2. Ethics of Teaching Gender and Communication.

Abstract

It is difficult to think about masculine and feminine behaviors without simultaneously conjuring the sex-trait and sex-role stereotypes that accompany these behaviors. Despite the fact that much has been written identifying other attributes that ought to be equally valued and encouraged in women's and men's communication ("empathy,""cooperation,""sensitivity,""effective listening," and "assertiveness"), a legacy of literature argues that using bi-polar terms to characterize men as "adventurous,""dominant""forceful,""independent,""masculine" and "strong-willed" and women "emotional,""passive,""dependent,""sentimental,""submissive,""feminine," and "nurturing" persists. If Michel Foucault can offer guidance in handling the general question of "standards for gendered behavior," it would seem that the first step would be to alter the power relations by denying the "dividing practices" which divide women from men, and second, when the practices can not be denied (childbirth is an example), denying that the practices are or ought to be reasons for power divisions. Scholars must break down the assumption that females hold the standard for intimate relationships and males the standard for public or professional relationships. Research that supports a rigid sense of male and female behavior, such as some recent research on conversational interruptions, is often deserving of scrutiny. In the classroom, professors must be ever vigilant of absolute gender categories as defined by the textbooks they use. (Contains 79 references.) (TB)

3. Dimensions of Intimacy: The Interrelationships between Gender and Listening.

Abstract

Although psychologists, sociologists, family scientists and communication experts are making important contributions to the study of personal relationships, discussion of the gender differences that often create barriers to intimacy, and how these differences are reflected in the communication process, is notably absent from much of this work. While these differences are alluded to repeatedly, nowhere is the connection directly made between intimacy and the listening behavior of women and men. Integrating the salient aspects of listening (knowledge through self-disclosure, interdependence, trust, reciprocated commitment, and communication) with factors that affect the quality of intimate relationships between men and women can help to fill this absence. Such factors include: gender identity in listening and speaking roles, and expression and interpretation of listening in intimate relationships. Hopefully, such understanding will contribute to the knowledge of the concept of intimacy in the culture and will facilitate razing the barriers to intimate relationships that are a product of cultural expectations. Three listening strategies which are connected to the concept of intimacy are (1) self-concept and listening to others; (2) learning the listening strategies of the other; and (3) serving as listening role models. 4. The Passionless Honeymoon: Bush in the White House.

Abstract

The success of a president's "honeymoon" (the traditional period of good relations between a new president and both Congress and the public) is determined by his rhetoric, not his actions. Central to the rhetoric task facing a new president are differentiating himself and his policies from his predecessor and creating a "vision" that encompasses his goals for his term of office. Judging from an analysis of press coverage of his first 3 months in office, George Bush was relatively successful with the first of these goals, but failed, by most accounts, at the second. Mixed press responses may have resulted in the public's tentative assessment of Bush by the end of his honeymoon period. (Thirty-two notes are included.) (Author/SG)

Abstract

This paper discusses ideologues, both of the far Left and the far Right, and their influences on the American political structure and our "traditional pluralistic politics," which is defined as the concept traditionally held in this country that politics function within a clash of interests, sectional and group, and that political decisions are best understood as compromises between these clashing interests. Our democratic society has difficulty coping with ideologues because they endanger pluralistic politics in three ways: by closing the political process to their opposition, by transferring essentially political conflicts into nonpolitical areas, and by impairing democratic discussion. Further, the overriding reason for the anti-pluralism of ideologues is that they are more attached to their ideology than to the democratic process, an attachment demanded by the intertwining of the epistemology and personality. 42. Blood and ink: A qualitative inquiry of teacher well-being in post-pandemic Oklahoma

Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic public schools were at the center of political debate related to educational content and curricula. Some conservative states moved to place tighter controls on schools in these dimensions with anecdotal evidence suggesting a negative effect on teacher well-being by this policy paradigm. Empirical study of this narrative is largely nonexistent in the literature leaving a need for studies on how controlling policies may interact with teacher well-being. To address this gap in the literature, this study performed 30 semi-structured interviews with public school English and Social Studies teachers in Oklahoma to see how they describe their well-being in a controlling post-pandemic state policy environment. Oklahoma is an ideal setting for this study as its different legislative bodies implemented key curricular controls immediately following the pandemic. Oklahoma is also a state that has struggled with teacher retention, studied achievement, and broader social issues in recent years. The study’s main findings suggest that teachers, regardless of their political persuasion, view state controls over their work as damaging to their well-being. Teachers also described policies designed by people far removed from the daily work of schools more negatively and expressed that such policies may interact more negatively with their well-being. Findings also suggest that leadership characteristics may shield teachers’ well-being from state controlling policies, but that supportive leadership may be insufficient over time in a controlling state policy environment as controls tend to inevitably “trickle down” to the classroom level. These findings may contribute to the literature on the teaching profession by advancing knowledge about how teacher identity and well-being interact with state policies. As such, this work may inform the practice of policymakers and school leaders facing challenges of teacher burnout and shortages.

Abstract

This essay extends Burke's notion of victimage as a symbolic response to socially-created guilt to analyze six years of political debate and action in the U.S. drug war (1986-1991). We use a Burkean/metaphorical framework to explore the characteristics of guilt-based drug rhetoric and its ethical entailments. We argue that scapegoating rhetoric - the rhetoric of vilification in times of 'war' - is 'dialectically appealing' in Burkean terms because it provides for common enemies, invites a community united against these foes, morally justifies public opinion, and offers guilt relief to a large number of people. Scapegoating in the drug war was problematic, however, because it misplaced blame for the drug problem, it circumscribed drug policy debate about alternative solutions, and it contributed to a frustrated and sometimes apathetic citizenry more often the victims of racism, vigilantism, and unfair drug sentencing than the beneficiary of medical attention and drug education. The essay concludes with a discussion of the desirability and limits of guilt as a rhetorical strategy.

This essay uses Kenneth Burke's writings on the negative in language to account for the rhetorical appeal of the Reagans' 'just say no' to drugs rhetoric and its application to other social problems. We argue that the 'just say no' rhetoric's treatment of the social problems of drug use, AIDS, teenage pregnancy, and abortion, shifted the responsibility for these problems from the arenas of politics and medicine to that of morality. Solutions became a matter of self-will and restraint, which, while appealing to the individual by providing a sense of control over and freedom from the social ill, essentially advocated private solutions to public problems, reasserted the authority of the government to define both problems and solutions, and undermined the vitality of the public sphere. Extensions of this 'transformational' rhetoric are discussed in current public policy.

50. One's (Re)Born Every Minute; How Carter Suckered Our Votes in 1976.

It appears obvious that Jimmy Carter's religion became an issue in the 1976 presidential campaign because he chose to emphasize it. Such an emphasis would have seemed reasonable to Carter since a large natural constituency of evangelicals existed, the members of that constituency were becoming involved in politics, their sociocultural situation could have been assumed to prompt them in the direction of bloc voting, and the revitalization of a public interest in religious matters indicated that a religious focus would be acceptable. That Carter's religious emphasis was a conscious political tactic appears likely because of evidence showing that he was aware of the political advantage to be gained by his religion; that a change of emphasis, from minimizing to discussing his religious experiences, occurred in March 1976, shortly after a respected political correspondent published the contention that Carter's success was based on his religious appeal; and that Carter attempted to counterbalance any potential disadvantage that might have accrued from his religious emphasis. An analysis of Carter's statements shows that he established the double standard that it is all right to vote for candidates because of their religion, but unfair to vote against them because of religion. While it may be arguable that Carter's conscious political decision to stress religion was manipulative, it is certain that his cut into the Republican evangelical vote helped him to win the election.
