The catalytic activity of niobium phosphate was evaluated in the benzylation reaction of the anisole with benzyl alcohol, 2-phenyl-ethanol and 1-phenyl-ethanol, in liquid phase. The influence of concentration of the catalysts was evaluated. The niobium phosphate was characterized by DRX, thermogravimetry analysis, BET surface area and IV-pyridine. We found high activities (100%) and selectivity (>90%) in the benzylation with benzyl alcohol and 1-phenyl-ethanol. No result was obtained with 2-phenyl-ethanol. In the reaction with benzyl alcohol a side reaction occurs to form dibenzylether. It has been concluded that Lewis acid sites are responsible for the ether formation and Bronsted acid sites (POH and NbOH) are responsible for the benzylation of anisole with alcohols. The isomer composition in benzylation products from anisole alkylation gave predominantly ortho – para substitution in accordance with a typical eletrophilic aromatic substitution pathway.

The catalytic activity of commercial niobium phosphate was evaluated in the benzylation of aromatic compounds with benzyl alcohol, in liquid phase. The conversion of benzyl alcohol was 100% in the reactions with toluene, ethylbenzene, propylbenzene and p-xylene while the highest selectivity in monobenzyl derived compounds (91%) was achieved with p-xylene. The formation of dibenzyl ether was also observed, indicating the presence of Bronsted acids sites in this type of catalyst.

It has been concluded on the basis of the kinetic study of benzene hydroxylation by the “O2–H2O2–nBu4NVO3–PCA” reagent in acetonitrile at various temperatures that the oxidation is induced by the attack of hydroxyl radical on the benzene molecule. The rate-limiting step of the reaction is the monomolecular decomposition of the complex containing one coordinated PCA molecule as well as one hydrogen peroxide molecule: VV(PCA)(H2O2) → VIV(PCA) + HOO˙ + H+. The V(IV) species thus formed reacts further in a non-limiting stage with the second H2O2 molecule to generate the hydroxyl radical: VIV(PCA) + H2O2 → VV(PCA) + HO˙ + HO−. The effective activation energy is 19 ± 3 kcal mol−1.

5. Development of the first salt-tolerant rice cultivar through indica/indica anther culture

Seventy-nine di-haploid lines were produced in rice through anther culture of the cross of two indica breeding lines (IR5657-33-2×IR4630-22-2-5-1-3). The cross was designed to combine the high-yielding ability of IR5657-33-2 with the salinity tolerance of IR4630-22-2-5-1-3. The anther culture (AC)-derived lines were evaluated in the greenhouse, field, and salinity affected areas. Several lines showed desirable traits such as high yield, salinity tolerance, early maturity, good plant type, and resistance to pests and diseases. IR51500-AC9-7 and IR51500-AC11-1 selected from evaluations were included in the National Cooperative Trials (NCT) for saline-prone areas conducted by the Rice Varietal Improvement Group (RVIG) of the National Seed Industry Council (NSIC) of the Philippines. Trials conducted from the 1990 wet season to 1994 dry season at nine sites revealed that IR51500-AC11-1 performed better than other cultivars grown in saline-prone lands. In 1995, the NSIC named IR51500-AC11-1 as PSBRc50 “Bicol” and recommended it for commercial cultivation in salt-affected rice lands. This is the first F 1 AC-derived line from an indica/indica cross to be released as a cultivar for cultivation in saline-prone areas.

A measurement of the underlying activity in scattering processes with pT scale in the GeV region is performed in proton-proton collisions at √ = 0.9 TeV, using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Charged particle production is studied with reference to the direction of a leading object, either a charged particle or a set of charged particles forming a jet. Predictions of several QCD-inspired models as implemented in PYTHIA are compared, after full detector simulation, to the data. The models generally predict too little production of charged particles with pseudorapidity {pipe}η{pipe} < 2, pT > 0.5 GeV/c, and azimuthal direction transverse to that of the leading object. © 2010 CERN for benefit of the CMS collaboration.
