Abstract

An approach to reduce the computational effort required to determine the worst-case gust loads for aircraft is described, specifically when structural modifications are included as part of the design process. The Sherman-Morrison-Woodbury formula is employed to determine the gust response of the modified structure using a reanalysis approach and to undertake an efficient modal reanalysis. The approach is demonstrated successfully using a simple wing and full-scale aircraft finite-element models to determine the worst-case "1-cosine" gust following structural modification. Savings of about 56% were achieved for gust-response computations and 50% for the modal reanalysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

18. Porous piezoelectric materials for energy harvesting

Abstract

In this paper, we assess the energy harvesting capabilities of porous piezoelectric material under harmonic\ud excitation and investigate the advantages of functionally grading the air inclusions. A cantilever beam energy\ud harvester with base excitation is used to demonstrate the effects of porosity on the power generated. A\ud homogenization step using the analytical Mori-Tanaka approach is performed initially to reduce the computational\ud requirements. This homogenization will estimate the material properties for different levels of\ud porosity. An Euler-Bernoulli beam model is used to efficiently estimate the power generated for a piezoelectric\ud sensor with uniform properties. A 2D finite element model is then developed to verify the beam model;\ud this detailed model may be used to analyze harvesters where the porosity varies through the thickness or\ud along the length of the beams. An optimization is performed, focusing on the impact of the percentage of\ud inclusions on the energy harvesting efficiency
