9. G-type variation in bacteria

Abstract

In 1931 Hadley, Delves and Klimek described a filterable variant of B. dysenteriae Shiga which was distinguished by individual morphological and cultural characters and which they termed the G-type. Since that date a number of papers have appeared confirming their discovery either in whole or in part. The observations recorded in the present thesis are in almost perfect agreement with the statements of Hadley and his co- workers, although it must not be assumed that agreement extends to the details of interpretation. The G organism - derived in the present case from B. oaratyphosus B (Tidy) - proved to be a Gram-negative coccus growing only very slowly in broth and giving rise to minute colonies on agar; differing markedly from the parent culture in biochemical properties; relatively though variably heat -resistant; avirulent and non -toxic; and resistant to a strain of bacteriophage active against B. aratylhosus B. Over a considerable period of time the G organism tended to give off Gram-negative bacillary variants, all of which showed close biochemical relationship to the G form and to one another. No reversion occurred to the parent form. These features - and others - are discussed in detail in relation to the published work of Hadley and other authors. The discussion also includes an appraisement of the significance of these findings for the homogamic theory of the origin of bacteriophage (Hadley), and a section on the possible relation of filterable forms of bacteria to the problems of communicable disease.

Abstract

The article offers information about the total social duty of a scientist. The author holds that the social function of the scientist is the sum of three factors that includes the objective provision of new knowledge, without regard to its use for good or ill, the appreciation not only of the facts, but also of their implications and possible consequences again regardless of choice, and the political choice between one or other course of action. Then, he enumerates the duties of the scientist which includes protecting the unity and universality of science, fostering the growth of science in all its branches, countering the imbalance or disparate growth which can result from the diversion of resources from long-range to short-range objectives, and more.

Abstract

This contribution to the discussion must take the form merely of an impersonal review of more recent progress in the treatment of prostatic cancer—developments which are mainly due to the work of Huggins and his collaborators at the University of Chicago (on treatment of carcinoma of the prostate by castration and by the administration of œstrogenic substances), to Herrold (treatment with œstrogens), and to Munger (auxiliary treatment by X-irradiation of the testes). I can lay no claim to any first-hand acquaintance with the clinical problem, and one's only justification for presenting this survey is that the new discoveries are of considerable fundamental as well as practical importance, and that they bear a close relation to problems which we have been investigating (at the Chester Beatty Research Institute of the Royal Cancer Hospital) along more general lines.
