page, 7 figures

Abstract: Diffraction Enhanced Imaging is a phase sensitive imaging modality, which recently has been demonstrated to be a powerful tool for improving the visibility of tiny low absorbing structures. Especially in medical imaging the capability to detect small details, not visible in a conventional radiograph is of relevant importance. An analyzer crystal is used as angular filter to select or reject X-rays that are deviated when traversing a sample if a gradient of the real part of the refractive index is encountered. At the medical imaging beamline of the synchrotron radiation facility Elettra (Trieste) experiments were carried out to assess the applicability of this technique to materials where a combined refraction from a large amount of small structures, not detectable separately, gives rise to an overall effect of multiple scattering. Tuning the analyzer crystal in different angular positions the variation of the contrast was studied. Strong contrast enhancement was measured in comparison to the conventional absorption image.

Abstract: The large sample of W→ev events collected by the UA2 experiment at the CERN pp̄ collider between 1988 and 1990 has been used to determine the strong coupling constant α s. From a measurement of the ratio of the production rate of W events with one jet to that with no jets, α s has been extracted to second order in the MS scheme: α s (M W 2) = 0.123 ± 0.0.18 (stat.) ± 0.017 (syst.).

Abstract: A new combined test of an electromagnetic liquid argon accordion calorimeter and a hadronic scintillating-tile calorimeter was carried out at the CERN SPS. These devices are prototypes of the barrel calorimeter of the future ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The energy resolution of pions in the energy range from 10 to 300 GeV at an incident angle [theta] of about 12° is well described by the expression , where E is in GeV. The response to electrons and muons was evaluated. Shower profiles, shower leakage and the angular resolution of hadronic showers were also studied. Abstract: A search was made for a new light gauge boson $X$ which might be produced in $\pi^{0}\to\gamma + X$ decay from neutral pions generated by 450-GeV protons in the CERN SPS neutrino target. The X's would penetrate the downstream shielding and be observed in the NOMAD detector via the Primakoff effect, in the process of $X \to\pi^{0}$ conversion in the external Coulomb field of a nucleus. With $1.45\times10^{18}$ protons on target, 20 candidate events with energy between 8 and 140 GeV were found from the analysis of neutrino data. This number is in agreement with the expectation of 18.1$\pm$2.8 background events from standard neutrino processes. A new 90% C.L. upper limit on the branching ratio $Br(\pi^{0}\to\gamma + X)< (3.3 to 1.9) \times10^{-5}$ for $X$ masses ranging from 0 to 120 MeV/c^2 is obtained., Comment: 15 pages, LaTex, 6 eps figures included, submitted to Physics Letters B

Abstract: The two-jet invariant mass spectrum as measured in the UA2 experiment is used to search for additional heavy vector bosons decaying to two-jets. The mass of an additional W boson that couples to fermions with a V + A form is constrained to be greater than 261 GeV to the 90% confidence level. A limit on the production cross section of additional W and Z bosons is given as a function of the boson mass. A limit on the production of excited quarks is also given as a function of the excited quark mass.

Abstract: The total punchthrough probability of showers produced by negatively charged pions of momenta 30, 40, 50, 75, 100, 200 and 300 GeV/c, has been measured in the RD5 experiment at CERN using a toroidal spectrometer. The range of the measurement extends to 5.3 m of equivalent iron. Our results have been obtained by two different analysis methods and are compared with the resutls of a previous experiment.

Abstract: A measurement of the cross-sections for single and double prompt photon production in p p interactions at s = 630 GeV is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 13.2 pb−1. The results are in good agreement with the predictions of perturbative QCD. The signal from double prompt photon production has a statistical significance of 4.3 standard deviations.

Abstract: The process t-H+b, H+ --> tau+nu, tau+ --> hadrons + nuBar and its charge conjugate are investigated by seeking an excess in number of observed theta's beyond that expected from the standard model under the assumption of e-tau-universality. No such excess is found and new regions of the m(H)-m(t) plane are excluded for B(H+ --> tau(nu) = 0.5 and 1.O. In addition, the ratio of couplings of the tau and eto the W is precisely measured as g-tau(W)/g-e(W) = 1.02 +/- 0.04(stat.) +/- 0.04(syst.).

Abstract: The W and Z bosons masses, m(W) and m(Z), are measured using samples of W --> ev and Z --> e+e- decays observed in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV. The ratio is found to be m(W)/m(Z) = 0.8813 +/- 0.0036 +/- 0.0019. This gives a value sin2 theta(w) = 0.2234 +/- 0.0064 +/- 0.0033, and in combination with precise m(Z) measurements from LEP yields m(W) = 80.35 +/- 0.33 +/- 0.17 GeV. This result is in good agreement with other experiments, and with the standard model for a top quark mass lighter than 250 GeV.

Abstract: A search for supersymmetric decays of the Z boson into a pair of scalar electrons or winos (partners of the electron and W boson) has been made with the upgraded UA2 experiment at the CERN p p collider at s = 630 GeV . The analysis of the sample of electron pairs, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.4 pb −1 , shows no evidence for such exotic decays. The 90% confidence level lower mass limits obtained exclude selectron masses up to e40 GeV/ c 2 in the case of a light photino, and wino masses up to 45 GeV/ c 2 in the case of a light scalar neutrino.

Abstract: A search has been made with the upgraded UA2 experiment at the CERN p p Collider at s =630 GeV for multi-jet events with large transverse momentum imbalance in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.4 pb−1. Under the assumption that the photino is the lightest stable supersymmetric (SUSY) particle, the data have been used to deduce lower limits in a minimal SUSY model for the squark ( m q ) and the gluino ( m g ) masses. The 90% CL bounds are m g > 74 GeV independent of m g , m g > 79 GeV independent of m g , and and m> 106 GeV for m q =m q =m .

Abstract: The upgraded UA 2 detector has collected data corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 7.5 pb−1 from$\bar pp$ collisions at a centre of mass energy of 630 GeV during 1988 and 1989. A search has been performed for the production and decay of the top quark (t) or a member of a hypothetical fourth family (b′). No evidence has been found for such processes. Using the expected rates for production and decay branching ratios from the Standard Model, this implies that the top quark mass is greater than 69(71) GeV/c2, and that theb′ mass is greater than 54(57) GeV/c2, at 95(90)% confidence.

Abstract: Using a sample of events collected by UA2 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 116 nb −1 . we have searched for electron-“neutrino” pairs in which the transverse momenta of the electron and of the “neutrino” exceed 15 GeV/c and 25 GeV/c respectively. A total of 35 events are observed in low background conditions. Most events can be interpreted in terms of W ± production from QCD processes. Events in which the observation of hard jets makes this interpretation unlikely are described in detail. Possible sources of background contamination are considered.

Abstract: The distribution of total tranverse energy ΣET over the pseudorapidity interval −1 < η < 1 and an azimuthal range Δφ=300° has been measured in the UA2 experiment at the CERN pp collider (s = 540 GeV) using a highly segmented total absorption caloriter. In the events with very large ΣET (ΣET⪆60 GeV) most of the transverse energy is found to be contained in small angular regions as expected for high transverse momentum hadron jets. We discuss the properties of a sample of two-jet events with invariant two-jet masses up to 140 GeVc2 and we measure the cross section for inclusive jet production in the range of jet transverse momenta between 15 and 60 GeVc.

Abstract: The decays W → e ν, Z → e + e - have been studied using the UA2 detector at the CERN [Formula: see text] Collider. Measurements of the Standard Model parameters from a sample of 251 W decays and 39 Z decays are compared with expectations of the Standard Electroweak Model. An upper limit on the number of light neutrino species is deduced from the cross — section ratio σ( W → e ν)/σ( Z → e + e -). A signal of the hadronic decay mode, [Formula: see text], is observed above the background of QCD produced di-jets.

Abstract: A heuristic model is used to describe data collected by the UA2 experiment at √ s = 630 GeV . Distributions of the energy sharing between the leading clusters and the rest of the event are examined. The main features of these distributions can be described by a two-component model with soft, collective interactions dominating at low transverse energy and hard, constituent interactions dominating at high transverse energy. This model provides a simple picture of the emergence of two-jet dominance at SPS p p Collider energies.

Abstract: The production of electrons with very high transverse momentum has been studied in the UA2 experiment at the CERN {Mathematical expression} collider ( {Mathematical expression}=540 GeV). From a sample of events containing an electron candidate with pT>15 GeV/c, we extract a clear signal resulting from the production of the charged intermediate vector boson W±, which subsequently decays into an electron and a neutrino. We study the W production and decay properties. Further-more, we refine our results on the production and decay of the neutral vector boson Z0. Finally, we compare the experimental results to the predictions of the standard model of the unified electro-weak theory. © 1984 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract: We report on a search for relativistic particles with fractional electric charge at the CERN p p colider, using a telescope of scintillation counters to detect particles with anomalously low ionization. Since no event survives the selection criteria, upper limits on quark production are deduced from this experiment. At 90% confidence level and in the limit of very light quarks with charge ± 1 2 and ± 2 3 they are 2.8×10 −6 and 5.6×10 −5 , respectively, per single charged particle. These limits increase rapidly with increasing quark mass and are nearly two and one order of magnitude better than previously measured by UA2.

Abstract: The production of very large transverse momentum ( p T ) hadron jets has been measured in the UA2 experiment at the CERN p p Collider for s =630 GeV . The inclusive jet production cross sections exhibit a p T -dependent increase with respect to the s =546 GeV data from previous Collider runs. This increase can be described both by QCD calculations and by approximate x T =2 p T /√ s scaling. No significant deviation of the data from QCD predictions is observed at very large p T , placing a lower limit on the characteristic scale Λ c of a hypothetical superstrong contact interaction responsible for the binding of preons in the quark ( Λ c >370 GeV at 95% CL).

Abstract: Inclusive π 0 production has been measured at the CERN pp collider, s =540 GeV , for 90° production angle and in a range of transverse momenta between 1.5 and 4.5 GeV/ c . The invariant production cross section is larger than that measured at s = 53 GeV for p-p collisions. The production of μ mesons aand of direct photons is also investigated.
