1. Neutron analyses of eight Bronze Age swords from Austria: The question of ‘stabbing’ or ‘cut-and-thrust’ weapons

Abstract

European Bronze Age swords are rare finds; they cannot normally be sampled in the destructive manner that would be necessary to assess their manufacturing technique, or to obtain evidence regarding their use primarily as ‘stabbing’ or ‘slashing’ weapons. Therefore, non-invasive neutron-based methods are potentially ideal. In this paper, neutron diffraction (ND) and Neutron Resonance Capture Analyses (NRCA) are presented. The analyses were undertaken on eight Bronze Age metal-hilted swords of various types, from three Austrian museums. Neutron diffraction measurements were carried out on all eight swords at the ISIS Neutron Facility, STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (UK), giving information about crystallographic microstructure, and major metal alloy and mineral compound proportions. NRCA was carried out on four of the swords at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Geel (BE), to determine the elemental compositions at various regions of these swords, because no invasive sampling was permitted. X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) was used to measure the elemental compositions of four swords from which one sample each was permitted to be cut for metallographic examination. The tin contents of the swords determined by NRCA, XRF and neutron diffraction data are in good agreement; some small differences could be well understood. Questions about the use of these swords as primarily either ‘stabbing’, or ‘cut-and-thrust’ weapons were addressed based on the neutron diffraction results and provide information which will be especially relevant for experimental archaeology and use-wear analysis.

3. Influence of Sewered Versus Septic Systems on Watershed Exports of E. coli

Abstract

Elevated bacteria concentrations have led to the impairment (e.g., closures of shellfisheries and recreational beaches) of coastal waters. Although many previous studies have suggested that wastewater inputs can lead to elevated fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) concentrations in surface waters, few studies have quantified wastewater-associated FIB exports at the watershed scale. The goal of this study was to estimate bacterial exports at the watershed scale based on wastewater management approach (septic vs. sewer). Six watersheds (three exclusively on septic and three exclusively served by a sewer system) were selected for water quality assessment and comparison. Streams were monitored approximately monthly from August 2011 to June 2012 during baseflow conditions. Additionally, three storms were monitored. Samples were collected in sterile 100-mL bottles and analyzed for Escherichia coli concentrations. Discharge from streams was measured and bacterial exports were estimated by multiplying discharge by E. coli concentration. The results revealed that (1) during baseflow conditions, septic watersheds contained elevated stream discharge and E. coli concentrations and exports as compared to sewer watersheds; (2) warmer months had elevated E. coli watershed exports compared to colder months in both septic and sewer watersheds; and (3) storms significantly increased watershed E. coli exports in both septic and sewer watersheds. Storms significantly increased watershed E. coli exports in both septic and sewered watersheds, but E. coli counts in sewered watersheds were considerably greater likely due to greater impervious surface coverage and or leaky sewer infrastructure. These findings in conjunction with previous studies suggest that septic systems may play a pivotal role in the delivery of FIB to receiving waters, particularly during baseflow conditions.

Abstract

The presence of resonance structures in neutron induced reaction cross sections is the basis of Neutron Resonance Transmission Analysis (NRTA) and Neutron Resonance Capture Analysis (NRCA). NRTA and NRCA are powerful non-destructive methods for determining the elemental and isotopic composition of materials and objects. Both methods are non-invasive and do not require any sample preparation. They mostly result in a negligible induced radioactivity of the objects. This is due to the relatively high detection efficiency and the neutron energy spectrum that is needed. The energy positions of the resonance profiles provide qualitative information about the composition, while the contents of the observed resonance peaks in a capture spectrum or the dips in a neutron transmission spectrum give quantitative information about the bulk composition. In this contribution the basic principles of NRTA and NRCA are discussed and a review of applications is given, with an emphasis on studies of archaeological objects and artefacts by NRCA at the time-of-flight facility GELINA.

Abstract

This paper presents off-line and on-line orientation results obtained with the new on line nuclear orientation device NICOLE in CERN. Magnetic moments of 187,185Pt g and 186Ir m, electric quadrupole moment ratios between Pt isotopes with mass number 185, 187 and 189, the spin of the 2 h isomer of 186Ir and a new decay scheme of 184Au involving a metastable state are established. The shape variation versus mass number of the Pt isotopes leads to sign change of the spectroscopic quadrupole moment between A=187 and 185. © 1990 J.C. Baltzer A.G., Scientific Publishing Company.

6. The metal compositions of a series of Geistingen-type socketed axes

Abstract

The bulk metal compositions of twelve socketed axes of the Geistingen type are determined in a fully non-destructive manner by neutron resonance-capture analysis (NRCA). These axes named after a hoard found in Geistingen, a Belgian village along the Dutch-Belgium part of the river Meuse, are considered in the literature to be votive or prestigious objects from the Late Bronze Age. They contain considerable amounts of antimony, arsenic, silver and nickel, adding up to 6–16 wt%. Seven axes have no detectable, or little tin; the other five objects contain 6–12 wt% tin. The compositions of the Geistingen axes are evidence for a further example of the return to the Early Bronze Age practice of smelting fahlore related minerals. In addition time-of-flight neutron diffraction (TOF-ND) was carried out on two of these axes to get information about the crystalline structure, the occurrence of sulfides and oxides, the lead content and intermetallic compounds. The diffraction lines show a splitting related to two solid solutions in α-phase copper, which is explained with a simple solidification model.

Abstract

We present a measurement of semi-inclusive spin asymmetries for positively and negatively charged hadrons from deep inelastic scattering of polarised muons on polarised protons and deuterons in the range $0.003$1 GeV$^2$. Compared to our previous publication on this subject, with the new data the statistical errors have been reduced by nearly a factor of two. From these asymmetries and our inclusive spin asymmetries we determine the polarised quark distributions of valence quarks and non-strange sea quarks at $Q^2$=10 GeV$^2$. The polarised $u$ valence quark distribution, $\Delta u_v(x)$, is positive and the polarisation increases with $x$. The polarised $d$ valence quark distribution, $\Delta d_v(x)$, is negative and the non-strange sea distribution, $\Delta \bar q(x)$, is consistent with zero over the measured range of $x$. We find for the first moments $\int_0^1 \Delta u_v(x) dx = 0.77 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.08$, $\int_0^1 \Delta d_v(x) dx = -0.52 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.09$ and $\int_0^1 \Delta \bar q(x) dx= 0.01 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.03$, where we assumed $\Delta \bar u(x) = \Delta \bar d(x)$. Abstract

Parts of four Roman bronze water taps, excavated in The Netherlands consisting of two cylinders and two cylinder housings, were non-destructively investigated by neutron resonance capture analysis and by time-of-flight neutron diffraction. The two complementary neutron methods have been, for the first time, combined for providing a comprehensive alloy characterization of intact, undisturbed archaeological bronze objects. Bulk chemical analyses and phase analyses of the copper alloys were carried out in order to establish relations and differences among the taps, and to address questions of standardization and fabrication.

Abstract

We present a new measurement of the virtual photon proton asymmetry $A_1^{\rm p}$ from deep inelastic scattering of polarized muons on polarized protons in the kinematic range $0.0008 < x < 0.7$ and $0.2 < Q^{2} < 100$ GeV$^{2}$. With this, the statistical uncertainty of our measurement has improved by a factor of $2$ compared to our previous measurements. The spin-dependent structure function $g_{1}^{\rm p}$ is determined for the data with $Q^{2} > 1$ GeV$^{2}$. A perturbative QCD evolution in next-to-leading order is used to determine $g_1^{\rm p}(x)$ at a constant $Q^2$. At $Q^{2} = 10$ GeV$^{2}$ we find, in the measured range, $\int_{0.003}^{0.7} g_{1}^{\rm p}(x){\rm d}x = 0.139 \pm 0.006~({\rm stat})\pm 0.008~({\rm syst)} \pm 0.006~({\rm evol})$. The value of the first moment $\Gamma_{1}^{\rm p} = \int_{0}^{1} g_{1}^{\rm p}(x){\rm d}x$ of $g_{1}^{\rm p}$ depends on the approach used to describe the behaviour of $g_{1}^{\rm p}$ at low $x$. We find that the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule is violated. With our published result for $\Gamma_{1}^{\rm d}$ we confirm the Bjorken sum rule with an accuracy of $\approx 15\%$ at the one standard deviation level.

Abstract

We present a new measurement of the spin-dependent structure function $g_{1}^{\rm d}$ of the deuteron from deep inelastic scattering of 190 GeV polarized muons on polarized deuterons. The results are combined with our previous measurements of $g_{1}^{\rm d}$. A perturbative QCD evolution in next-to-leading order is used to compute $g_{1}^{\rm d}(x)$ at a constant $Q^{2}$. At $Q^{2} = 10$ GeV$^{2}$, we obtain a first moment $\Gamma_{1}^{\rm d} = \int_{0}^{1} g_{1}^{\rm d}{\rm d}x = 0.041 \pm 0.008$, a flavour-singlet axial charge of the nucleon $a_{0} = 0.30 \pm 0.08$, and an axial charge of the strange quark $a_{s} = -0.09 \pm 0.03$. Using our earlier determination of $\Gamma_{1}^{\rm p}$, we obtain $\Gamma_1^{\rm p} - \Gamma_1^{\rm n} = 0.183 \pm 0.035$ at $Q^2 = 10\,\mbox{GeV}^2$. This result is in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule which predicts $\Gamma_1^{\rm p} - \Gamma_1^{\rm n} = 0.186 \pm 0.002$ at the same $Q^2$.

Abstract

In neutron resonance capture analysis (NRCA), the detection of resonances in the neutron cross section as a function of neutron energy with the time of flight (TOF) technique is used to identify and quantify isotopes. In this paper the improvements of the measuring conditions are discussed in order to reduce the high background, especially in the keV range. The detection efficiency was generally improved, especially for resonances above 3 keV, which allowed the detection of lighter elements, usually having resonances only in the keV region. This broadened the number of applications that could be targeted with NRCA.

Abstract

In this paper we discuss the use of neutron resonances to determine the elemental composition of objects non-destructively. Resonances are observed from about 1 to 3000 eV by the time-of-flight technique using the pulsed neutron source of the GELINA facility in Geel (Belgium). Prompt capture γ-radiation is used to signal capture events. Some aspects of the neutron resonance capture analysis (NRCA) are compared with prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA).

Abstract

In this paper we discuss an analytical method, neutron-resonance-capture-analysis (NRCA), which uses the energies of resonances to recognize elements. These resonances are observed by the time-of-flight technique using a pulsed neutron beam at the GELINA facility in Geel (Belgium). The prompt γ-radiation, emitted after a neutron is captured, is used to signal that capture occurred. Areas of resonance peaks are used to evaluate the elemental composition of objects and materials quantitatively. A comparison of NRCA and PGAA is made and elucidated with experimental data resulting from measurements of bronze artefacts at GELINA and at the Budapest Neutron Centre.

Abstract

Neutron resonance capture analysis was applied to a bronze commemorative plaque from the West-African country Benin. By comparison with recently published element compositions of Benin memorial heads, the alloy of the plaque could be dated to the period 1725–1897 AD. In the analysis procedure, the object was not damaged, cleaned or altered, and very little long-lived radioactivity was induced.

Abstract

A muon beam polarimeter has been built for the SMC experiment at the CERN SPS, for muon energies of 100 to 200 GeV. The beam polarisation is determined from the energy spectrum of positrons from the decay μ+ → e+ νcνμ. A polarisation of - 0.82 is measured with a relative systematic accuracy of 3%.

Abstract

The probability of nuclei capturing neutrons reveals sharp peaks, so-called ‘resonances’, which occur at neutron energies that are specific for each element. These resonances are very suitable for analysing the elemental composition of objects. They are the basis of a new analytical method, ‘neutron resonance capture analysis’ (NRCA). This is a fully non-destructive method, which is applicable to almost all stable isotopes, determines the bulk elemental composition, does not require any sample preparation and results in a negligible residual activity. Recently, NRCA has been applied in a study of a series of bronze statuettes, obtained from the National Museum of Antiquity in Leiden (NL).

Abstract

The newly developed elemental analysis technique Neutron Resonance Capture Analysis (NRCA) was verified by analyzing a prehistoric bronze arrowhead with both NRCA and Instrumental Activation Analysis (INAA). In NRCA, elements are identified through their neutron resonance capture energies as determined through detection of prompt capture gamma-rays as a function of time of flight. The quantification is obtained from the resonance peak areas. Corrections are required for neutron-energy-dependent dead time and self-shielding, the latter also depending on Doppler broadening. The analysis program REFIT, of which the intended use is the determination of the resonance parameters, was used to this end. The agreement observed between INAA and NRCA results indicates that the NRCA results obtained are accurate.

Abstract

BackgroundAsthma, rhinitis and eczema often co-occur in children, but their interrelationships at the population level have been poorly addressed. We assessed co-occurrence of childhood asthma, rhinitis and eczema using unsupervised statistical techniques. MethodsWe included 17209 children at 4years and 14585 at 8years from seven European population-based birth cohorts (MeDALL project). At each age period, children were grouped, using partitioning cluster analysis, according to the distribution of 23 variables covering symptoms ever’ and in the last 12months’, doctor diagnosis, age of onset and treatments of asthma, rhinitis and eczema; immunoglobulin E sensitization; weight; and height. We tested the sensitivity of our estimates to subject and variable selections, and to different statistical approaches, including latent class analysis and self-organizing maps. ResultsTwo groups were identified as the optimal way to cluster the data at both age periods and in all sensitivity analyses. The first (reference) group at 4 and 8years (including 70% and 79% of children, respectively) was characterized by a low prevalence of symptoms and sensitization, whereas the second (symptomatic) group exhibited more frequent symptoms and sensitization. Ninety-nine percentage of children with comorbidities (co-occurrence of asthma, rhinitis and/or eczema) were included in the symptomatic group at both ages. The children’s characteristics in both groups were consistent in all sensitivity analyses. ConclusionAt 4 and 8years, at the population level, asthma, rhinitis and eczema can be classified together as an allergic comorbidity cluster. Future research including time-repeated assessments and biological data will help understanding the interrelationships between these diseases.

Abstract

A liquid hydrogen system has been developed that serves as a scatterer for the High-Acceptance Recoil Polarimeter (HARP). In order to satisfy the conflicting design requirements regarding safety, the volume of the system, the energy loss of the recoiling protons, and the location of the cryogenic unit, a self-supporting thin-walled modular cryogenic system has been developed. The system was successfully operated during two commissioning runs of HARP in a high-luminosity electron scattering environment. The operational parameters of the system have been continuously monitored and are quantitatively understood.

Abstract

A new search has been performed for parity violation in the compound nuclear states of ${}^{94}\mathrm{Nb}$ by measuring the helicity dependence of the neutron total cross section. Transmission measurements on a thick niobium target were performed by the time-of-flight method at the Manuel Lujan Neutron Scattering Center with a longitudinally polarized neutron beam in the energy range 32 to 1000 eV. A total of 18 p-wave resonances in ${}^{93}\mathrm{Nb}$ were studied with none exhibiting a statistically significant parity-violating longitudinal asymmetry. An upper limit of $1.0\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}7}$ eV (95% confidence level) was obtained for the weak spreading width ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{w}$ in ${}^{93}\mathrm{Nb}.$

Abstract

Parity nonconservation (PNC) was studied in {ital p}-wave resonances in Ag by measuring the helicity dependence of the neutron total cross section. Transmission measurements on natural Ag were performed in the energy range 32 to 422 eV with the time-of-flight method at the Manuel Lujan Neutron Scattering Center at Los Alamos National Laboratory. A total of 15 {ital p}-wave neutron resonances were studied in {sup 107}Ag and nine {ital p}-wave resonances in {sup 109}Ag. Statistically significant asymmetries were observed for eight resonances in {sup 107}Ag and for four resonances in {sup 109}Ag. Parity nonconserving asymmetries have been measured in $p$-wave resonances of ${}^{106}\mathrm{Pd}$ and ${}^{108}\mathrm{Pd}$. The data analysis requires knowledge of the neutron resonance parameters. Transmission and capture $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray yields were measured for ${E}_{n}=20$--2000 eV with the time-of-flight method at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE). A total of 28 resonances in ${}^{106}\mathrm{Pd}$ and 32 resonances in ${}^{108}\mathrm{Pd}$ were studied. The resonance parameters for ${}^{106}\mathrm{Pd}$ are new for all except one resonance. In ${}^{108}\mathrm{Pd}$ six new resonances were observed and the precision improved for many of the resonance parameters. A Bayesian analysis was used to assign orbital angular momentum for the resonances studied.

In this paper experiments are described that have led to the assignment of spins of a large number of s- and p-wave resonances in reactions of epithermal neutrons with the nuclei {sup 238}U and {sup 113}Cd. The gamma-ray spectra of the (n,{gamma}) reactions have been measured using the time-of-flight technique at the GELINA pulsed neutron source facility. For the present spin determinations we have exploited the fact that the population through gamma radiation of low-lying nuclear states from the compound nucleus is dependent on the resonance spin. Abstract

We describe an apparatus for studies of parity violation in neutron-nucleus scattering. This experiment requires longitudinally polarized neutrons from the Los Alamos Neutron Scattering Center over the energy range from 1 to 1000 eV, the ability to reverse the neutron spin without otherwise affecting the apparatus, the ability to detect neutrons at rates up to 500 MHz and an appropriate data acquisition system. We will discuss the neutron polarizer, fast neutron spin reverser, detector for transmitted neutrons and high rate data acquisition system.

Abstract

The CPLEAR collaboration has constructed a detector at CERN for an extensive programme of CP-, T- and CPT-symmetry studies using ${\rm K}^0$ and $\bar{\rm K}^0$ produced by the annihilation of $\bar{\rm p}$'s in a hydrogen gas target. The ${\rm K}^0$ and $\bar{\rm K}^0$ are identified by their companion products of the annihilation ${\rm K}^{\pm} \pi^{\mp}$ which are tracked with multiwire proportional chambers, drift chambers and streamer tubes. Particle identification is carried out with a liquid Cherenkov detector for fast separation of pions and kaons and with scintillators which allow the measurement of time of flight and energy loss. Photons are measured with a lead/gas sampling electromagnetic calorimeter. The required antiproton annihilation modes are selected by fast online processors using the tracking chamber and particle identification information. All the detectors are mounted in a 0.44 T uniform field of an axial solenoid of diameter 2 m and length 3.6 m to form a magnetic spectrometer capable of full on-line reconstruction and selection of events. The design, operating parameters and performance of the sub-detectors are described.}

Abstract

A large parity nonconserving longitudinal analyzing power was discovered in polarized-neutron transmission through Xe. An analyzing power of 4.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2% was observed in a $p$-wave resonance at ${E}_{n}=3.2$ eV. The measurement was performed with a liquid Xe target of natural isotopic abundance that was placed in the polarized epithermal neutron beam, flight path 2, at the Manuel Lujan Neutron Science Center. This apparatus was constructed by the TRIPLE Collaboration, and has been used for studies of parity symmetry in compound nuclear resonances. Part of the motivation of the experiment was to discover a nucleus appropriate for a sensitive test of time-reversal invariance in polarized-neutron transmission. The large analyzing power of the observed resonance may make it possible to design a test of time reversal invariance using a polarized-Xe target.

Abstract

The interference between CP-conserving Ks and K L → π + π − π 0 decay amplitudes was observed by studying the decay rate asymmetries between initial K 0 and K 0 separately for the phase space regions E CM ( π + ) > E CM ( π − ) and E CM ( π + ) E CM ( π − ). For the parameter λ we found Re(λ) = 0.036 ± 0.010(stat.) −0.003 +0.002 (syst.) and Im(λ) consistent with zero, leading to a branching ratio B = [4.1 −1.9 +2.5 (stat.) −0.6 +0.5 (syst.)] × 10 −7 for the CP-conserving K S → π + π − π 0 decay.

Abstract

In this journal the TRIPLE Collaboration published its first result on parity violation ~PV! at p-wave resonances of 238 U in a transmission experiment with polarized low energy ~10‐300 eV! neutrons using a neutron time-of-flight beam from the LANSCE facility @1#. In this work PV could be studied at many, that is 16, p-wave resonances. This experiment is therefore a considerable improvement with respect to pioneering experiments of this kind at Dubna in which PV has been studied at one or two resonances per isotope below 20 eV @2#. In the zero-spin nucleus 238 U the 1/2 2 p-wave resonances can be admixed with the 1/2 1 s-wave resonances due to PV weak nuclear interactions, and thus, may show PV effects. Strong enhancements of these PV effects occur due to ~i! the proximity of s and p resonances, and ~ii! by admixing a ~strong! s-wave resonance or several s-wave resonances into a weak p-wave resonance (G n @G n ). Although one might expect parity mixing between 3/2 2 and 3/2 1 compound nuclear levels of 239 U, there are no 3/2 1 neutron resonances in the reaction of low energy neutrons with 238 Ut o make parity violation manifest at the 3/2 2 p-wave resonances. The weak p-wave resonances can be distinguished easily from the strong s-wave resonances in the considered low energy range of the 238 U1n reaction; however, their spins ~1/2 and 3/2! are not known without further information.

Abstract

The CP violation parameter η+− is determined through the eigentime-dependent asymmetry in the rates of initially tagged K0 and K 0 decaying to π+π−. The obtained values are |η+−| = (2.312 ± 0.043stat. ± 0.030syst. ± 0.011τs) × 10−3 and Φ+− = 42.7° ± 0.9stat.° ± 0.6syst.° ± 0.9Δm° with Δ = (527.4 ± 2.9) × 10 7 h gs −1 measured in the same experiment using the semileptonic decay channel.

Abstract

The gamma decay of the highly excited nucleus of 114 Cd, formed by neutron capture, has been simulated numerically. The intensity of transitions between low-lying states was found to be dependent on the neutron resonance spin, as expected from the low-level population spin assignment method. The simulations are in excellent agreement with recent measurements of neutron p-wave resonance spin assignments in 113 Cd. The simulations support the work of spin assignment necessary for the interpretation of parity nonconservation measurements.

Abstract

Charge symmetry breaking in np elastic scattering at 347 MeV has been measured with high precision. From fits of the measured asymmetry curves over the angular range 53.4{degree} {le} {theta}{sub cm} {le} 86.9{degree}, the difference in the center-of-mass zero-crossing angles of the analyzing powers was determined to be 0.438{degree} {+-} 0.054{degree} (stat.) {+-} 0.051{degree} (syst.). Using the experimentally determined slope of the analyzing power, dA/d{theta} = ({minus}1.35 {+-} 0.05) {times} 10{sup {minus}2} deg{sup {minus}1}, this is equivalent to {Delta}A = [59 {+-} 7(stat.) {+-} 7(syst.) {+-} 2(syst.)] {times} 10{sup {minus}4}. Predictions of nucleon-nucleon interaction models based on meson exchange agree well with this result.

Abstract

Antiproton annihilation at rest in gaseous hydrogen (16 bar pressure) to the final states ρ(770)X andf2(1270)X, whereX stands for one or more neutral mesons, has been studied at LEAR using the CPLEAR detector. Relative branching ratios are given forX =π0,2π0, 3π0 ω in the ρ case, and forX =π0, η in thef2 case. The annihilation channel\(\bar pp \to \rho 3\pi ^0 \) has not been measured before. The fraction of P-wave annihilation is deduced from the ratiof2π0/ρπ0 to be 0.38±0.07, in good agreement with the result previously obtained by CPLEAR from the ratioK+K-/π+π-.

Abstract

The resonance structure in neutron induced reaction cross sections can be used to determine the elemental compositions of materials or objects. The occurrence of resonances is the basis of neutron resonance capture analysis (NRCA) and neutron resonance transmission analysis (NRTA). NRCA and NRTA are fully non-destructive methods to determine the bulk elemental composition without the need of any sample preparation and resulting in a negligible residual activity. They have been applied to determine the elemental composition of archaeological objects and to characterize reference materials used for cross section measurements. For imaging applications a position sensitive neutron detector has been developed within the ANCIENT CHARM project. The detector is based on a 10 × 10 array of 6Li-glass scintillators mounted on a pitch of 2.5 mm, resulting in a 25 × 25 mm2 active area. The detector has been tested at the time-of-flight facility GELINA and used at the ISIS spallation source to study cultural heritage objects.

Abstract

Two-charged-pion correlations were studied in\(\bar p\)p(→2π*2π−nπ0,n≥0) annihilations at rest with the CPLEAR detector at the Low-Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR). A strong enhancement was found in the production of pairs of like-sign pions with a small value of the relative fourmomentumQ, with respect to pairs of unlike-sign pions. The observed enhancement was interpreted as a consequence of the Bose-Einstein symmetrization of the two-pion wave function. The data are well represented by a correlation function parametrized as a double-Gaussian; an exponential parametrization is also statistically acceptable. The value of the correlation strength is found to be >1. The high-quality large data samples together with the ability for K± identification and final-state separation allowed the study of systematic effects impacting on theQ dependence of the correlation function and on the extracted space parameters of the pion sources.

Abstract

Calculations of polarized neutron-polarized [sup 3]He scattering are presented for the transverse and longitudinal total cross-section differences [Delta][sigma][sub [ital T]] and [Delta][sigma][sub [ital L]] in the energy range [ital E][sub [ital n]]=0.1 to 10 MeV. Predictions made from phase-shift analyses, [ital R]-matrix analysis, and a multichannel resonating group-model calculation are compared. The predictions are in qualitative agreement and show that polarized neutron-polarized [sup 3]He scattering is sensitive to the level structure of [sup 4]He in the excitation energy range 20--30 MeV.

Abstract

A muon beam polarimeter was built for the SMC experiment at the CERN SPS, for beam energies of 100 and 190 GeV. The beam polarisation is determined from the asymmetry in the elastic scattering off the polarised electrons of a ferromagnetic target whose magnetisation is periodically reversed. At muon energies of 100 and 190 GeV the measured polarisation is P-mu = -0.80 +/- 0.03 (stat.) +/- 0.02 (syst.) and P-mu = - 0.797 +/- 0.011 (stat.) +/- 0.012 (syst.), respectively. These results agree with measurements of the beam polarisation using a shape analysis of the decay positron energy spectrum. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

Neutron resonances are the signature signals of a non-destructive elemental and isotopic analysis technique in archaeological sciences. We report on Neutron Resonance Transmission Analysis and its capabilities as a bulk elemental imaging technique to test the homogeneity of samples and to localize elements of interest in archaeological samples and museum objects. A high neutron flux is required for imaging in order to achieve reasonable spatial resolution and to keep measurement times within realistic limits. A modular system for neutron resonance transmission analysis has been designed and installed at the INES beamline of the ISIS spallation neutron source as a part of the ANCIENT CHARM project. The main component is a neutron position sensitive transmission detector which is based on a 10 × 10 array of 6Li-glass crystals mounted on a pitch of 2.5 mm, resulting in a 25 × 25 mm 2 active area. Transmission spectra are obtained by a measurement of the flight time of epithermal neutrons passing through an object. The transmission dips observed in a time-of-flight spectrum can be used to identify and quantify specific nuclides. In this paper the technique is described together with the data reduction and analysis procedures. In addition, preliminary results obtained from measurements on cultural heritage samples are discussed. © 2011 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Abstract

The parity-nonconserving longitudinal asymmetry [ital P] has been measured in nonresonant regions in [sup 232]Th for neutron energies in the range 6--86 eV. The measured value of [ital P][sub nonres]=(9.8[plus minus]21.7)[times]10[sup [minus]6] is consistent with statistical descriptions of parity violation.

Abstract

Bose-Einstein (BE) correlations between like-sign charged pions were studied in pp annihilations at rest into four-prong events, using data taken with the CPLEAR detector at LEAR (CERN). A strong enhancement was found in the production of pairs of like-sign pions of similar momenta, with respect to the pairs of unlike-sign pions. The observed BE- enhancement was used to extract the values for the strength λ of the effect and the radius r of the pion emitting source. The extracted value of λ >l is of relevant importance and clearly does not depend on the assumed parametrization of the correlation function. The influence of the normalization and fitting procedure, the detector resolution, the resonances production and decay and the neutral-pion multiplicity cuts, on the size of the pion source and the strength of the effect was investigated.

Abstract

We report on the first measurement of the spin-dependent structure function g1d of the deuteron in the deep inelastic scattering of polarised muons off polarised deuterons, in the kinematical range 0.006222. The first moment, Γ1d=sh{phonetic}01 g1d dx=0.023±0.020 (stat.) ± 0.015 (syst.), is smaller than the prediction of the Ellis-Jaffe sum rules. Using earlier measurements of g1p, we infer the first moment of the spin-dependent neutron structure function g1n. The difference Γ1p-Γ1n=0.20 ±0.05 (stat.) ± 0.04 (syst.) agrees with the prediction of the Bjorken sum rule, Γ1p-Γ1n=0.191 ±0.002.

Abstract

The epithermal polarized-neutron beam facility used for tests of fundamental symmetries is described. The initial unpolarized beam is obtained from the spallation source at the Los Alamos Neutron Scattering Center. Characteristics of the polarized and unpolarized beams are described, as well as design and performance of a fast-spin reversal system, neutron flux monitor and target cooler. Experimental results for polarized-neutron transmission experiments are given to illustrate the overall quality of the system.

Abstract

The technique of static low-temperature nuclear orientation has been used to investigate the nuclear electric quadrupole interaction of implanted 182Re (64h) and 183Re in thin foils of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) at temperatures down to 5 mK. The isotopes were recoil-implanted at a temperature of 700°C in order to limit the amount of lattice damage. The fraction of nuclei experiencing a large electric field gradient was considerably improved after two successive annealing sessions at 1200°C, from 1.0(0.6)% before annealing to 4.5(0.8)% after 6h and to 11.3(2.0)% after 162 h annealing. The electric field gradient for Re in HOPG is deduced to be Vzz = +5.4(2.6)·1022V/m2.

Abstract

We present the results of the spin asymmetries $A_1$ of the proton and the deuteron in the kinematic region extending down to $x=6\cdot 10^{-5}$ and $Q^2=0.01$ GeV$^2$. The data were taken with a dedicated low $x$ trigger, which required hadron detection in addition to the scattered muon, so as to reduce the background at low $x$. The results complement our previous measurements and the two sets are consistent in the overlap region. No sig\-ni\-fi\-cant spin effects are found in the newly explored region.

Abstract

A number of isotopes have been implanted into thin foils of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite in order to investigate the possibility of using this material as a catcher for on-line LT-NO experiments to measure the quadrupole interaction of short-lived nuclei. Pure nuclear electric quadrupole interaction of nuclei of188,189Ir,203Hg,69mZn,182m,183Re and111In has been observed. Values for the electric field gradient along theC-axis are: +10.0(3) +8.2(9), +5.4(2.6) and +1.5(1)·1022 V/m2, respectively, for Ir, Hg, Re and In in graphite. A value ofQ=+0.79(6) b is deduced for the quadrupole moment of189Ir. Two theoretical models provide a better understanding of the origin of the electric field gradient in graphite. The first is based on induced electric polarization of graphite atoms, while in the second one hybridization of impurity and graphite electronic wave functions is calculated.

Abstract

The depolarization of epithermal neutrons in a thick single crystal of ferromagnetic holmium has been measured and analyzed with a model of neutron precession through a highly correlated array of magnetic domains. The large parity violation in the 0.734-eV p-wave resonance in $^{139}\mathrm{La}$ was used to analyze the neutron polarization, and represents an application of parity violation in nuclear resonances to a measurement in condensed-matter physics.
