The experience of homelessness goes beyond being houseless and requires a whole-person-in-context approach. Although scant and varied, research with people experiencing homelessness suggests positive benefits from music therapy. Narrative reviews are helpful to synthesize literature with varied levels of evidence and research perspectives. The purpose of this narrative literature review is to provide a critical overview of the extant music therapy literature related to people experiencing homelessness and to inform recommendations for future research and practice. The 22 studies that meet inclusion criteria focused on three main areas of knowledge: (a) the impact of music therapy on people experiencing homelessness, (b) considerations for using music therapy with people experiencing homelessness, and (c) both a and b. Studies about the impact of music therapy indicate benefits including experiencing, regulating, and expressing emotions; engaging in meaningful connection and support; and developing and expressing identities that resist oppression. Other studies offer considerations related to musical preferences, aspects of the therapeutic process, and the therapists' position in terms of culture and power. Ongoing research about the role of music therapy in approaching and understanding homelessness is recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Promoting physical wellness for preschool-aged children with developmental disorders (DD) is a known challenge. Interventions are more likely to succeed when physical activity opportunities are available to children within the context of their typical environments. We evaluated the feasibility and preliminary effect of 1 potential solution: structured creative dance classes delivered within a preschool environment. Methods: Using a non-randomized feasibility study design, we offered physical activity in the form of creative dance classes for children with and without DD within an inclusive preschool. Classes lasted 30 minutes and were held once a week or 7 weeks. We measured attendance (primary), observed active participation (% of class duration), and balance (Pediatric Balance Scale). Non-parametric descriptive statistics are expressed as median (interquartile range). Balance was evaluated regarding (a) difference between groups at baseline (Mann-Whitney statistic) and (b) intervention effect for children with DD (1-tailed, paired t-test). Results: Twelve preschoolers (age range = 3-5 years) participated: 4 with DD and 8 with neurotypical development. Attendance was 93% (79%-100%) for children with and 100% for children without DD. Per class, rate of active participation in dance activity was 33% (28%-45%) for children with and 80% (71%-82%) for children without DD. Starting balance scores were lower (P =.014) for children with DD (42 (39-45)) compared to those without (51 (50-52)). Post-intervention, balance scores improved for the children with DD to 50 (50-51) (df = 3, p =.014, t -statistic = 2.35); each child with DD surpassed minimal detectable change for balance. Conclusion: Creative dance classes, delivered within an inclusive preschool environment, are feasible for some preschool-aged children with DD to participate in and efficacious as a physical training challenge at low activity doses. Purpose: The WomanKind program, a non-profit health care based program for for victims of domestic/intimate partner violence (IPV), seeks to enable and motivate health care providers to identify victims of such violence and refer them to WomanKind's in-house services. An evaluation designed to assess client referral to WomanKind services and the impact of health care provider training was carried out. Methods: Data were collected at three intervals over a 2-year period at 3 intervention and 2 comparison hospitals located in Minneapolis, MN. The focus of data collection efforts was to assess the providers' knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors (KABB) concerning identification and referral of victims of IPV. Hospital staff and volunteer advocate training programs also were evaluated. Chart reviews were conducted and client referrals assessed. Results: Providers at WomanKind hospitals demonstrated significantly higher knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and behaviors than those at comparison hospitals throughout the study. During the data collection period, 1719 IPV victims were identified and referred to the WomanKind program, while only 27 IPV victims were referred to trained social workers at the comparison hospitals. Chart reviews indicated that emergency staff at the intervention sites provide documentation of IPV in patient records twice as frequently as emergency staff at the comparison sites. Conclusion: This research underscores the efficacy of a well-structured, multidisciplinary effort to deliver services to IPV victims. The results demonstrate that specialized training and on-site client services create a significant positive impact on the KABB of health care providers.
