Abstract

In angle-resolved photoelectron spectra of the antiferromagnetic insulators Ca2CuO2Cl2 and Sr2CuO2Cl2 a sharp drop of the spectral intensity of the lowest-lying band is observed along a line in k space equivalent to the Fermi surface of the optimally doped high-temperature superconductors. This was interpreted as a signature of the existence of a remnant Fermi surface in the insulating phase of the high-temperature superconductors. In this paper it is shown that the drop of the spectral intensity is not related to the spectral function but is a consequence of the electron-photon matrix element, Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Band structure calculations have been used to identify the different bands contributing to the polarisation-dependent photoemission spectra of the undoped model cuprate Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ at the high-symmetry points of the CuO$_2$ plane $\Gamma$, $(\pi/a,0)$ and $(\pi/a,\pi/a)$ and along the high-symmetry directions $\Gamma - (\pi/a,\pi/a)$ and $\Gamma - (\pi/a,0)$. Results from calculations within the local density approximation (LDA) have been compared with calculations taking into account the strong electron correlations by LDA+U, with the result that the experimental order of energy levels at the high-symmetry points is better described by the LDA+U calculation than by the simple LDA. All the main peaks in the photoemission spectra at the high symmetry points could be assigned to different Cu 3$d$ and O 2$p$ orbitals which we have classified according to their point symmetries. The dispersions along the high-symmetry directions were compared with an 11-band tight-binding model which was fitted both to the LDA+U band structure calculation and the angle-resolved photoemission data. The mean field treatment successfully describes the oxygen derived bands but shows discrepancies for the copper ones., Comment: 13 pages, 16 figures, 5 tables

Abstract

Research was conducted to examine the cardioprotective effects of KB-R7943 (KB) in isolated rat cardiomyocytes exposed to 80 minutes of simulated ischemia and 15 minutes of reoxygenation. The objective was to investigate, on the cellular level, the effects ofKB on cytosolic ion homeostatis during ATP depletion. Results indicate that the treatment of KB during anoxia effectively inhibits CA2+ overload and attenuates reoxygenation-induced injury of cardiomyocytes.

Abstract

Aims Predicting incident diabetes could inform treatment strategies for diabetes prevention, but the incremental benefit of recalculating risk using updated risk factors is unknown. We used baseline and 1-year data from the Nateglinide and Valsartan in Impaired Glucose Tolerance Outcomes Research (NAVIGATOR) Trial to compare diabetes risk prediction using historical or updated clinical information. Methods Among non-diabetic participants reaching 1 year of follow-up in NAVIGATOR, we compared the performance of the published baseline diabetes risk model with a “landmark” model incorporating risk factors updated at the 1-year time point. The C-statistic was used to compare model discrimination and reclassification analyses to demonstrate the relative accuracy of diabetes prediction. Results A total of 7527 participants remained non-diabetic at 1 year, and 2375 developed diabetes during a median of 4 years of follow-up. The C-statistic for the landmark model was higher (0.73 [95% CI 0.72–0.74]) than for the baseline model (0.67 [95% CI 0.66–0.68]). The landmark model improved classification to modest (40%) 4-year risk, with a net reclassification index of 0.14 (95% CI 0.10–0.16) and an integrated discrimination index of 0.01 (95% CI 0.003–0.013). Conclusions Using historical clinical values to calculate diabetes risk reduces the accuracy of prediction. Diabetes risk calculations should be routinely updated to inform discussions about diabetes prevention at both the patient and population health levels.
