We describe briefly the properties of the recently completed Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), along with its first light imager SALTICAM. Using this instrument, we present 4.3 hr of high speed unfiltered photometric observations of the eclipsing polar SDSSJ015543.40+002807.2 with time resolution as short as 112 ms, the highest quality observations of this kind of any polar to date. The system was observed during its high luminosity state. Two accreting poles are clearly seen in the eclipse light curve. The binary system parameters have been constrained: the white dwarf mass is at the low end of the range expected for cataclysmic variables. Correlations between the positions of the accretion regions on or near the surface of the white dwarf and the binary system parameters were established. The sizes of the accretion regions and their relative movement from eclipse to eclipse were estimated: they are typically 4-7 deg depending on the mass of the white dwarf. The potential of these observations will only fully be realised when low state data of the same kind are obtained and the contact phases of the eclipse of the white dwarf are measured.

The molten salt ${3\mathrm{K}\mathrm{N}\mathrm{O}}_{3}$-2Ca(${\mathrm{NO}}_{3}$${)}_{2}$ has been studied in the frequency range 5 mHz40 GHz and for temperatures 10 KT500 K using impedance spectroscopy. It is found that in the microwave regime the dynamic conductivity traces the primary response. In the radio- and audio-frequency ranges the mobile ion relaxation becomes increasingly decoupled and the time scale and stretching of the response as determined from electrical modulus spectra differ from those obtained by spectroscopies probing the structural response. For T\ensuremath{\gtrsim}360 K minima are detected in the dielectric loss that make possible a comparison with recent mode-coupling theories of the glass transition. The absence of analogous minima in nonionic supercooled liquids is discussed. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

The effects were studied of three different prostaglandin analogues on lysosomal cathepsin D and acid phosphatase activities in the corpus luteum of the chacma baboon (Papio ursinus). Lysosomal latency was found to be increased by these agents, as well as the total particulate activities of both enzymes. A comparison of total post-treatment cathepsin D values with control values showed a significant increase in activity with time; this did not apply to acid phosphatase. Concomitant electron microscopic studies showed a higher cellular content of lysosomes, consistent with the greater particulate activities recorded. Definitive evidence of progressive ultrastructural changes was consistently found in corpora lutea from prostaglandin analogue-treated baboons. It is proposed that the mechanism of luteolysis induced by prostaglandin analogues in this primate species is based on induction of the formation of primary lysosomes which cause cellular degeneration through autosegregation and enzymatic digestion of cell organelles in secondary lysosomes.

Bupropion is increasingly used for nicotine withdrawal and in the treatment of major depression, especially in bipolar patients. We present the case of a 38-year-old female schizoaffective, rapid-cycling patient treated with bupropion for a depressive episode. After 4 weeks of successful treatment (300 mg/day), the patient developed a circumscribed unilateral impairment of sensory trigeminal nerve function. Symptoms completely recovered after discontinuation of bupropion. When re-exposed to bupropion, mild symptoms reappeared, leading to final discontinuation of bupropion. With this natural on-off-on-off design, a causative role of bupropion for trigeminal impairment in this patient can be assumed. To our knowledge, a similar side-effect of bupropion has not been described to date.
