Abstract

Background: Understanding the current surveillance activity and the challenges is important to ensure a continuous success toward the elimination goal for tuberculosis (TB). South Batinah Governorate (SBG) ranked the fourth on the top reporting governorates in the period 2010–2016 in Oman. The objective of this study is to describe the epidemiological profile and activities of the surveillance program of TB in the SBG in the years 2017 and 2018. Methods: A retrospective quantitative analysis and a qualitative review were performed to the surveillance data present in the department of disease surveillance and control in the SBG in the years 2017 and 2018. Results: A total of 39 pulmonary TB (PTB) and 21 extrapulmonary TB (EPTB) cases were diagnosed in 2017 and 2018. More Omanis (22, 56.4%) were diagnosed with PTB compared to non-Omanis; however, the EPTB was solely diagnosed among Omanis (P < 0.001). Abstract

This position statement follows to the thematic round table organized by S.I.E.M.eS. (Italian Society of Movement and Sport Education) as final event of the international congress on "Outdoor movement education" held in Bozen, Italy, december 3-5, 2020. Today’s lifestyle with interesting electronic devices attracts young children to spend time inside instead going out to play in a physically active manner. At the same time, recent research evidence has shown that outdoor active play (outdoor play) offers multiple advantages to children’s development and health. In December 2020, the University of Bozen organized an international congress on the relevance of outdoor movement education and outdoorplay. The Congress ended with a round table discussion of the different approaches to outdoor movement education practiced in Europe, and the need for a common position statement was agreed on that would involve other scientists who participated in the Congress. The position statement is based on comparison of the different practices in European countries and is aimed at defining a consensus in terms of approaches and terminology for outdoor movement education that may be shared between European educators. The comparative analysis was conducted between different regions of Europe: south (Italy), middle (Wales and Belgium, Wallonia), and north (Finland, Iceland and Norway). Comparisons of the different regions were based on official national documents, including laws, educational curriculums, and research findings. Results revealed that some regions, mostly the Nordic Countries, have a strong outdoor culture on which the official national documents are based. In these countries, the outdoor environment is included in teacher education programmes and national curriculums for early education and elementary school. This is not the case everywhere in Europe, where other countries are now starting to spread the outdoor culture in the school environment. On the other hand, there is a need for more research-based knowledge about the amount and types of children’s outdoor movement in all regions, including the most advanced ones. With this position statement, the Congress participants and organizers underscore the need to increase the knowledge of the importance of outdoor play in supporting children’s motor development and holistic development. There is a compelling need to change official documents to guarantee adequate possibilities for outdoor movement education and outdoor active play. The outdoor environment should become part of the daily pedagogical routine of children, and special care should be given to active movement. The aim of this position statement is to help to reach a consensus in the educational community that must act in collaboration with multiple sociocultural players and stakeholders (at local, national and European levels) and be driven by scientific research. peerReviewed

21. Cross-Cultural Aspects: Exploring Motor Competence Among 7- to 8-Year-Old Children From Greece, Italy, and Norway

Abstract

Motor development is affected by maturation and growth but also influenced by the specific environmental and cultural context. Therefore, cross-cultural research can provide information about how different cultural contexts, lifestyles, and physical activity contexts can influence the process of developing motor competence. The purpose of this study was to evaluate aspects of motor competence among children from different cultural backgrounds. The sample of 463 children from 6 to 8 years consisting of 132 Greek children (52.3 % boys), 126 Italian children (53.9 % boys), and 205 Norwegian children (52.7) completed the Test of Motor Competence (TMC) including two fine motor tasks—Placing Bricks and Building Bricks—and two gross motor tasks—Heel to Toe Walking and Walking/Running in Slopes. The results indicate that the Norwegian children performed better in all tests; the differences were statistically significant in all four tasks compared with Italian children and in two tasks compared with the Greek children (Building Bricks and Heel to Toe Walking). Greek children performed significantly better than the Italians in two tasks: Placing Bricks and Heel to Toe Walking. Italian children were significantly faster than the Greek ones in one task: Walking/Running in Slopes. The differences in terms of levels of basic fine and gross motor skills between children from the different countries may be a consequence of both different physical activity contexts and cultural policies, attitudes, and habits toward movement. © 2018, The Author(s) 2018.

Abstract

We report the case of a 58-year-old woman who underwent repair of a chronic dissecting thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm. Using a method of aneurysmoplasty under normothermic cardiopulmonary bypass, all intercostal arteries were quickly reperfused, and the spinal cord ischemic time was minimized. No neurological deficits developed in our patient using this method.

Abstract

Inter- and intra-modal matching by right hand preferred Norwegian adults were tested using a matching task. The task required them to locate target pins visually, proprioceptively or in combination, while matching was always carried out without vision. When combined scores for both hands were analysed, the females showed superior performance in the intra-modal matching condition. For both groups, when the scores for the two hands were treated separately, superior performance was obtained in using the right hand to match under the visual condition. The only significant sex difference relative to hand preference was that the females matched the target more accurately with the right hand in the intra-modal matching condition. These findings are discussed relative to inter-hemispheric processing

Abstract

The article aims at characterizing vertical and horizontal types of cultural heritage dissemination. It offers an essayistic reflection on selected cultural examples from the East and the West which are relevant for the understanding of the multileveled and multidimensional nature of the role of cultural heritage in intercultural relations. The examples discussed in the article include: Buddhism, Hellenism, the history of Gdańsk/Danzing and the Great Empire of Manchuria. Although deliberately no final conclusions are drawn, the article provides a point of departure for a deeper understanding of cultural globalization.
