Abstract: As the world economy continues to evolve, businesses and industries must adopt new practices and processes in order to survive. Quality and cost control, work teams and participatory management, and an infusion of technology are transforming the way people work and do business. Employees are now expected to read, write, and communicate effectively; think creatively, solve problems, and make decisions; and interact with each other and the technologies in the workplace. Vocational-technical programs must also adopt these practices in order to provide graduates who can enter and advance in the changing work world. The curriculum framework in this document reflects these changes in the workplace and a number of other factors that impact local vocational-technical programs. The curriculum required for educating prospective funeral service professionals is a structured series of course experiences. This program is accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education (3432 Ashland Avenue, Suite U, St. Joseph, MO 64506; 816.233.3747). The goal of the program is to provide training that prepares students for entry-level positions after graduation and licensure. The curriculum is designed to provide students the following: (1) Ethical and professional knowledge in funeral service education; (2) Exposure to career options available within the funeral service field; and (3) Experiences in the application of ethical and professional skills while emphasizing aspects of public health. The Funeral Service Technology program is a 2-year program leading to an Associate of Applied Science degree. The industry standards are taken from the American Board of Funeral Service Education Accreditation Manual. Appended are: (1) American Board of Funeral Service Education Standards; (2) Related Academic Standards; and (3) 21st Century Skills. A list of suggested references is provided for each unit. 6. E-Learning in Scottish Further and Higher Education

Abstract: This paper describes the process and outcomes by which an e-learning strategy was developed for the Scottish further and higher education sectors. It summarises the context in which the Scottish Funding Councils have supported developments in Information and Communication Technology and e-learning and identifies the main external drivers which shaped policy development. The paper presents the main conclusions of the e-learning strategy and indicates the actions which the councils are now taking. The paper provides a useful case study of the process of strategy development at the national level and identifies key concepts which we in Scotland believe are essential components for the effective deployment of e-learning in colleges and universities.

8. Cabinetmaking. Performance Objectives. Basic Course.

Abstract: Several intermediate performance objectives and corresponding criterion measures are listed for each of 15 terminal objectives for a high school basic cabinetmaking course. The materials were developed for a two-semester (2 hours daily) course designed to develop and implement a well-grounded knowledge of the fundamentals of all phases of planning and operating a commercial cabinet or mill workshop. The students receive instruction, information, and practical experience in safety, mathematics, shop drawings, tools, and equipment and shop procedures. It is noted that students participating should be physically fit and have a basic knowledge of basic mathematics and reading in order to complete the course successfully. Titles of the 15 terminal objectives sections are Orientation, Related Occupations, Safety, Student Organizations, Measuring Devices and Measuring, Working Drawings, Types and Grades of Woods, Types of Fasteners, Building Hardware, General Supplies, Hand Tools, Power Tools, Wood Joints, Finishing, and Cabinet Project. (This manual and 54 others were developed for various secondary level vocational courses using the System Approach for Education (SAFE) guidelines.) (HD)
