In the literature on electron-phonon scatterings very often a phenomenological expression for the transition matrix element is used which was derived in the textbooks of Ashcroft/Mermin and of Czycholl. There are various steps in the derivation of this expression. In the textbooks in part different arguments have been used in these steps, but the final result is the same. In the present paper again slightly different arguments are used which motivate the procedure in a more intuitive way. Furthermore, we generalize the phenomenological expression to describe the dependence of the matrix elements on the spin state of the initial and final electron state.

5. A MC simulation of showers induced by microscopic black holes

Large surface detectors might be sensitive not only with respect to extensive air showers induced by ultra high energy neutrinos but also to showers induced by hypothetical objects like microscopic black-holes. Microscopic black-holes might be produced in high energy particle collisions with the center of mass energies above the fundamental scale of gravity. These black-holes would decay rapidly by Hawking radiation into characteristic high multiplicity states of Standard Model particles and induce extensive air showers potentially detectable by a large surface neutrino detector. In this paper we study the possibility to detect microscopic black-holes exemplifying it in case of the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The expected event rate is calculated for up-going and down-going showers induced by microscopic black-holes. Our calculations show a significant deviation of the expected rate compared to the rate expected by Standard Model predictions. The rates of up-going neutrinos are almost completely suppressed, whereas the rate of down-going neutrinos increase by a factor of about 50 with respect to standard model calculations. The non observation of up-going neutrinos by the Pierre Auger Observatory in conjunction with a high rate of down-going neutrino-induced showers, would be a strong indication of physics beyond the Standard Model., Comment: Conference Proceedings of ICRC 2009

- Abstract
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN will undergo major upgrades to increase the instantaneous luminosity up to 5-7.5×1034 cm-2s-1. This High Luminosity upgrade of the LHC (HL-LHC) will deliver a total of 3000-4000 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13-14 TeV. To cope with these challenging environmental conditions, the strip tracker of the CMS experiment will be upgraded using modules with two closely-spaced silicon sensors to provide information to include tracking in the Level-1 trigger selection. This paper describes the performance, in a test beam experiment, of the first prototype module based on the final version of the CMS Binary Chip front-end ASIC before and after the module was irradiated with neutrons. Results demonstrate that the prototype module satisfies the requirements, providing efficient tracking information, after being irradiated with a total fluence comparable to the one expected through the lifetime of the experiment.

- Abstract
Background: In Europe, influenza vaccination coverage in the pediatric population is low. This study describes the influenza incidence and associated healthcare utilization in the pediatric population in Italy. Methods: Deidentified data from electronic medical records for children 0-14 years old seen by >150 family pediatricians in the Pedianet network in Italy were evaluated for 10 influenza seasons spanning 2010-2020. Incidence of influenza (cases per 1000 person-months), related sequelae and associated healthcare resource use were determined using diagnostic, prescription and medical examination data. Results: Over 10 seasons, an average of 8892 influenza cases (range, 4700-12,419; total 88,921) were diagnosed in a cohort of 1,432,384 children 0-14 years of age. Influenza vaccination coverage was 3.6% among children with an influenza diagnosis and 6.8% among children without. Influenza-related healthcare resource utilization included 1.58 family pediatrician visits per influenza episode and 220 ED and 111 hospital admissions, with the highest resource usage among children 1-4 years and lowest among children <6 months old. The most common influenza complications were acute otitis media (2.9% of influenza cases) and pneumonia (0.5%). Antibiotics were prescribed in 38.7% of influenza cases; no antiviral agents were prescribed. One intensive care unit admission and 2 cases requiring ventilatory support were documented. No influenza-related deaths were reported. Conclusion: Pediatric influenza vaccination was low despite the burden and healthcare use related to seasonal influenza in the pediatric population during a 10-year period in Italy.

INTRODUCTION: Fighting pandemics requires an established infrastructure for pandemic preparedness, with existing, sustainable platforms ready to be activated. This includes platforms for disease surveillance, virus circulation and vaccine performance monitoring based on Real-World data, to complement clinical trial evidence. AREAS COVERED: Because of its complexity, this can best be done by combining efforts between public and private sectors, developing a multi-stakeholder approach. Public-Private-Partnerships increasingly play a critical role in combating infectious diseases but are still looked at with hesitancy. The Development of Robust and Innovative Vaccine Effectiveness (DRIVE) project, which established a platform for measuring brand-specific influenza vaccine effectiveness in Europe, exemplifies how to build a collaborative platform with transparent governance, state-of-the-art methodology, and a large network of participating sites. Lessons learned from DRIVE have been cardinal to set up COVIDRIVE, a platform for brand-specific COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness monitoring. EXPERT OPINION: The DRIVE partners propose that a debate on the benefits of Public-Private-Partnership-generated real-world evidence for vaccine effectiveness monitoring should be pursued to clarify roles and responsibilities, set up expectations, and decide the future environment for vaccine monitoring in Europe. In parallel, the driving factors behind PPP hesitancy should be studied.

The adaptation of influenza seed viruses in egg culture can result in a variable antigenic vaccine match each season. The cell-based quadrivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV4c) contains viruses grown in mammalian cell lines rather than eggs. IIV4c is not subject to egg-adaptive changes and therefore may offer improved protection relative to egg-based vaccines, depending on the degree of match with circulating influenza viruses. We summarize the relative vaccine effectiveness (rVE) of IIV4c versus egg-based quadrivalent influenza vaccines (IIV4e) to prevent influenza-related medical encounters (IRMEs) from three retrospective observational cohort studies conducted during the 2017-2018, 2018-2019, and 2019-2020 US influenza seasons using the same underlying electronic medical record dataset for all three seasons-with the addition of linked medical claims for the latter two seasons. We identified IRMEs using diagnostic codes specific to influenza disease (ICD J09*-J11*) from the records of over 10 million people. We estimated rVE using propensity score methods adjusting for age, sex, race, ethnicity, geographic location, week of vaccination, and health status. Subgroup analyses included specific age groups. IIV4c consistently had higher relative effectiveness than IIV4e across all seasons assessed, which were characterized by different dominant circulating strains and variable antigenic drift or egg adaptation.

Traditional influenza vaccines may be less immunogenic in adults >= 65 years of age due to immunosenescence. Two influenza vaccines-MF59 (R)-adjuvanted trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (aIIV3) and high-dose influenza vaccine (HD-IIV3)-were developed to overcome this problem. We summarize estimates of the relative vaccine effectiveness (rVE) of aIIV3 vs. HD-IIV3 and aIIV3 vs. standard, egg-based quadrivalent influenza vaccines (IIV4e) during the 2017-2018, 2018-2019, and 2019-2020 US influenza seasons using the same underlying electronic medical record and linked claims dataset for all three seasons. The primary outcome was influenza-related medical encounters (IRMEs), defined by diagnostic codes specific to influenza (ICD J09*-J11*). rVE was estimated using propensity score methods adjusting for demographics and health status. rVE estimates demonstrated consistent benefit for aIIV3 over IIV4e in the overall and at-risk populations. Relative to HD-IIV3, aIIV3 provided improved benefit in the overall study population and comparable benefit in the at-risk population across each season.

Natural vision involves the activation of a wide range of higher-level regions processing objects, motion, faces and actions. Here, we pursue a data-driven approach to explore how higher-level visual processes relate to the underlying structural and functional connectivity. Using a free-viewing paradigm in four awake rhesus macaque monkeys, we investigate how different visual scenes change functional connectivity. Additionally, we explore how such functional connectivity, as measured through fMRI, is related to the structural connectivity, as measured through diffusion weighted imaging. At first, we evaluate the consistency of the elicited free-viewing pattern using standard analytical techniques. We also evaluate the underlying structural connectivity via diffusion data by tracking white matter bundle projections from the visual cortex. We then reconstruct free-viewing and structural networks and quantify their properties. Centrality measures over the entire fMRI time-series revealed a consistent functional network engaged during free-viewing that included widespread hub regions across frontal (FEF, 46v), parietal (LIP, Tpt), and occipitotemporal cortex (MT, V4 and TE) among others. Interestingly, a small number of highly-weighted and long-length inter-hemispheric connections indicated the presence of long-range integrative properties during free-viewing. We hypothesized that during free-viewing, networks had the capacity to change their local and distal connections depending on the on-going changes in visual scenes. To capture these network dynamics, we depart from the static modular architecture of the structural networks and demonstrate that hubs in free-viewing networks reorganize according to the presence of objects, motion, and faces in the movie scenes indicating poly-functional properties. Lastly, we compare each NHP subject network and observe high consistency between individuals across the same network type with closer correspondence between structural networks (e.g., diffusion based and those partially assembled from tract-tracing). In summary, our network analyses revealed ongoing changes in large-scale functional organization present during free-viewing in the macaque monkey and highlight the advantages of multi-contrast imaging in awake monkeys for investigating dynamical processes in visual cognition. To further promote the use of naturalistic free-viewing paradigms and increase the development of macaque neuroimaging resources, we share our datasets in the PRIME-DE consortium.

- Abstract
Influenza vaccine effectiveness (IVE) assessment is increasingly stratified by vaccine type or brand, such as done by the European network of DRIVE. In 2019/2020, eleven influenza vaccines were licensed in Europe. If more than one vaccine type is recommended or if more than one vaccine brand is available for a specific risk group, it is not clear which factors affect the choice of a specific vaccine (type or brand) by a health practitioner for individual patients. This is important for IVE assessment. A survey tailored to the 2019/20 local vaccine recommendations was conducted among GPs in four European countries (Austria, Italy, Spain, UK) to understand how influenza vaccine is offered to recommended risk groups and, if GPs have a choice between 2 or more vaccines, what factors influence their vaccine choice for patients. Overall, 360 GPs participated. In Austria, Italy and Spain GPs indicated that influenza vaccines are commonly offered when patients present for consultation, whereas in the UK all GPs indicated that all relevant patients are contacted by letter. In Austria and Italy, roughly 80% of GPs had only one vaccine type available for patients 65y in Austria (45%), Italy (70%) and Spain (79%). In this group, patient characteristics played a role in choice of vaccine, notably older age and presence of (multiple) comorbidities. Knowing that a non-patient related factor usually determines the vaccine type a patient receives in settings where more than one vaccine type is recommended for risk groups 65y.

- Abstract
This chapter deals with morphological and syntactic defaults in Ripano (Italo-Romance), using the toolkit of Network Morphology and Canonical Typology. Analyzing noun and adjective inflection, we propose a unitary inheritance hierarchy for nominals which features a general default plus overrides specifying class-specific rules of exponence. The hierarchy accounts for gender assignment along with inflectional classes, as Ripano has overwhelmingly overt gender. This also offers the link to the syntax, because in Ripano overt gender is not context-free but depends on syntactic context, a property never described for any other language of the world. We show that one can distinguish a normal vs an exceptional-case default and conclude on how these relate to the morphological default established in the inheritance hierarchy.
