Objective: Black wool can effectively prevent sheep from DNA damage as well as fungal infection, and can improve reproductive performance. In order to explore the candidate genes related to black wool formation in Qira sheep. Methods: We selected 123 adult healthy ewes with different coat colors in Qira sheep groups (black (B), brown (Y) and grey (G)) and extracted DNA from their venous blood to obtain Illumina Ovine SNP 50K chip data. Subsequently, our PCA, NJ-tree, and Admixture population structure analyses of the 3 wool color Qira sheep populations showed that the 3 middle wool color populations exhibited the same genetic traits. Fst, xp-EHH, iHS, and π were detected for selection signals, and the 5% SNPs loci positively selected from the analyses were annotated based on SheepOar_v4.0. The region of exon 1 of the TYRP1 gene was further screened, amplified and sequenced through the DNA of the Qira sheep and associated with goodness-of-fit using the chi-square test. Results: The results showed that 71 SNPs associated with black wool traits, among which TYRP1, PARD3 and CDH2 genes were strongly associated with black wool production. Three mutations were detected in the exon 1 region of the TYRP1 gene that were significantly associated with coat color variation inQira sheep (2:81,183,168, 2:81,183,281 and 2:81,183,284). Conclusion: In this paper, Qira sheep could not differentiate the genetic structure of this population by wool color, and obtained 71 SNPs related to black wool. Objective: This study investigated the effects of circRNA18_46222157_46248185 (named circRNA18) on goat melanogenesis, which differs significantly in goat skins isolated from white and brown coat-colored skins. Methods: Expression patterns of circRNA18 in goat skin and melanocytes were determined by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and in situ hybridization. The circRNA18 interference vector was designed and synthesized to transfect melanocytes and detect the effect of circRNA18 interference on melanin production. Bioinformatics software was used to predict the targeted adsorption miRNAs of circRNA18, verified by luciferase assay. A miRNA expression vector was constructed and transfected into melanocytes to detect the effect of miRNA on melanin production, and the targeted regulatory genes were detected by luciferase assay. Target gene interference vector was constructed to detect the influence of target gene interference on melanin production. Results: qRT-PCR results unveiled distinct expression patterns of circRNA18 in diverse tissues of male and female goats, while in situ hybridization assays showed that circRNA18 is expressed in the cytoplasm of melanocytes. Functional analysis demonstrated that the downregulation of circRNA18 in melanocytes leads to a significant increase (p<0.01) in melanin production. Bioinformatics analysis identified a potential miR-211 binding site on circRNA18, and luciferase assay confirmed their interaction. Overexpression of miR-211 in melanocytes significantly augmented (p<0.01) melanin production. There were two potential miR-211 binding sites on adenoviral E1A-binding protein (EP300), and the overexpression of miR-211 in melanocytes significantly decreased (p<0.001) EP300 expression, with luciferase assay confirming their interaction. Downregulation of EP300 expression in melanocytes through siRNA-EP300 transfection results in a substantial increase (p<0.05) in melanin production. qRT-PCR results indicated that overexpression of mimics-circRNA18 in melanocytes markedly suppressed (p<0.0001) miR-211 expression, significantly elevated (p<0.01) EP300 expression, and significantly inhibited (p<0.001) melanin production. Conclusion: circRNA18_46222157_46248185 acted as a negative regulator of melanogenesis in goat melanocytes by targeting the miR-211/EP300 pathway, and guiding animal hair color breeding strategies. Hair color is formed through a series of processes such as melanin synthesis and storage in melanosomes, transfer from melanocytes, and reception by hair matrix cells in the hair bulb. Because gray hair is caused by the deterioration of a single or multiple of these processes, understanding the mechanisms responsible for these processes is crucial for developing therapeutic strategies. Recently, a robust approach for preparing hair follicle organoids (HFOs) was reported, in which hair follicle morphogenesis, including hair shaft elongation, was tracked in vitro. Here, we investigated whether HFOs could be used to assess genes involved in hair pigmentation. HFOs generated hair follicles and pigmented shafts during the in vitro culturing process. The knockdown of genes associated with melanosome production (Bcl2 and Mitf) and transport (MyoX , PAR2 , and Rab11b) significantly increased the number of gray hairs in HFOs. Face manipulation can modify a victim's facial attributes (e.g., age or hair color) in an image, which is an important component of deepfakes. Adversarial examples are an emerging approach to combat the threat of visual misinformation to society. To efficiently protect facial images from being forged, designing a universal face anti-manipulation disruptor is essential. However, existing works treat deepfake disruption as an end-to-end process, ignoring the functional difference between feature extraction and image reconstruction. In this work, we propose FOUND, a novel Feature-Output ensemble UNiversal Disruptor against face manipulation networks, which explores a new opinion considering attacking feature-extraction (encoding) modules as the critical task in deepfake disruption. We conduct an effective two-stage disruption process. We first perform ensemble disruption on multi-model encoders, maximizing the Wasserstein distance between features before and after the adversarial attack. Then we develop a Gradient-Ensemble strategy to enhance the disruption effect by simplifying the complex optimization problem of disrupting ensemble end-to-end models. Extensive experiments indicate that one FOUND generated with a few facial images can successfully disrupt multiple face manipulation models on cross-attribute and cross-face images, surpassing state-of-the-art universal disruptors in both success rate and efficiency. Vitamin D is essential for cattle and can be synthesized in the skin under ultraviolet irradiation. This study investigated the effects of narrow-band UV-B irradiation during automatic milking on blood vitamin D concentration and the influence of hair and black skin areas on cutaneous vitamin D synthesis in Holstein Friesian cows. Fifty-one cows were stratified by milk yield, days after calving, and percentage of black skin, then divided into three groups: shaved and irradiated (80 J/m2), unshaved and irradiated (129–305 J/m2), and a control group. A custom UV-B light (peak radiation at 295 nm) was installed in the milking robot. Blood 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels were measured at baseline, and 7, 30, and 60 days post-exposure using an enzyme-linked fluorescent assay. UV-B exposure significantly (p < 0.001) increased 25(OH)D levels in shaved (13.4 ng/mL), unshaved (10 ng/mL), and control groups (5.1 ng/mL). Despite receiving less than half the UV-B dose, the shaved group had superior 25(OH)D synthesis compared to the unshaved group (p < 0.05), highlighting hair's role in reducing UV-B absorption. Cutaneous synthesis correlated with black skin area in shaved cows but not in unshaved cows. UV-B irradiation also increased daily milk production by 2.2 kg (shaved) and 2.9 kg (unshaved) compared to controls (p < 0.001). ABSTRACT Background Objectives Methods Results and Conclusions Henna is a powdered plant material traditionally used for medicinal and cosmetic purposes in Asia and the Mediterranean region. In North America and Europe, however, it is only used to colour the hair and decorate the body. This colouring process is due to the action of the secondary metabolite lawsone, which enables henna to produce orange to red shades of colour. The final colour effect of the henna treatment on the hair depends on many factors, including the amount of lawsone in the product used. Unfortunately, there are also henna products on the market that contain the strong allergen para‐phenylenediamine (PPD). Henna products whose manufacturers do not inform consumers about the addition of PPD are a particular problem.The aim of this study was therefore not only the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of lawsone but also of PPD in selected products offered for sale as henna.Since HPLC assays are one of the most sensitive, rapid and reliable methods for the quality control of herbal raw materials, we developed and validated two independent HPLC methods with UV detection for both analytes.We found that only about 60% of the tested cosmetic products were good quality natural products containing not < 0.5% lawsone (the range was between 0.5% and 1.0%). On the other hand, up to 36% of the henna samples contained PPD (the range was between 1% and 9%), and only three out of five of these products were properly labelled. Unfortunately, most of the henna used by Polish consumers comes from online retailers and can be shipped from different regions of the world. It is difficult to adequately control this market. Para-phenylenediamine (PPD) is a chemical compound commonly, used in the dyeing industry, particularly in hair coloring products. PPD poses potential health risks to humans, cause respiratory problems, asthma, allergic reactions, leading to skin irritation, rashes and potential carcinogenic effects during dealing, using or exposure. The aim of the present study uses a rapid, develop. suitable sensitive analytical method for stability studies to investigates PPD by using two analytical methods: High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with UV detection and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrum to confirm the identification of its component PPD in some dying hair samples that use in Yemen. FTIR analysis was employed to identify characteristic functional groups associated with PPD in the dye matrix, providing qualitative information about its presence. The spectral data illustrated that N-H aromatic stretching various peaks in Black Stone Dye, Brand-1, Brand-2 and Brand-3 samples to different PPD concentrations or the presence of impurities, and additional materials in samples collected. HPLC utilized for qualitative and quantitative analysis of PPD in Black Henna samples, where the result HPLC analysis an appropriate method to achieve optimal separation of PPD from other components in the dye samples. Calibration curves were established using known concentrations of PPD, enabling accurate quantification of PPD in Black Henna samples at concentrations 1.9% for Brand-2, Brand-1 (6.98%), Brand-3 (14.33%) and Black Stone (70.35%) that make the three samples higher than permissible levels in black henna samples. The results demonstrate that the combined use of FTIR and HPLC offers a robust methodology for the detection and quantification of PPD in black henna samples that integrated approach can facilitate better monitoring of PPD levels, contributing to improved consumer safety and environmental protection. In our study, we developed a novel magnetic-solid-phase extraction (mag-SPE) sorbent by using NiFe2O4 nanoparticles (NPs) as a magnetic core, with HKUST-1 serving as the metal-organic framework (MOF) shell. Sorbent was fabricated using the Pechini method and characterized and confirmed through various techniques. Following characterization, the synthesized mag-SPE sorbent was combined with Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (FAAS) to determine and quantify heavy metals (Pb, Cd, and Hg) in various cosmetic product samples available in the Iranian market. We studied the effect of various variables to determine the optimal extraction conditions. The concentration was assessed over a linear range under these optimized conditions: 0.5-1700 µg l-1 for Pb, 1-1500 µg l-1 for Cd, and 1-2000 µg l-1 for Hg. The R2 values were 0.99992, 0.99746, and 0.99547, respectively. The LOD (signal (S) to noise (N) = 3) and LOQ (S/N = 10) for Pb were 0.147 µg l-1 and 0.492 µg l-1, for Cd they were 0.162 µg l-1 and 0.541 µg l-1, and for Hg they were 0.294 µg l-1 and 0.981 µg l-1. Moreover, the relative standard deviation (RSD) for Pb, Cd, and Hg were 1.24%, 1.22%, and 1.15%, respectively. Finally, we used the mag-SPE-FAAS method to measure the levels of Pb, Hg, and Cd in various cosmetic samples, including 8 foreign and 7 domestic brands of lipsticks, eye shadows, and hair colors. In recent years, the increasing availability of personal data has raised concerns regarding privacy and security. One of the critical processes to address these concerns is data anonymization, which aims to protect individual privacy and prevent the release of sensitive information. This research focuses on the importance of face anonymization. Therefore, we introduce GANonymization, a novel face anonymization framework with facial expression-preserving abilities. Our approach is based on a high-level representation of a face, which is synthesized into an anonymized version based on a generative adversarial network (GAN). The effectiveness of the approach was assessed by evaluating its performance in removing identifiable facial attributes to increase the anonymity of the given individual face. Additionally, the performance of preserving facial expressions was evaluated on several affect recognition datasets and outperformed the state-of-the-art methods in most categories. Finally, our approach was analyzed for its ability to remove various facial traits, such as jewelry, hair color, and multiple others. Here, it demonstrated reliable performance in removing these attributes. Our results suggest that GANonymization is a promising approach for anonymizing faces while preserving facial expressions. Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have been widely adopted in several advanced artificial intelligence applications due to their competitive accuracy to the human brain. Nevertheless, the superior accuracy of a DNN is achieved at the expense of intensive computations and storage complexity, requiring custom expandable hardware, i.e., graphics processing units (GPUs). Interestingly, leveraging the synergy of parallelism and edge computing can significantly improve CPU-based hardware platforms. Therefore, this manuscript explores levels of parallelism techniques along with edge computation offloading to develop an innovative hardware platform that improves the efficacy of deep learning computing architectures. Furthermore, the multitask learning (MTL) approach is employed to construct a parallel multi-task classification network. These tasks include face detection and recognition, age estimation, gender recognition, smile detection, and hair color and style classification. Additionally, both pipeline and parallel processing techniques are utilized to expedite complicated computations, boosting the overall performance of the presented deep face analysis architecture. A computation offloading approach, on the other hand, is leveraged to distribute computation-intensive tasks to the server edge, whereas lightweight computations are offloaded to edge devices, i.e., Raspberry Pi 4. To train the proposed deep face analysis network architecture, two custom datasets (HDDB and FRAED) were created for head detection and face-age recognition. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed pipeline-parallel architecture in terms of execution time. It requires 8.2 s to provide detailed face detection and analysis for an individual and 23.59 s for an inference containing 10 individuals. Moreover, a speedup of 62.48% is achieved compared to the sequential-based edge computing architecture. Meanwhile, 25.96% speed performance acceleration is realized when implementing the proposed pipeline-parallel architecture only on the server edge compared to the sever sequential implementation. Considering classification efficiency, the proposed classification modules achieve an accuracy of 88.55% for hair color and style classification and a remarkable prediction outcome of 100% for face recognition and age estimation. To summarize, the proposed approach can assist in reducing the required execution time and memory capacity by processing all facial tasks simultaneously on a single deep neural network rather than building a CNN model for each task. This study investigates the impact of excessive bleaching on the external morphology and internal microstructure of hair, compared to untreated hair. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we observed significant changes in both the surface and internal structures of bleached hair. SEM analysis of normal hair revealed a relatively clean surface with intact cuticle scales, while bleached hair showed brittle, torn scales with a rough appearance. In areas where the cuticle was broken, remnants of endocuticle debris were still attached, contributing to the rough surface. Complete separation of the cuticle layer resulted in numerous longitudinal fissures along the exposed cortical surface of bleached hair. TEM analysis further confirmed distinct differences; in normal hair, the cuticle layer and cortex were well-separated, and a small hole was observed within the endocuticle of the cuticle cells. Conversely, in bleached hair, the cuticle layer was separated from the cortex, with numerous pores formed by the dissolution of melanin granules scattered within the cortex, specifically between the macrofibrils. No melanin granules were detected in the cortex of bleached hair, although the macrofibril structure remained intact. The findings clearly indicate that excessive bleaching leads to the loss of the cuticle layer, exposing the cortex and significantly altering the hair's structural integrity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Production of melanin pigments is a protective mechanism of the skin against ultraviolet (UV)-induced damage and carcinogenesis. However, the molecular basis for melanogenesis is still poorly understood. Herein, we demonstrate a critical interplay between the primary cilium and the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) signaling. Our data show that UV and α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) trigger cilium formation in human melanocytes and melanoma cells. Deficiency of MC1R or the presence of its red hair color (RHC) variations significantly attenuates the UV/α-MSH-induced ciliogenesis. Further investigation reveals that MC1R enters the cilium upon UV/α-MSH stimulation, which is facilitated by the interaction of MC1R with the BBSome and the palmitoylation of MC1R. MC1R interacts with the BBSome through the second and third intercellular loops, which contain the common RHC variant alleles (R151C and R160W). These RHC variants of MC1R exhibit attenuated ciliary localization, and enforced ciliary localization of these variants elevates melanogenesis. Ciliary MC1R triggers a sustained cAMP signaling and selectively stimulates Sox9, which appears to up-regulate melanogenesis-related genes as the transcriptional cofactor for MITF. These findings reveal a previously unrecognized nexus between MC1R and cilia and suggest an important mechanism for RHC variant-related pigmentary defects. These authors show that upon UV exposure MC1R enters primary cilia and interacts with the BBSome, triggering the downstream signalling that stimulates melanogenesis. Micropatterning of biological surfaces performed via assembly of nano-blocks is an efficient design method for functional materials with complex organic–inorganic architecture. Halloysite clay nanotubes with high aspect ratios and empty lumens have attracted widespread interest for aligned biocompatible composite production. Here, we give our vision of advances in interfacial self-assembly techniques for these natural nanotubes. Highly ordered micropatterns of halloysite, such as coffee rings, regular strips, and concentric circles, can be obtained through high-temperature evaporation-induced self-assembly in a confined space and shear-force brush-induced orientation. Assembly of these clay nanotubes on biological surfaces, including the coating of human or animal hair, wool, and cotton, was generalized with the indication of common features. Halloysite-coated microfibers promise new approaches in cotton and hair dyeing, medical hemostasis, and flame-retardant tissue applications. An interfacial halloysite assembly on oil microdroplets (Pickering emulsion) and its core–shell structure (functionalization with quantum dots) was described in comparison with microfiber nanoclay coatings. In addition to being abundantly available in nature, halloysite is also biosafe, which makes its spontaneous surface micropatterning prospective for high-performance materials, and it is a promising technique with potential for an industrial scale-up. IMPACT STATEMENT: This international group of authors unites researchers who pioneered halloysite clay nanotubes for biomaterials, and discloses a new strategy for this nanoclay composite design through interfacial architecture. These results confirm Dr. K. Ariga concept of nanoarchitectonics, and demonstrate promising applications. Assembly of the clay nanotubes on biosurfaces, including the coating of human or animal hair, wool, and cotton, was generalized for the process optimization. Halloysite-coated microfibers promise new approaches in cotton and hair dyeing, and medical hemostasis and flame-retardant tissue applications. Related techniques of interfacial halloysite assembly on oil microdroplets (Pickering emulsion) and its quantum dots core–shell structure for cell imaging are also described. Contrary to many other synthetic nanomaterials, described natural halloysite nanotubes are environmentally safe and abundantly available, thus allowing for scale up of the suggested functional biocomposites. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the general population's knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding hair dye (HD) usage and its adverse effects in the Northern Emirates of the United Arab Emirates. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted over 3 months in the general population of Ras Al Khaimah. Information was collected by administering a pre-validated self-administered questionnaire related to HDs. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression to correlate HD use with various sociodemographic variables. Results with a p-value less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: In total, 333 of the 405 distributed questionnaires completed the study, with a response rate of 82.20%. Most (52.85%) participants used natural HDs, and most (30.59%) admitted that their motivation to use HD was to remove gray hair. Of the total sample, nearly 75% agreed that they had never performed an allergic test before using the HD, and almost 70% believed that providing advice regarding the HD would be beneficial. Sex (p < 0.0001), age (in years) (p= 0.032), and occupation (p= 0.042) were associated with the frequency of HD use, which was statistically significant. Conclusion: In the present study, HD was common among students, employees, and middle-aged students. Approaches such as educational awareness programs with special attention to the safe and effective use of HDs may help individuals select appropriate HDs and avoid preventable adverse effects. Acromelanism is a form of albinism observed in several vertebrate species. In mammals, acromelanism is known to be caused by mutations in the tyrosinase gene (TYR) that induce a temperature‐sensitive behavior of melanin synthesis, resulting in a characteristic hair color gradient. In birds, several phenotypes consistent with acromelanism have been reported, but their genetic basis remains unknown. This study aimed to identify the genetic basis of an acromelanistic phenotype in domesticated canaries known as pearl and test whether it is caused by the same molecular mechanism described for mammals. To do this, we compared the genomes of pearl and non‐pearl canaries and searched for potentially causative genetic mutations. Our results suggest that the pearl phenotype is caused by a mutation in the TYR gene encoding a TYR‐P45H missense substitution. The repairing effect of poly (N-vinylpyrrolidone-co--methacrylic acid) on permed or bleached damaged hair was studied. The combing and tensile strength of permed and bleached hair before and after treatment with the copolymer solution were tested, and the effects of the mass fraction of copolymer solution and immerseing time on the combing and tensile strength for permed or bleached damaged hair were investigated. The repair mechanism of permed or bleached damaged hair was also explored. The results show that when the immersing time is 3 hours, the tensile strength of the permed hair increases with the mass fraction of the copolymer solution within 0%-0.3%, but no obvious change is observed when the mass fraction is over 0.3%. Therefore, the optimal mass fraction of the copolymer solution for repairing the permed hair is 0.3%. Similarly, the optimal mass fraction of the copolymer solution for repairing the bleached hair is 0.5%. Furthermore, the effects of immersing time on the tensile strength of the damaged hair fibers were compared between the permed and bleached hair before and after treatment with the copolymer solution. Coincidentally, the optimal immersion time for permed or bleached damaged hair is both 2 hours. The tensile strength of the permed and bleached hair soaked in 0.3% and 0.5% copolymer solutions for 2 hours increases by 15.55% and 18.12%, respectively, compared to untreated hair. Through infrared spectroscopy analysis, it is found that the amide II band in hair fibers shifted to the blue after repair, with the wave number shift of 11.12 and 11.09 cm-1, which confirm the formation of hydrogen bonds in the hair samples. Additionally, the urea hydrogen bond disruption experiment demonstrates that urea does not disrupt the hydrogen bonds in untreated hair fibers, but prevents the formation of new hydrogen bonds in damaged hair fibers. It further validates that the improvement of the tensile strength of the copolymer treated damaged hair fibers is mainly due to the formation of hydrogen bonds. After treatment with the copolymer, the dry and wet combing friction decrease by 30.73% and 28.55% for the permed hair, and decrease by 28.55% and 24.83% for the bleached hairs, respectively. Melanogenesis, the biological process responsible for melanin synthesis, plays a crucial role in determining skin and hair color, photoprotection, and serving as a biomarker in various diseases. While various factors regulate melanogenesis, the role of fatty acids in this process remains underexplored. This study investigated the anti-melanogenic properties of 10(E)-pentadecenoic acid (10E-PDA) through both in silico and in vitro analyses. SwissSimilarity was utilized to predict the functional properties of 10E-PDA by comparing it with structurally similar lipids known to exhibit anti-melanogenic effects. Subsequent in vitro experiments demonstrated that 10E-PDA significantly reduced melanin production and intracellular tyrosinase activity in α-MSH (melanocyte-stimulating hormone)-stimulated B16F10 melanoma cells without exhibiting significant cytotoxicity at concentrations up to 15 μM. Further mechanistic studies revealed that 10E-PDA inhibited the nuclear translocation of microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF), consistent with the decrease observed in p-MITF protein levels. It also decreased the mRNA levels of tyrosinase-related proteins (TRP-1, TRP-2) and tyrosinase, while reducing the protein levels of TRP-1 and tyrosinase, but not TRP-2. These findings suggest that 10E-PDA exerts its anti-melanogenic effects by modulating the MITF/tyrosinase axis, presenting potential therapeutic implications for skin pigmentation disorders. Activated carbon from green walnut shells was synthesized; characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray analysis (SEM-EDX); and used as an adsorbent for the separation and preconcentration of indigo carmine. The pH, adsorbent mass, sample volume, foreign ion effect, eluent type, and eluent volume were optimized. The preconcentration factor was 20.0 and the enrichment factor was 19.68. The developed SPE method provided a limit of detection of 40.8 µg L−1 and limit of quantification of 136.1 µg L−1. The analyte recoveries were from 92 to 102%. The intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations were 3.2% and 3.8%. The protocol was employed for the separation, preconcentration, and spectrophotometric determination of indigo carmine in water, candies, hair dyes, edible cake decorations, fruit juices, and textiles. This study was planned to determine the use of cosmetics, personal care and cleaning products containing chemicals during pregnancy and the affecting factors. The study is quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional. The sample size was calculated using the G*Power program. 287 puerperant women were reached. Data were obtained with the Introductory Information Form and Cosmetic and Chemical Product Usage Form. In the study, number and percentage values were given and chi-square and regression analysis were performed. In cosmetics and personal care products, shampoo, toothpaste and deodorant/perfume are among the top three most commonly used products, while dishwashing detergent, laundry detergent and bleach are among the cleaning products. The products that are most restricted in use are hair dye and descaling. It has been determined that education level, occupation, income and number of pregnancies are effective in the use of some products. Introduction: The ability to objectively measure chronic stress has important implications for research, prevention, and treatment. Cortisol is currently the most used biological marker in the investigation of stress and can be measured via blood, saliva, and urine; however, these methods have disadvantages. The measurement of cortisol in hair is a more recently developed method that quantifies the cumulative production of cortisol over longer periods of time. Given the potential benefits of hair as a chronic stress biometric, research with this novel method is burgeoning, yet rarely involves transgender ("trans") populations, despite high levels of reported stress among trans people due to experiences of stigma and discrimination. Since hair is a key part of gender presentation, trans people might be less likely than cisgender people to donate hair for research. To explore the feasibility and acceptability of hair collection for use as a stress biometric with trans women, we nested a study into an ongoing clinical trial in São Paulo, Brazil, "Manas por Manas" (Sisters for Sisters). Here, we describe the hair biometric substudy protocol, as well as the feasibility and acceptability of collecting hair in the study cohort. Methods: We randomly selected a subsample (n = 180) from the Manas por Manas cohort (n = 392), all of whom are trans women, age 18 or older. We messaged participants via phone, WhatsApp, or social media for at least three attempted contacts. Study visits included four components: (1) video introduction, including a demonstration of hair sampling; (2) informed consent; (3) a brief survey with the validated Short Stress Overload Scale (translated to Portuguese) and questions on hair care that could moderate stress hormone results; and (4) hair sample collection. Hair samples were collected and stored using validated protocols. Participants were reimbursed for travel costs. Results: Between April and December 2022, we messaged with 143 individuals out of the 180 sampled (79%) and invited them to participate in the study. Of those invited to participate, we scheduled study visits with 102 people (71.3% of those invited to participate), of whom 100 attended their study visits and completed all activities. Two people did not attend their study visits and stopped communication. Of those who were invited to participate and declined a study visit, four individuals declined due to the hair sample collection procedures (2.8% of those invited to participate). Other reasons for declining to participate included having moved (n = 7), lack of time (n = 11), not interested in research participation (n = 8), or unknown/stopped responding to messages (n = 11). Most participants reported that they chemically treated their hair to bleach, color, or straighten it, which could impact laboratory assays. Conclusion: We found hair sampling for stress measurement to be feasible and acceptable to our participants. We successfully completed all study activities for our desired sample size, and most recruited individuals volunteered to participate. Reasons provided for declining study participation reflected general barriers to research participation, with only four people declining due to hair sample collection procedures. As cocaine (COC) is not only incorporated into hair via blood following ingestion but also by external contamination, hair samples are commonly tested for COC metabolites to prove ingestion. However, COC metabolites can also be present as degradation products in typical street COC samples. The present study investigates minor hydroxycocaine (OH-COC) metabolites p - and m -OH-COC together with p - and m -hydroxybenzoylecgonine (OH-BE) in seized COC (n  = 200) and hair samples from routine case work (n  = 2389). Analytical results of hair samples were interpreted using an established decision model for the differentiation between actual use and external contamination using metabolic ratios (metabolite to COC). They were further examined concerning background of request, hair color, body site of sample collection, sex, and metabolic ratios of the main metabolites [benzoylecgonine (BE), norcocaine (NC), and cocaethylene (CE)]. All seized COC samples were positive for p - and m -OH-COC with a maximum percentage of 0.025% and 0.052%, respectively; p - and m -OH-BE were detected in 55% and 56% of samples with a maximum percentage of 0.044% and 0.024%, respectively. Analytical results of 424 hair samples (17.7%) were interpreted as being predominantly from contamination; the majority of these samples were from traffic medicine cases (83.7%). Metabolic ratios of minor OH-COC metabolites were significantly higher in hair samples interpreted as originating from use than in samples interpreted as caused by contamination. Metabolic ratios for OH-COCs were significantly higher in forensic cases compared to abstinence controls and also in black hair compared to blond/gray hair. However, this was not the case for OH-BE metabolic ratios. No statistical difference was observed with regard to the donor's sex. OH-COC metabolic ratios increased significantly with increasing ratios of NC and CE to COC, respectively. The study demonstrates that OH-COC metabolites (including thresholds for their metabolic ratios) must be used for a reliable interpretation of positive COC results in hair samples. Purpose: Early detection of lifestyle factors, skin and hair color, circulating parameters, and metabolic comorbidities is crucial for personalized prevention and treatment of early age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This study aimed to assess the relationships between genetically predicted comprehensive risk factors and early AMD. Methods and results: Publicly available genome-wide association study (GWAS) data were utilized to identify genetic variants significantly associated with each trait. We applied a Bonferroni-corrected significance level of P < 0.0017. P values between 0.0017 and 0.05 were considered suggestive associations. Univariable Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses revealed that elevated serum HDL-C, lower serum TG, and decreased three circulating fatty acids levels were robust indicators of an increased risk of early AMD (all P < 0.0017), with odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of 1.218 (1.140–1.303), 0.784 (0.734–0.837), 0.772 (0.698–0.855), 0.776 (0.706–0.852), and 0.877 (0.798–0.963), respectively. Additionally, the "never eat wheat products", "age started wearing glasses", and "skin color" were significantly associated with the risk of early AMD (both P < 0.0017), with ORs (95% CIs) of 23.853 (2.731–208.323), 1.605 (1.269–2.030) and 1.190 (1.076–1.317), respectively. Multivariable MR analysis confirmed that elevated serum HDL-C (OR = 1.187, 1.064–1.324) increased the risk of early AMD, while higher serum TG (OR = 0.838, 0.738–0.950) was associated with a significantly lower risk. Furthermore, validation results indicated that serum HDL-C 1.201 (1.101–1.310) and TG 0.795 (0.732–0.864) were significantly associated with the risk of early AMD. There were suggestive associations of smoothies, chronotype, and hair color (0.0017 < P < 0.05), but sun/UV protection, smoking, BMI, diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, fresh fruit intake, fish oil/cod liver oil supplement, sleeplessness, serum C-reactive protein level, and iron level were not associated with the risk of early AMD. Conclusions: Our comprehensive MR analysis demonstrated that elevated circulating HDL-C levels increase the risk of early AMD, while TG and fatty acid levels are associated with a decreased risk. There are limited studies in Saudi Arabia that have examined the prevalence and predictors of premature graying of hair (PGH).This study aims to explore the prevalence and predictors of PGH before the age of 30 among the population of Saudi Arabia.This is a cross‐sectional online survey that was conducted between July 2023 and February 2024 in Saudi Arabia. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify risk factors of having gray hair before the age of 30.A total of 1193 participants were involved in this study. A significant portion of respondents reported having gray hair before the age of 30 (55.9%). The younger population (younger than 44 years), smokers, and those who have comorbidities, have anxiety, have depression, have a family history of gray hair before the age of 30 years, have a dry scalp, suffer from vitamin or mineral deficiencies, have hair loss due to immune diseases (such as alopecia), and use minoxidil or rosemary for hair loss were more likely to have gray hair before the age of 30 years (p < 0.05).This study highlighted the high prevalence rate and associated predictors of PGH in Saudi Arabia. Identified predictors include genetic, health, and lifestyle factors. Healthcare professionals and decision makers are advised to promote the awareness of the general public on its risk factors to enhance the prevention of PGH. However, data on self‐reported adverse skin reactions are scarce.To estimate the proportion of lifetime hair dye use and self‐reported adverse skin reactions in the Dutch general population, and to investigate the association between (adverse skin reactions to) hair dye use and contact allergy‐related factors.This cross‐sectional study collected questionnaire‐derived data from the Lifelines cohort. Logistic regression analyses were conducted between (adverse skin reactions to) hair dye use and black henna tattoo use, reactions to henna tattoos, patch testing, hand eczema and an occupation as hairdresser or beautician.The proportion of hair dye use was 63.1% of 70 987 participants, of which 6.8% experienced adverse skin reactions, mostly mild (77.7%). Hair dye users and those with skin reactions were both positively associated (p < 0.05) with female sex, middle‐age, (positive) patch test results and hairdresser or beautician occupations. Hair dye users were more likely to have had henna tattoos, and those with reactions to hair dye were more likely to have had reactions to henna tattoos.Hair dye use is prevalent among the Dutch general population and frequently causes adverse skin reactions, especially in females who had black henna tattoos. Background and Aim: Body temperature is the most useful clinical parameter for evaluating animal health. In clinical practice, rectal temperature is the gold standard for assessing body temperature, but rectal temperature measurement is not convenient and can cause stress in animals. The non-contact infrared thermometer is considered an alternative method for skin temperature measurements in animals. Many biological factors may influence the response of body regions to thermal challenges; thus, the identification of these variables is essential for accurate infrared temperature measurements. This study aimed to estimate the relationship between the physiological factors of cats and their body temperature measured across various body positions, as well as to propose a model for predicting rectal temperature using an infrared thermometer. Materials and Methods: A total of 184 client-owned cats were included in this study. The infrared temperature (°F) was measured using a non-contact infrared thermometer at five body positions: maxillary canine gingival margin (GCT), anal skin (ANS), inguinal canal (ING), ear canal (EC), and palmar pad. The five biological factors (age, body condition score [BCS], gender, hair type, and hair color) were recorded and analyzed to adjust predictive factors for rectal temperature prediction. All statistical analyses were performed using multivariable linear regression. The rectal temperature prediction model was then designed using the forward stepwise selection method. Results: Based on multivariable linear regression analysis of infrared temperature results, the pre-prediction model showed significant correlations with rectal temperature for ANS, GCT, and EC (p = 0.0074, 0.0042, and 0.0118, respectively). Moreover, the combination of infrared temperatures on ANS and ING was the most appropriate parameter for predicting rectal temperature (p = 0.0008). All models were adjusted according to the baseline characteristics of the cats. However, the adjusted R-squared values of the pre-prediction model of the infrared temperature on the ANS, GCT, and EC and the final prediction model by the infrared temperature on the ANS combined with the ING were low (8.7%, 8.9%, 7.3%, and 12.8%, respectively). Conclusion: The prediction model of rectal temperature of cats by infrared temperature from a non-contact infrared thermometer in ANS combined with ING and adjusted by age, BCS, hair type, and hair color may be applicable for use in clinical practice. This study found that the adjusted R-squared values of all models were low; the predictive model will need to be developed and used to test validity and reliability with an external study group for assessing their practical usefulness. Background: This study aimed to evaluate the utility of 24 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci associated with iris color and hair color in phenotypic identification of the Han Chinese population in Fujian Province. The selected SNPs, known for their strong correlation with specific human phenotypic features, provide valuable reference data for developing a molecular phenotypic identification system. Methods: A multiplex genotyping assay system was established with primers for the 24 SNPs linked to iris color and hair color synthesized based on existing literature. In total, 235 unrelated individuals of Han Chinese ethnicity in Fujian Province were included in this study. PowerStats v12 was employed to calculate forensic parameters associated with the 24 SNP loci, including gene frequencies, genotype frequencies, minor allele frequencies, discrimination power (DP), polymorphism information content (PIC), and observed heterozygosity (Ho). Hardy- Weinberg equilibrium tests were conducted for each locus. The SNP genotyping results were uploaded to the HIrisPlex model (https://HIrisPlex.erasmusmc.nl/) to predict iris and hair colors, and the inferred results were compared with manually assessed images. The accuracy of pigment phenotype inference was evaluated by using ROC curves in SPSS 26.0 software. Results: The accuracy rates of inferring brown iris and black hair phenotypes were 99.6% and 99.5%. The area under the curve (AUC) values were 0.923 and 0.980, respectively. Conclusions: The 24 SNP loci demonstrated high accuracy in inferring iris color and hair color; it seems to be a useful tool for forensic phenotypic identification and anthropological or evolutionary applications. This review aims to provide a detailed overview of the botanical, phytochemical, and dermatological properties of Juglans regia (J. regia). The entire tree contains a wealth of chemical compounds, including phenols, tannins, alkaloids, saponins, reducing sugars, and amino acids, which contribute to its significant nutritional and pharmacological value. Extracts and oils from all parts of J. regia have been studied for their effects on various skin conditions, demonstrating antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, UV-protective, and chemoprotective properties. Additionally, these substances have shown potential in promoting wound healing, anti-aging, skin hydration, anti-tyrosinase activity, and hair dyeing. These benefits have been evaluated in various in vitro and in vivo studies. The therapeutic potential of J. regia suggests that its components could be integrated into treatment protocols and skincare routines. However, to optimize effectiveness and safety, future research should focus on in vivo studies in human subjects to determine the ideal concentrations and formulations of J. regia active compounds for specific skin conditions. Paraphenylenediamine (PPD) is a well‐known culprit allergen in the literature and clinical practice. Although this has been described in temporary tattoos, the definite implication of PPD in permanent tattoos has not been described. We report a patient who developed severe allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) requiring skin grafting after receiving a permanent tattoo with ink containing PPD. A 30‐year‐old female with a past history of atopic dermatitis and psoriasis presented with a 2‐week history of cutaneous reaction to a recent tattoo. The patient noticed inflammation and irritation of the tattoo site the day after administration. The patient was previously identified on patch testing to have a PPD allergy after evaluation for dermatitis after hair dye application. Following the tattoo placement, she applied soap and bacitracin cream which she had used several years prior on a similar tattoo. On presentation 2 weeks later, she was found to have a deep ulcerated plaque with an indurated border encompassing the area of the tattoo. She was referred to the emergency department and admitted for treatment, ultimately requiring debridement and skin grafting. The patient obtained the safety data sheets for the tattoo inks which revealed PPD as an ingredient in every color. We believe this is the first confirmed case of PPD being implicated as the causative agent for ACD to a permanent tattoo. Tattoo ink is unregulated, and formulas are proprietary which makes safe practice difficult for patients with sensitivities. Hair disorders, including central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA), traction alopecia (TA), and acquired trichorrhexis nodosa (ATN), commonly occur in individuals with curly textured hair. Curly textured hair in individuals of African descent has unique properties and can present diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. CCCA has been linked to uterine leiomyoma and type 2 diabetes mellitus, as well as fibroproliferation. TA often presents with a fringe sign and can arise from high‐tension hairstyles presumed to be protective. Trichoscopy is useful in establishing a diagnosis; perifollicular halos are more commonly seen than perifollicular erythema or scale in CCCA. In TA, miniaturized follicles, hair casts, and "flambeau sign" can be seen. Hairstyling practices likely contribute to TA and ATN; however, the data are mixed on the role of chemical relaxers and heat styling in CCCA. Unique considerations in the presentation of frontal fibrosing alopecia in curly textured hair have also been published recently. This review provides a comprehensive, up‐to‐date summary of these disorders with an emphasis on their unique properties, as well as considerations in hair care for curly textured hair. Generalized hair loss is a problem associated with the loss of the entire coat and is one of the main causes of veterinary visits to animals. In most cases, it is an acquired condition, although there are also congenital forms of hair loss, caused by abnormal development of hair follicles. This article discusses both types of causes of hair loss in dogs. Congenital hair loss can occur in the first weeks of puppies' life, but it does not progress with age. Although not always, most often congenital hair loss has a genetic basis. Dysplasia with bleaching of hair color and follicular dysplasia of black hair are examples of congenital skin neuroectodermal disorders.
