Abstract

Cographs--defined most simply as complete graphs with colored lines--both dualize and generalize ordinary graphs, and promise a comparably wide range of applications. This article introduces them by examples, catalogues, and elementary properties. Any finite cograph may be realized in several ways, including inner products, polynomials, geometrically, or by "fat intersections." Particular classes then considered include sum cographs (points in Z or Zn; the line C(P,Q) joining points P and Q defined C(P,Q) = P+Q); difference cographs (C(P,Q) = |P-Q|; and intersection cographs (points are sets; C(P,Q) = P intersect Q). Intersection cographs, especially, promise many applications; described here are some to aesthetics. Point-line cographs turn out equivalent to linear spaces. Finally solved here is an interesting group-theoretic problem arising from group cographs (points in a group; C(P,Q) = {PQ,QP}).

7. Investigating the molecular mechanisms of the metabolic control of T cell migration and functions : lactate controls pro-inflammatory T cell migration and function

Abstract

Lactate has long been considered a "waste"-by-product of cellular metabolism, and it is known to accumulate in inflammatory sites. Recent findings have suggested lactate as signaling metabolite, yet its effects on immune cells during inflammation are largely unexplored. This project hence aimed to examine the effects of extracellular lactate on the function of T cells. I found that the elevated concentration of lactate present in synovia of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients inhibits the migration of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, mediated via the subtype specific transporters Slc5a12 and Slc16a1, respectively. In addition, lactate decreases the cytolytic activity in CD8+ and induces the production of IL-17 in CD4+ T cells. Intracellular, lactate causes a change in redox state, the increase of TCA-cycle metabolites, the production of ROS and a drop in ATP levels. Concomitantly, I found a decrease of glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation with no effect on fatty acid metabolism. This metabolic inhibition caused an adaptation attempt to rescue the glycolytic flux due to the relocation of HK1 to the mitochondrial membrane. I further show that the lactate-mediated reduction of glycolysis is the cause for the observed migratory inhibition in CD4+ T cells, possibly mediated by the NAD+- dependent enzymes SIRT1 and PARP1. Similarly, I found the lactate-induced IL-17 production to be dependent on NAD metabolism, fatty acid synthesis and FOXO1. Finally, I could causatively link lactate signaling to chronic T cell infiltrates in RA, as I show that the expression of lactate transporters correlates with the clinical T cell score in the synovia of RA patients. Pharmacological or antibody-mediated blockade of subtype-specific lactate transporters on T cells results in their release from the inflammatory site in a model of peritonitis. These findings establish lactate as active signaling metabolite that contributes to the perpetuation of chronic inflammation and provide novel therapeutic approaches to combat chronic inflammatory diseases.

Abstract

Lamiaceae is a botanical family rich in aromatic species that are in high demand such as basil, lavender, mint, oregano, sage, and thyme. It has great economical, ecological, ethnobotanical, and floristic importance. The aim of this work is to provide an updated view on the aerobiology of species from the family Lamiaceae, with an emphasis on novelties and emerging applications. From the aerobiology point of view, the greatest interest in this botanical family is related to the volatile organic compounds emitted by the plants and, to a much lesser extent, their pollen. Research has shown that the major volatile organic compounds emitted by the plants from this botanical family are monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. The most important monoterpenes reported across studies include α-pinene, β-pinene, 1,8-cineole, menthol, limonene, and γ-terpinene. Most reports tend to cover species from the subfamily Nepetoideae. Volatile oils are produced by glandular trichomes found on aerial organs. Based on general morphology, two main types are found in the family Lamiaceae, namely peltate and capitate trichomes. As a result of pollinator-mediated transfer of pollen, Lamiaceae species present a reduced number of stamens and quantity of pollen. This might explain the low probability of pollen presence in the air from these species. A preliminary synopsis of the experimental evidence presented in this work suggests that the interplay of the organic particles and molecules released by these plants and their environment could be leveraged for beneficial outcomes in agriculture and landscaping. Emerging reports propose their use for intercropping to ensure the success of fructification, increased yield of entomophilous crops, as well as in sensory gardens due to the therapeutic effect of volatiles. 17. Esthetic Outcomes for Immediate Implant Placement with Immediate Provisionalization in the Anterior Maxilla with Buccal Dehiscence: Results of a Comparative Pilot Study.

Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this pilot exploratory cohort study was to assess the value of buccal augmentation in immediate implant placement and immediate restoration of anterior teeth in maxillae with missing buccal lamellar bone with regard to esthetic parameters, as well as soft and hard tissue level changes. Materials and Methods: This study compared three groups of 10 patients each with immediate implant placement and immediate restoration in the anterior maxilla: (1) patients with partially to totally missing buccal bone with simultaneous augmentation with bovine collagen (test group augmented [TGA]); (2) patients with partially to totally missing buccal bone without augmentation (test group nonaugmented [TNA]); and (3) patients with intact buccal lamellar bone (control group [CG]). The pink esthetic score (PES) and the course of the peri-implant bone level after 1, 3, and 12 months were used as assessment criteria. Results: Af ter 12 months, the PES in the TGA was assessed as being better than it was preoperatively (mean ± SD: 8 ± 3.09 vs 9.25 ± 3.01, respectively, P = .8243), while it remained almost identical in the other two groups (TNA = 8.75 ± 2.7 vs 8.6 ± 3.3, P = .4098; CG = 10.6 ± 2.41 vs 10.6 ± 2.22, P = .7085). A significant difference among the PES values of the three groups was not observed at any point in time (preoperative: P = .118, 12 months: P = .383). In total, the TNA and CG showed an improvement in 3 out of 7 parameters of the PES after 12 months, while this was the case in 5 out of 7 parameters in the TGA. No significant difference among the three groups could be seen at any time point regarding peri-implant bone level. In the CG and TGA patients, a nonsignificant improvement in peri-implant bone level was seen after 12 months (respectively: 1.6 mm to 0.99 mm; P = .08068; 1.89 mm to 1.73 mm; P = .5866). In contrast, TNA patients showed a nonsignificant deterioration vs the postoperative situation (1.16 mm to 1.45 mm; P = .08208). Conclusion: Within the limitations of this pilot study, it can be concluded that a missing buccal lamellar bone appears to be no contraindication for immediate implant placement and immediate restoration, provided the baseline esthetic situation is accepted. As compared to the nonaugmented defect group or the group with intact lamellar bone, neither the esthetic nor the radiologic results could be improved significantly by augmentation with bovine collagen. 20. Multiple dental implant failures: A retrospective analysis of implant retention time and risk factors.

Abstract

Background: The present retrospective study investigates implant retention time in patients who had experienced multiple implant failures and explores possible risk factors. Materials and methods: Patients who underwent placement of at least two implants and experienced failure of two or more implants between 2004 and 2022 were included in the study population. Both patient- and implant-related risk factors, including age, sex, medical history, medication intake, smoking, alcohol consumption, implant properties and anatomical and surgical factors, were evaluated. Descriptive analysis and univariate and multivariate statistical analysis were performed to assess implant retention time and failure risk, with the level of statistical significance set at 0.05. Results: A total of 371 patients (178 men and 193 women, median age 63 years) with 3,141 implants were included in the analysis (3.14% of all patients treated since 2004). Out of these implants, 1,090 failures were observed (59.01% of all failed implants at the Academy of Oral Implantology, Vienna, Austria), with a median retention time of 108.11 months. Patients who lost teeth due to periodontitis did not show a tendency towards early implant failure (P > 0.001). Nicotine consumption (P < 0.001), age < 50 years and > 70 years (P < 0.001), maxillary location (P = 0.05), transgingival healing (P < 0.001), no provisional restoration (P = 0.035) and short implant length (P < 0.001) were associated with statistically significantly shorter implant retention times. Conclusions: Patients with multiple implant failures displayed cluster behaviour and had a median implant retention time of 9 years. Smoking, short implant length, single-stage surgery and immediate loading were all associated with a higher risk of failure, whereas age between 50 and 70 years and tooth loss due to periodontitis were associated with a longer implant retention time. Abstract

This document feeds research and development priorities devel-oped by the European HPC ecosystem into EuroHPC’s Research and Innovation Advisory Group with an aim to define the HPC Technology research Work Programme and the calls for proposals included in it and to be launched from 2023 to 2026. This SRA also describes the major trends in the deployment of HPC and HPDA methods and systems, driven by economic and societal needs in Europe, taking into account the changes ex-pected in the technologies and architectures of the expanding underlying IT infrastructure. The goal is to draw a complete pic-ture of the state of the art and the challenges for the next three to four years rather than to focus on specific technologies, implementations or solutions.

38. Unconventional HPC Architectures

Abstract

Moore’s Law, which stated that “the complexity for minimum component costs has increased at a rate of roughly a factor of two per year “, is slowing down due to the enormous cost of developing new process generations along with feature sizes approximating silicon interatomic distances. With the end of Dennard scaling (i.e; the rather constant power density across technology nodes, and the increase of operating frequency with each technology node) more than 15 years ago, using more transistors to build increasingly parallel architectures was a key focus. Now, other ways need to be found to deliver further advances in performance. This can be achieved by a combination of innovations at all levels: technology (3D stacking, using physics carry out computations, etc.), architecture (e.g., specialization, computing in/near memory, dataflow), software, algorithms and new ways to represent information (e.g., neuromorphic – coding information “in time” with “spikes”, quantum, mixed precision). A closely related challenge is the energy required to move data, which can be orders of magnitude higher than the energy of the computation itself. These challenges give rise to new unconventional HPC architectures, which, through some form of specialisation, achieve more efficient and faster computations. This paper covers a range of new unconventional HPC architectures which are currently emerging. While these architectures and their underlying requirements are naturally diverse, AI emerges as a technology that drives the development of both novel architectures and computational techniques due to its dissemination and computing requirements. The ever-increasing demand of AI applications requires more efficient computation of data centric algorithms. Furthermore, minimising data movement and improving data locality plays an important role in achieving high performance while limiting power dissipation and this is reflected in both architectures and programming models. We also cover models of computation that differ from those used in conventional CPU architectures, or models that are purely focussed on achieving performance through parallelisation. Abstract

Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, when spring began to make itself felt, photos showed New Yorkers enjoying the outdoors, while properly socially distanced, by sitting on the grass in a square lattice of circles. But the planners should have consulted a mathematician for the design, because significantly more people (over 15% more) could enjoy the same area safely if the circles were closer packed into a hexagonal lattice.

40. Intersection Cographs and Aesthetics

Abstract

Cographs are complete graphs with colored lines (edges); in an intersection cograph, the points (vertices) and lines (edges) are labeled by sets, and the line between each pair of points is (or represents) their intersection. This article first presents the elementary theory of intersection cographs: 15 are possible on 4 points; constraints on the triangles and quadrilaterals; some forbidden configurations; and how, under suitable constraints, to generate the points from the lines alone. The mathematical theory is then applied to aesthetics, using set cographs to describe the experience of a person enjoying a picture (Mu Qi), poem (Dickinson), play (Shakespeare), or piece of music (Anna Magdalena Bach).
