In this introduction to the Special Section 'Laboratory Times', the editors argue that a focused body of scholarship at the intersection of time and the laboratory has yet to materialize. To contextualize the papers that comprise the Special Section, we survey the role of the lab within time studies, as well as the place of temporality within Science and Technology Studies (STS). We show how time is made to structure and shape scientific practice and how scientists work with and create time to suit the frames and needs of experimentation. While one might expect to find as many forms of scientific time as there are branches of science, the specific temporalities of bench science have been largely overlooked by scholars. We introduce the arguments of the papers in this Special Section - observing their shared interest in the ways that time is materialized, negotiated and produced in laboratory settings. We conclude by imagining a future in which a research trajectory focused on 'Laboratory TImes' brings scholars in time studies and STS further into conversation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores how scientists make and feel time in the context of the chronobiological laboratory. Like other scholars who have tracked the temporal regimes of scientific knowledge making, I am interested in the kinds of times produced in and around experiments performed by the scientists who study circadian rhythms. During gruelling 'time point' experiments, chronobiologists attempt to mould their own rhythmic, biological bodies to a scientific temporality that emphasises exactness and regularity to facilitate almost continuous data collection. Within this complex 'timescape', scientists tinker with time itself in order to navigate the multiple temporalities produced by their research. They deploy a scientific time convention known as 'Z-Time' or 'zeitgeber time' as a method of 'time work' that allows them to customise the temporal experience of their working lives and their experimental subjects, lab mice. I argue that a case study of the chronobiology lab questions the extent to which time can be 'worked' in the context of biological research. I explore what the tension between scientific and embodied times can tell us about the role of temporality in making 'good science' and the 'emotional culture' that time point experiments foster among chronobiologists. This article explores an interesting episode in the history of time, health, and modernity: Britain's 1908 and 1909 Daylight Saving Time (DST) Bills. While the original DST scheme was unsuccessful, the discussions surrounding its implementation reveal tensions central to early twentieth century modernity, namely between industrial time and 'natural' bodily rhythms. This article argues that DST was essentially a public health measure aimed at improving the conditions of indoor workers like shop girls and clerks through government regulation of the private time of the labouring classes. Drawing on the extensive evidence provided to two House of Commons Special Committees, this article reveals how DST debates drew together contemporary discussions around sunlight therapy, night work, and the importance of regular sleeping and eating to tackle Britain's endemic urban diseases like consumption and anaemia. I suggest that the idea of bodily rhythms was increasingly important in medical thinking in this period and that the study of rhythmicity points to the potential for incorporating temporality as an analytical category in medical history. In 1874, Indian polymath physician Bhau Daji (1822-1874) passed away suddenly - and the details of his secretive 'cure' for leprosy died with him. Drawing on a collection of clinical photographs and illustrations at the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) Museum, this paper will unravel Daji's place in the College's empire-wide enquiry into leprosy in the mid-nineteenth century. We will argue, drawing on Elizabeth Edward's (2014) work, that these images represent 'photographic uncertainties' - both conforming to and undermining traditional conventions of colonial photography, while at the same time highlighting Daji's place as an ambiguous figure in colonial medical hierarchies. We treat the images as 'visual arguments' (Fox and Lawrence, 1998) testifying to the effectiveness of Daji's secret remedy and the contagious nature of the disease. Despite the supposed objectivity of the photographic form, Daji's treatment was never seriously investigated by the Leprosy Committee of the Royal College of Physicians.Transported from Bombay to London, we will consider the differential value placed on Daji's medical expertise as captured by the patient images. In the spirit of the current movement to 'decolonise collections', we reflect on how this case study demonstrates the need for specialist medical museums to interrogate their own colonial pasts.
