Donato García was the mineralogy professor at the Royal Cabinet of Natural History and Central University of Madrid from 1816 to 1853. In addition to teaching mineralogy, he gathered geological and mineralogical material for didactic purposes, and for exhibitions in the hall of the Cabinet. He was a key figure in developing the subject matter of mineralogy in Spain during the first half of the nineteenth century. Donato Garcia likewise promoted the careers of very important future teachers at the Military Academy of Engineers, Natural Sciences Museums, and Universities, integrating oral lectures, mineral testing, visual recognition, and the use of crystallographic models. This paper investigates how the crystallographic system proposed by Haüy (in the mid-thirties) was assimilated through unpublished documents of Donato García’s mineralogical lessons from 1824 to 1825, obtained from Spain’s Archivo General de Palacio (Madrid). Hence, this manuscript can be considered the first scientific work reliably attributable to Donato and based on the notes of his pupil José Musso y Valiente, which stands as an early attempt to create a handbook of mineralogy in Spanish. The novel approach to teaching mineralogy is furthermore compared with lessons published by disciple Antonio María Cisneros y Lanuza in 1843. International audience; This paper presents two unpublished manuscripts of René-Just Haüy (1743-1822). They display the change of status of experimental physics at the end of 18th century France. A youthful manuscript describes a conjurer trick based on magnetism with the pleasure of a mysterious experiment. The manuscript of his first lesson on magnetism at the Ecole normale (1795), when a recognised scientist, blames any appeal to "magical art" in physics and lays down the distinction between a physicist and a charlatan, as a conjurer. From then on physics teaching has to dismiss spectacle and to resort to mathematics.; Cet article présente deux manuscrits inédits du physicien René-Just Haüy (1743-1822) qui témoignent du changement de statut de la physique expérimentale en France à la fin du XVIIIe siècle. Un manuscrit de jeunesse décrit un tour d'escamoteur fondé sur les propriétés des aimants avec le plaisir d'une expérience mystificatrice. Le manuscrit de sa première leçon sur le magnétisme à l'Ecole normale de l'an III (1795), alors qu'il est devenu un savant reconnu, critique en revanche tout recours à un "art magique" en physique et établit la distinction entre le physicien et le charlatan, au sens d'escamoteur. Le refus du spectaculaire et l'appel aux mathématiques sont désormais constitutifs de la physique qui s'enseigne.

Jean-Marc Drouin, A space «as vast as it is fertile». The natural sciences in Cuvier's report. For Cuvier, between « mathematical sciences » and « moral sciences » lies a space « as vast as it is fertile, that of « natural sciences ». These include chemistry, the study of heat, light and electricity, and also natural history. The broad sweep of the latter covers metereology, hydrology, mineralogy, geology, anatomy, physiology and likewise botany and zoology. In this wide field, Cuvier often emphasises the importance of the cristallographie work of Haiiy and highlights two major revolutions. The first, in experimental science, is the new chemistry attached to the name of Lavoisier. The other, in the empirical sciences, is the natural method of classification systematized by Jussieu in botany and which Cuvier himself, among others, champions in zoology. Technical and medical innovations are not forgotten, but they are considered applications of scientific progress. In his eulogies of scientists and didactic explanations of discoveries, Cuvier makes a point of recognizing contributions from abroad. He manages, however, to reconcile his chauvinistic concerns with universalism by pointing out that imperial France is renowned for her impartiality., Pour Cuvier, entre les « sciences mathématiques » et les « sciences morales », s'étend un espace « aussi vaste que fertile » celui des « sciences naturelles ». International audience; Haüy 's role as the "great legislator of mineralogy" — to use Cuvier's judgment — has led to forget his involvement in the field of electricity.It is true that the phenomenon of electricity by pressure that he discovered lost its redevance for physicists of the end of the century. I shall study the change in Haüy 's attitude regarding electricity, in order to bring out the strength, as well as the ambiguity, of the general evolution which took place in French physics at the end of the 18th century, an evolution in which he played a major part.In the 1770s our clergyman conducts himself like all amateurs of electricity, by staging public demonstrations of its spectacular properties. When he endeavoursto found cristallography on geometry, he does not forget amateurs of minerais, offering them a simplified classification of cristals according to their electric properties to be established with the help of qualitative electric instruments . But when Coulomb makes known his fundamental law of electricity, based on a highlytechnical and sensitive experiment, Haüy is converted to this new science of electricity.Although he is neither a mathematician nor a practitioner of this type of experiment — here lies the ambiguity — he becomes a fervent defender of this completely new brand of electricity, which excludes amateurs from the field of science. Once recognized as a member of the Parisian community of physicists and mathematicians, Haüy fully adopts the approach set forth by his colleagues of the Académie, Lavoisier, Laplace, and Coulomb ; and he quits for good the realm of amateurs of cristals and sparks.; Le rôle de Haüy comme "grand législateur de la minéralogie", pour reprendre le jugement de Cuvier, a laissé dans l'ombre son activité dans le domaine de l'électricité. Il est vrai que le phénomène découvert par Haüy — l'électricité de pression — a perdu son intérêt pour les physiciens à la fin du XIXe siècle. C'est l'analyse de l'évolution des attitudes de Haüy envers l'électricité qui présente pour nous de l'intérêt en ce qu'elle permet de mieux comprendre la puissance, et l'ambiguïté, du mouvement collectif qui bouleverse la physique française de la fin du xviiie siècle, mouvement dont il fut un acteur majeur .Dans les années 1770, ce religieux se comporte comme tous les amateurs d'électricité en démontrant publiquement ses propriétés spectaculaires . Lorsqu'il seconsacre à fonder la cristallographie sur la géométrie, il n'oublie pas les amateurs de minéraux ; il leur propose une classification simplifiée des cristaux suivant leurs propriétés électriques, propriétés à établir avec des instruments électriques qualitatifs. Mais lorsque Coulomb fait connaître sa loi fondamentale de l'électricité, appuyée sur une expérience hautement technique et de grande sensibilité, Haüy se convertit à cette nouvelle science de l'électricité. Bien que non mathématicien et étranger à ce type d'expérience — c'est là que réside l'ambiguïté — Haüy se fait l'ardent diffuseur de cette électricité radicalement nouvelle qui rejette les amateurs hors du champ de la science. Devenu membre reconnu de la communauté physico-mathématique parisienne, Haüy s'est parfaitement intégré dans la démarche mise en avant par ses confrères de l'Académie, Lavoisier, Laplace ou Coulomb, et a définitivement quitté le royaume des amateurs de cristaux ou d'étincelles.
