Determining the patterns and drivers of the small-scale species–area relationship (SAR) is crucial for improving our understanding of community assembly and biodiversity patterns. Niche-based and stochastic processes are two principal categories of mechanisms potentially driving SARs. However, their relative importance has rarely been quantified rigorously owing to scale dependence and the simplified niche volumes often used. In a fully mapped, 24-hm2 plot of a typical subtropical forest, we built the SARs and well-defined niche hyper-volumes of a broad range of environmental variables at scales of 10–70 m (cell sizes). We then simulated passive sampling and partitioned the variances of the SAR slopes to disentangle these two contrasting mechanisms. We found that the small-scale SAR best followed a power-law relationship, consistent with large-scale SARs. The SAR slope declined with increasing scale; it was lower than expected under passive sampling at scales below 30 m and higher at larger scales. Environmental niches explained more (39%–64%) of the slope at larger scales, exceeding 50% at scales >30 m, and these niches always captured the majority of the structured slopes. Environmental position (environmental mean values) effects were steady in absolute strength across scales and explained most (98%–68%) of the niche effect, but this proportion decreased with increasing scale. The effect of environmental heterogeneity increased with spatial scales, starting to rise at the 30 m scale after controlling for environmental position. Excluding soil properties from analyses strongly reduced these niche effects, highlighting the importance of soils for structuring the small-scale SAR. There was also substantial stochasticity in the SAR slopes, which was only partially explained by passive sampling. Synthesis. Our results show that the small-scale SAR in the studied subtropical forest follows a power law, exhibits a scale shift in SAR slope at 30 m, and is strongly shaped by niche effects that are dominated by environmental position relative to heterogeneity. However, soil heterogeneity controls the increase in niche effect and the shift in the SAR slope with increasing spatial scales. Hence, edaphic factors can be responsible for scale dependence in small-scale SARs, thereby linking small-scale and large-scale SARs.

Tree size shapes forest carbon dynamics and determines how trees interact with their environment, including a changing climate. Here, we conduct the first global analysis of among-site differences in how aboveground biomass stocks and fluxes are distributed with tree size. We analyzed repeat tree censuses from 25 large-scale (4-52 ha) forest plots spanning a broad climatic range over five continents to characterize how aboveground biomass, woody productivity, and woody mortality vary with tree diameter. We examined how the median, dispersion, and skewness of these size-related distributions vary with mean annual temperature and precipitation. In warmer forests, aboveground biomass, woody productivity, and woody mortality were more broadly distributed with respect to tree size. In warmer and wetter forests, aboveground biomass and woody productivity were more right skewed, with a long tail towards large trees. Small trees (1-10 cm diameter) contributed more to productivity and mortality than to biomass, highlighting the importance of including these trees in analyses of forest dynamics. Our findings provide an improved characterization of climate-driven forest differences in the size structure of aboveground biomass and dynamics of that biomass, as well as refined benchmarks for capturing climate influences in vegetation demographic models.

Ecosystem stability reveals how ecosystems respond to global change over time. Yet, the focus of past research on small spatial grains and extents overlooks scale dependence and how broad-scale environmental gradients shape stability. Here, we use forest inventory data covering a broad latitudinal gradient from the temperate to the tropical zone to examine cross-scale variation in stability of aboveground biomass and underlying stabilizing mechanisms. While stability did not shift systematically with latitude at either spatial grain, we found evidence that species asynchrony increased towards the tropics at the small spatial grain while species stability decreased at both spatial grains. Moreover, latitude stabilized forest communitiesviaits effects on both stabilizing mechanisms, which compensated for the weak and destabilizing effects of species richness. Yet, the trade-off in the relative importance of species stability and species asynchrony for stability was not mediated by latitude, suggesting that context-dependent factors - to a greater extent than macroecological ones - underlie large-scale patterns of stability. Our results highlight the crucial role of species asynchrony and species stability in determining ecosystem stability across broad-scale environmental gradients, suggesting that conserving biodiversity alone may not be sufficient for stabilizing naturally-assembled forest ecosystems.

Phylogenetic trees have been extensively used in community ecology. However, how the phylogeny construction affects ecological inferences is poorly understood. In this study, we constructed three different types of phylogenetic trees (a synthetic-tree generated using V.PhyloMaker, a barcode-tree generated using rbcL+matK+trnH-psbA, and a plastome-tree generated from plastid genomes) that represented an increasing level of phylogenetic resolution among 580 woody plant species from six forest dynamic plots in subtropical evergreen broadleaved forests of China. We then evaluated the performance of each phylogeny in estimations of community phylogenetic structure, turnover and phylogenetic signal in functional traits. As expected, the plastome-tree was most resolved and most supported for relationships among species. For local phylogenetic structure, the three trees showed consistent results with Faith's PD and MPD; however, only the synthetic-tree produced significant clustering patterns using MNTD for some plots. For phylogenetic turnover, contrasting results between the molecular trees and the synthetic-tree occurred only with nearest neighbor distance. The barcode-tree agreed more with the plastome-tree than the synthetic-tree for both phylogenetic structure and turnover. For functional traits, both the barcode-tree and plastome-tree detected phylogenetic signal in maximum height, but only the plastome-tree detected signal in leaf width. This is the first study that uses plastid genomes in large-scale community phylogenetics. Our results highlight the improvement of plastome-trees over barcode-trees and synthetic-trees for the analyses studied here. Our results also point to the possibility of type I and II errors in estimation of phylogenetic structure and turnover and detection of phylogenetic signal when using synthetic-trees.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and ectomycorrhizal (EcM) associations are critical for host-tree performance. However, how mycorrhizal associations correlate with the latitudinal tree beta-diversity remains untested. Using a global dataset of 45 forest plots representing 2,804,270 trees across 3840 species, we test how AM and EcM trees contribute to total beta-diversity and its components (turnover and nestedness) of all trees. We find AM rather than EcM trees predominantly contribute to decreasing total beta-diversity and turnover and increasing nestedness with increasing latitude, probably because wide distributions of EcM trees do not generate strong compositional differences among localities. Environmental variables, especially temperature and precipitation, are strongly correlated with beta-diversity patterns for both AM trees and all trees rather than EcM trees. Results support our hypotheses that latitudinal beta-diversity patterns and environmental effects on these patterns are highly dependent on mycorrhizal types. Our findings highlight the importance of AM-dominated forests for conserving global forest biodiversity., The relationship of mycorrhizal associations with latitudinal gradients in tree beta-diversity is unexplored. Using a global dataset approach, this study examines how trees with arbuscular mycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal associations contribute to latitudinal beta-diversity patterns and the environmental controls of these patterns.

Fungal influence on density dependence Tree species in highly diverse tropical forests tend to exhibit conspecific negative density dependence, a phenomenon whereby individuals of the same species tend to grow at a distance from one another. This is understood to be a key driver of species coexistence. The strength of negative density dependence varies between species, but the mechanisms driving this variation are unknown. Chen et al. studied tree species in a subtropical forest in China and found an important role for soil-dwelling fungi in this variation. Elevated accumulation of pathogenic fungi leads to stronger negative density dependence, whereas elevated accumulation of mutualistic fungi leads to weaker negative density dependence. A widely observed pollinator decline around the world has led to the prediction that terrestrial ecosystems could be disrupted as plant pollination suffers, but declining pollination success has not been tested rigorously in wild plants, and it still remains unclear how pollination success of plant species responds differently in the context of pollinator decline. By viewing the number of seeds per pod as a quantitative measure of successful pollination, we examined seed pods in 4637 herbarium specimens of 109 obligately outcrossing legumes collected over the past century. We found that only 13 species showed significant temporal change with nine of those as an increase. None of the three subfamilies of legumes showed a consistent trend, and the subfamily Papilionoideae with the most specialized flowers, had increasing seed number per pod more often than decreasing. We conclude that legume pollination in China shows no sign of disruption and the effects of plant-pollinator disruption may be more complicated than simplistic predictions have allowed.

Aims The relative roles of ecological processes in structuring beta diversity are usually quantified by variation partitioning of beta diversity with respect to environmental and spatial variables or gamma diversity. However, if important environmental or spatial factors are omitted, or a scale mismatch occurs in the analysis, unaccounted spatial correlation will appear in the residual errors and lead to residual spatial correlation and problematic inferences. Methods Multi-scale ordination (MSO) partitions the canonical ordination results by distance into a set of empirical variograms which characterize the spatial structures of explanatory, conditional and residual variance against distance. Then these variance components can be used to diagnose residual spatial correlation by checking assumptions related to geostatistics or regression analysis. In this paper, we first illustrate the performance of MSO using a simulated data set with known properties, thus making statistical issues explicit. We then test for significant residual spatial correlation in beta diversity analyses of the Gutianshan (GTS) 24-ha subtropical forest plot in eastern China. Important Findings Even though we used up to 24 topographic and edaphic variables mapped at high resolution and spatial variables representing spatial structures at all scales, we still found significant residual spatial correlation at the 10 m × 10 m quadrat scale. This invalidated the analysis and inferences at this scale. We also show that MSO provides a complementary tool to test for significant residual spatial correlation in beta diversity analyses. Our results provided a strong argument supporting the need to test for significant residual spatial correlation before interpreting the results of beta diversity analyses.

The decline in species richness at higher latitudes is among the most fundamental patterns in ecology. Whether changes in species composition across space (beta-diversity) contribute to this gradient of overall species richness (gamma-diversity) remains hotly debated. Previous studies that failed to resolve the issue suffered from a well-known tendency for small samples in areas with high gamma-diversity to have inflated measures of beta-diversity. Here, we provide a novel analytical test, using beta-diversity metrics that correct the gamma-diversity and sampling biases, to compare beta-diversity and species packing across a latitudinal gradient in tree species richness of 21 large forest plots along a large environmental gradient in East Asia. We demonstrate that after accounting for topography and correcting the gamma-diversity bias, tropical forests still have higher beta-diversity than temperate analogues. This suggests that beta-diversity contributes to the latitudinal species richness gradient as a component of gamma-diversity. Moreover, both niche specialization and niche marginality (a measure of niche spacing along an environmental gradient) also increase towards the equator, after controlling for the effect of topographical heterogeneity. This supports the joint importance of tighter species packing and larger niche space in tropical forests while also demonstrating the importance of local processes in controlling beta-diversity.

Foundation species structure forest communities and ecosystems but are difficult to identify without long-term observations or experiments. We used statistical criteria--outliers from size-frequency distributions and scale-dependent negative effects on alpha diversity and positive effects on beta diversity--to identify candidate foundation woody plant species in 12 large forest-dynamics plots spanning 26 degrees of latitude in China. We used these data (1) to identify candidate foundation species in Chinese forests, (2) to test the hypothesis--based on observations of a midlatitude peak in functional trait diversity and high local species richness but few numerically dominant species in tropical forests--that foundation woody plant species are more frequent in temperate than tropical or boreal forests, and (3) to compare these results with data from the Americas to suggest candidate foundation genera in northern hemisphere forests. Using the most stringent criteria, only two species of Acer, the canopy tree Acer ukurunduense and the shrubby treelet Acer barbinerve, were identified in temperate plots as candidate foundation species. Using more relaxed criteria, we identified four times more candidate foundation species in temperate plots (including species of Acer, Pinus, Juglans, Padus, Tilia, Fraxinus, Prunus, Taxus, Ulmus, and Corlyus) than in (sub)tropical plots (the treelets or shrubs Aporosa yunnanensis, Ficus hispida, Brassaiopsis glomerulata, and Orophea laui). Species diversity of co-occurring woody species was negatively associated with basal area of candidate foundation species more frequently at 5- and 10-m spatial grains (scale) than at a 20-m grain. Conversely, Bray-Curtis dissimilarity was positively associated with basal area of candidate foundation species more frequently at 5-m than at 10- or 20-m grains. Both stringent and relaxed criteria supported the hypothesis that foundation species are more common in mid-latitude temperate forests. Comparisons of candidate foundation species in Chinese and North American forests suggest that Acer be investigated further as a foundation tree genus.

Foundation species play important roles in structuring forest communities and ecosystems. Foundation species are difficult to identify without long-term observations or experiments and their foundational roles rarely are identified before they are declining or threatened. We used new statistical criteria based on size-frequency distributions, species diversity, and spatial codispersion among woody plants to identify potential (“candidate”) foundation species in 12 large forest dynamics plots spanning 26 degrees of latitude in China. We used these data to identify a suite of candidate foundation species in Chinese forests; test the hypothesis that foundation woody plant species are more frequent in the temperate zone than in the tropics; and compare these results with comparable data from the Americas to suggest candidate foundation genera in Northern Hemisphere forests. We identified more candidate foundation species in temperate plots than in subtropical or tropical plots, and this relationship was independent of the latitudinal gradient in overall species richness. Two species of Acer, the canopy tree Acer ukurunduense and the shrubby treelet Acer barbinerve were the only two species that met both criteria in full to be considered as candidate foundation species. When we relaxed the diversity criteria, Acer, Tilia, and Juglans spp., and Corlyus mandshurica were frequently identified as candidate foundation species. In tropical plots, the tree Mezzettiopsis creaghii and the shrubs or treelets Aporusa yunnanensis and Ficus hispida had some characteristics associated with foundation species. Species diversity of co-occurring woody species was negatively associated with basal area of candidate foundation species more frequently at 5- and 10-m spatial grains (scale) than at a 20-m grain. Conversely, Bray-Curtis dissimilarity was positively associated with basal area of candidate foundation species more frequently at 5-m than at 10- or 20-m grains. Our data support the hypothesis that foundation species should be more common in temperate than in tropical or boreal forests, and suggest that in the Northern Hemisphere that Acer be investigated further as a foundation tree genus.

We study a deep learning (DL) based limited feedback methods for multi-antenna systems. Deep neural networks (DNNs) are introduced to replace an end-to-end limited feedback procedure including pilot-aided channel training process, channel codebook design, and beamforming vector selection. The DNNs are trained to yield binary feedback information as well as an efficient beamforming vector which maximizes the effective channel gain. There is increasing concern regarding how plant diversity affects litter decomposition. However, few experiments have simultaneously investigated the independent effects of litter species composition and the richness of above-ground tree communities on litter decomposition. To elucidate the two facets of diversity effects on leaf litter decomposition, a field experiment with litterbags containing monospecific or mixed litter of Schima superba, Cyclobalanopsis glauca, and Castanopsis eyrie was conducted for 30 consecutive months in a subtropical forest. In addition, the fungal community composition of the decomposing litter was assessed in the later decomposition stage. Our results revealed that leaf litter species composition but not litter species richness per se affected decomposition rates, in which the decomposition rates were faster in the presence of S. superba litter but slower in the presence of C. eyrei litter. Soil properties showed stronger impacts on litter mass loss in the earlier stages, while the litter species composition became more important in the later stage. Moreover, above-ground tree species richness had a significant effect on leaf litter decomposition. As expected, the effects of above-ground tree species richness and litter species composition became much stronger with time, probably owing to the indirect effects of concomitant changes in the composition of the litter fungal community, which in turn depended on the changes of microenvironment or on accumulated recalcitrant substances in the late stage of decomposition. Overall, our findings demonstrate that not only litter species composition but also above-ground tree species communities play critical roles in regulating litter decomposition, particularly in the late stage. An investigation into the interactions between plant and decomposer communities is required to gain a full understanding of the mechanisms underlying litter mixture decomposition.

The correlation between primary producer diversity and the productivity (or biomass) of ecosystems is one of the most important and broadly studied relationship in ecology. Ecologists have discussed this relationship from two fundamentally different perspectives. Historically, productivity has been viewed as driver of species diversity. Recently, many studies have demonstrated that diversity can also control, rather than responds to, the production of biomass. These contrasting points of view have led to the debate about whether species diversity is the cause or the consequence of community productivity. Multivariate productivity-diversity hypothesis has been put forward to reconciling this debate. This hypothesis state that: (i) the environmental factors are the direct driver of species that can coexist within an area; (ii) the biomass of the area is directly influenced by the environmental factors that limit production; (iii) the environmental factors indirectly influenced biomass of the area via influencing the species number to coexist within the area that affects how efficiently environmental resources are converted into biomass. To date, empirical support for this hypothesis is scarce, especially for structurally complex terrestrial ecosystems. In this study, we modified multivariate productivity- diversity hypothesis to accommodate complex vertical structure of forest ecosystems, and used structural equation modeling and data from a large evergreen broad-leaved forest dynamic plot (24 hm2 in area) in subtropical China to understand the causal relationships among environmental factors, species richness, dominance and aboveground biomass. Trees were grouped into tow functional groups (overstorey and understorey) in order to improve the ability to detecting the diversity effect. The final model explained 30% and 58% of the variation in aboveground biomass of overstorey and understorey, respectively. Dominance was the most important factor in explaining the variation of aboveground biomass of overstorey, while both species richness and environment factors were the most important factors in explaining the variation of aboveground biomass of understorey. Consistent with the predictions of multivariate productivity-diversity hypothesis, (i) aboveground biomass were directly influenced by the environmental factors in both overstorey and understorey; (ii) environmental factors directly influence tree dominance and species richness of overstorey, but only directly influence species richness of understorey; (iii) environmental factors indirectly influence aboveground biomass of overstorey by influencing dominant, while indirectly influence aboveground biomass of understorey by influencing species richness. Interestingly, species richness was only important to explaining variation in aboveground biomass of understorey. This may be attributed to the low light condition in understorey, which may alleviative competition among trees of understorey. To our knowledge, this study provides the first empirical evidence supporting the multivariate productivity-diversity hypothesis in forest ecosystem thus contributes to extending the generality of this framework. Our result also highlights both dominant species and higher species richness is required to maximizing forest biomass.

AIM: The relationship between the proportion of sites occupied by a species and the area of a site [occupancy–area relationship (OAR)] offers key information for biodiversity management and has long fascinated ecologists. We quantified the variation in OAR for 3,157 woody species in 17 forest plots worldwide and tested the relative importance of environment and species traits for explaining this variation and evaluated overall model predictive ability. LOCATION: Global. TIME PERIOD: Early 21st century. MAJOR TAXA STUDIED: Woody plants. METHODS: We used mixed‐effect regression to examine the observed shape of the OAR (its “slope”) against species‐specific and plot‐wide predictors: coarse‐grain occupancy, tree size, plot species richness, energy availability and topographic complexity. RESULTS: We found large variation in OAR slopes, and the variation was strongest among species within plots. The OAR slopes showed a latitudinal trend and were steeper near the equator. As predicted, coarse‐grain occupancy and tree size negatively affected OAR slopes, whereas species richness had a positive effect and explained most of the variance between plots. Although hypothesized directionalities were broadly confirmed, traits and environment had relatively limited overall predictive power. MAIN CONCLUSIONS: These results document the variation of the OAR for 3,157 species at near‐global extent. We found a latitudinal gradient in OAR slopes and confirmed key hypothesized predictors. But at this global extent and over the large set of species analysed, the remaining unexplained variation in OAR slopes was substantial. Nevertheless, this large‐scale empirical analysis of the OAR offers an initial step towards a more general use of OARs for the fine‐scale prediction of species distributions and abundance.

Forests play a vital role in regulation of the global carbon cycle. Mechanistically understanding how their ecosystem functioning relates to biodiversity is necessary for predicting the consequences of biodiversity loss and for setting conservation priorities. Here, we test whether carbon stocks in a subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest in China are more strongly influenced by plant functional diversity (FD), as would be predicted by the ‘niche complementarity hypothesis’, or by community-weighted mean (CWM) functional trait values, as would be predicted by the ‘mass ratio hypothesis’. Using data from a 24-ha plot subdivided into 400 m2 quadrats, we determined relationships of aboveground carbon (AGC) and topsoil (1–10 cm) organic carbon (SOC) to topographic variables, stem density, CWM and FD of six functional traits hypothesized to influence carbon stocks. After accounting for topographic variables and tree stem density, boosted regression tree models revealed that CWMs were the dominant driving factors for both AGC and SOC, whereas FD had negligible effects. AGC and SOC were influenced by different functional traits, with AGC responding most strongly to CWM values for wood density and maximum tree height, and SOC responding most strongly to elevation, indicating that these carbon stocks are shaped by different underlying mechanisms. Our results support the mass ratio hypothesis but not the niche complementarity hypothesis. Our study implies that, when it comes to maximizing forest carbon storage, conservation priorities should focus on protection of species with traits associated to high carbon stocks.

Extreme climatic events (ECEs) are predicted to increase in frequency and magnitude under scenarios of global change. It is well known that ECEs impact community structure and dynamics, but how ECEs alter community assembly remains unclear. The strength of local neighborhood interactions should be altered following ECEs, which could provide a mechanistic basis for how ECEs impact forest community dynamics. In a subtropical forest in China, we monitored the survival of more than 7800 understory seedlings representing 116 tree and shrub species since 2006, and this forest experienced an extreme and unexpected winter storm in February 2008. Here, we quantified changes in the effects of intraspecific and interspecific competition, as well as the effects of environmental variables driving seedling survival before and after the storm. We found that seedling density and Simpson diversity greatly increased after the winter storm. Seedling mortality and recruitment peaked in the second year after the storm, and then returned to pre-storm levels in subsequent census years. Seedling survival was negatively affected by conspecific and heterospecific tree density before the winter storm, while after the storm, survival was affected by conspecific seedling density and nearest taxon functional diversity (NTFd’) of tree neighbors, as well as by environmental variables. Moreover, we found a significant difference between abundant and less-abundant species in response to local neighborhood interactions before and after the storm. In short, community dynamics and the effects of local neighborhood on seedling survival were significantly altered following the extreme winter storm. Our study suggests that integrating abiotic and biotic interactions before and after ECEs, and taking functional traits into consideration, contributes to a better understanding of the biological response of forest community dynamics to environmental fluctuations.

In this paper, we study full-dimension multiple-input multiple-output (FD-MIMO) systems where a base station is equipped with multiple panel array (MPA) antennas. As the MPA is regarded as a promising means of practical implementation for the FD-MIMO, it is important to characterize a channel modeling and a codebook design. Thus, we first examine the exponential correlation model and the three-dimensional correlation model for the FD-MIMO with MPA. In addition, since antenna elements are not uniformly spaced in the MPA systems, a discrete Fourier transform (DFT) codebook may not be suitable due to phase ambiguity (PA). Thus, we investigation three new codebook design methods which reflect the PA. In numerical results, we confirm that PA compensation and per-panel quantization are effective for MPA systems.

Climate is widely recognised as an important determinant of the latitudinal diversity gradient. However, most existing studies make no distinction between direct and indirect effects of climate, which substantially hinders our understanding of how climate constrains biodiversity globally. Using data from 35 large forest plots, we test hypothesised relationships amongst climate, topography, forest structural attributes (stem abundance, tree size variation and stand basal area) and tree species richness to better understand drivers of latitudinal tree diversity patterns. Climate influences tree richness both directly, with more species in warm, moist, aseasonal climates and indirectly, with more species at higher stem abundance. These results imply direct limitation of species diversity by climatic stress and more rapid (co-)evolution and narrower niche partitioning in warm climates. They also support the idea that increased numbers of individuals associated with high primary productivity are partitioned to support a greater number of species.

Gaining a better understanding of the legacy effects of logging and forest restoration on soil microbial communities could improve our ability to conserve biodiversity and promote ecosystem sustainability. Herein, we investigated how soil microbial community is linked to natural, restored, and planted forests and the legacies of historical forest. Soil microbial biomass and composition were measured in four forest types (i.e., primary forest, once-clearcut forest, twice-logged forest, and plantation forest) and related to physico-chemical soil properties and forest community structure data by using analysis of covariance. Fungal, bacterial, and total microbial biomass measured by phospholipid fatty acid profiles were significantly lower in the two secondary forests and the plantation than in the primary forest. The conversion of vegetation and soil regimes due to forest logging altered microbial communities. Our findings elucidate the correlation of plant communities and soil characteristics to soil microbial communities in the context of subtropical forest management. Naturally restored and planted forests may affect soil microorganisms largely by directly modifying the soil labile C and N fractions of organic matter.

Restoring the functions of disturbed forest to mitigation climate change is a main topic of policy makers. Better understanding of factors that directly influence post- disturbance forest biomass recovery is urgently needed to guide forest restoration and management. In this study, we examine changes in forest stand structure, wood density and biomass of forests recovering from different anthropogenic disturbances that represent forest land-use types in sub- tropical China: plantation, twice-logged and once-logged secondary forests, and compare them with undisturbed old- growth forest. Stand structure and wood density in all dis- turbed forests were evidently different from that of old- growth forest, even after 50-year regrowth. Forest biomass increased along plantation, twice-logged, once-logged and old-growth forests, with total living biomass (TLB) ranging from 150.8 ± 4.6 to 278.4 ± 1.5 Mg ha -1 , aboveground biomass from 111.8 ± 4.2 to 204.1 ± 1.5 Mg ha -1 and coarse-root biomass from 33.0 ± 0.9 to 71.0 ± 0.8 Mg ha -1 . However, fine-root biomass was highest in plan- tation (5.99 ± 0.52 Mg ha -1 ) and lowest in once-logged forest (3.35 ± 0.19 Mg ha -1 ). Both changes in stand structure and functional trait (wood density) directly deter- mine forest biomass recovery according to the result that 10.6,35.5and8.2 %ofvariationinTLBoverthedisturbance gradient were independently explained by basal area (\20 cmdiameter),basal area(C20 cmdiameter)andwood density,respectively.Ourresultssuggestthatrecoveryforest structure to the state associated with undisturbed forests will lead to large carbon sink in disturbed forests. In addition, trait-based managing approach should not be overlooked when maximizing carbon storage is a major management objective.

The aims of this study were to investigate the diurnal and seasonal variations in soil respiration in different broad-leaved forest types with different degrees of human disturbance, to identify the major abiotic and biotic factors affecting the daily and seasonal patterns of soil respiration, and to evaluate the effects of different forest management types and human disturbance on soil respiration in subtropical forests. We selected four different 1 hm2 forests with different degrees of human disturbance in Gutianshan, Zhejiang Province: An old-growth forest (OF, almost no human disturbance); two secondary forests (SF1, a secondary forest regrown after clear cutting about 50 years ago, and SF2, a secondary forest regrown after clear cutting about 50 years ago and selective cutting about 20 years ago); and a plantation forest (AF, planted about 20 years ago). We measured the diurnal and seasonal changes in soil respiration rates in each plot every month from May 2011 to July 2012. We also measured soil temperature and water content of the surface soil layer during sampling. The annual means of daily accumulated soil carbon release were 1.48, 1.48, 1.51, and 0.87 g C m-2 d-1 in OF, SF1, SF2, and AF plots, respectively. The soil respiration rate in AF was significantly lower than those in the other three forest types. On the diurnal scale, there were no significant variations in soil respiration rates among the four forest types. Our results indicated that the rate of soil respiration measured any time during the day can be used to predict daily accumulated soil carbon release. Significant positive relationships were found between soil respiration and surface soil temperature ( R 2=0.88-0.94) for all four forest types. There were no significant relationships between soil respiration and soil water content. The Q10 value of OF was significantly higher than those of the other three forest types. The results showed that the soil respiration rate and its sensitivity to temperature were significantly decreased in the plantation with the most intense human disturbance (AF). The soil respiration rates and Q10 values of both SF forests were similar to those of OF forest. Soil temperature was the most important driving factor for soil respiration. Together, our results implied that different degrees of human disturbance had different effects on soil respiration in these forests. This information is important to estimate the role of human interference in regional carbon cycles. Also, the finding that there was no significant variation in the diurnal soil respiration rates is very important for guiding further research on soil respiration in related regions.

The size distribution of trees in natural forests is a fundamental attribute of forest structure. Previous attempts to model tree size distributions using simple functions (such as power or Weibull functions) have had limited success, typically overestimating the number of large stems observed. We describe a model which assumes that the dominant mortality process is asymmetric competition when trees are smaller, and size-independent processes (e.g. disturbance) when trees are larger. This combination of processes leads to a size distribution which takes the form of a power distribution in the small tree phase and a Weibull distribution in the large tree phase. Analyses of data from four large-scale ( 24 ha each) subtropical and temperate forest plots totalling 99 ha and approximately 0.4 million trees provide support for this model in two respects: (a) the combined function provided unbiased predictions and (b) power-law functions fitted to small trees had exponents that deviated from the universal exponent of 22 predicted by metabolic scaling theory, gradually decreasing from subtropical evergreen to temperate deciduous forests along the latitudinal gradient.

With the full survey data for a 24-ha subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest dynamics plot, we evaluated spatial variation in forest structure characteristics (basal area and aboveground biomass), and calculated the minimal sample size and total sampling area necessary to estimate the forest structure characteristics within 20% (±10%) of the observed values with 95% probability for particular quadrat sizes by using a computer program that is designed to simulate the sampling process by allowing different sized quadrats to be randomly located within the sampling region. We found that (1) based on the 600 20 m×20 m subplots, basal area and aboveground biomass displayed a high degree of variation, with respective coefficients of variation of 27% and 31%; (2) based on the computer simulation analysis, the variability of basal area and aboveground biomass decreased with increasing quadrat size. The number of quadrats required to achieve the specified degree of precision dropped sharply with the increase of quadrat size. However, the total sampling area increased with increasing quadrat size, suggesting that using several small quadrats across the sampling area is more efficient than using fewer larger quadrats. Results of this study are valuable for evaluating the reliability of previous research and may assist researchers in designing effective sampling strategies for future field surveys, particularly in subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forests in China.

Deterministic and stochastic processes jointly determine the community dynamics of forest succession. However, it has been widely held in previous studies that deterministic processes dominate forest succession. Furthermore, inference of mechanisms for community assembly may be misleading if based on a single axis of diversity alone. In this study, we evaluated the relative roles of deterministic and stochastic processes along a disturbance gradient by integrating species, functional, and phylogenetic beta diversity in a subtropical forest chronosequence in Southeastern China. We found a general pattern of increasing species turnover, but little-to-no change in phylogenetic and functional turnover over succession at two spatial scales. Meanwhile, the phylogenetic and functional beta diversity were not significantly different from random expectation. This result suggested a dominance of stochastic assembly, contrary to the general expectation that deterministic processes dominate forest succession. On the other hand, we found significant interactions of environment and disturbance and limited evidence for significant deviations of phylogenetic or functional turnover from random expectations for different size classes. This result provided weak evidence of deterministic processes over succession. Stochastic assembly of forest succession suggests that post-disturbance restoration may be largely unpredictable and difficult to control in subtropical forests.
