International audience; The ground-state magnetic dipole moment of the neutron-rich O21 isotope has been measured via β-ray-detected nuclear magnetic resonance (β-NMR) spectroscopy by using a spin-polarized secondary beam of O21 produced from the Ne22 primary beam. From the present measurement, the g factor |gexp(Og.s.21)|=0.6036(14) has been determined. Based on the comparison of this value with Schmidt values, we unambiguously confirm the νd5/2 configuration with spin and parity assignments Iπ=5/2+ for the O21 ground state, suggested by previously reported studies. Consequently, the magnetic moment has been determined as μexp(Og.s.21)=(−)1.5090(35)μN. The obtained experimental magnetic moment is in good agreement with the predictions of the shell-model calculations using the USD, YSOX, and SDPF-M interactions as well as random phase approximation (RPA) calculations. This observation indicates that the O21 nucleus in its ground state does not manifest any anomalous structure and is not influenced by the proximity of the drip line.

Measurements of the cross sections are conducted for coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the d, gamma deutron to pi0 eta deutron, at the incident energy in the range of the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. A rapidly increasing trend below 1 GeV is observed in the total cross section. The data are effectively reproduced by theoretical calculations incorporating the meson-deutron final-state interactions. However, the measured deutron angular distribution d sigma/d Omegad in the center-of-mass frame (gamma d) is rather flat, and it differs significantly from the strong backward-peaking behavior expected in the kinematics of d formation after pi0 eta photoproduction on an initial bound nucleon. In addition, the d sigma/dMeta d differential cross section exhibits a prominent enhancement near the eta d threshold, while d sigma/dMpi d exhibits an enhancement near the known pi d resonance with I=1 and JP=2+. From these observations, we have concluded that two reaction sequences occur; gamma d to pi0 D01 to pi0 eta d and eta D12 to pi0 eta d, where DIJ denotes a state with a baryon number of 2, an isospin of I, and a spin of J. The enhancement corresponding to D01 is expected to be a theoretically predicted eta NN bound state with I=0 and JP=1- or a virtual state of eta d. It is found that attraction between eta d is certainly very strong.

BL-774 is a control, data acquisition, and online analysis platform for addressing the requirements in future beamline experiments at SPring-8-II. To date, we have achieved implementations related to “robustness and flexibility” and “configuration management”. These implementations were made possible by the two-phase development workflow. The two-phase development is characterized by a dedicated rapid application development environment that beamline scientists can use rapidly and easily in real beamline environments, and web-based graphical user interfaces that BL-774 software developers have incorporated the achievements of the beamline scientists as part of the official release of the beamline control software. BL-774 has been introduced in two beamlines to date, and we plan to implement it in more beamlines while adding more features. We plan to integrate BL-774 seamlessly with other systems that are currently under development in the facility, such as two-dimensional detector systems and SPring-8 data centers. By introducing BL-774 in conjunction with other infrastructure in the facility, more advanced experimental operations, such as feedback operations based on online data analysis or remote operations from outside the beamlines, are to be expected. This paper presents the design and implementation of BL-774 and its introduction into a beamline at SPring-8.

Coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the deuteron, $\gamma{d}${$\to$}$\pi^0\eta{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section demonstrates a rapid rise below 1 GeV. The data are underestimated by the existing theoretical calculations based on quasi-free $\pi^0 \eta$ photoproduction on the nucleon followed by deuteron coalescence. At the same time, the data are rather well reproduced by the calculations taking into account the final-state interaction. We have also measured for the first time the differential cross sections: the $\pi^0 \eta$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\pi \eta}$, the $\pi^0 d$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\pi d}$, the $\eta d$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\eta d}$, and the distribution over the deuteron emission angle $d\sigma/d\Omega_d$ in the overall center-of-mass frame. The measured cross section $d\sigma/d\Omega_d$ does not exhibit strongly backward-peaking behavior predicted by the calculations. At all incident energies, an increase in $d\sigma/dM_{\eta d}$ near the $\eta d$ threshold is observed, which indicates a bound or virtual $\eta d$ state resulting from a strong attraction between $\eta$ and a deuteron. The possibilities of using coherent $\pi^0\eta$ photoproduction on a nucleus to study the $\eta$-nuclear interaction are also discussed., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

In the GAMMA 10/PDX tandem mirror, plasma with strong ion-temperature anisotropy is produced by using the ion cyclotron range of frequency waves. This anisotropy of ion temperature causes several Alfven-Ion-Cyclotron (AIC) waves to spontaneously excite in the frequency range just below the ion cyclotron frequency. In addition, difference-frequency (DF) waves are excited in the radial inner region of the plasma by wave–wave coupling among the AIC waves. The radial density profiles were measured at multi-axial positions using a frequency-modulation reflectometer with an axial array of microwave antennas, and an axial variation of the density was found to be significant. In addition, a relative phase difference of the DF wave between axially separated two points was first obtained by finely choosing the probing frequency of the reflectometers with a maximum coherence used as a measure, indicating that the DF wave is a propagating wave, while the pump AIC waves are standing waves in the axial region of measurement.

A penetration experiment was conducted using a double-pipe model pile capable of measuring the inner friction resistance in isolation. The objective was accurately measuring the bearing capacity of open-ended piles and determining the range of machining that needs to be performed on the toe of the piles in order to plugging. The friction coefficient of the model pile was changed to verify the relationship between the inner friction resistance and the IFR*, and how plugging at the toe is affected by the range and position of the where machining area. From the results, it can be concluded that a superior outcome cannot be achieved solely by increasing the friction coefficient around 0.5D from the end of the pile. To achieve effective plugging, the friction coefficient should be increased not only at the toe of the pile but across an area of at least 1.0D from the toe of the pile.

A transmittance monitor has been developed for the second tagged-photon beamline at the Research Center for Electron Photon Science, Tohoku University, Japan. In this beamline, an internal radiator is employed to produce the bremsstrahlung photon beam out of circulating electrons in a synchrotron. The transmittance, which is defined as the probability of finding a photon coming to the target position when an electron is detected with a photon-tagging counter, should be determined to deduce cross sections for photo-induced reactions. The developed monitor consists of a telescope of thin plastic scintillators with a positron and electron converter, and a dedicated circuit implemented in a field-programmable gate array chip. The transmittance can be measured with this monitor for high-intensity photon beams corresponding to 20 MHz tagging signals. The measured transmittance is found to be constant with respect to the photon intensity for each photon-tagging channel.

Contains fulltext : 235407.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) BACKGROUND: Randomised, controlled trials and meta-analyses have shown the survival benefit of concomitant chemoradiotherapy or hyperfractionated radiotherapy in the treatment of locally advanced head and neck cancer. However, the relative efficacy of these treatments is unknown. We aimed to determine whether one treatment was superior to the other. METHODS: We did a frequentist network meta-analysis based on individual patient data of meta-analyses evaluating the role of chemotherapy (Meta-Analysis of Chemotherapy in Head and Neck Cancer [MACH-NC]) and of altered fractionation radiotherapy (Meta-Analysis of Radiotherapy in Carcinomas of Head and Neck [MARCH]). Randomised, controlled trials that enrolled patients with non-metastatic head and neck squamous cell cancer between Jan 1, 1980, and Dec 31, 2016, were included. We used a two-step random-effects approach, and the log-rank test, stratified by trial to compare treatments, with locoregional therapy as the reference. Overall survival was the primary endpoint. The global Cochran Q statistic was used to assess homogeneity and consistency and P score to rank treatments (higher scores indicate more effective therapies). FINDINGS: 115 randomised, controlled trials, which enrolled patients between Jan 1, 1980, and April 30, 2012, yielded 154 comparisons (28 978 patients with 19 253 deaths and 20 579 progression events). Treatments were grouped into 16 modalities, for which 35 types of direct comparisons were available. Median follow-up based on all trials was 6·6 years (IQR 5·0-9·4). Hyperfractionated radiotherapy with concomitant chemotherapy (HFCRT) was ranked as the best treatment for overall survival (P score 97%; hazard ratio 0·63 [95% CI 0·51-0·77] compared with locoregional therapy). The hazard ratio of HFCRT compared with locoregional therapy with concomitant chemoradiotherapy with platinum-based chemotherapy (CLRT(P)) was 0·82 (95% CI 0·66-1·01) for overall survival. The superiority of HFCRT was robust to sensitivity analyses. Three other modalities of treatment had a better P score, but not a significantly better HR, for overall survival than CLRT(P) (P score 78%): induction chemotherapy with taxane, cisplatin, and fluorouracil followed by locoregional therapy (IC(TaxPF)-LRT; 89%), accelerated radiotherapy with concomitant chemotherapy (82%), and IC(TaxPF) followed by CLRT (80%). INTERPRETATION: The results of this network meta-analysis suggest that further intensifying chemoradiotherapy, using HFCRT or IC(TaxPF)-CLRT, could improve outcomes over chemoradiotherapy for the treatment of locally advanced head and neck cancer. A gyrotron and a matching optics unit (MOU) for the multi-frequency electron cyclotron heating and current drive (ECH/CD) system in JT-60SA have been developed successfully. The gyrotron demonstrated stable operation at high powers of 1.5 MW for 5 s and 1.9 MW for 1 s at 110 GHz. To obtain high HE11 mode purity (>90%) at the outlet of the waveguide in the ECH/CD launcher, a MOU for operating at three frequencies of 82 GHz, 110 GHz, and 138 GHz that includes three pairs of water-cooled phase correcting mirrors has been developed, which allows the mirrors to be changed without opening the evacuated MOU. The mode purity at the inlet of a dummy load in the transmission line was evaluated at high-power and an HE11 mode purity of >90% was obtained at three frequencies.

Carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation (CASTLE) is a rare tumour that mainly arises from the thyroid gland, or occasionally, from the head and neck. Although the 10-year survival rate of patients with CASTLE is approximately 80%, local recurrence and distant metastasis are observed in some cases. A recent systematic review for CASTLE indicated that the prognostic factors are treatment-dependent, and postoperative radiotherapy significantly improves patient survival.Herein, we describe and compare three cases of CASTLE, including a case with distant metastasis despite administering postoperative chemotherapy. Thus, the mechanisms underlying metastasis of CASTLE are unclear. This case study helps to elucidate the histopathological risk factors of metastasis in CASTLE.We found that prominent lymphovascular invasion and higher proliferative activities might be risk factors of metastasis in CASTLE. In addition, we have summarised the cytological, morphological, and immunohistochemical features of CASTLE for an accurate diagnosis.

We measured missing mass spectrum of the ^{12}C(γ,p) reaction for the first time in coincidence with potential decay products from η^{'} bound nuclei. We tagged an (η+p) pair associated with the η^{'}N→ηN process in a nucleus. After applying kinematical selections to reduce backgrounds, no signal events were observed in the bound-state region. An upper limit of the signal cross section in the opening angle cosθ_{lab}^{ηp}

The gyromagnetic factor of the low-lying E=251.96(9) keV isomeric state of the nucleus ^{99}Zr was measured using the time-dependent perturbed angular distribution technique. This level is assigned a spin and parity of J^{π}=7/2^{+}, with a half-life of T_{1/2}=336(5) ns. The isomer was produced and spin aligned via the abrasion-fission of a ^{238}U primary beam at RIKEN RIBF. A magnetic moment |μ|=2.31(14)μ_{N} was deduced showing that this isomer is not single particle in nature. A comparison of the experimental values with interacting boson-fermion model IBFM-1 results shows that this state is strongly mixed with a main νd_{5/2} composition. Furthermore, it was found that monopole single-particle evolution changes significantly with the appearance of collective modes, likely due to type-II shell evolution.

We have developed a charge-to-time converting (QTC) leading-edge discriminator for plastic-scintillator signals, which is packaged in a NIM-standard double-width module. The pulse width of the discriminator output is approximately proportional to the charge integration of input signals up to 40–50 pC. The non-linearity is 20%, 10%, 4%, and 2% at maximum for the input charges below 7 pC, for 7–10 pC, for 10–20 pC, and above 20 pC, respectively, for the minimum input charges larger than 2 pC. The discriminator could be suitable in the measurement of the timing and charge of plastic-scintillator signals together with a multi-hit time-to-digital converter (TDC) module.

Background: Pembrolizumab is active in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), with programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression associated with improved response. Methods: KEYNOTE-048 was a randomised, phase 3 study of participants with untreated locally incurable recurrent or metastatic HNSCC done at 200 sites in 37 countries. Participants were stratified by PD-L1 expression, p16 status, and performance status and randomly allocated (1:1:1) to pembrolizumab alone, pembrolizumab plus a platinum and 5-fluorouracil (pembrolizumab with chemotherapy), or cetuximab plus a platinum and 5-fluorouracil (cetuximab with chemotherapy). Investigators and participants were aware of treatment assignment. Investigators, participants, and representatives of the sponsor were masked to the PD-L1 combined positive score (CPS) results; PD-L1 positivity was not required for study entry. The primary endpoints were overall survival (time from randomisation to death from any cause) and progression-free survival (time from randomisation to radiographically confirmed disease progression or death from any cause, whichever came first) in the intention-to-treat population (all participants randomly allocated to a treatment group). There were 14 primary hypotheses: superiority of pembrolizumab alone and of pembrolizumab with chemotherapy versus cetuximab with chemotherapy for overall survival and progression-free survival in the PD-L1 CPS of 20 or more, CPS of 1 or more, and total populations and non-inferiority (non-inferiority margin: 1·2) of pembrolizumab alone and pembrolizumab with chemotherapy versus cetuximab with chemotherapy for overall survival in the total population. The definitive findings for each hypothesis were obtained when statistical testing was completed for that hypothesis; this occurred at the second interim analysis for 11 hypotheses and at final analysis for three hypotheses. Safety was assessed in the as-treated population (all participants who received at least one dose of allocated treatment). This study is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT02358031. Findings: Between April 20, 2015, and Jan 17, 2017, 882 participants were allocated to receive pembrolizumab alone (n=301), pembrolizumab with chemotherapy (n=281), or cetuximab with chemotherapy (n=300); of these, 754 (85%) had CPS of 1 or more and 381 (43%) had CPS of 20 or more. At the second interim analysis, pembrolizumab alone improved overall survival versus cetuximab with chemotherapy in the CPS of 20 or more population (median 14·9 months vs 10·7 months, hazard ratio [HR] 0·61 [95% CI 0·45–0·83], p=0·0007) and CPS of 1 or more population (12·3 vs 10·3, 0·78 [0·64–0·96], p=0·0086) and was non-inferior in the total population (11·6 vs 10·7, 0·85 [0·71–1·03]). Exotic nuclei are characterized by a number of neutrons (or protons) in excess relative to stable nuclei. Their shell structure, which represents single-particle motion in a nucleus, may vary due to nuclear force and excess neutrons, in a phenomenon called shell evolution. This effect could be counterbalanced by collective modes causing deformations of the nuclear surface. Here, we study the interplay between shell evolution and shape deformation by focusing on the magnetic moment of an isomeric state of the neutron-rich nucleus 75Cu. We measure the magnetic moment using highly spin-controlled rare-isotope beams and achieving large spin alignment via a two-step reaction scheme that incorporates an angular-momentum-selecting nucleon removal. By combining our experiments with numerical simulations of many-fermion correlations, we find that the low-lying states in 75Cu are, to a large extent, of single-particle nature on top of a correlated 74Ni core. We elucidate the crucial role of shell evolution even in the presence of the collective mode, and within the same framework, we consider whether and how the double magicity of the 78Ni nucleus is restored, which is also of keen interest from the perspective of nucleosynthesis in explosive stellar processes., 10 pages, 4 figures

A fast beam-profile monitor has been developed for high-energy photon beamlines at the Research Center for Electron Photon Science, Tohoku University. The position of the photon converted into an electron–positron pair in a 0.5 mm-thick aluminum plate is measured with two hodoscopes made of scintillating fibers with cross-sections of 3 × 3 mm 2 . Events in which charged particles are produced upstream are rejected with a charge veto plastic scintillator placed in front of the plate, and pair-production events are identified with a trigger plastic scintillator placed behind the plate. The position is determined by a developed logic module with a field-programmable gate array. The dead time for processing an event is 35 ns, and a high data acquisition efficiency ( ~ 100 % ) can be achieved with this monitor for high-intensity photon beams corresponding to 20 MHz tagging signals.

Background Large granular lymphocyte (LGL) expansion occasionally occurs after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT), and is thought to be a good prognostic sign that is associated with a lower relapse rate. However, there have been no reports of late graft failure (LGF) due to graft rejection in association with oligoclonal LGL expansion. We herein report a case of LGF associated with the transient expansion of recipient-derived T-LGL after allo-SCT. Case Report A 65-year-old man underwent peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT) from his human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-haploidentical son for the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia, which had evolved from a myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Neutrophil engraftment occurred on day 20. A chimerism analysis on day 29 showed both granulocytes and mononuclear cells in the peripheral blood to be completely of donor origin. However, his neutrophil count gradually decreased and a chimerism analysis on day 61 showed that 84% of the patient's T cells were of recipient origin while the granulocytes were 100% donor-derived. His LGLs rapidly increased to 4.01 × 10 9 /L on day 113 and decreased thereafter. The percentage of donor cells in his granulocytes gradually decreased, and the patient's leukocytes were completely replaced by recipient cells on day 177. Conclusions The clinical course suggests that the expansion of recipient-derived T-LGLs after allo-SCT can be a sign of graft rejection. Early intervention may be needed if the LGL expansion is recipient-derived.

Recently, we developed a new statistical method for revealing the regulatory systems in living cells. Our method is based on Structural Equation Modelling combined with factor analysis. In generally, Structural Equation Modelling is utilized to detect the model adaptability with the measured data, such as large-scale questionnaire data. In this study, we improved our developed iteration algorithm and gene selection procedure to infer the causalities between variables as a regulatory network from limited numerical data. Our improved gene selection method is based on cross correlation to summarize the time preceding information from gene expression profiles, which were systematically measured at 8 time points. Cross correlation is usually utilized as a measure of similarity between two waves by a time-lag application, and we defined the values of lags ranging from −2 to +4. By this improved method, we selected 14 genes as regulatory factors for the specific system in oleaginous yeast. In the inferred model, only 6 genes among the selected 14 genes were considered to affect the volume of oil accumulation in a closed and specific system. Our method will be useful to artificially control cell systems in the bioproduction and biotechnology fields.

SummaryWe investigated the effects of light intensity on various photosynthetic characteristics on a whole-plant (WP) basis, focussing on three developmental stages from leafing (when young leaves unfolded) to flowering in the Oriental hybrid lily ‘Siberia’. On a WP basis, the net photosynthetic rate (Pr) was low at the leafing stage, but increased rapidly at the visible flower bud and flowering stages. However, on a leaf area (LA) basis, plants at the leafing stage exhibited a high Pr, peaking at the visible flower bud stage and diminishing slightly at the flowering stage.The rapid increase in total LA due to plant growth and development had a strong influence on Pr on a WP basis. ‘Siberia’ plants were grown under various reduced levels of natural light (0%, 40%, or 60%), achieved by shading, to evaluate the contribution of photosynthetic assimilates at various developmental stages and to compare the consistency of these results with the photosynthetic characteristics of the plants. Demonstrating the effect that climate change is having on regional weather is a subject which occupies climate scientists, government policy makers and the media. After an extreme weather event occurs, the question is often posed, ‘Was the event caused by anthropogenic climate change?’ Recently, a new branch of climate science (known as attribution) has sought to quantify how much the risk of extreme events occurring has increased or decreased due to climate change. One method of attribution uses very large ensembles of climate models computed via volunteer distributed computing. A recent advancement is the ability to run both a global climate model and a higher resolution regional climate model on a volunteer's home computer. Such a set-up allows the simulation of weather on a scale that is of most use to studies of the attribution of extreme events. This article introduces a global climate model that has been developed to simulate the climatology of all major land regions with reasonable accuracy. This then provides the boundary conditions to a regional climate model (which uses the same formulation but at higher resolution) to ensure that it can produce realistic climate and weather over any region of choice. The development process is documented and a comparison to previous coupled climate models and atmosphere-only climate models is made. The system (known as weather@home) by which the global model is coupled to a regional climate model and run on volunteers' home computers is then detailed. Finally, a validation of the whole system is performed, with a particular emphasis on how accurately the distributions of daily mean temperature and daily mean precipitation are modelled in a particular application over Europe. This builds confidence in the applicability of the weather@home system for event attribution studies.

BK virus-associated hemorrhagic cystitis (BKV-HC) is a common and major cause of morbidity in recipients of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. A 32-year-old woman developed severe BKV-HC on day 24 after cord blood transplantation (CBT). Despite supportive therapies - such as hyperhydration, forced diuresis, and urinary catheterization - macroscopic hematuria and bladder irritation persisted for over a month. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy at 2.1 atmospheres for 90 min per day was started on day 64 after CBT. Macroscopic hematuria resolved within a week, and microscopic hematuria was no longer detectable within 2 weeks. Hematuria did not recur after 11 sessions of HBO therapy, and no significant side effects were observed during or after treatment. HBO therapy could thus be useful in controlling refractory BKV-HC after CBT.

The significance of nonisentropic irreversible mixing processes is diagnosed for idealized simulations of synoptic-scale baroclinic wave life cycles along the subtropical jet stream, using a nonhydrostatic, anelastic, mesoscale model subject to a free-slip surface boundary condition. A variety of morphological features of mixing is identified such as a mesoscale columnar vortex associated with the onset of frontal fracture, episodic overturnings along the surface fronts, “wrinkling” of the tropopause, and injection of tropospheric air into the stratosphere. The evolution of the degree of nonisentropic irreversible mixing is first analyzed by computing the change of the “base” component of potential energy that cannot be converted into kinetic energy. The structure of the mixing activity is also diagnosed through inspection of spatiotemporal changes of entropy to demonstrate that the surface fronts are by far the most active regions of such activity. This activity is found to be primarily longitudinal, extending from the surface to the lower stratosphere, to form a three-dimensional spiral in the synoptic-scale cyclone and along the fronts. However, an exceptional region also exists along the warm front, where the structure becomes primarily transverse in the mature phase of frontal development in a model including an explicit representation of small-scale turbulence. In all simulations, the net transfer of mass and heat across the tropopause is from troposphere to stratosphere. The maximum transfer occurs when the observed climatological level of stratification contrast is assumed between stratosphere and troposphere. The same climatological choice leads to a minimum net irreversible mixing, which occurs primarily at Earth's surface.

Several beam-profile monitors have been developed for high-energy photon beamlines at the Research Center for Electron Photon Science, Tohoku University, Japan. The position of the photon converted into an electron-positron pair in a metal plate is measured in these monitors. In the current monitor, two layers of 16 scintillating-fiber hodoscopes with a cross section of a 3-mm square have been adopted for the position measurement. The effective area is a 48 mm square. Events in which charged particles are produced upstream are rejected with a charge veto plastic scintillator placed in front of the plate, and pair-production events are identified with a trigger plastic scintillator placed behind the plate. The position is determined by a logic circuit with a field-programmable gate array. The dead time for processing an event is several tens of ns, and a high data acquisition efficiency can be achieved with these monitors for high-intensity photon beams (approximately 400 MHz). In the new developing monitor, the scintillating-fiber hodoscopes are planned to be replaced with a multi-anode metal-packaged photomultiplier tube. The secondary emission electrons produced at the photoelectric surface by the electron-positron pair are utilized for the position measurement. In this contribution, the overview of the developed monitor and prospects of the developing monitor will be discussed.

Traditional “magic numbers” were once regarded as immutable throughout the nuclear chart. However, unexpected changes were found for unstable nuclei around N = 20. With both proton and neutron numbers around the magic number of 20, the neutron-rich 39Cl isotope provides a good test case for the study of the quantum-state evolution across the major shell. In the present work, the negative parity states in 39Cl are investigated through the β decay spectroscopy of 39S. Newly observed γ transitions together with a new state are assigned into the level scheme of 39Cl. The spin parity of 5/2− for the lowest negative parity state in 39Cl is reconfirmed using the combined γ transition information. These systematic observations of the negative parity states in 39Cl allow a comprehensive comparison with the theoretical descriptions. The lowest 5/2− state in 39Cl remains exotic in terms of comparisons with existing theoretical calculations and with the neighboring isotopes having similar single-particle configurations. Further experimental and theoretical investigations are suggested.

A number of studies have set out to obtain a range of atmosphere and ocean model behavior by perturbing parameters in a single climate model (perturbed physics ensemble: PPE). Early studies used shallow layer slab ocean or flux-adjusted coupled ocean-atmosphere models to obtain a broad range of behavior as characterized by climate sensitivity. A recent study reports a relatively narrow range of sensitivities (2.2–3.2°C) in a PPE of 35 coupled models without flux adjustment, raising the question whether previous broad ranges were an artifact of the use of models that were not in top-of-atmosphere (TOA) energy balance. Moreover, no PPE experiment has reported a large spread of behavior of the ocean compared to that exhibited in a multi-model ensemble (MME) such as Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 3 (CMIP3). In this work, we randomly perturb model parameters of a coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation model using a space-filling design containing 10,000 combinations. The ensemble is run over the distributed computing platform of climateprediction.net under fixed pre-industrial forcing without flux adjustment. We resample a second, 20,000-member, ensemble with perturbations conditioned on the TOA fluxes from the first ensemble to not drift significantly from a realistic base state while targeting a range of behavior. Models within the targeted ensemble show realistic regional control climates when compared to the CMIP3 ensemble, although there is a bias in global mean surface temperature. The range of predicted equilibrium climate sensitivities of the targeted ensemble is substantially smaller than that obtained with flux adjustment, but larger than the range in the CMIP3 ensemble or in the 35-model un-flux-adjusted PPE in a recent study mentioned above. The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation in the targeted ensemble exhibits a spread in strength as wide as that found in the CMIP3 ensemble. We conclude that flux adjustment is not a pre-requisite for obtaining a broad spread of behavior in a perturbed physics ensemble.

We have developed a parametrization of Jovian moist convection based on a heat engine model of moist convection. In comparison to other moist convection schemes, this framework allows the computation of the total available convective energy TCAPE and the corresponding mass flux M as dynamic variables from the mean atmospheric state. The effects of this parametrization have been investigated both analytically and numerically. In agreement with previous numerical experiments and observations, the inclusion of moist convection leads to heat and water vapor transport from the water condensation level into higher altitudes. The time development of the modeled convective events was found to be strongly influenced by a rapid reduction of kinetic energy and a subsequent lowering of the cumulus tower's top in response to convective heating. We have tested the sensitivity of the scheme to different variations in the fractional cloud coverage and under the inclusion of external radiative forcing towards a stable/unstable temperature profile. While the time development of convective events differs in response to these variations, the general moist convective heating and moistening of the upper troposphere was a robust feature observed in all experiments.
