Inclusive differential cross sections dsigma(pA)/dx(F) and dsigma(pA)/dp(t)(2) for the production of K-S(0), Lambda, and (U) over bar particles are measured at HERA in proton-induced reactions on C, Al, Ti, and W targets. The incident beam energy is 920 GeV, corresponding to roots = 41.6 GeV in the proton-nucleon system. The ratios of differential cross sections dsigma(pA)(K-S(0))/dsigma(pA)(Lambda) and dsigma(pA)((U) over bar)/dsigma(pA) (Lambda) are measured to be 6.2 +/- 0.5 and 0.66 +/- 0.07, respectively, for x(F) approximate to -0.06. No significant dependence upon the target material is observed. Within errors, the slopes of the transverse momentum distributions da,Ald t also show no significant dependence upon the target material. The dependence of the extrapolated total cross sections sigma(pA) on the atomic mass A of the target material is discussed, and the deduced cross sections per nucleon sigma(pN) are compared with results obtained at other energies.

Using data collected by the HERA-B experiment, we have measured the fraction of J\psi's produced via radiative chi_c decays in interactions of 920 GeV protons with carbon and titanium targets. We obtained R_{\chi_c} = 0.32 \pm 0.06_{stat} \pm 0.04_{sys} for the fraction of J\psi from chi_c decays averaged over proton-carbon and proton-titanium collisions. This result is in agreement with previous measurements and is compared with theoretical predictions., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figs

Using the HERA-B detector, the b-bbar production cross section has been measured in 920 GeV proton collisions on carbon and titanium targets. The b-bbar production was tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into J/psi, by exploiting the longitudinal separation of J/psi->ll decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction. Both $e^+e^-$ and $\mu^+\mu^-$ channels have been reconstructed and the combined analysis yields the cross section $\sigma(b \bar b) = 32 ^{+14}_{-12} (stat) ^{+6}_{-7} (sys) nb/nucleon$., Comment: 22 pages, 10 Postscript figures

Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e- storage ring DORIS II, we have searched for the real and imaginary part of the electric dipole formfactor d_tau of the tau lepton in the production of tau pairs at q^2=100 GeV^2. This is the first direct measurement of this CP violating formfactor. We applied the method of optimised observables which takes into account all available information on the observed tau decay products. No evidence for CP violation was found, and we derive the following results: Re(d_tau)=(1.6+-.9)*10^(-16) ecm and Im(d_tau)=(-0.2+-0.8)*10^(-16) ecm, where statistical and systematic errors have been combined., 8 pages, 5 figures (10 subfigures)

The HERA-B experiment is designed for observation of CP violation in the B-meson system at the HERA machine in DESY. The data acquisition and triggering system must cope with a half million detector channels, a 40 MHz interaction rate and a signal to background ratio of 10/sup -10/. A highly selective multi-level trigger and high bandwidth data acquisition system has been designed and is currently being implemented. The second-level event buffer and mid-level trigger switch will be built from DSP boards carrying SHARC processors. The second and third level trigger code will run on a farm of 100-200 Pentium processors under Linux. The switch to the 4th level trigger farm will be based on Fast-Ethernet.

Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have found evidence for the production of the excited charmed baryon state Λc(2593)+ in the channel Λc+π+π−. Its mass was determined to be (2594.6±0.9±0.4) MeV/c2, and the natural width measured to be Γ = (2.9−2.1−1.4+2.9+1.8) MeV. The production cross section times the branching ratios of σ(e+e− → Λc(2593)+X) × Br(Λc(2593)+ → Λc+π+π−) × Br(Λc+ → pK−π+) was measured to be (0.25−0.13+0.24 ±0.13) pb. The fractions of Λc(2593)+ decays proceeding through the Σc0π+ and Σc++π− channels were determined to be 0.29±0.10±0.11 and 0.37±0.12±0.13, respectively.

The Pentatellurides M2Te5 (M = Al, Ga, In): Polymorphism, Structural Relations, and Homogeneity Ranges The hitherto unknown crystal structure of the black solid Al2Te5 is solved by Rietveld refinement of X-Ray powder data: a = 1359.29(3) pm, b = 415.27(1) pm, c = 983.92(2) pm, β = 126.97(1)°, space group: C2/m (no. 12), Z = 2. In contrast to Ga2Te5 and In2Te5Al2Te5 is very sensitive to hydrolysis. It can formally be described as Te[AlTe3/3Te1/1]2, containing layers made up of chains of cis-edge-sharing AlTe4 tetrahedra [AlTe3/3Te1/1] and additional Te atoms. In2Te5-I and In2Te5-II are characterized by layers with a similar topology, Ga2Te5 however is different. It has no layer structure, but contains chains of trans-edge-sharing GaTe4-tetrahedra and additional Te-atoms according to the formulation Te[GaTe4/2]2. It can be regarded as a variant of the TlSe type structure. From heterogeneous samples with the nominal composition In0.5Ga1.5Te5 single crystals of a new stacking variant (In2Te5-III) of the In2Te5 structure type can be isolated. The composition of the crystals, determined by single crystal structure analysis, is In0.77Ga1.23Te5, with a = 1613.2(3) pm, b = 424.6(1) pm, c = 1330.5(2) pm, β = 97.39(1)°, space group C2/c (Nr. 15), Z = 4. This structure type is not yet known for unsubstituted In2Te5. The range of homogeneity for Ga2Te5 with respect to the substitution of Gallium by Indium is given by Ga2-xInxTe5 (x < 0.4). Within the limits of experimental error however a substitution of Te in Ga2Te5 by Se cannot be detected.

Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have made two measurements of the mixing parameter χd using kaons as flavour tags. Using D∗+ K± correlations we found χd = 0.20 ± 0.13 ± 0.12 and from the study of (D∗+l−) K± correlations we obtained χd = 0.19 ± 0.07 ± 0.09. The branching ratio for B → D∗+ X has been updated: Br(B → D∗+ X) = (19.6 ± 1.9)%. We have also determined the average multiplicity of charged kaons in B0 decays to be 0.78 ± 0.08.

The partial decay width into electrons, Γ ee , of the ϒ(1S) and ϒ(2S) resonances have been measured with the detector ARGUS at thee+e− storage ring DORISII of DESY. Applying the formula of Kuraev and Fadin for the radiative corrections we find: Γ ee (ϒ(1S))= (1.32±0.04±0.03) keV and Γ ee (ϒ(2S))=(0.52±0.03±0.01) keV. The total decay width of the ϒ(4S) resonance and its partial width into electrons have been determined as well. Fitting the data with a generalized Breit-Wigner function with an energy dependent decay width Γ(s) and a mass shift functionm(s), we obtain the following resonance parameters: Γ(M2)=(10.0±2.8±2.7) MeV, Γ ee =(0.28±0.05±0.01)keV andB ee =(2.77±0.50±0.49)·10−5. We argue that the disagrecment of this result with the world average originates from our more adequate parametrization of the observed ϒ(4S) resonance cross section.

Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e - storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have studied lepton energy spectra in ~- decays. We present a "pseudo-rest-frame" technique in which the second r in the event, decaying into a heavy hadronic system, is used as reference. This method allows for the first measurement of the Michel Parameter 7/in ~- decays. We also determine the Michel Parameter p in 7" --~ e~u decays with a precision comparable to the present world average. The measured values of the parameters p = 0.735 4- 0.036 4- 0.020 and r 1 = 0.03 4- 0.18 4- 0.12 are in good agreement with standard V-A coupling at the ~--~,-W vertex.

Using the detector ARGUS at the e+e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have observed the decays Λc+ → Ξ−K+π+ and Λc+ → Ξ∗0K+ and obtained evidence for the decay Ξc0 → ΛKs0. All three of these decays are of interest as they provide information about W-exchange processes. The products of cross sections and branching ratios for Λc+ → Ξ−K+π+ and Λc+ → Ξ∗0K+ are (1.7±0.3±0.3) pb and (0.6±0.2±0.1) pb, respectively, which implies that (35±17) % of the Ξ−K+π+ final state is generated through a two-body decay via intermediate W-exchange. The product of production cross section and branching ratio for Ξc0 → Λ Ks0 is (2.1 ± 1.0 ± 0.6) pb.

Polarization in the exclusive decay B → J/ψK ∗ was measured using the ARGUS detector at the e+e− storage ring DORIS II. The ratio of the transverse to the total decay width was found to be ΓT/Γ = 0.03±0.16±0.15. This measurement demonstrates that the B 0 → J/ψK ∗0 decay channel can be effectively used for CP violation studies.

Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring we have investigated the Lorentz structure of the electroweak interaction in semi-hadronic τ decays. Spin correlations in the process e + e − → τ + τ − → v τ π + π 0 v τ π − π 0 are exploited for a measurement of the normalized product of the vector ( g V ) and axial vector ( g A ) couplings of the τ lepton, γin AV = 2 Re {g A g V ∗ } (|g V | 2 ) . The correlations are sensitive to the product of the couplings in both τ decays: γ AV 2 = γ AV (τ − → ν τ W − ) AV = −h(v τ )h( v τ ) . The measured value, γ AV 2 = 1.044±0.057±0.060, determines the relative sign of the neutrino helicities. Assuming CP invariance, the absolute value | γ AV | = 1.022±0.028±0.030 was found to be incellent agreement with the Standard Model. The contribution of scalar ( g s ) or pseudoscalar ( g P ) couplings was also investigated. No evidence for a scalar-like coupling was found.

Using the ARGUS detector at thee+e− storage ring DORIS II, flavour-dependent kaon production inB meson decays has been studied. Using the leptons as flavour tags, it has been possible to separately measure the multiplicities ofK+,K− andKs0 in inclusiveB decays and in semileptonicB decays. The kaon production in semileptonicB decays was further used to estimate the ratio of charmed decays over all decays, and thus also the fraction of charmlessB decays.

Using the ARGUS detector at the e + e − storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have studied the decay B 0 → D ∗+ l − v by exploiting a partial D ∗+ reconstruction technique. The branching ratio for this mode was thereby determined to be (4.5 ± 0.3 ± 0.4)%. Using the corresponding sample of tagged B 0 mesons, we measured the B 0 B 0 mixing parameter to be r d = 0.194 ± 0.062 ± 0.054, a result only weakly dependent upon the ratio of semileptonic widths for and production rates of B 0 and B + mesons. We have also determined the branching ratio Br ( B 0 → X l − v to be (9.3 ± 1.1 ± 1.5)%. By comparing the results for full and partial D ∗+ reconstuction we found the absolute branching ratios for D 0 → K − π + and D 0 → K − π + π + π − to be (4.5 ± 0.6 ± 0.4)% and (7.9 ± 1.5 ± 0.9)%, respectively.

Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have observed a new charmed baryon state in the channel Λc+π+π−. (All references to a specific charged state also imply the charge conjugate state.) The mass of this state was measured to be (2626.6 ± 0.5 ± 1.5) MeV/c2. The product of the production cross section and branching ratio for this channel was determined to be (11.5 ± 2.5 ± 3.0) pb, and the natural width estimated to be smaller than 3.2 MeV/c2 at 90% CL.

Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e− storage ring DORIS II, we have determined the Michel parameters ϱ and ξ of τ → μν ν and τ → eν ν decays. From a data sample with 333 events/pb around s = 10 GeV , we select 3230 events e + e − → τ + τ − → (μ ± μ μ )( e ǂv v ) and determine ϱ from the e and μ momentum spectra and ξ from the correlations between e and μ momenta. For ϱ we obtain ϱτ→e = 0.79 ± 0.08 ± 0.06 and ϱτ→μ = 0.76 ± 0.08 in accordance with the V - A structure of the decays. The momentum correlations are only sensitive to the product ξτ→eξτ→μ. Setting ξτ→e = ξτ→μ, we obtain |ξτ| = 0.90 ± 0.15 ± 0.10 also in accordance with V - A. The updated decay fractions are B(τ → e v v ) = (17.5 ± 0.3 ± 0.5)% and B(τ → μv v ) = (17.4 ± 0.3 ± 0.5)% .

Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS-II electron-positron storage ring at DESY, we have investigated the exclusive decay D ∗+ → D 0 π + , D 0 → K S 0 π + π − . From a partial wave analysis of the KS0π+π− system we find that (71.8± 4.2 ± 3.0)% are D 0 → K ∗− π + and (22.7 ± 3.2 ± 0.9)% are D 0 → K 0 ϱ 0 with a relative phase of (−137 ± 7 ± 3)° between the channels. The remaining fraction can be described by several channels involving excited resonances, but not by a three-body phase space decay, thus giving first evidence for D0 decays into K 0 ∗ (1430) − π + , K 0 f 0 (1975), K 0 f 2 (1270) , and K 0 f 0 (1400) .

The inclusive production cross sections of η′ (958) andf o (975) mesons are measured ine + e − annihilation in the nonresonant continuum around $$\sqrt s = 10$$ GeV and in decays of the υ resonances using the ARGUS detector. For η′ (958) mesons, a production ratio of η′ (958)/ηdir=0.35±0.24, with ηdir=η−BR(η′→ηX)·η′, is determined in direct υ(1S) decays, which can be partially explained by the pseudoscalar singlet/octet mixing. Forf o (975) production, we obtain a production ratio off o (975)/p(770)°=0.17±0.030 in direct υ(1S) decays. In its production features, thef o (975) behaves like an ordinary meson, though aK $$\bar K$$ molecule nature cannot be excluded. The substantial production yield of thef o (975) meson demonstrates the important effect of feeddown from mesons beyond the basic multiples on pseudoscalar and vector meson production.

Using the detector ARGUS at thee + e − storage ring DORIS II, we have investigated inclusive momentum spectra of charged pions, kaons, and protons from decays of the υ(4S) meson. The kaon spectra have been measured in two independent ways, by coherently exploiting the detector's particle identification capabilities, and by detecting decays in-flight. The extracted mean multiplicities for charged hadrons are 7.17±0.05±0.14 pions, 1.56±0.03±0.05 kaons and 0.110±0.010±0.007 protons per υ(4S) decay, where pions and protons fromK and Δ decays have been subtracted.

A method is proposed for the determination of the Lorentz structure of the electroweak interaction in semi-hadronic τ decays. Spin correlations in the process $$e^ + e^ - \to \tau ^ + \tau ^ - \to \bar v_\tau \pi ^ + \pi ^0 v_\tau \pi ^ - \pi ^0 $$ are exploited for a measurement of the normalized product, γAV = 2Re{gAgV*}/(|gV|2 + |gV|2), of the vector (gV) and axial vector (gA) coupling of the τ lepton. The contribution of scalar (gS) or pseudo-scalar (gP) couplings is also investigated. Since in the above process the direction of flight of the τ leptons can be reconstructed up to a twofold ambiguity a likelihood method using the whole kinematic information can be employed. The matrix element entering the likelihood function has been evaluated in terms of the momenta and angles of the observed pions. The sensitivity of the derived method in ane+e− energy region around 10 GeV has been investigated for the ARGUS experiment using Monte Carlo simulations.

Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS IIe +e− storage ring we have studied the three-pion hadronic final state in the decay τ- → π-π-π+ v τ. From about 7500 events we conclude that the three-pion system is dominated by theJ P=1+ resonancea 1 (1260) decaying preferentially via ρ0π-. Our data restrict a possible ρπ contribution of three-pion states without intermediate resonances to less than 6% at 95% CL. Fitting a model by Isgur et al. to the data yields $$m_{a_1 } = (1.211 \pm 0.007 \pm _{0.0}^{0.050} ) GeV/c^2 $$ and $$\Gamma _{a_1 } = (0.446 \pm 0.0021 \pm _{0.0}^{0.140} ) GeV/c^2 $$ . The second errors reflect the model dependence of the result. This is the currently most significant determination of thea 1 resonance parameters. The ratio ofS- andD-wave amplitudes for the ρ0π- intermediate state of thea 1 − decay at the nominala 1 − mass was found to beD/S=−0.11±0.02. Using thisD/S ratio we update our former measurement of the parity violating asymmetry parameter $$\gamma _{AV} = 2g_A g_V /(g_A^2 + g_V^2 )$$ to 1.25±0.23± 0.08 0.15 . The branching ratio of the decay τ- → π-π-π+ v τ is determined to be Br(τ- → π-π-π+ v τ)=(6.8±0.1±0.5)%.

Using the ARGUS detector at the e + e - storage ring using DORIS II at DESY, we have observed a new decay channel for the excited charm-strange meson D s1 (2536) + →D∗ O K + . The production cross section for the D s 1 (2536) + decaying via this channel is measured to be σ ( D s1 (2536) + )· BR (D sl (2536) + →D∗ 0 K + )= 18±4±3 pb at E CM = 10.4 GeV. The mass of the D s 1 (2536) + is found to be 2535.2 ± 0.5±1.5 MeV/ c 2 in agreement with the value obtained from an analysis of the D s1 (2536) + →D∗ + K 0 s decay channel. The natural width is determined to be less than 3.9 MeV/ c 2 at 90%CL.

Die Kristallstruktur last sich als Variante (Hettotyp) des Bismut(III)-iodid-Typs beschreiben. Element—Element Bonds. VII. Intermolecular Interactions in Dihalogen(phenyl)stibanes In keeping with the literature dichloro(phenyl)stibane (1) may be obtained in a quantitative yield via a metathesis reaction between antimony(III) chloride and triphenylstibane; the dibromo (2) and diiodo (3) derivatives are synthesized by halogen exchange with phosphorus(III) bromide or sodium iodide, respectively. X-ray structure determinations at −120±3°C (R = 0,044/0,041/0,024) show the series of compounds to crystallize isotypically in the triclinic space group P1. The molecules are associated two-dimensionally by a moderately excentric η3-Sb··arene interaction and two Sb··halogen contacts each. Provided that the phenyl ligand is being substituted by its centre, the coordination geometry of the antimony atom may be described as a distorted octahedron. The crystal structure represents a variant (hettotype) of the bismuth(III) iodide type.

Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring, a new measurement of the mass of the τ lepton has been obtained. An analysis of the tau pseudomass spectrum for decays of the type τ− → π−π−π+ντ finds mτ = 1776.3±2.4±1.4 MeV/c2. This result also leads to an improvement of the upper limit on the ντ mass to mντ < 31 MeV/c2 at the 95% confidence level.

Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring, we have studied τ decays with one or three charged particles in the final state, obtaining the following values for the branching ratios: BR(τ−→e − $$\bar v_e v_\tau $$ )=(17.3±0.4±0.5)% BR(τ−→μ− $$\bar v_\mu v_\tau $$ )=(17.2±0.4±0.5)%,BR(τ−→π− v π)+BR(τ−→K − v π)=(11.7±0.6±0.8)% and BR(π−→3-prong)=(13.3±0.3±0.8)%. These measurements confirm the present world averages with a precision, in each case, comparable to the error on the combination of all previous results.

An analysis of the decay τ-→π-π0vτ has been performed using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring. The branching ratio has been determined to be Br(τ-→π-π0vτ=(22.6±0.4±0.9)%. The shape of the π-π0 invariant mass spectrum is found to be in good agreement with the predictions obtained using the conserved vector current (CVC) hypothesis, suggesting that the π-π0 system is produced in aJP=1− state. An analysis of the measured decay angular distribution of the pions with respect to the flight direction of the π-π0 system demonstrates the vector nature of the coupling at the τvτ vertex. With the assumption of zerovτ mass thevτ spin has been shown to be\(J_{v_\tau}= \tfrac{1}{2} \).

Using the ARGUS detector at thee + e − storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have observed the decaysD +→K − K 0π+π+ andD + →K − K 0π+π+. The branching ratios were determined to be BR(D +→K − K 0π+π+)=(1.0±0.5±0.3)% and BR(D + →K − K 0π+π+)/BR(D + →φπ+)=1.2±0.2±0.2. These decays are found to proceed mostly via the $$\bar K*^0 K*^ + $$ decay channel, with BR(D +→ $$\bar K*^0 K*^ + $$ )=2.6±0.8±0.7)% and BR(D + → $$\bar K*^0 K*^ + $$ )/BR(D + →φπ+)=1.5±0.4±0.4.
