8. HERA-B results on heavy flavour production in 920 GeV proton–nucleus interactions

Abstract

In this report, recent results from the HERA-B experiment on heavy flavour production in proton?nucleus interactions using a 920 GeV proton beam are presented. The topics include the production of the charmonium states J/?, ?' and ?c, of the D-meson states D0, D?, D*, the open beauty production cross section ( production) and the production cross section. The nuclear dependence for the differential cross sections of charmonium production is discussed. The results are mainly preliminary. The report closes with a summary of the HERA-B search for pentaquark states with strangeness, which yielded quite stringent upper limits for the production of such states in hadronic environments.

9. Charmed and strange particle production at mid-rapidity with the HERA-Bdetector

Abstract

HERA-B is a fixed target experiment at the 920 GeV HERA proton beam at DESY which uses a variety of nuclear targets. During the last data-taking period 200 million minimum bias triggered events were recorded along with a similar number of dilepton triggered events. From the minimum bias data clean samples of D0 → K−π+ + c.c., D+ → K−π+π+ + c.c. and D*+ → D0π+ → K−π+π+ + c.c. have been obtained. About 530k K*0 → K+π− + c.c. and 50k → K+K− decays have also been reconstructed. These samples allow measurements of D0 and D+ production cross sections and their ratio R(D+/D0). In addition, detailed studies of the production mechanisms of strange resonances production at mid-rapidity were measured.

10. Search for +and 3/2pentaquarks in HERA-B

Abstract

A search for Theta^+(1540) and Xi^{--}_{3/2}(1862) pentaquark candidates has been performed in proton-induced reactions on C, Ti and W targets at sqrt(s) = 41.6 GeV studying the pK_s resp. Xi^-pi^- and Xi^-pi^+ (and charge conjugated) decay channels at mid-rapidity. With sensitivities of (Br)x(dsigma/dx_F) < 5 to 25 microbarn/nucleon, we find no evidence for narrow pentaquark peaks in any of the studied final states. Preliminary values for the upper limit of relative yield ratios at mid-rapidity are (Theta^+(1540)) / (Lambda(1520)) < 0.02, (Br)x(Xi^{--}_{3/2}(1862)) / (Xi(1530)^0) < 0.077, and (Br)x(Xi_bar^{++}_{3/2}(1862)) / (Xi_bar(1530)^0) < 0.058 at 95% CL.

11. Improved measurement of the b¯b production cross section in 920 GeV fixed-target proton-nucleus collisions

Abstract

A new measurement of the b ¯ b production cross section in 920 GeV proton-nucleus collisions is presented by the HERA-B Collaboration. The b ¯ b production is tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into J / ψ mesons by exploiting the longitudinal separation of J / ψ → l + l − decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction point. Both e + e − and μ + μ − channels are reconstructed for a total of 83 ± 12 inclusive b → J / ψ X events found. The combined analysis yields a b ¯ b to prompt J / ψ cross section ratio of Δ σ ( b ¯ b ) Δ σ J / ψ = 0.032 ± 0.005 stat ± 0.004 sys measured in the x F acceptance ( − 0.35 < x F < 0.15 ), extrapolated to σ ( b ¯ b ) = 14.9 ± 2.2 stat ± 2.4 sys nb/nucleon in the total phase space.

Abstract

Measurements of the dependence of the J/Psi production cross section on its kinematic variables as well as on the target atomic numbers for 920 GeV/c protons incident on different targets have been made with the Hera-B detector. The large collected di-lepton sample allows to study the production ratio of Psi(2S) to J/Psi and of Chic to J/Psi . Abstract

Inclusive differential cross sections $d\sigma_{pA}/dx_F$ and $d\sigma_{pA}/dp_t^2$ for the production of \kzeros, \lambdazero, and \antilambda particles are measured at HERA in proton-induced reactions on C, Al, Ti, and W targets. The incident beam energy is 920 GeV, corresponding to $\sqrt {s} = 41.6$ GeV in the proton-nucleon system. The ratios of differential cross sections \rklpa and \rllpa are measured to be $6.2\pm 0.5$ and $0.66\pm 0.07$, respectively, for \xf $\approx-0.06$. No significant dependence upon the target material is observed. Within errors, the slopes of the transverse momentum distributions $d\sigma_{pA}/dp_t^2$ also show no significant dependence upon the target material. The dependence of the extrapolated total cross sections $\sigma_{pA}$ on the atomic mass $A$ of the target material is discussed, and the deduced cross sections per nucleon $\sigma_{pN}$ are compared with results obtained at other energies.

30. Production of the charmonium states χc1 and χc2 in proton nucleus interactions at √s = 41.6 GeV

Abstract

A measurement of the ratio R χ c = ( χ c → J / ψ + γ ) / J / ψ in p C , p Ti , and p W interactions at 920 GeV / c ( √ s = 41.6 GeV ) in the Feynman-x range − 0.35 < x J / ψ F < 0.15 is presented. Both μ + μ − and e + e − J / ψ decay channels are observed with an overall statistics of about 15 000 χ c events, which is by far the largest available sample in pA collisions. The result is R χ c = 0.188 ± 0.013 st + 0.024 − 0.022 sys averaged over the different materials, when no J / ψ and χ c polarizations are considered. The χ c 1 to χ c 2 production ratio R 12 = R χ c 1 / R χ c 2 is measured to be 1.02 ± 0.40 , leading to a cross section ratio σ ( χ c 1 ) σ ( χ c 2 ) = 0.57 ± 0.23 . The dependence of R χ c on the Feynman-x of the J / ψ , x J / ψ F , and its transverse momentum, p J / ψ T , is studied, as well as its dependence on the atomic number, A, of the target. For the first time, an extensive study of possible biases on R χ c and R 12 due to the dependence of acceptance on the polarization states of J / ψ and χ c is performed. By varying the polarization parameter, λ obs , of all produced J / ψ 's by two sigma around the value measured by HERA-B, and considering the maximum variation due to the possible χ c 1 and χ c 2 polarizations, it is shown that R χ c could change by a factor between 1.02 and 1.21 and R 12 by a factor between 0.89 and 1.16.

31. Limits for the Central Production of Θ+ and Ξ−−Pentaquarks in 920-GeV pA Collisions

Abstract

We have searched for Θ + (1540) and Ξ −− (1862) pentaquark candidates in proton-induced reactions on C, Ti, and W targets at midrapidity and √ s = 41.6 G e V . In 2 × 10 8 inelastic events we find no evidence for narrow ( σ ≈ 5 M e V ) signals in the Θ + → p K 0 S and Ξ −− → Ξ − π − channels; our 95% C.L. upper limits (UL) for the inclusive production cross section times branching fraction B d σ / d y | y ≈ 0 are ( 4 - 16 ) μ b / N for a Θ + mass between 1521 and 1555 MeV, and 2.5 μ b / N for the Ξ −− . The UL of the yield ratio of Θ + / Λ ( 1520 ) < ( 3 - 12 ) % is significantly lower than model predictions. Our UL of B Ξ −− / Ξ ( 1530 ) 0 < 4 % is at variance with the results that have provided the first evidence for the Ξ −− .
