Healing gardens are green spaces designed to promote and improve health and well-being for people suffering from illness. This paper proposes a methodology for defining a master plan for healing gardens. The methodology is based on site analysis (identification, limitations and potentials of the area) and the evaluation of user needs (patients, staff, relatives). The aim of the master plan is to provide guidelines for the definition of the executive plan, and to set up a sufficiently flexible project suitable for future new categories of patients, according to the different needs of the regional health authorities. The methodology has been applied to a case study: this paper considers the design of the healing garden of a building named Villa Bianca, part of the wider complex of the clinic for mental disorders Villa di Salute located in Trofarello (in the province of Turin, Piedmont, Italy). The main kinds of disturbances treated at Villa di Salute are schizophrenia and personality disorders; there are also some patients with severe depression. Objective: The objective of this study is to trace short-term changes in mood and heart function in elderly individuals in response to exposure to different landscaped spaces. Background: Nineteen elderly but cognitively intact residents of an assisted living facility participated in the study. They were exposed to three landscaped spaces: a Japanese style garden, an herb garden, and a simple landscaped area planted with a single tree. Methods: To assess the effect of different landscaped spaces on older adults, individuals were monitored for mood and cardiac function in response to short exposures to spaces. Mood state was assessed using Profile of Mood States (POMS) before and after viewing the spaces. Cardiac output was assessed using a portable electrocardiograph monitor before and during the viewing. Results: We found that the structured gardens evoked greater responses in all outcome measures. Scores on the POMS improved after observation of the two organized gardens compared to responses to the simple landscaped space with a single tree. During the observation period, heart rate was significantly lower in the Japanese garden than in the other environments, and sympathetic function was significantly lower as well. Conclusions: We conclude that exposure to organized gardens can affect both the mood and cardiac physiology of elderly individuals. Our data further suggest that these effects can differ depending on the types of landscape to which an individual is exposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lavandula officinalis Chaix. is a multidisciplinary medicinal and aromatic plant with special importance in pharmaceutical and fragrance industries as well as in herb garden design. The essential oil content in the inflorescences and leaves of lavender cultivated in Northwest Iran was found to be 6.25% and 0.64% based on dry weight, respectively. The oil was analysed by GC / MS. Thirty seven and thirty four components were identified, comprising 97.0% and 96.5% of inflorescence and leaf total oil, respectively. Oxygenated monoterpenes (86.4% versus 84.2%) were the predominant class of components in both organs studied. Linalool (33.7%), 1,8-cineole (17.1%), borneol (14.7%) and camphor (7.8%) were the highlighted constituents of inflorescence volatile oil. At the same time, 1,8-cineole (31.9%), borneol (24.0%) and camphor (16.1%) showed the greatest content in leaf essential oil. Cis- and trans-linalool oxide (3.5% and 3.3%) and terpinene-4-ol (3.5%) were other components with notable amounts in the inflorescence oil. Meanwhile, cryptone (3.5%) was another appreciable compound in leaf essential oil. A comparative overview of the essential oil profile of Lavandula officinalis Chaix. plants from Northwest Iran revealed prominent quantitative and qualitative differences from previous reports from other parts of the world. In conclusion, the chemical and percentage composition of the analysed oils from Northwest Iran were characterized by the high content of linalool, 1,8-cineole and borneol, potentiating their use in related industries and lavender as an ornamental and aromatic herb. The Australian Alps, which are of high conservation value, are popular summer bushwalking destinations. Experimental trampling trials using a standardized methodology were conducted to determine the resistance and resilience of the two common vegetation types: tall alpine herbfield and subalpine grasslands. Vegetation parameters were measured in lanes subject to control (no trampling), 30, 100, 200, 500 and 700 passes at five sites prior to trampling, immediately post trampling, 2weeks, 6weeks and 1year post trampling. Vegetation height, cover of graminoids and herbs, as well as net species richness all declined with trampling, while litter cover increased. Thresholds for damage varied between the two communities and among the different vegetation parameters. The resistance indices for the two communities (number of passes resulting in 50% reduction in vegetation cover), however, were similar at around 440–450 passes indicating that these two communities are among the most resistant of the 19 alpine–subalpine communities that have been tested around the world, but only of moderate resistance compared to non-alpine communities. The two communities showed limited recovery with damage still evident 1year post trampling. This indicates that they have only moderate tolerance to damage due to moderate resistance, but low resilience. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A personal narrative is presented which explores the author's experience of going to Italy and discovering herb gardens of various shapes and sizes growing in myriad places such as backyards, farm and historic sites.

The article focuses on Herb Garden at Cornell Plantations, Ithaca, New York tended by Diane Miske and Pam Shade.The garden started as a lifelong dream of Audrey Harkness O'Connor who grew up in rural upstate New York. Her interest in herbs was fostered by one of her botany professor whose wife was a writer of herbal cookbooks. Her original vision remains alive in said garden as visitors to her garden are stunned by the extensive collections of plants and pulled in by its ambience and fragrance.
