Background To study the effect of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) and angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) on the outcome of hospitalization in patients with hypertension and novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods A retrospective analysis was performed in 202 COVID-19 patients who were hospitalized in Thunder-God Hospital, Wuhan from 12 February 2020 to 30 March 2020. According to whether taking ACEI or ARB, 67 (33.0%) patients with hypertension were divided into 3 groups: A, patients received ACEI or ARB after admission (n = 22); B, patients received ACEI or ARB before admission but interrupted after admission (n = 24); and C, patients were not treated with ACEI or ARB before or after admission (n = 21). Changes of therapeutic indicators in all groups of patients and their application relationship with ACEI/ARB were compared and analyzed. Results There were no significant differences in age, gender, blood pressure, underlying disease severity, or serum biochemical indicators (ALT, LDH, creatinine, and creatine kinase levels) at admission among 3 groups (all P > 0.05). During hospitalization, there were no significant differences in COVID-19-related treatment, oxygen use, hospital mortality, recovery and discharge rate, or days of throat swab nucleic acid turning negative among 3 groups (all P > 0.05). The proportion of calcium channel blocker in groups B and C was higher than group A (95.8% and 85.7% vs. 40.9%, P < 0.01), but there was no significant difference in blood pressure or compliance rates at discharge (P > 0.05). Group A, B, and C patients were hospitalized for 27.4 ± 6.4, 30.0 ± 8.8, and 30.1 ± 9.3 days, respectively (all P > 0.05). Compared with admission values, there were no significant differences in serum ALT, LDH, creatinine, or creatine kinase levels among all 3 groups during hospitalization (all P > 0.05). Conclusions ACEI or ARB has no significant effect on the outcome of hospitalization in patients with hypertension and COVID-19.

Background This study aims to investigate the effects of recombinant human brain natriuretic peptide (rhBNP) on serum enzyme data, cardiac function parameters and cardiovascular events in patients with acute anterior myocardial infarction (MI). Methods A total of 421 patients with acute anterior or extensive anterior MI were collected from 20 hospitals. These patients were randomly divided into two groups: rhBNP and control groups. Both groups of patients received primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) within the effective time window. In the rhBNP group, rhBNP administration (0.01 µg/kg/min, 48-72 successive hours) was performed as early as possible after hospital admission. Prior to and one or seven days after PCI, serum concentrations of cardiac troponin (cTnT), creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB) and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) were measured. At seven days and 6 months after PCI, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDd) and stroke volume (SV) were measured using 2D Doppler echocardiography. MACEs that occurred during hospitalization and within 6 months after PCI were recorded. Results At postoperative days one and seven, serum concentrations of cTnT were significantly lower in the rhBNP group than in the control group. At postoperative day one, serum concentrations of CK-MB were significantly lower in the rhBNP group than in the control group. At postoperative day seven, serum concentrations of NT-proBNP were significantly lower in the rhBNP group than in the control group, and LVEF was significantly greater in the rhBNP group than in the control group. At postoperative 6 months, LVEDd was significantly lower in the rhBNP group compared with the control group. In addition, SV and LVEF were significantly greater in the rhBNP group than in the control group. By postoperative month 6, the incidence of composite cardiovascular events (16.0% vs. 26.0%, P=0.012), cardiac death (7.0% vs.13.5%, P=0.030), and particularly cardiac death + re-hospitalization for congestive heart failure (13.1% vs. 25.5%, P=0.001) were significantly lower in the rhBNP group than in the control group. Conclusions Early intravenous rhBNP administration after PCI significantly lowered the serum concentrations of cTnT and NT-proBNP, increased LVEDd, SV and LVEF, and reduced MACEs, including cardiac death, in patients with acute anterior MI undergoing PCI.

Objective: Patients with cirrhosis often exhibit cognitive deficits, particularly executive dysfunction, which is considered a predictor of overt hepatic encephalopathy (OHE). We examined brain intrinsic networks associated with executive function to investigate the neural basis of this cognitive deficiency in cirrhosis. Methods: Resting-state functional MRI data were acquired from 20 cirrhotic patients and 18 healthy controls. Seed-based correlation analysis was used to identify the 3 well-known networks associated with executive function, including executive control (ECN), default mode (DMN), and salience (SN) networks. Functional connectivity (FC) within each network was compared between groups and correlated with patient executive performance (assessed by the Stroop task). Results: Patients showed decreased FC between the ECN seed (right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex) and several regions (including right middle/inferior frontal gyrus, left inferior frontal gyrus, bilateral inferior/superior parietal lobules, bilateral middle/inferior temporal gyrus, and right medial frontal gyrus), between the DMN seed (posterior cingulate cortex) and several regions (including bilateral medial frontal gyrus, bilateral anterior cingulate cortex, bilateral superior frontal gyrus, bilateral precuneus/posterior cingulate cortex, left supramarginal gyrus, and left middle temporal gyrus), and between the SN seed (right anterior insula) and right supramarginal gyrus. FC strength in the ECN and SN was negatively correlated with patient performance during the Stroop task. Conclusions: Disrupted functional integration in the core brain cognitive networks, which is reflected by reductions in FC, occurs before OHE bouts, and plays an important role in the neural mechanism of executive dysfunction associated with cirrhosis.

Objective To investigate changes in the functional connectivity (FC) pattern in the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with mild cognitive impairment and dementia by employing resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI). Methods Twenty-seven PD patients with different cognitive status and 9 healthy control subjects (control group) were enrolled for RS-fMRI. The RS-fMRI data were analyzed with DPARSF and REST software. Regions with changed functional connectivity were determined by the seed-based voxelwise method and compared between groups. Correlation between the intensity of FC and the MoCA scores of PD group was analyzed. Results Parametric maps showed statistical increases in PCC functional connectivity in PD-MCI patients and decreases in PCC connectivity in PDD patients. The latter group of patients also showed evidence for increased connectivity between prefrontal cortices and posterior cerebellum. A significant positive correlation was found between the MoCA scores and the strength of PCC connectivity in the angular gyrus and posterior cerebellum and a negative correlation between MoCA scores and PCC connectivity in all other brain regions. Conclusion When patients transition from PD-NCI to PD-MCI, there appears to be an increase in functional connectivity in the PCC, suggesting an expansion of the cortical network. Another new network (a compensatory prefrontal cortical-cerebellar loop) later develops during the transition from PD-MCI to PDD.

Abnormal brain intrinsic functional connectivity (FC) has been documented in minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) by static connectivity analysis. However, changes in dynamic FC (dFC) remain unknown. We aimed to identify altered dFC within the default mode network (DMN) associated with MHE. Resting-state functional MRI data were acquired from 20 cirrhotic patients with MHE and 24 healthy controls. DMN seed regions were defined using seed-based FC analysis (centered on the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC)). Dynamic FC architecture was calculated using a sliding time-window method. K-means clustering (number of clusters = 2–4) was applied to estimate FC states. When the number of clusters was 2, MHE patients presented weaker connectivity strengths compared with controls in states 1 and 2. In state 1, decreased FC strength was found between the PCC/precuneus (PCUN) and right medial temporal lobe (MTL)/bilateral lateral temporal cortex (LTC); left inferior parietal lobule (IPL) and right MTL/left LTC; right IPL and right MTL/bilateral LTC; right MTL and right LTC; and medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) and right MTL/bilateral LTC. In state 2, reduced FC strength was observed between the PCC/PCUN and bilateral MTL/bilateral LTC; left IPL and left MTL/bilateral LTC/MPFC; and left LTC and right LTC. Altered connectivities from state 1 were correlated with patient cognitive performance. Similar findings were observed when the number of clusters was set to 3 or 4. Aberrant dynamic DMN connectivity is an additional characteristic of MHE. Dynamic connectivity analysis offers a novel paradigm for understanding MHE-related mechanisms.

Using the basic model of double edge cutting, the minimum value of the total shear area produced by the two cutting edges is calculated to determine the chip flow direction: shearing takes place in the corresponding direction of chip flow to make the shear area minimum under specific cutting parameters with sharp corner tools. The chip flow angle can be obtained using the expression of the variation of the shear area with the chip flow angle. In this study, RATIO is defined as the ratio of the main to the minor cutting edge length engaged in cutting and is set variable on the basis of the constant equivalent cutting area. The chip flow angle corresponding to different values of RATIO predicted by the current model shows good correlation with the experimental measurement and FEM simulation results for various cutting conditions. An investigation of the effects of RATIO on the chip flow angle has been made under various cutting conditions and it is demonstrated that RATIO has a significant influence on the chip flow angle.

The quantum holography scenario with classical thermal light source based on the second-order correlation measurement is proposed. Contrastive analysis prove that the quantum holography can be carried out with classical thermal light source and entangled two-photon light source. For the second-order correlation measurement in quantum holography, the “unbalanced test system” condition must be satisfied.

To investigate the pathogenic and clinical characteristics of chemical burns in recent years, so as to provide reference for its prevention and treatment.Medical records of patients with chemical burns out of 6299 burn patients admitted to our unit from January 1992 to December 2011 were screened and retrospectively analyzed, including gender, age, onset time of the injury, pre-hospital management, injury cause, injury-causing chemicals, body site of wound, burn area and depth, complications, treatment and follow-up results. The data of age distribution and incidence of complications were processed with chi-square test.Investigation showed that 605 out of 6299 burn patients (accounting for 9.60%) were chemically injured. (1) Among the patients with chemical burns, the ratio of male to female was 5.11:1.00, with the mean age of 37.6 years, and the highest incidence occurred in patients aged from 20 to 29 years (29.42%, 178/605). The difference in the numbers of patients among different age groups was statistically significant (χ(2) = 207.298, P0.01). (2) Chemical burns mainly occurred in summer (28.43%, 172/605) and autumn (38.35%, 232/605). About 72.07% (436/605) of patients received irrigation before admission. (3) In 453 (74.88%) patients, injury occurred during industrial production. The main injury-causing chemicals were acid (46.61%, 282/605) and alkali (20.66%, 125/605), and among them the sulfuric acid accounted for the highest ratio (18.18%, 110/605). (4) The main wound positions of chemical burns were the limbs (289 patients) and the head, face, and neck region (263 patients). The mean burn area was 5.98% TBSA. The depth ranged from superficial partial-thickness to full-thickness. (5) Three hundred and forty-eight patients with chemical burns suffered common complications, including inhalation injury (154, 44.25%), ocular burns (113, 32.47%), and poisoning (81, 23.28%). There was statistically significant difference in the incidence of the three complications (χ(2) = 23.086, P0.01). (6) Five hundred and twenty-one patients were cured, with the cure rate of 86.12%, and 76.20% out of them healed with scars (397/521). Three patients died of poisoning, with a mortality of 0.50%.The patients with chemical burns accounted for a high proportion of the burn patients admitted to our unit in the same period. The chemical burns mainly involved young males with the relatively close time of onset, and acid and alkali were the main causative factors in the process of industrial production. Most patients had the clinical features of deep wound, high incidence of complications, and liability of scar formation after wound healing.

China is suffering from a sustained shortage of crude oil supply, making fuel ethanol and other biofuels alternative solutions for this issue. However, taking into account the country's large population and dwindling arable land due to rapid urbanization, it is apparent that current fuel ethanol production from grain-based feedstocks is not sustainable, and lignocellulosic biomass, particularly agricultural residues that are abundantly available in China, is the only choice for China to further expand its fuel ethanol production, provided economically viable processes can be developed. In this chapter, cutting edge progress in bioethanol is reviewed, with a focus on the understanding of the molecular structure of the feedstock, leading pretreatment technologies, enzymatic hydrolysis of the cellulose component and strategies for the co-fermentation of the C5 and C6 sugars with engineered microorganisms. Finally, process integration and optimization is addressed with a case study on the COFCO Corporation's pilot plant, and challenges and perspectives for commercial production of bioethanol are highlighted.

In the study of traditional Chinese medicine wastewater, it was discussed for the effect of different sets of 16S rDNA universal primers on DGGE fingerprinting and microbial community diversity of aerobic and anaerobic activated sludge from one traditional Chinese medicine wastewater treatment. The genome DNA of activated sludge was isolated, and eleven sets of primers were used to amplify the four variable regions of 16S rDNA, the resolution of DGGE fingerprinting and community diversity was analyzed. The results indicated that community diversity with different sets of universal primers by DGGE was obviously different. Separated patterns of the V3 and V6-V8 regions were better than of V1-V3 and V3-V5. In the DGGE profiles, bands and diversity from V3 were most, bands and diversity from V3-V5 and V6-V8 were a little worse than those of V3. According to the length of targeted sequence and the resolution of DGGE fingerprinting, V6-V8 (B968F/B1401R) are recommended to be used to do the DGGE analysis. Mix I341F/I534R and B341F/B534R PCR product equally to make DGGE analysis can get more community diversity information.

To evaluate the efficacy of intraperitoneal transplantation of microencapsulated HepG2 cells in rats with hepatolenticular degeneration (HLD).HLD was induced by copper-overloaded diet with forage containing 1 g/kg copper sulfate and water with 0.185% copper sulfate for 12 weeks in rats. One hundred and twenty three-month-old male Wistar rats were randomly intraperitoneal injected with normal saline (NS), microencapsulated HepG2 cells or non-microencapsulated HepG2 cells 9 weeks after copper-overloaded diet. Blood or liver samples were obtained at five time points: 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after transplantation (n=8). The other 8 rats receiving normal diet were used as the control group. Serum levels of ALT, AST, albumin and Cu and liver Cu contents were measured.Serum ALT, AST and Cu levels and liver Cu contents in the NS-treated HLD, microencapsulated HepG2 cells and non-microencapsulated HepG2 cells transplantation groups increased significantly at all time points, in contrast, serum albumin levels decreased significantly in the NS-treated HLD and non-microencapsulated HepG2 cells transplantation groups compared with those in the control group at all time points (P0.05), but serum albumin levels in the microencapsulated HepG2 cells transplantation restored to the level of the control group 28 days after transplantation. Serum ALT, AST and Cu levels and liver Cu contents in the microencapsulated HepG2 cells and non-microencapsulated HepG2 cells transplantation groups were significantly lower, in contrast, albumin levels were higher than those in the NS-treated HLD group on almost time points (P0.05). Serum levels of ALT, AST and Cu and liver Cu contents in the microencapsulated HepG2 cells transplantation group decreased 7 or 14 days after transplantation, while serum albumin levels increased significantly 14 days after transplantation compared with those in the non-microencapsulated HepG2 cells transplantation group (P0.05).Intraperitoneal transplantation of microencapsulated HepG2 cells can relieve hepatic damage, reduce serum and liver Cu levels, and improve copper metabolism, therefore it is promising for the treatment of HLD.

Hepatocyte transplantation is an alternative to transplantation of the whole liver. Compared with xenogeneic hepatocytes, primary hepatocytes have some advantages, such as a more powerful function and a smaller frequency of rejection caused by the host. Cell microencapsulation prevents direct access of host cells to the graft but cannot impede transfer of transplant-derived peptides, which can cross the physical barrier. Sertoli cells are central to the immune privilege demonstrated in the testis, and their actions have been utilized to protect cell transplants. Co-microencapsulating Sertoli cells with HepG2 cells has proved to be a valuable strategy in hepatocyte transplantation. Thus mixed microcapsules of primary rat hepatocytes and primary Sertoli cells may improve metabolic function in a d-galactosamine and lipopolysaccharide-induced rat model of acute liver failure.

This is a retrospective study of older patients admitted to the First and Second Affiliated Hospitals of Wenzhou Medical College, China, with a diagnosis of fever of unknown origin. The study took place from January 1998 to December 2006 among 102 patients who fulfilled the criteria. Infections were responsible for 50 cases (49.1%), followed by no diagnosis in 27 (26.5%), miscellaneous in nine (8.8%), neoplasms in eight (7.8%) and connective tissue disease in another eight (7.8%). Mycobacterium TB was the most frequent type of infection diagnosed.

The acetate kinase (ack) gene from Ethanoligenens sp. hit B49, isolated from a biohydrogen production bioreactor, is a key enzyme and responsible for dephosphorylation of acetyl phosphate with the concomitant production of acetate and ATP; it was cloned, sequenced, and functionally expressed in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3). It contained a 1200-bp open reading frame and encoded a 399-amino-acid protein kinase (molecular weight, 43.22 kDa; isoionic point, pH 5.93) sharing 58% similarity with Thermotoga maritima MSB8 ack. Ack was heterologously expressed in E.coli BL21 (DE3). Ack specific activities of the refolded ack inclusion body from Ethanoligenens sp. hit B49 is 42.12 U at 25 degrees C, and the renaturation percent is 14.36%.

We propose optical experiments to study the depth of field for a thermal light lensless ghost imaging system. It is proved that the diaphragm is an important factor to influence the depth of field, and the ghost images of two detected objects with longitudinal distance less than the depth of field can be achieved simultaneously. The longitudinal coherence scale of the thermal light lensless ghost imaging determines the depth of field. Theoretical analysis can well explain the experimental results.
