The Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI) had an almost impossible task of trying to maintain its evolving science coupled with the responsibility of saving society. The organization's difficulties lay in the fact that it was founded in 1936, a time when the founding members' passions clashed with the controversies associated with public service. Despite the odds, however, the first generation of SPSSI were able to elevate the authority of social psychology and their own professional status by legitimizing the language of science.
