Abstract To gain a deeper understanding of the flowering pattern and reproductive characteristics of Epimedium sagittatum, to enrich the research on the flower development of E. sagittatum and its reproductive regulation, and to screen the methods suitable for the rapid detection of pollen viability of E. sagittatum and to promote its cross-breeding. The characteristics of its flower parts were observed, recorded and measured, and the pollen viability of E. sagittatumwas determined by five methods, including TTC staining, I2-KI staining, red ink staining, peroxidase method and in vitro germination method. The flowering process of E. sagittatum can be divided into five stages: calyx dehiscence, bract spathe, petal outgrowth, pollen dispersal, and pollination and withering. The results of I2-KI staining and peroxidase method were significantly higher than those of other methods; the in vitro germination method was intuitive and accurate, but the operation was complicated and time-consuming; the red ink staining method was easy to operate and had obvious staining effect, and the results were the closest to those of the in vitro germination method; and it was found that the pollen of E. sagittatum was not as effective as the in vitro germination method at the bud stamen stage, the flower stigma and the flower bud. It was also found that the pollen viability and germination rate of E. sagittatum pollen were higher in the three periods of bud spitting, petal adductor and pollen dispersal. Comparing the five methods, the red ink staining method was found to be a better method for the rapid detection of pollen viability; the best pollination periods of E. sagittatum were the bud stamen stage, petal adductor stage, and pollen dispersal stage of flowers at the peak of bloom. This study on the flowering and fruiting pattern of E. sagittatum, and the related mechanism of sexual reproduction, can be used as a reference for the next step of research on the breeding of E. sagittatum.

Abstract Background The diagnosis of tuberculous pleurisy (TP) presents a significant challenge due to the low bacterial load in pleural effusion (PE) samples. Cell-free Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA (cf-TB) in PE samples is considered an optimal biomarker for diagnosing TP. This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of cf-TB testing across diverse research sites with a relatively large sample size. Methods Patients suspected of TP and presenting with clinical symptoms and radiological evidence of PE were consecutively enrolled by treating physicians from 11 research sites across 6 provinces in China between April 2020 and August 2022. Following centrifugation, sediments obtained from PE were used for Xpert MTB/RIF (Xpert) and mycobacterial culture, while the supernatants were subjected to cf-TB testing. This study employed a composite reference standard to definite TP, which was characterized by any positive result for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) through either PE culture, PE Xpert, or pleural biopsy. Results A total of 1412 participants underwent screening, and 1344 (95.2%) were subsequently enrolled in this study. Data from 1241 (92.3%) participants were included, comprising 284 with definite TP, 677 with clinically diagnosed TP, and 280 without TP. Abstract The overall picture of degloving skin and soft tissue injuries (DSTI) remains a blank space in China. Therefore, a retrospective study was designed to summarize the current situation of this injury. Patients diagnosed with DSTI hospitalized between 2013 and 2018 were identified from the Hospital Quality Monitoring System (HQMS) database, of whom demographics, injury characteristics, hospitalization and cost information were analyzed. A total of 62,709 patients were enrolled in this study. Male sex predominated, with a mean age of 43.01 ± 19.70 years. Peasants seemed to be the most vulnerable. East China and Hubei province had the most patients. The most and least frequently injured anatomic site were lower extremity and torso, respectively. Traffic-related accidents and summer accounted for the highest proportion in terms of injury mechanism and season. The operation rate of DSTI roughly showed a growing trend, and the average length of stay was 22.02 ± 29.73 days. At discharge, 0.93% of DSTI patients ended up in death. Medicine accounted mostly for hospitalization cost, while the proportion decreased year by year. More than half DSTI patients paid at their own charge. This study made a relatively detailed description of DSTI patients nationwide, and might provide enlightenments for better prevention and treatment.

Cold stress is an important factor that limits apple production. In this study, we examined the tissue-cultured plantlets of apple rootstocks ‘M9T337’ and ‘60-160’, which are resistant and sensitive to cold stress, respectively. The enriched pathways of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and physiological changes in ‘M9T337’ and ‘60-160’ plantlets were clearly different after cold stress (1°C) treatment for 48 h, suggesting that they have differential responses to cold stress. The differential expression of WRKY transcription factors in the two plantlets showed that MdWRKY40is and MdWRKY48 are potential regulators of cold tolerance. When we overexpressed MdWRKY40is and MdWRKY48 in apple calli, the overexpression of MdWRKY48 had no significant effect on the callus, while MdWRKY40is overexpression promoted anthocyanin accumulation, increased callus cold tolerance, and promoted the expression of anthocyanin structural gene MdDFR and cold-signaling core gene MdCBF2. Yeast one-hybrid screening and electrophoretic mobility shift assays showed that MdWRKY40is could only bind to the MdDFR promoter. Yeast two-hybrid screening and bimolecular fluorescence complementation showed that MdWRKY40is interacts with the CBF2 inhibitor MdMYB15L through the leucine zipper (LZ). When the LZ of MdWRMY40is was knocked out, MdWRKY40is overexpression in the callus did not affect MdCBF2 expression or callus cold tolerance, indicating that MdWRKY40is acts in the cold signaling pathway by interacting with MdMYB15L. In summary, MdWRKY40is can directly bind to the MdDFR promoter in order to promote anthocyanin accumulation, and it can also interact with MdMYB15L to interfere with its inhibitory effect on MdCBF2, indirectly promoting MdCBF2 expression, and thereby improving cold tolerance. These results provide a new perspective for the cold-resistance mechanism of apple rootstocks and a molecular basis for the screening of cold-resistant rootstocks.

The nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation based on the geometric phase is robust against the built-in noise and decoherence. In this work, we theoretically propose a scheme to realize nonadiabatic holonomic quantum gates in a surface electron system, which is a promising two-dimensional platform for quantum computation. The holonomic gate is realized by a three-level structure that combines the Rydberg states and spin states via an inhomogeneous magnetic field. After a cyclic evolution, the computation bases pick up different geometric phases and thus perform a holonomic gate. Only the electron with spin up experiences the holonomic gate, while the electron with spin down is decoupled from the state-selective driving fields. The arbitrary controlled-U gate encoded on the Rydberg states and spin states can then be realized. The fidelity of the output state exceeds 0.99 with experimentally achievable parameters.

A porous 3D cross-linked conductive network pierced by multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was successfully designed from zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). Zn@NPC@MWCNTs composites were tailored by the facile regulating the mass ratios and thermal annealing treatment. Due to the combination of less eddy current loss and dielectric loss together with multiple reflection attenuation caused by a unique structure. With a 10 wt% filler loading, the Zn@NPC@MWCNTs composites carbonized at 800 °C show two high reflection loss (RL) values with different thicknesses. An RL value is −53.18 dB with 4.09 mm thickness in the C-Band (4–8 GHz), and a minimum RL can reach −74.83 dB (10.8 GHz) with a matching thickness of 2.749 mm. The effective absorption bandwidth is 4 GHz (from 8 to 12 GHz, RL ≤ −10 dB), which just covers the full X-band. Low cost and easy preparation can also provide advantages to develop MOF-based materials as effective EMW absorbents.

Quantification of vitamin K1 in serum is still quite a challenge for most analytical laboratories. For long, protein precipitation (PP) coupled with liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) or solid phase extraction (SPE) is the only choice for sample preparation before LC-MS/MS analysis. The objective of this study is to establish a novel method for the simple and rapid quantification of K1. To this end, three issues are illuminated in the first place: (i) the release efficiency of K1 is influenced by the type of precipitator and the volume ratio of serum to precipitator during PP; (ii) the absolute recovery of K1 will be compromised by the partition effect during extraction; (iii) the volume of injected serum per run should be proper rather than high to prevent the potential ion suppression effect. Benefitting from these findings, a single-step PP method is developed for K1 quantification for the first time. For pretreatment, isopropanol (100 μL), instead of the frequently used methanol, ethanol and acetonitrile, is utilized to release K1 from serum (25 μL), which realize the excellent release efficiency (>90%) and dilution effect (1:4) simultaneously. After validation, the method can provide favorable accuracy (91.5–112.2%) and precision (less than13.5%) in the wide concentration range (0.1–2.5 ng/mL). As a result, such method may provide a feasible and high-throughput alternative for evaluating K1 status in practice.

BackgroundOwing to the emergence of drugs targeting human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), remarkable prognostic enhancement has been seen for patients with HER2-positive breast carcinoma. However, anti-HER2 medicines are applicable merely to individuals with HER2-positive tumors, and the benefit for those with low HER2 expression is unclear. The DESTINY-Breast04 phase III and RC48 clinical trial results showed the benefit of antibody-drug couples for low HER2-expressing individuals with breast carcinoma, challenging the traditional dichotomy between HER2-negative and -positive tumors. Hence, the purposes of the present work are to explore the clinicopathological traits and prognostic differences in the HER2-low expression Chinese population with early-stage breast carcinoma.MethodsData from the database of the Breast Center of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University were collected from January 2008 to December 2017. We screened a total of 4,598 patients, of which 2,837 had HER2-0 tumors and 1,761 had HER2-low tumors. Additionally, clinicopathological characteristics, survival, and prognostic information were obtained. Difference comparisons were made between HER2-0 and HER2-low groups regarding the clinical traits and outcomes.ResultsWe enrolled 4598 patients, with the HR-positive subjects suffering from HER2-low breast carcinoma higher in proportion than the HR-negative patients. In contrast to HER2-0 tumors, the HER2-low tumors were linked to an older median age at diagnosis, T1 tumors, N1 stage, a higher Ki-67 index, as well as inferior histological grade. Insignificant inter-group difference was noted regarding overall survival (OS), although the HER2–0 group exhibited better disease-free survival (DFS) than the HER2-low group for the entire (P = 0.003), lymph node-negative (P = 0.009) and HR-positive (P = 0.007) populations. According to the multivariate regression finding, low HER2 expression was an inferior DFS prognostic factor in the HER2-negative population with early-stage breast cancer (HR,1.33;95% CI, 1.06-1.66; P = 0.013).ConclusionThe clinical traits of the HER2-low carcinomas differed from those of HER2–0 tumors. Despite the insignificant inter-group difference in OS, the differences in DFS were found for the overall, lymph node-negative and HR-positive subjects, suggesting the possibility of HER2-low as an inferior prognostic factor for disease progression in early-stage breast cancer.

ObjectivesNational data on the admission rate, distribution, in-hospital mortality, and economic burden of traumatic fractures in China is unclear. We aimed to conduct a cross-sectional population-based study to determine such above data at the national level in China.MethodsA national administrative database was used to review all traumatic fracture hospitalizations in China during 2020, from which a total of 2,025,169 inpatients with traumatic fractures was retrieved. Admission rates and in-hospital mortality rates stratified by age, sex, and region were calculated. The causes of traumatic fracture and economic burden were described.ResultsThe admission rate of traumatic fractures of all China population in 2020 was 1.437‰. The admission rate increased with age and varied with genders and causes of injuries. Falls are the leading cause of traumatic fracture hospitalization, followed by road traffic injuries. The most common diagnoses were femoral neck fractures, with a number of 138,377. The in-hospital mortality was 1.209‰. Road traffic injuries led to the highest in-hospital mortality. The median length of stay was 10 days, with the median hospitalization cost of ¥20,900 (about $3,056).ConclusionTraumatic fractures are concerning conditions with a high admission rate and in-hospital mortality in China, which are mainly caused by falls and road traffic injuries. The government should implement more public health policies to enhance the health of the elderly and improve transportation safety to prevent traumatic fractures.

In the current study, an one pot quadruplex RT-qPCR assay was established and comprehensively evaluated. The assay's limit of detection could reach as low as 101 copies/reaction, with good repeatability profile and no cross-reaction with other respiratory pathogens. During clinical evaluation both by blinded samples and real clinical samples, the assay exhibited a 100% coincidence rate with individual commercial RT-qPCR assays. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the simultaneous subtyping influenza A virus into H1, H3, N1, and N2 by one pot quadruplex RT-qPCR assay, which could improve the preparedness for future influenza outbreaks.

Aroma is an important quality trait of grapes and often the focus of consumers, viticulturists and grapevine breeders. Kyoho is a hybrid between Vitis vinifera and Vitis labrusca with a strawberry-like scent, while 87-1 is an early-ripening mutant of Muscat hamburg, belonging to Vitis vinifera, with a rose scent. In this study, we compared their aroma compositions and concentrations during berry development by headspace-SPME combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and analyzed the expression differences of enzyme-encoding genes in the LOX-HPL, MEP and MVA metabolic pathways by qRT-PCR. Twelve esters were detected in Kyoho during the whole berry development and they were abundant after veraison, but no esters were detected in 87-1 berries. Linalool was the dominant terpene among the 14 terpenes detected in 87-1 berries, while limited amounts of terpenes were detected in Kyoho berries. qRT-PCR analysis indicated that the low expression of VvAAT might explain the low content of ester volatiles in 87-1 berries, and the low expression of coding genes in the MEP pathway, especially VvPNLinNer1, might be the reason for the low content of volatile terpenes in Kyoho berries. The results from this work will promote our understanding of aroma metabolic mechanisms of grapes, and offer some suggestions for grape aromatic quality improvement.

Abstract Background X‐ray repair cross‐complementary 5 (XRCC5) and 6 (XRCC6) are critical for DNA repair. Few studies have assessed their association with breast cancer risk, and related gene‐environment interactions remain poorly understood. This study aimed to determine the influence of XRCC5/6 polymorphisms on breast cancer risk, and their interactions with cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, and sleep satisfaction. Methods The study included 1039 patients with breast cancer and 1040 controls. Four single‐nucleotide polymorphisms of XRCC5 and two of XRCC6 were genotyped. Information about smoking, alcohol consumption, and sleep satisfaction was collected through questionnaires. Odds ratios (OR) and related 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were assessed using unconditional logistic regression models. Gene‐environment interactions were analyzed using logistic regression with multiplicative interaction models. Results XRCC5 rs16855458 was associated with increased breast cancer risk in the co‐dominant (ptrend = 0.003) and dominant (CA + AA vs. CC, OR = 1.29, 95% CI = 1.07–1.56, p = 0.008) genetic models after Bonferroni correction. The CG + GG genotype of XRCC6 rs2267437 was associated with an increased risk of estrogen receptor‐negative/progesterone receptor‐negative (ER−/PR−) breast cancer (CG + GG vs. CC: OR = 1.54, 95% CI = 1.12–2.13, p = 0.008) after Bonferroni correction. Moreover, an antagonistic interaction between XRCC5 rs16855458 and alcohol consumption (pinteraction = 0.017), and a synergistic interaction between XRCC6 rs2267437 and sleep satisfaction were associated with breast cancer risk (pinteraction = 0.0497). However, these interactions became insignificant after Bonferroni correction. Conclusion XRCC5 rs16855458 was associated with breast cancer risk, and XRCC6 rs2267437 was associated with the risk of ER−/PR− breast cancer. Breast cancer risk associated with XRCC5 and XRCC6 polymorphisms might vary according to alcohol consumption and sleep satisfaction, respectively, and merit further investigation.

Background: The past decade has witnessed a dramatic increase in the number of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in China. The nationwide burden of hospitalization remains unclear, however. We aimed to address this gap by conducting analysis using a nationwide database. Methods: Population-based hospitalization rates from 2013 to 2018 were calculated by extrapolating the number of patients in the database to the national level. Surgical rates, annual hospital charges, and length of stay were also used for quantification of hospitalization burden. The Poisson regression analysis and the Cochran–Armitage trend test were conducted to analyze temporal trends as expressed as annual percentage of change (APC) with 95% confidential intervals (CIs). Abstract. Background. After radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer, the most common complication is lower urinary tract symptoms. Post-operatively, bladder capacity can alter bladder function for a prolonged period. This study aimed to identify factors affecting bladder storage function. Methods. A multicenter, retrospective cohort study was conducted. Information of patients with stages IA2 to IIB cervical cancer with urodynamic study results were retrospectively collected from nine hospitals between June 2013 and June 2018 according to the inclusion criteria. Demographic, surgical, and oncological data were collected. The univariate and multivariate logistic regression was used to identify clinical factors associated with bladder storage function. Results. Two hundred and three patients with cervical cancer had urodynamic testing post-operatively. Ninety-five (46.8%) patients were diagnosed with stress urinary incontinence (SUI). The incidence of low bladder compliance (LBC) was 23.2%. Twenty-seven (13.3%) patients showed detrusor overactivity (DO). Fifty-seven patients (28.1%) presented with a decreased maximum cystometric capacity (DMCC). The probability of composite bladder storage dysfunction was 68.0%. Multivariate analysis confirmed that laparoscopy represents a protective factor for SUI with an odds ratio of 0.498 (P = 0.034). Objective To investigate the changes in the lumbar intervertebral foramen (LIVF) dimensions from neutral supine to direct anterior approach (DAA)‐specific hyperextension supine position through a standardized three‐dimensional (3D) reconstruction computerized tomography (CT) method. Methods A total of 35 healthy volunteers (18 men and 17 women) were included in this retrospective study. The mean age of enrolled subjects was 28.9 ± 5.0 years. In September 2018, all the individuals underwent a 3D CT scan of the lumbar spine in neutral and 30° hyperextension supine positions, which mimicked the patient’s position in DAA total hip arthroplasty (THA). The dimensions of the LIVF, including foraminal area, height, and width, were measured on 3D reconstructed CT models at all lumbar foraminal levels. Foraminal area was defined as the area bounded by the adjacent superior and inferior vertebral pedicles, the posterosuperior boundary of the inferior vertebral body, the surface of the intervertebral disc posteriorly, the posteroinferior boundary of the superior vertebral body, and the surface of the ligamentum flavum anteriorly. Foraminal height was defined as the longest distance between the border of the superior and the inferior pedicle. Foraminal width was defined as the shortest distance between the posteroinferior edge of the superior vertebrae and the opposing boundary. Subgroup analysis and multiple linear regression were used to evaluate the relationship between percentage changes of the LIVF dimensions and side, sex, and age. Results The LIVF dimensions varied significantly between the two positions at all levels (P 0.05). Multiple linear analysis showed that the percentage changes of LIVF dimensions were not related to side, sex, and age (P > 0.05). Conclusion The dimensions of the LIVF showed significant decrease at all levels in the DAA‐specific hyperextension supine position compared with the neutral supine position, and the percentage changes of LIVF dimensions were not influenced by side, sex, and age.

Objective To introduce a three‐point method combining the midpoint of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), the midsulcus of the tibial spines, and the midpoint of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) to determine appropriate tibial resection and component placing during TKA and to compare this method with Insall's 1/3 method. Methods A consecutive series of 128 knees that underwent TKA from January 2015 to August 2018 were analyzed. In one group (64 knees), the medial 1/3 of tibial tubercle (the Insall's traditional method) was used for tibial component alignment. In the other group (64 knees), the three‐point line connecting the midpoint of the PCL, the midpoint of the tibial spines, and the midpoint of the ACL was used for tibial component alignment. Both groups used the anterior tibial tendon as the distal reference for tibial resection. The coronal alignment error of the tibial component was determined by the angle between the line parallel to the tibial component platform and the tibial mechanical axis measured on postoperative radiograph. The axial rotation error of the femoral or tibial component was the intersection angle between the transepicondylar axis (TEA) and a line tangent to the posterior edge of the femoral or tibial component measured on CT. The coronal and axial alignment errors were compared between the two groups. Results The average coronal alignment error of the tibial component in the three‐point method group was 0.2° ± 1.4° versus − 0.9° ± 1.8°in the Insall's 1/3 method group (P

In order to know how regional averaged cloud top height (CTH) responded to the past climatic change, the spatial and temporal variations of CTH based on MODIS data (MOD03_08_v6.0) from March 2000 to February 2018 are analyzed. The results show that the CTH in East Asia was higher in the southwest and lower in the northeast. The annual mean CTH was found to increase in East Asia at the rate of 0.020 km per year, of which, 0.035 km per year over the eastern land and 0.034 km per year over the eastern sea. The CTH changes statistically correlated with the sea surface temperature changes over the eastern sea (r = 0.68), which indicates that the CTH changes may be affected by the underlying surface. Statistically significant increasing trend of annual mean CTH was found in the latitude zone of 30°–40°N. Furthermore, CTH showed decreasing trends of about −0.030 km per year in the Middle-Lower Yangtze River Basin, Tarim Basin, Turpan Basin and northeastern Sichuan Basin in summer since more low cloud formations benefited to the decrease of CTH. In winter, the decreasing trend of CTH was found over the north of 40°N, whereas the increasing trend was found over the south of 40°N in East Asia.

Abstract Background Patients with isolated methylmalonic acidemia (MMA) usually experience recurrent episodes of acute metabolic decompensation or metabolic stroke, require frequent hospitalization, and have a relatively high mortality rate. The aim of our study was to assess factors predicting the in-hospital death of pediatric patients with isolated MMA. We performed a retrospective study using data from the Hospital Quality Monitoring System, a national inpatient database in China collected from 2013 to 2017. All patients under 18 years old with a diagnosis of isolated MMA were included. Demographic, hospital-related, and clinical features were collected. Poisson regression was performed to identify potential influencing variables associated with in-hospital death. Results From 2013 to 2017, among 2317 admissions for pediatric patients diagnosed with isolated MMA, 1.77% had the outcome of death. In the univariate analysis, patients aged under 1 year had a higher risk of death than did those aged 1 year or older (odds ratio [OR] = 2.63, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.36–5.07). There was a higher risk of in-hospital death for patients admitted through emergency departments or via referrals than for those admitted through other routes (OR = 3.76, 95% CI: 1.84–7.67). Deaths were higher in hospitals with volumes of less than 50 patients with isolated MMA during the five study years (OR = 2.92, 95% CI: 1.46–5.83). Moreover, the risk of in-hospital death gradually decreased over time (OR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.57–0.90). In the multivariate analysis, the abovementioned associations with the risk of in-hospital death remained statistically significant. However, no significant associations were observed between specific clinical signs and in-hospital death in either the univariate or the multivariate analysis. Conclusions Younger age, admission to hospitals with low patient volumes, and admission through emergency departments or referrals are associated with higher risk of in-hospital death. The co-existence of specific clinical signs appears to have no effect on in-hospital death.

BackgroundNanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel (nab-paclitaxel) as neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) for breast cancer remains controversial. We conducted a retrospective study to compare the efficacy and safety of nab-paclitaxel with those of docetaxel as neoadjuvant regimens for HER2-negative breast cancer.MethodsIn this retrospective analysis, a total of 159 HER2-negative breast cancer patients who had undergone operation after NAC were consecutively analyzed from May 2016 to April 2018. Patients were classified into the nab-paclitaxel group (n = 79, nab-paclitaxel 260 mg/m2, epirubicin 75 mg/m2, and cyclophosphamide 500 mg/m2) and the docetaxel group (n = 80, docetaxel 75 mg/m2, epirubicin 75 mg/m2, and cyclophosphamide 500 mg/m2) according to the drug they received for neoadjuvant treatment. The efficacy and adverse events were evaluated in the two groups.ResultsThe pathological complete response (pCR)(ypT0/isN0) rate was significantly higher in the nab-paclitaxel group than in the docetaxel group (36.71% vs 20.00%; P = 0.031). The multivariate analysis revealed that therapeutic drugs, lymph node status, and tumor subtype were the most significant factor influencing treatment outcome. At a median follow-up of 47 months, disease-free survival (DFS) was not significantly different in those assigned to nab-paclitaxel compared with docetaxel (82.28% vs 76.25%; P = 0.331). The incidence of peripheral sensory neuropathy in the nab-paclitaxel group was higher than that in the docetaxel group (60.76% vs 36.25%; P = 0.008), while the incidence of arthralgia was observed more frequently in the docetaxel group (57.50% vs 39.97%; P = 0.047).ConclusionsCompared with docetaxel, nab-paclitaxel achieved a higher pCR rate, especially those patients with triple-negative breast cancer or lymph node negative breast cancer. However, there was no significant difference in DFS between the two groups. This study provides a valuable reference for the management of patients with HER2-negative breast cancer.

Background: To address the worldwide dramatically increased Cesarean section (CS) rate in the past decades, WHO has recommended the CS rate should not be higher than 10–15%. Whether it is achievable remains unknown.Methods: We collected the data of delivery from 2008 to 2017 in two typical regional hospitals in China: Longhua Hospital (national policies rigorously implemented) and Dongguan Hospital (national policies not rigorously implemented). We compared between the two hospitals the 10 years trend in annual rate of CS, standardized by age, education level, parity, and CS history, against the time of issuing relevant national, local, and hospital policies.Results: In 10 years, 42,441 women in Longhua and 36,935 women in Dongguan have given birth. China's first national policy on CS reduction was issued in 2010 and the formal relaxation of one-child policy was issued in 2015–2016. In Longhua, the standardized annual CS rate was around 35% in 2008–2009, which declined sharply since 2010 down to 13.1% in 2016 (p < 0.001) and then leveled off. In contrast, in Dongguan, the rate stayed around 25% at the beginning, increased to 36% in 2011, decreased sharply to 27% in 2012, and leveled off until 2015 (p < 0.001), and then bounced back to 35% in 2017. The proportion of women with the history of CS increased significantly in the two hospitals (both roughly from 6% before 2010 to 20% after 2015). Analyses stratified by modified Robson classification showed that CS rates reduced in all risk classes of delivery women in Longhua but only in the Robson class 2 group in Dongguan. Major complications did not differ by hospital.Conclusion: With vigorously implementing national policies at micro levels, the WHO-recommended CS rate could be achieved without increase in major complications.

Introduction: Post-radical-hysterectomy (RH) patients suffer from a series of problems resulting from neurovascular injury, such as bladder dysfunction, which reduce their quality of life. We have designed this study to evaluate the efficacy of transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TENS) on patient rehabilitation after RH for early cervical cancer.Materials and methods: A total of 97 patients were enrolled in a randomized-controlled trial (from January 2015 to December 2019) involving 7 medical centers nationwide. Patients were assigned to either the intervention group (n = 46), or the control group (n = 51). TENS was given to patients in the intervention group from the 7th day after surgery for a total of 14–21 days. The control group received no TENS. Primary outcomes were measured for residual urine volume and recovery of urination function. Secondary outcomes were measures for urodynamics (UDS), pelvic floor electromyography function examination (PFEmF), and quality of life (QoL).Results: Residual urine volume and improvement in the rate of urination were found to show no significant differences on the 14th, 21st, and 28th days after surgery. The maximum flow rate (Qmax) in the intervention group was significantly higher than that in the control group on the 28th day, but there were no significant differences in average flow rate, voiding time, time to Qmax, muscle fiber strength, muscle fiber fatigue, and the abnormal rate of A3 reflection on the 28th day and the 3rd mo., as well as in the QoL at 3rd mo., 6th mo., and 12th mo. after surgery.Conclusion: Our study showed no sufficient evidence to prove that TENS under the trialed parameters could improve the subject's voiding function, PFEmF, and QOL after RH. Abstract The current criteria for defining the recurrence risks of stage II colorectal cancer (CRC) are not robust; therefore, we aimed to explore novel gene signatures to predict recurrence risks and to reveal the underlying mechanisms of stage II CRC. First, the gene expression profiles of 124 patients with stage II CRC from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database were obtained to screen differentially expressed genes (DEGs). A total of 202 DEGs, including 128 upregulated and 74 downregulated, were identified in the recurrence group (n = 24) compared to the nonrecurrence group (n = 100). Furthermore, the top 5 DEGs (ZNF561, WFS1, SLC2A1, MFI2, and PTGR1) were identified by random forest variable hunting, and four (ZNF561, WFS1, SLC2A1, and PTGR1) were selected to create a four‐gene recurrent model (GRM), with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.882 according to the receiver operating characteristic curve, and the robust diagnostic effectiveness of the GRM was further validated with another gene expression profiling dataset (GSE12032), with an AUC of 0.943. The diagnostic effectiveness of the GRM regarding recurrence was associated with poor disease‐free survival in all stages of CRC. In addition, gene ontology functional annotation and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analyses revealed 18 enriched functions and 6 enriched pathways. Four genes, ABCG2, CACNA1F, CYP19A1, and TF, were identified as hub genes by the protein‐protein interaction network, which further validated that these genes were correlated with a poor pathologic stage and overall survival in all stages of CRC. In conclusion, the GRM can effectively classify stage II CRC into groups of high and low risks of recurrence, thereby making up for the prognostic value of the traditional clinicopathological risk factors defined by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines. The hub genes may be useful therapeutic targets for recurrence. Thus, the GRM and hub genes could offer clinical value in directing individualized and precision therapeutic regimens for stage II CRC patients.

Abstract Background Methylmalonic acidemia (MMA) and propionic acidemia (PA) are two kinds of diseases caused by inborn errors of metabolism. So far, the epidemiological data on them are limited in China. The aim of our study is to investigate the proportion and characteristics of hospitalized pediatric patients with MMA and PA in China. Methods The data in this study were obtained from the Hospital Quality Monitoring System, a national inpatient database in China, with information on the patients hospitalized during the period from 2013 to 2017. We identified the data related to the patients who were under 18 years old and were diagnosed with MMA/PA, and extracted the information on demographic characteristics, hospital location, total cost and other related clinical presentations from the data. Results Among all hospitalized pediatric patients with liver diseases, there were increasing trends in the proportion of individuals diagnosed with MMA or PA during the period from 2013 (0.76% for MMA; 0.13% for PA) to 2017 (1.61% for MMA; 0.32% for PA). For both MMA and PA, children under 2-year-old accounted for the highest proportion. The median of total cost per hospitalization was relatively high (RMB 7388.53 for MMA; RMB 4999.66 for PA). Moreover, most patients hospitalized in tertiary class A hospitals (MMA: 80.96%, PA: 76.21%); and a majority of pediatric patients admitted in the hospitals in Shanghai and Beijing are from outside districts. Manifestations of nervous system-related symptoms, and metabolic acidosis or anemia in laboratory findings were more common during hospitalization. Conclusions The study is the first nationwide one in providing epidemiological and clinical information on hospitalized pediatric patients with MMA/PA. An increasing hospitalization with various presentations and a heavy financial burden were observed. In addition, geographically, the medical resources in China have been unevenly distributed.

Shiraiaceae is an important family in Pleosporales (Dothideomycetes), which includes medical fungi and plant pathogens. Two hypocrellin-producing taxa, Shiraia bambusicola and a novel genus Rubroshiraia gen. nov., typified by Rubroshiraia bambusae are treated in this article. Maximum likelihood analysis, generated via RAxML (GTR+G model), using a combined SSU, LSU, TEF1 and RPB2 sequence dataset, shows that Rubroshiraia is close to Shiraia and belongs to the family Shiraiaceae. Descriptions, illustrations and a taxonomic key are provided for the genera in Shiraiaceae. Rubroshiraia morphologically differs from Shiraia in having small and dark ascostromata and filiform ascospores. Production of the ascostromatal metabolites, hypocrellin A and B, were examined by HPLC and spectrophotometer. The content of hypocrellin A and B of specimen HKAS 102255 (R. bambusae) is twice that produced by HKAS 102253 (S. bambusicola). To clarify the relationship between R. bambusae and Hypocrella bambusae, type material of the latter was examined and provided the illustration.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the clinical molecular characteristics in patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative breast cancer and axillary lymph node metastasis and explored the related factors of the neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) response. Methods: The data of 185 patients with HER2-negative breast cancer and axillary lymph node metastasis who were treated in the Department of Breast Center of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University from July 2017 to July 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. The clinical features and the related factors for the responses of the primary tumor and axillary lymph node metastasis to NAC were analyzed. Statistical analysis was conducted using the SPSS 26.0 statistical software. Univariate analysis was conducted using the χ2 test, and multivariate analysis was conducted using logistic regression analysis. Results: The differences in estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and Ki67 among the three HER2-negative subgroups (the immunohistochemistry (IHC)0 group, IHC1+ group, and IHC2+/in situ hybridization– group) were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Univariate analysis revealed that the differences in the tumor stage, ER, PR, and Ki67 among the groups based on the response of the primary tumor to NAC were statistically significant (p < 0.05), and the differences in ER, PR, and Ki67 among the groups based on the response of axillary lymph node metastasis to NAC were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Multivariate analysis revealed that the difference in Ki67 among the groups based on the response of axillary lymph node metastasis to NAC was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusions: When the expression level of HER2-negative IHC increases, the positive rates of ER and PR increase. A smaller tumor, negative ER, negative PR, and a Ki67 level >30% indicate a good effect of NAC for primary tumors. Negative ER, negative PR, and a Ki67 level >30% indicate a good effect of NAC for axillary lymph node metastasis. Therefore, Ki67 may be an independent factor affecting the efficacy of NAC for axillary lymph node metastasis.

Objective This study was performed to explore the association of the high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) score with ventilator weaning and 28-day mortality of patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Method In total, 197 patients treated for ARDS from October 2004 to December 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. Univariate analysis and multifactor regression analysis were used to determine the relationship of the HRCT score with ventilator weaning and 28-day mortality. Curve-fitting analysis and threshold analysis were further used to explore the association of the HRCT score with ventilator weaning and 28-day mortality. Results The multifactor regression analysis showed that the HRCT score was significantly associated with a lower rate of ventilator weaning and a higher risk of 28-day mortality in patients with ARDS. HRCT scores of 257.0 and 243.2 were the thresholds for ventilator weaning and 28-day mortality, respectively. When the HRCT score was below the threshold, every 1-point increase in the HRCT score was associated with a 4.6% decrease in the ventilator weaning rate and a 4.6% increase in the 28-day mortality rate. Conclusion The HRCT score was associated with ventilator weaning and 28-day mortality with a threshold of 257.0 and 243.2 points, respectively.

This study investigated the influence of red, green, blue, and white paper bags on the free volatile compound development of Kyoho grape berries from green to harvest. Seven functional groups of volatiles were identified during the development of Kyoho grape berries including esters, aldehydes, alcohols, terpenes, ketones, acids, and hydrocarbons. Esters and aldehydes were abundant in Kyoho grape berries, mainly represented by ethyl acetate, ethyl butyrate, and (E)-2-hexenal. They accumulated quickly after veraison and slightly decreased toward maturation. Red, green, blue, and white paper bags promoted the accumulation of esters and inhibited the accumulation of aldehydes, also inhibited the accumulation of alcohols, tepenes, ketones, and acids. Their effect from strong to weak was green, blue, red, and white paper bags. The expression profiles of genes in the lipoxygenase-hydroperoxide lyase (LOX-HPL) pathway were also analyzed and the results indicated that the regulation of red, green, blue, and white paper bags on aldehydes, alcohols, and esters volatile aromas was at transcriptional level. The results expanded our comprehension in grape aroma biosynthesis and berry bagging technique in table grape cultivation.

Abstract Background Plaque composition and morphologic characteristics identified by virtual histology intravascular ultrasound (VH-IVUS) can determine plaques at increased risk of clinical events following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) among coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. However, there have been few studies to investigate the relationship between plaque composition of saphenous vein graft (SVG) by VH-IVUS and clinical outcomes in patients with saphenous vein graft disease (SVGD) undergoing PCI. The purpose of this study is to determine whether plaque components and characteristics by VH-IVUS can predict major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) among SVGD patients undergoing PCI. Methods/design This is a prospective cohort study conducted in Tianjin Chest Hospital, China. Participants with SVGD referred for PCI will be invited to participate in this study, and will be followed up at 1, 6, 12, 24 and 36 months post-PCI to assess clinical outcomes. The planned sample size is 175 subjects. We will recruit subjects with SVGD scheduled to receive PCI, aged 18–80 years, with a history of previous coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery more than 1 year ago, and willing to participate in the study and sign informed consent. The composite primary study endpoint is the incidence of MACEs after PCI for SVGD, including death from cardiac causes, non-fatal myocardial infarction, unplanned target lesion revascularization (TLR) and target vessel revascularization (TVR). The primary outcome analysis will be presented as Kaplan-Meier estimates and the primary outcome analysis will be carried out using a Cox proportional hazards regression model. Discussion Once the predictive values of plaque components and characteristics by VH-IVUS on subsequent clinical outcomes are determined among SVGD patients undergoing PCI, an innovative prediction tool of clinical outcomes for SVGD patients undergoing PCI will be created, which may lead to the development of new methods of risk stratification and intervention guidance. Background/Aims: Chronic compression of the spinal cord causes the loss of motor neurons in the anterior horn, but the precise and extensive mechanism for the loss is not completely determined. Therefore, this study aims to explore the role of microRNA-494 (miR-494) in the proliferation of astrocytes and in the synaptic remodeling in the spinal cord of a rat model of chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) by regulating the Nogo/NgR signaling pathway. Methods: A rat model of chronic, compressive SCI was established, and the spinal cord state, blood supply changes, and astrocyte apoptosis were observed. Reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and Western blotting were used to detect expression of miR-494 and the Nogo/NgR signaling pathway-related genes. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was used for detecting miR-494 expression and distribution. Results: Higher miR-494 expression was accompanied by the inhibition of astrocyte proliferation and synaptic remodeling. In addition, CDK6 could be regulated by miR-494 and was shown to be one of the target genes of miR-494. Positive expression of miR-494 detected by FISH was consistent with the results from RT-qPCR that miR-494 could downregulate CDK6 gene expression. Moreover, the direct miR-494 target CDK6 plays important inhibitory roles in chronic SCI by suppressing the Nogo/ NgR signaling pathway. Conclusions: The results demonstrated that miR-494 inhibition can promote astrocyte proliferation and synaptic remodeling by suppressing the Nogo/NgR signaling pathway in a rat model of chronic SCI.

Abstract Depleted uranium (DU) has been widely applied in industrial and military activities, and is often obtained from producing fuel for nuclear reactors. DU may be released into the environment, polluting air, soil, and water, and is considered to exert both radiological and chemical toxicity. In humans and animals, DU can induce multiple health effects, such as renal tubular necrosis and bone malignancies. This review summarizes the known information on DU’s routes of entry, mechanisms of toxicity, and health effects. In addition, we survey the chelating agents used in ameliorating DU toxicity.

Abstract Background The goal of polio eradication is to complete elimination and containment of all wild, vaccine-related and Sabin polioviruses. Vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV) surveillance in China from 2001–2013 is summarized in this report, which has important implications for the global polio eradication initiative. Methods Acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) cases and their contacts with VDPVs isolated from fecal specimens were identified in our AFP surveillance system or by field investigation. Epidemiological and laboratory information for these children were analyzed and the reasons for the VDPV outbreak was explored. Results VDPVs were isolated from a total of 49 children in more than two-thirds of Chinese provinces from 2001–2013, including 15 VDPV cases, 15 non-polio AFP cases and 19 contacts of AFP cases or healthy subjects. A total of 3 circulating VDPVs (cVDPVs) outbreaks were reported in China, resulting in 6 cVDPVs cases who had not been vaccinated with oral attenuated poliomyelitis vaccine. Among the 4 immunodeficiency-associated VDPVs (iVDPVs) cases, the longest duration of virus excretion was about 20 months. In addition, one imported VDPV case from Myanmar was detected in Yunnan Province. Conclusions Until all wild, vaccine-related and Sabin polioviruses are eradicated in the world, high quality routine immunization and sensitive AFP surveillance should be maintained, focusing efforts on underserved populations in high risk areas.

Background/Aims: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive breast cancer subtype. Our study investigated the functional role of miR-212-5p in TNBC. Methods: Realtime PCR was used to quantify miR-212-5p expression levels in 30 paired TNBC samples and adjacent normal tissues. Wound healing and Transwell assays were used to evaluate the effects of miR-212-5p expression on the invasiveness of TNBC cells. Luciferase reporter and Western blot assays were used to verify whether the mRNA encoding Prrx2 is a major target of miR-212-5p. Results: MiR-212-5p was downregulated in TNBC, and its expression levels were related to tumor size, lymph node status and vascular invasion in breast cancer. We also observed that the miR-212-5p expression level was significantly correlated with a better prognosis in TNBC. Ectopic expression of miR-212-5p induced upregulation of E-cadherin expression and downregulation of vimentin expression. The expression of miR212-5p also suppressed the migration and invasion capacity of mesenchymal-like cancer cells accompanied by a morphological shift towards the epithelial phenotype. Moreover, our study observed that miR-212-5p overexpression significantly suppressed Prrx2 by targeting its 3’-untranslated region (3’-UTR) region, and Prrx2 overexpression partially abrogated miR-212-5p-mediated suppression. Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that miR-212-5p inhibits TNBC from acquiring the EMT phenotype by downregulating Prrx2, thereby inhibiting cell migration and invasion during cancer progression.

Background/Aims: Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is recognized as a crucial mechanism in breast cancer progression and metastasis. Paired-related homeobox 2 (Prrx2) has been identified as a new EMT inducer in cancer, but the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. Methods: The expression of Prrx2 was assessed by immunohistochemistry in breast cancer tissues to evaluate the clinicopathological significance of Prrx2, as well as the correlation between Prrx2 and EMT. Short hairpin RNA knockdown of Prrx2 was used to examine cellular effects of Prrx2, detecte the expression of Wnt/β-catenin signaling and EMT-associated proteins, and observe cell proliferation, invasion and migration abilities in vitro and in vivo. Results: Clinical association studies showed that Prrx2 expression was related to tumor size, lymph node metastasis, tumor node metastasis stages, EMT and poor survival. Results also showed that knockdown of Prrx2 could alter cell morphology, suppressed the abilities of cell proliferation, invasion and migration in breast cancer. Moreover, silencing of Prrx2 induced the mesenchymal-epithelial transition and prevented nuclear translocation of β-catenin, inhibited wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. Conclusion: Our study indicated that Prrx2 may be an important activator of EMT in human breast cancer and it can serve as a molecular target of therapeutic interventions for breast cancer.

Abstract Background Class III radical hysterectomy (RH III)_plus pelvic lymphadenectomy is the standard surgery for early stage cervical cancer (CC) patients, the 5 year survival rate is about 90%, but pelvic floor disorders especially bladder dysfunction are common due to damaged vessels and nerve fibers following surgery. Transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TENS) treatment has been used to treat bladder disorders for many years, but its effect on cervical cancer patients, the best treatment time point and stimulated protocol, had never been assessed. The aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy of TENS treatment on lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) after RH III in CC patients. Methods/Design The study will be conducted as a clinical, multicentre, randomised controlled trial with balanced randomisation (1:1). The planned sample size is 208 participants (at 1:1 ratio, 104 subjects in each group). At 5–7 days after RH III, patients are screened according to operative and pathological findings. Enrolled participants are randomised into an intervention group (TENS plus conventional clinical care) or control group (conventional clinical care), with stratification by menopausal status (menopause vs. non-menopause) and surgical modality (laparoscopic RH or abdominal RH). Participants in both groups will be followed up at 14 days, 21 days, 28 days, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months and 24 months after surgery. The primary endpoint is improvement rate of urination function which is defined as recovery (residual urine ≤50 ml) or improvement (residual urine 50–100 ml). Secondary endpoints include urodynamic parameter, urinary incontinence, anorectal function, pelvic function, quality of life (QOL), disease-free survival and adverse events. Primary endpoint analyses will be carried out by Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel tests taking into center effect. Discussion To our knowledge this is the first trial to investigate the effect of TENS treatment on bladder function recovery after RH III among CC patients. This study will provide new information on TENS efficacy for bladder function recovery. Once confirmed, it may help to provide a new, non-invisive treatment for those postoperative CC patients with poor pelvic function, which would help improve their quality of life. The highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) Duke, was used to construct a de novo transcriptome sequence library and to perform data statistical analysis. Mega 4, CLC Sequence Viewer 6 software, and quantitative PCR were employed for bioinformatics and expression analyses of the basic helix-loop-helix (BHLH) transcription factors of the sequencing library. The results showed that 28.38 gigabytes of valid data were obtained from transcriptome sequencing and were assembled into 108 033 unigenes. Functional annotation showed that 32 244 unigenes were annotated into Clusters of Orthologous Groups (COG) and Gene Ontology (GO) databases, whereas the rest of the 75 789 unigenes had no matching information. By using COG and GO classification tools, sequences with annotation information were divided into 25 and 52 categories, respectively, which involved transport and metabolism, transcriptional regulation, and signal transduction. Analysis of the transcriptome library identified a total of 59 BHLH genes. Sequence analysis revealed that 55 genes of that contained a complete BHLH domain. Furthermore, phylogenetic analysis showed that BHLH genes of blueberry (Duke) could be divided into 13 sub-groups. PCR results showed that 45 genes were expressed at various developmental stages of buds, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits, suggesting that the function of BHLH was associated with the development of different tissues and organs of blueberry, Duke. The present study would provided a foundation for further investigations on the classification and functions of the blueberry BHLH family.

Background. Salmonella and Shigella are often associated with fecal-oral transmission and cause large-scale outbreaks in centralized catering units and, therefore, should be frequently and strictly monitored, especially among food handlers. However, no specific and sensitive on-site detection method is available until now. Methods. In this study, an insulated isothermal PCR assay for the detection of Salmonella and Shigella on a field-deployable PCR system was developed. Specificity, sensitivity, reproducibility, and clinical accuracy of the assay were characterized and evaluated. Results. The insulated isothermal PCR assay could be completed within 58 minutes with minimal pretreatment needed. The assay was specific and with good reproducibility. The limit of detection was 103 CFU/mL and 101 CFU/mL for Salmonella and Shigella, respectively, which was comparable to multiplex real-time PCR. Mock on-site clinical evaluation results showed that the analytical sensitivity and specificity of the insulated isothermal PCR assay were 100% and 96.6%, while the positive predictive value and negative predictive value were 94.1% and 100%, respectively. Conclusion. Based on our results, we believe that the assay developed herein could serve as an alternative method for preliminary screening and provide a valuable platform for the on-site detection of Salmonella and Shigella, especially in resource-limited and developing countries.

ω-Secalin was an important factor influencing processing quality of wheat 1BL/1RS translocations. On the basis of four ω-secalin gene sequences cloned from Lankao 906 (a wheat cultivar with 1BL/1RS translocation) with putative transcription activity, a pair of primers with suitable restriction endonucleases added at their 5′ ends were designed to amplify the mature protein-coding regions of the four genes. After digestion with restriction endonucleases, the amplified products were ligated into the prokaryotic expression vector pET30a(+). The prokaryotically expressed recombinant proteins and gliadin isolated from the Lankao 906 seed were analyzed on the same acid polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. All four prokaryotically expressed secalin bands had corresponding seed-expressed gliadin bands. The four corresponding gliadin bands were confirmed to be the expression products of the four ω-secalin genes by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). This conclusion was further confirmed because the four ω-secalin bands could be detected in all 14 wheat 1BL/1RS translocation cultivars used in the study, although there was some interference for the detection of one ω-secalin band from nearby wheat gliadin bands. The sequence information of ω-secalin genes with expression activity will be helpful for improving the processing quality of wheat with 1BL/1RS translocations by using RNA interference method to silence the expression of the ω-secalin genes.

AIM: To investigate the clinical efficacy and benefit of short-pulse pattern scan laser(PASCAL)photocoagulation for proliferative diabetic retinopathy(PDR).METHODS:Twenty-eight PDR patients(42 eyes)underwent short-pulse PASCAL pan-retinal photocoagulation(PRP)were analyzed.The best corrected visual acuity was ≥0.1 in 36 eyes, RESULTS: All the cases had no pain during the short-pulse PASCAL treatment.One year after treatments,the final visual acuity was improved in 6 eyes,kept stable in 28 eyes and decreased in 8 eyes; neovascularization were regressed in 18 eyes(43%), stable in 12 eyes(29%), uncontrolled in 12 eyes(29%). Five eyes(12%)received vitrectomy due to vitreous hemorrhage.Compared with before operation, retina thickness in central fovea of macula and visual field had no obvious change after one-time PASCAL PRP(P>0.05). CONCLUSION:The one-time short-pulse PASCAL PRP could stabilize the progress of PDR safely, effectively and simply.

Based on Mie scattering and Monte Carlo ray tracing method, the transmission process of light in the remote phosphor film is described and the optical model of red and green laminated phosphor films is constructed. The photochromic properties of the phosphor films were studied by TM-30-15 method proposed by the North American Lighting Association. The investigation discloses that the normalized cross correlation of single-layer phosphor film spectral power distribution between the simulation and experimental results is about 99%, and the deviation of color coordinates is within 0.01. Based on the monochrome phosphor optical model, we establish bicolor optical model of red and green laminated phosphor film layers to form white light and can predict its color performance. The experimental results show that the normalized cross correlation of laminated phosphor film spectral power distribution between the simulation and experiment is about 97%, and the optical model of red and green laminated phosphor film can accurately predict the index Rf and Rg. When the red and green phosphor mass ratio is 0.05:0.5, the simulated color is optimal, Rf reaches 90, and Rg reaches 100, whose corresponding experimental values are Rf=90, Rg=101.

No rude approximations were made in the course of deducing formula for B(χ, Eg) as a function of parameters of secondary electron emission SEE; where B(χ, Eg) is the probability that an internal secondary electron escapes into vacuum upon reaching the surface of semiconductors and insulators SI with width of forbidden band Eg and original electron affinity χ. It can be concluded that the formula for B(χ, Eg) as a function of parameters of SEE can be used to calculate B(χ, Eg). The B(χ, Eg) calculated with the formula for B(χ, Eg) as a function of parameters of SEE and characteristics of B(χ, Eg) and SEE from SI were studied, the formula for B(χ, Eg) of SI with Eg≥0.6 eV and χ≥0.5 eV as a function of χ and Eg was determined. It concludes that the determined formula can be used to calculate B(χ, Eg) of SI with Eg≥0.6 eV and χ≥0.5 eV. The processes and characteristics of SEE from SI, energy loss of primary electron and parameters of SEE were studied, the formulae for δm(Epom, χreal, Eg) in the general case and 1/α(χreal, Eg) of SI with Eg≥0.6 eV and χ≥0.5 eV were deduced and experimentally proved, respectively; where δm(Epom, χreal, Eg) is the maximum secondary electron yield δm of SI with Eg and χreal, Epom is primary incident energy corresponding to δm, χreal is real electron affinity,1/α(χreal, Eg) is mean escape depth of secondary electrons emitted from SI with Eg and χreal.

A series of Ce ^3+ /Tb ^3+ singly doped and Ce ^3+ , Tb ^3+ co-doped Ca _3 GdNa(PO _4 ) _3 F phosphors were synthesized via high temperature solid-state reaction in a reductive atmosphere. The crystal, luminescence properties, energy transfer mechanism and thermal stability of the samples were investigated in detail. The Ce ^3+ doped phosphors can be excited in the range from 250 to 330 nm. The Ce ^3+ ,Tb ^3+ co-doped phosphors exhibit characteristic emission of Ce ^3+ and Tb ^3+ simultaneously under the excitation of 301 nm. In addition, the energy transfer efficiency from Ce ^3+ to Tb ^3+ reaches as high as 78.6% when the doping amount of Tb ^3+ is 0.20. The mechanism of energy transfer between Ce ^3+ and Tb ^3+ ions is demonstrated to be a dipole−dipole interaction. The luminescence characteristics show that this phosphor can be a platform for modeling a new phosphor and application in the solid-state lighting field.

AIM: To investigate the surgical therapeutic effects and complications of 23-gauge(23-G)vitrectomy combined with phacoemulcification for early proliferative diabetic retinopathy(PDR)and vitreous hemorrhage. METHODS: The 23-G micro-invasive vitrectomy combined with phacoemulcification and intraocular lens implantation were done in 48 patients(48 eyes)from Jan. 2011 to Jan. 2013. Best corrected visual acuity was recorded before or after operation 1mo. All patients were followed up for 4-18mo to observe the eye pressure, inflammatory reaction, intraocular lens location, and the changes of fundus conditions. RESULTS: After 1mo operation, best corrected visual acuity improved 43 eyes(90%), the visual acuity of 36 eyes(75%)≥0.12, 15 eyes(31%)≥0.3, visual acuity in preoperation or postoperation was different significantly(P=0.00). There were 6 eyes(13%)with hypotony, 5 eyes(10%)with choroidal detachment, 13 eyes(27%)with inflammation in anterior chamber, 16 eyes(33%)with increased intraocular pressure, and 10 eyes(21%)with vitreous hemorrhage after operation. However, there were no vitreous retinal hyperplastic lesions, retinal detachment, iris rubeosis, and neovascular glaucoma postoperatively. CONCLUSION: The 23-G micro-invasive vitrectomy combined with phacoemulcification and for early proliferative diabetic retinopathy is safe and effective.
