Abstract

We present the first experimental evidence of the scissors mode in the superheavy nucleus $^{254}$No produced in the $^{208}$Pb($^{48}$Ca, 2nγ))$^{254}$No reaction. The spectrum of γ rays emitted by the excited $^{254}$No nuclei shows an enhanced γ-ray yield for transition energies of ≈2.5 MeV. By measuring the linear polarization properties of the emitted γ rays, we confirm that the transitions in the enhancement region are predominantly of magnetic-dipole character, characteristic for the scissors mode. To further characterize the enhanced γ-ray yield, simulations of the electromagnetic decay of $^{254}$No were performed. The observed enhancement is reproduced by including an M1 component in the γ strength function with total strength B(M1↑)=11.8(19)μN2. This is in good agreement with the integrated M1 strength from sum-rule estimates and new calculations within the quasi-particle random-phase approximation presented here. Our results provide a stringent test of phenomenological formulae for the scissors mode currently used in stellar nucleosynthesis calculations. We find that those formulae are not satisfactory, and we recommend using sum-rule estimates assuming a rigid-body moment of inertia instead for describing the scissors mode in superheavy nuclei.

Abstract

Enhanced γ-decay on the tail of the giant electric dipole resonance, such as the scissors or pygmy resonances, can have significant impact on (n,γ) reaction rates. These rates are important input for modeling processes that take place in astrophysical environments and nuclear reactors. Recent results from the University of Oslo indicate the existence of a significant enhancement in the photon strength function for nuclei in the actinide region due to the scissors resonance. Further, the M1 strength distribution of the scissors resonances in rare earth nuclei has been studied extensively over the years. To investigate the evolution and persistence of the scissor resonance in other mass regions, an experiment was performed utilizing the NaI(Tl) γ-ray detector array (CACTUS) and silicon particle telescopes (SiRi) at the University of Oslo Cyclotron laboratory. Particle-γ coincidences from the 181Ta(d,p)182Ta and 181Ta(d,d')181Ta reactions were used to measure the nuclear level density and photon strength function of the well-deformed 181Ta and 182Ta systems, to investigate the existence of resonances below the neutron separation energy.

Abstract

The γ-ray strength functions and nuclear level densities in the quasi-continuum of 180,181Ta are extracted from particle-γ coincidence events with the Oslo Method, below the Sn. The data were used as input in the TALYS reaction code for calculations of the astrophysical Maxwellian-averaged (n,γ) cross-sections to investigate nucleosynthesis of nature's rarest stable isotope 180Ta.

Particle-γ coincidence experiments were performed at the Oslo Cyclotron Laboratory with the Ta181(d,X) and Ta181(He3,X) reactions to measure the nuclear level densities (NLDs) and γ-ray strength functions (γSFs) of Ta180,181,182 using the Oslo method. The back-shifted Fermi-gas, constant temperature plus Fermi gas, and Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov plus combinatorial models were used for the absolute normalizations of the experimental NLDs at the neutron separation energies. The NLDs and γSFs are used to calculate the corresponding Ta181(n,γ) cross sections and these are compared to results from other techniques. The energy region of the scissors resonance strength is investigated and from the data and comparison to prior work it is concluded that the scissors strength splits into two distinct parts. 8. Re-estimation of Ta nucleosynthesis in light of newly constrained reaction rates

Abstract

Recent measurements of the nuclear level densities and γ-ray strength functions below the neutron thresholds in $^{180,181,182}$Ta are used as input in the nuclear reaction code TALYS. These experimental average quantities are utilized in the calculations of the $^{179,180,181}$Ta radiative neutron capture cross sections. From the latter, astrophysical Maxwellian-averaged (n,γ) cross sections (MACS) and reaction rates are extracted, which in turn are used in large astrophysical network calculations to probe the production mechanism of $^{180}$Ta. These calculations are performed for two scenarios, the s-process production of $^{180,181}$Ta in Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars and the p-process nucleosynthesis of Tam180 in Type-II supernovae. Based on the results from this work, the s-process in stellar evolution is considered negligible in the production of Tam180 whereas $^{181}$Ta is partially produced by AGB stars. The new measurements strongly constrain the production and destruction rates of Tam180 at p-process temperatures and confirm significant production of nature's rarest stable isotope Tam180 by the p-process.

Abstract

Nuclear level densities (NLDs) and Υ-ray strength functions (ΥSFs) of 91,92Zr have been extracted from particle-Υ coincidences using the Oslo method. The extracted ΥSF data, combined with photonuclear cross sections, cover the whole energy range from EΥ = 1.5 MeV up�to the giant dipole resonance at EΥ17MeV. The wide-range ΥSF data display structures at EΥ = 9.5 MeV, compatible with a superposition of the spin-flip M1 resonance and a pygmy E1 resonance. Furthermore, the SF shows a minimum at 2–3 MeV and an increase at lower Υ-ray energies. The experimentally constrained NLDs and SFs are shown to reproduce known and Maxwellian-averaged cross sections for Zr using the TALYS reaction code, thus serving as a benchmark for this indirect method of estimating cross sections for Zr isotopes., SCOPUS: cp.p, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract

The M1-scissors resonance has been measured for the first time in the quasi-continuum of actinides. The strength and position of the resonances in 231,232,233Th were determined by particle-γ coincidences using deuteron induced reactions on a 232Th target. The residual nuclei show a strong integrated strength of BM1 = 9 − 11 µn2 in the Eγ = 1.0 − 3.5 MeV region. The presence of the scissors resonance modifies significantly the (n,γ) cross section, which has impact on fuel-cycle simulations of fast nuclear reactors and nucleosynthesis in explosive stellar environments.

Abstract

The surrogate-reaction method is an indirect way of determining cross sections for reactions that proceed through a compound nucleus. This technique may enable neutron-induced cross sections to be extracted for short-lived nuclei that otherwise cannot be measured. However, the validity of the surrogate method has to be investigated. In particular, the absence of a compound nucleus formation and the Jπ dependence of the decay probabilities may question the method. In this work we study the reactions 238U(d,p)239U, 238U(3He,t)238Np, 238U(3He,4He)237U as surrogates for neutron-induced reactions on 238U, 237Np and 236U, respectively, for which good quality data exist. The experimental set-up enabled the measurement of fission and gamma-decay probabilities. The first results are hereby presented.

Abstract

The lifetimes of the first excited 2^{+}, 4^{+}, and 6^{+} states in ^{98}Zr were measured with the recoil-distance Doppler shift method in an experiment performed at GANIL. Excited states in ^{98}Zr were populated using the fission reaction between a 6.2 MeV/u ^{238}U beam and a ^{9}Be target. The γ rays were detected with the EXOGAM array in correlation with the fission fragments identified by mass and atomic number in the VAMOS++ spectrometer. Our result shows a very small B(E2;2_{1}^{+}→0_{1}^{+}) value in ^{98}Zr, thereby confirming the very sudden onset of collectivity at N=60. The experimental results are compared to large-scale Monte Carlo shell model and beyond-mean-field calculations. The present results indicate the coexistence of two additional deformed shapes in this nucleus along with the spherical ground state.

Abstract

Prompt fission $\gamma$-rays are responsible for approximately 5\% of the total energy released in fission, and therefore important to understand when modelling nuclear reactors. In this work we present prompt $\gamma$-ray emission characteristics in fission, for the first time as a function of the nuclear excitation energy of the fissioning system. Emitted $\gamma$-ray spectra were measured, and $\gamma$-ray multiplicities and average and total $\gamma$ energies per fission were determined for the $^{233}$U(d,pf) reaction for excitation energies between 4.8 and 10 MeV, and for the $^{239}$Pu(d,pf) reaction between 4.5 and 9 MeV. The spectral characteristics show no significant change as a function of excitation energy above the fission barrier, despite the fact that an extra $\sim$5 MeV of energy is potentially available in the excited fragments for $\gamma$-decay. The measured results are compared to model calculations made for prompt $\gamma$-ray emission with the fission model code GEF. Further comparison with previously obtained results from thermal neutron induced fission is made to characterize possible differences arising from using the surrogate (d,p) reaction.

Abstract

Expérience GANIL/EXOGAM/VAMOS; International audience; Lifetimes of the low-lying states in Zn isotopes around N = 40 have been measured using the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift method. The nuclei of interest were populated in deep-inelastic reactions in inverse kinematics. The ratios B(E2; 4+ → 2+)=B(E2; 2+ → 0+) measured for the Zn isotopes follow a systematics consistent with a seniority classification.

Abstract

International audience; Heavy elements above Fm (Z = 100) are nuclei with vanishing liquid-drop fission barriers and are therefore entirely stabilized by quantum shell effects. Due to the large density of single-particle levels and strong polarized Coulomb fields, theoretical predictions of magic numbers are extremely model dependent. Furthermore, shell closures for one nucleon species depend strongly on the number of the other species. Reliable experimental data is needed in order to test and constrain theory. As there is a lack of such data in the region, new data is needed along with the confirmation of previous data. A detection system dedicated to the spectroscopy of transfermium nuclei was constructed in 2004 and installed at the focal plane of the VASSILISSA separator at the FLNR, Dubna, by a Franco-Russian collaboration. The results from the 2009 campaign will be presented.

Abstract

Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) was a political theorist who became famous for her characterization of totalitarianism and the banality of evil. She has also written extensively on the Jewish question, starting with her biography of the nineteenth-century German-Jewish salonnière Rahel Varnhagen, via short columns in which she criticized the Zionist ambitions, to her report of the trial of Nazi-criminal Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem. In all of these works, Arendt showed an original insight in the workings of European society, in which a distinct group such as the Jews are caught in conflicting interests and desires. She searched for an political alternative wherein different groups could co-operate on an equal base. This thesis demonstrates how recurring themes in Arendts thought, such as her aversion to all-explaining ideologies or theories, her emphasis on independent thinking and the need for an free, open political space, originate in her thinking on the history of European Jewry and Zionism.
