Using flow equations, equilibrium and non-equilibrium dynamics of a two-level system are investigated, which couples via non-commuting components to two independent oscillator baths. In equilibrium the two-level energy splitting is protected when the TLS is coupled symmetrically to both bath. A critical asymmetry angle separates the localized from the delocalized phase. Several heavy-fermion metals display a quantum phase transition from an antiferromagnetic metal to a heavy Fermi liquid. In some materials, however, recent experiments seem to find that the heavy Fermi liquid phase can be directly tuned into a non-Fermi liquid phase without apparent magnetic order. We analyze a candidate state for this scenario where the local moment system forms a spin liquid with gapless fermionic excitations. We discuss the thermal conductivity and spin susceptibility of this fractionalized state both in two and, in particular, three spatial dimensions for different temperature regimes. We derive a variational functional for the thermal conductivity and solve it with a variational ansatz dictated by Keldysh formalism. In sufficiently clean samples and for an appropriate temperature window, we find that thermal transport is dominated by the spinon contribution which can be detected by a characteristic maximum in the Wiedemann-Franz ratio. For the spin susceptibility, the conduction electron Pauli paramagnetism is much smaller than the spinon contribution whose temperature dependence in three dimensions is logarithmically enhanced as compared to the Fermi liquid result., Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures

The heavy-fermion metal YbRh2Si2 displays a field-driven quantum phase transition where signatures of a Fermi-surface reconstruction have been identified, often interpreted as breakdown of the Kondo effect. We argue that instead many properties of the material can be consistently described assuming a Zeeman-driven Lifshitz transition of narrow heavy-fermion bands. Using a suitable quasiparticle model, we find a smeared jump in the Hall constant and lines of maxima in susceptibility and specific heat, very similar to experimental data. An intermediate non-Fermi liquid regime emerges due to the small effective Fermi energy near the transition. After a brief review of current ideas on stripe order in cuprate high-temperature superconductors, we discuss the quasiparticle Nernst effect in the cuprates, with focus on its evolution in non-superconducting stripe and related nematic states. In general, we find the Nernst signal to be strongly enhanced by nearby van-Hove singularities and Lifshitz transitions in the band structure, implying that phases with translation symmetry breaking often lead to a large quasiparticle Nernst effect due to the presence of multiple small Fermi pockets. Open orbits may contribute to the Nernst signal as well, but do so in a strongly anisotropic fashion. We discuss our results in the light of recent proposals for a specific Lifshitz transition in underdoped YBCO and make predictions for the doping dependence of the Nernst signal., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figs, article prepared for a special issue of New J Phys

We analyze the thermoelectric response in layered metals with spontaneously broken rotation symmetry. We identify the anisotropy of the quasiparticle Nernst signal as an extremely sensitive probe of Fermi surface distortions characteristic of the ordered state. This is due to a subtle interplay of different transport anisotropies which become additionally enhanced near van-Hove singularities. Applied to recent experiments, our results reinforce the proposal that the underdoped cuprate superconductor YBCO displays such ``electron-nematic'' order in the pseudogap regime., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figs; (v2) slight changes and clarifications

An analytical description of non-equilibrium phenomena in interacting quantum systems is rarely possible. Here we present one example where such a description can be achieved, namely the ferromagnetic Kondo model. In equilibrium, this model is tractable via perturbative renormalization-group techniques. We employ a recently developed extension of the flow-equation method to calculate the non-equilibrium decay of the local magnetization at zero temperature. The flow equations admit analytical solutions which become exact at short and long times, in the latter case revealing that the system always retains a memory of its initial state., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Experiments on underdoped cuprate superconductors suggest an intricate relation between the normal-state Nernst effect and stripe order: The Nernst signal appears enhanced near 1/8 hole doping and its onset temperature scales with the stripe-ordering temperature over some range of doping. Here, we employ a phenomenological quasiparticle model to calculate the normal state Nernst signal in the presence of stripe order. We find that Fermi pockets caused by translational symmetry breaking lead to a strongly enhanced Nernst signal with a sign depending on the modulation period of the ordered state and other details of the Fermi surface. Motivated by recent experiments on molecular quantum dots we investigate the relaxation of pure spin states when coupled to metallic leads. Under suitable conditions these systems are well described by a ferromagnetic Kondo model. Using two recently developed theoretical approaches, the time-dependent numerical renormalization group and an extended ow equation method, we calculate the real-time evolution of a Kondo spin into its partially screened steady state. We obtain exact analytical results which agree well with numerical implementations of both methods. Analytical expressions for the steady state magnetization and the dependence of the long-time relaxation on microscopic parameters are established. We find the long-time relaxation process to be much faster in the regime of anisotropic Kondo couplings. The steady state magnetization is found to deviate significantly from its thermal equilibrium value., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, final version as accepted by Physical Review Letters

We calculate the normal state Nernst signal in the cuprates resulting from a reconstruction of the Fermi surface due to spin density wave order. An order parameter consistent with the reconstruction of the Fermi surface detected in electron-doped materials is shown to sharply enhance the Nernst signal close to optimal doping. Motivated by pressure experiments on FeAs-122 superconductors, we propose a scenario based on local-moment physics to explain the simultaneous disappearance of magnetism, reduction of the unit cell volume, and decrease in resistivity. In this scenario, the low-pressure magnetic phase derives from Fe moments, which become screened in the paramagnetic high-pressure phase. The quantum phase transition can be described as an orbital-selective Mott transition, which is rendered first order by coupling to the lattice, in analogy to a Kondo volume collapse. Spin-fluctuation driven superconductivity competes with antiferromagnetism and may be stabilized at low temperatures in the high-pressure phase. The unconventional critical behavior near magnetic quantum phase transitions in various heavy-fermion metals, apparently inconsistent with the standard spin-density-wave scenario, has triggered proposals on the breakdown of the Kondo effect at the critical point. Here we investigate, within one specific scenario, the fate of such a zero-temperature transition upon coupling of the electronic to lattice degrees of freedom. We study a Kondo-Heisenberg model with volume-dependent Kondo coupling -- this model displays both Kondo volume collapse and Kondo-breakdown transitions, as well as Lifshitz transitions associated with a change of the Fermi-surface topology. Within a large-N treatment, we find that the Lifshitz transition tends to merge with the Kondo volume collapse and hence becomes first order, whereas the Kondo breakdown transition remains of second order except for very soft lattices. Interesting physics emerges at the zero-temperature endpoint of the Kondo volume collapse: For electrons in two space dimensions, this endpoint is located at the Lifshitz line for a large range of parameters, thus two continuous quantum phase transitions coincide without fine tuning. We analyze the effective Landau theory for such a situation and discuss critical exponents.
