Abstract Background Gasdermin D (GSDMD) mediated pyroptosis plays a significant role in the pathophysiology of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. However, the precise mechanisms regulating pyroptosis remain unclear. In the study, we aimed to investigate the underlying mechanism of pyroptosis in myocardial I/R injury. Methods In the present study, we analyzed the effects of USP5 on the RIPK1 kinase activity mediated pyroptosis in vitro after H/R (hypoxia/reoxygenation) and in vivo in a MI/R mouse model. TTC and Evan’s blue dye, Thioflavin S and immunohistochemistry staining were performed in wild-type, RIPK1flox/flox Cdh5-Cre and USP5 deficiency mice. CMEC cells were transfected with si-USP5. HEK293T cells were transfected with USP5 and RIPK1 overexpression plasmid or its mutants. The levels of USP5, RIPK1, Caspase-8, FADD and GSDMD were determined by Western blot. Protein interactions were evaluated by immunoprecipitation. The protein colocalization in cells was monitored using a confocal microscope. Results In this study, our data demonstrate that RIPK1 is essential for limiting cardiac endothelial cell (CMEC) pyroptosis mediated by caspase-8 in response to myocardial I/R. Additionally, we investigate the role of ubiquitin-specific protease 5 (USP5) as a deubiquitinase for RIPK1. Mechanistically, USP5 interacts with RIPK1, leading to its deubiquitination and stabilization. Conclusions These findings offer new insights into the role of USP5 in regulating RIPK1-induced pyroptosis.

BackgroundCarcinosarcoma is a rare esophageal tumor, accounting for approximately 0.27-2.8% of malignant esophageal tumors. This study aims to investigate the clinical pathological characteristics, surgical treatment outcomes, and analysis of prognostic factors in esophageal carcinosarcoma (ECS).MethodsClinical data from sixteen patients diagnosed with esophageal sarcomatoid carcinoma who underwent surgical interventions were retrospectively analyzed. Clinical and pathological features, treatment modalities, and postoperative outcomes were systematically examined.ResultsOut of the 1261 patients who underwent surgical treatment for esophageal cancer, 16 cases were pathologically confirmed as carcinosarcoma. Among them, two underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy, six received postoperative chemotherapy. Carcinosarcomas predominantly occurred in the middle (43.75%) and lower (50%) segments of the esophagus. Among the 16 cases, 10 presented as polypoid, 4 as ulcerative, and 2 as medullary types. Microscopic examination revealed coexistence and transitional transitions between sarcomatous and carcinoma components. Pathological staging showed 5 cases in stage T1, 2 in stage T2, and 9 in stage T3, with lymph node metastasis observed in 8 cases (50%). TNM staging revealed 2 cases in stage I, 9 in stage II, and 5 in stage III. The overall 1, 3, and 5-year survival rates were 86.67%, 62.5%, and 57.14%, respectively. Univariate analysis indicated that pathological N staging influenced survival rates, while multivariate analysis demonstrated that pathological N staging was an independent prognostic factor.ConclusionsCarcinosarcoma is a rare esophageal tumor, accounting for approximately 0.27-2.8% of malignant esophageal tumors. Histologically, the biphasic pattern is a crucial diagnostic feature, although the carcinomatous component may not always be evident, especially in limited biopsies, leading to potential misclassification as pure sarcoma or squamous cell carcinoma. Despite its large volume and cellular atypia, carcinosarcoma carries a favorable prognosis. Complete surgical resection of the tumor and regional lymph node dissection is the preferred treatment approach for esophageal carcinosarcoma.

Cigarette smoke (CS), an indoor environmental pollutant, is a prominent risk factor for emphysema, which is a pathological feature of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Emerging function of circRNAs in immune responses and disease progression shed new light to explore the pathogenesis of emphysema. In this research, we demonstrated, by single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNAseq), that the ratio of M2 macrophages were increased in lung tissues of humans and mice with smoking-related emphysema. Further, our data showed that circADAMTS6 was associated with cigarette smoke extract (CSE)-induced M2 macrophage polarization. Mechanistically, in macrophages, circADAMTS6 stabilized CAMK2A mRNA via forming a circADAMTS6/IGF2BP2/CAMK2A RNA-protein ternary complex to activate CREB, which drives M2 macrophage polarization and leads to emphysema. In addition, in macrophages of mouse lung tissues, downregulation of circADAMTS6 reversed M2 macrophage polarization, the proteinase/anti-proteinase imbalance, and the elastin degradation, which protecting against CS-induced emphysema. Moreover, for macrophages and in a model with co-cultured lung organoids, the target of circADAMTS6 restored the growth of lung organoids compared to CSE-treated macrophages. Our results also demonstrated that, for smokers and COPD smokers, elevation of circADAMTS6 negatively correlated with lung function. Overall, this study reveals a novel mechanism for circADAMTS6-driven M2 macrophage polarization in smoking-related emphysema and postulates that circADAMTS6 could serve as a diagnostic and therapeutic marker for smoking-related emphysema.

Abstract Organic mechanoluminescence materials, featuring dual emission and ultralong phosphorescence characteristics, exhibit significant potential for applications in real-time stress sensing, pressure-sensitive lighting, advanced security marking techniques, and material breakage monitoring. However, due to immature molecular design strategies and unclear luminescence mechanisms, these materials remain rarely reported. In this study, we propose a valuable molecular design strategy to achieve dual-channel mechano-phosphorescence. By introducing the arylphosphine oxide group into a highly twisted molecular framework, enhanced intra- and intermolecular interactions could be achieved within rigid structures, leading to dual-channel mechanoluminescence with greatly promoted ultralong phosphorescence. Further investigations reveal the substantial boosting effect of intra- and intermolecular interactions on mechanoluminescence and ultralong phosphorescence properties by locking the highly twisted molecular skeleton. This work provides a concise and guiding route to develop novel smart responsive luminescence materials for widespread applications in material science.

Abstract Self-monitoring materials have promising applications in structural health monitoring. However, developing organic afterglow materials for self-monitoring is a highly intriguing yet challenging task. Herein, we design two organic molecules with a twisted donor-acceptor-acceptor’ configuration and achieve dual-emissive afterglow with tunable lifetimes (86.1–287.7 ms) by doping into various matrices. Based on a photosensitive resin, a series of complex structures are prepared using 3D printing technology. They exhibit tunable afterglow lifetime and Young’s Modulus by manipulating the photocuring time and humidity level. With sufficient photocuring or in dry conditions, a long-lived bright green afterglow without apparent deformation under external loading is realized. We demonstrate that the mechanical properties of complex 3D printing structures can be well monitored by controlling the photocuring time and humidity, and quantitively manifested by afterglow lifetimes. This work casts opportunities for constructing flexible 3D printing devices that can achieve sensing and real-time mechanical detection.

Abstract This study aims to investigate the mechanism of platelet activation‐induced thrombosis in patients with acute non‐ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) by detecting the expression of autophagy‐associated proteins in platelets of patients with NSTEMI. A prospective study was conducted on 121 patients with NSTEMI who underwent emergency coronary angiography and optical coherence tomography. The participants were divided into two groups: the ST segment un‐offset group (n = 64) and the ST segment depression group (n = 57). We selected a control group of 60 patients without AMI during the same period. The levels of autophagy‐associated proteins and the expression of autophagy‐associated proteins in platelets were measured using immunofluorescence staining and Western blot. In NSTEMI, the prevalence of red thrombus was higher in the ST segment un‐offset myocardial infarction (STUMI) group, whereas white thrombus was more common in the ST segment depression myocardial infarction (STDMI) group. Furthermore, the platelet aggregation rate was significantly higher in the white thrombus group compared with the red thrombus group. Compared with the control group, the autophagy‐related protein expression decreased, and the expression of αIIbβ3 increased in NSTEMI. The overexpression of Beclin1 could activate platelet autophagy and inhibit the expression of αIIbβ3. The results suggested that the increase in platelet aggregation rate in patients with NSTEMI may be potentially related to the change in autophagy. And the overexpression of Beclin1 could reduce the platelet aggregation rate by activating platelet autophagy. Our findings demonstrated that Beclin1 could be a potential therapeutic target for inhibiting platelet aggregation in NSTEMI.

Abstract Colorful radiative coolers (CRCs) can be widely applied for energy sustainability especially and meet aesthetic purposes simultaneously. Here, we propose a high-efficiency CRC based on thin film stacks and engineered diffuse reflection unit, which brings out 7.1 °C temperature difference compared with ambient under ~ 700 W·m−2 solar irradiation. Different from analogous schemes, the proposed CRCs produce vivid colors by diffuse reflection and rest of the incident light is specular-reflected without being absorbed. Adopting the structure of TiO2/SiO2 multilayer stack, the nanophotonic radiative cooler shows extra low absorption across the solar radiation waveband. Significant radiative cooling performance can be achieved with the emissivity reaching 95.6% in the atmosphere transparent window (8–13 μm). Moreover, such CRC can be fabricated on flexible substrates, facilitating various applications such as the thermal management of cars or wearables. In conclusion, this work demonstrates a new approach for color display with negligible solar radiation absorption and paves the way for prominent radiative cooling.

Photochromic polymer is defined as a series of materials based on photochromic units in polymer chains, which produces reversible color changes under irradiation with a particular wavelength. Currently, as the research progresses, it shows increasing potential applications in various fields, such as anti-counterfeiting, information storage, super-resolution imaging, and logic gates. However, there is a paucity of published reviews on the topic of photochromic polymers. Herein, this review discusses and summarizes the research progress and prospects of such materials, mainly summarizing the basic mechanisms, classification, and applications of azobenzene, spiropyran, and diarylethene photochromic polymers. Moreover, 3-dimensional (3D) printable photochromic polymers are worthy to be summarized specifically because of its innovative approach for practical application; meanwhile, the developing 3D printing technology has shown increasing potential opportunities for better applications. Finally, the current challenges and future directions of photochromic polymer materials are summarized.

Cigarettes contain various chemicals that cause damage to nerve cells. Exposure to cigarette smoke (CS) causes insulin resistance (IR) in nerve cells. However, the mechanisms for a disorder in the cigarette-induced insulin signaling pathway and in neurotoxicity remain unclear. Therefore, we evaluated, by a series of pathology analyses and behavioral tests, the neurotoxic effects of chronic exposure to CS on C57BL/6 mice. Mice exposed to CS with more than 200 mg/m3 total particulate matter (TPM) exhibited memory deficits and cognitive impairment. Pathological staining of paraffin sections of mouse brain tissue revealed that CS-exposed mice had, in the brain, neuronal damage characterized by thinner pyramidal and granular cell layers and fewer neurons. Further, the exposure of SH-SY5Y cells to cigarette smoke extract (CSE) resulted in diminished insulin sensitivity and reduced glucose uptake in a dose-dependent fashion. The PI3K/GSK3 insulin signaling pathway is particularly relevant to neurotoxicity. microRNAs are involved in the PI3K/GSK3β/p-Tau pathway, and we found that cigarette exposure activates miR-153-3p, decreases PI3K regulatory subunits PIK3R1, and induces Tau hyperphosphorylation. Exposure to an miR-153 inhibitor or to a PI3K inhibitor alleviated the reduced insulin sensitivity caused by CS. Therefore, our results indicate that miR-153-3p, via PIK3R1, causes insulin resistance in the brain, and is involved in CS-induced neurotoxicity.

Photodeformable polymer materials have a far influence in the fields of flexibility and intelligence. The stimulation energy is converted into mechanical energy through molecular synergy. Among kinds of photodeformable polymer materials, liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) photodeformable materials have been a hot topic in recent years. Chromophores such as azobenzene, α-cyanostilbene, and 9,10-dithiopheneanthracene have been widely used in LCP, which are helpful for designing functional molecules to increase the penetration depth of light to change physical properties. Due to the various applications of photodeformable polymer materials, there are many excellent reports in intelligent field. In this review, we have systematized LCP containing azobenzene into 3 categories depending on the degree of crosslinking liquid crystalline elastomers, liquid crystalline networks, and linear LCPs. Other structural, typical polymer materials and their applications are discussed. Current issues faced and future directions to be developed for photodeformable polymer materials are also summarized.

It is difficult to treat malignant melanoma because of its high malignancy. New and effective therapies for treating malignant melanoma are urgently needed. Ergosterols are known for specific biological activities and have received widespread attention in cancer therapy. Here, LH-1, a kind of ergosterol from the secondary metabolites of the marine fungus Pestalotiopsis sp., was extracted, isolated, purified, and further investigated the biological activities against melanoma. In vitro experiments, the anti-proliferation effect on tumor cells was detected by MTT and colony formation assay, and the anti-metastatic effect on tumor cells was investigated by wound healing assay and transwell assay. Subcutaneous xenograft models, histopathology, and immunohistochemistry have been used to verify the anti-tumor, toxic, and side effect in vivo. Besides, the anti-tumor mechanism of LH-1 was studied by mRNA sequencing. In vitro, LH-1 could inhibit the proliferation and migration of melanoma cells A375 and B16-F10 in a dose-dependent manner and promote tumor cell apoptosis through the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway. In vivo assays confirmed that LH-1 could suppress melanoma growth by inducing cell apoptosis and reducing cell proliferation, and it did not have any notable toxic effects on normal tissues. LH-1 may play an anti-melanoma role by upregulating OBSCN gene expression. These findings suggest that LH-1 may be a potential for the treatment of melanoma.

Though high efficiency has been realized for ultralong organic phosphorescence (UOP) materials, realizing wide ranging and tunable lifetime in these materials remains a challenge. Here, the authors report a multi-host/guest UOP system with wide-ranging tunable lifetime via changing the host matrix.

Wavelength‐selective light trapping has been widely applied in fields such as energy utilization, optical sensing, optical imaging, and so forth. Though metasurfaces have exhibited to efficiently trap the light for diverse optical responses with specific configurations, the manufacturing costs and processing precision both limit the extensive applications. Here, a compact optical coating to trap light either at a single wavelength or across a broadband within a nanometer‐thick single‐layer metallic coating based on mirror|phase tuning layer|absorptive (MPA) and MPA|anti‐reflection coating stacks is proposed. The intermediate phase‐tuning dielectric provides a specific phase shift for the cavity to achieve destructive or constructive interference for ≈100% absorption or reflection correspondingly by switching from ultrahigh‐index dielectric behavior to epsilon‐near‐zero material behavior. And the additional dielectric is introduced to reduce the increasing reflection for the final broadband absorption with a thicker absorptive metal. Furthermore, the efficient color‐preserving solar–thermal conversion based on this compact coating (4‐layer) with the entire thickness of ≈300 nm is demosntrated experimentally. Various perceived colors are produced by simply changing the thickness of the top dielectric layer with the efficient solar–thermal conversion remained, verified by the temperature difference between the fabricated device and the dye‐based plastic exceeding 13 °C with the solar irradiance ≈850 W m−2.

The microbiome exerts profound effects on fetal development and health, yet the mechanisms underlying remain elusive. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) plays important roles in developmental regulation. Although it has been shown that the microbiome affects the mRNA m6A modification of the host, it remains unclear whether the maternal microbiome affects m6A epitranscriptome of the fetus so as to impact fetal development. Here, we found that loss of the maternal microbiome altered the expression of m6A writers and erasers, as well as the m6A methylome of the mouse fetal brain and intestine on embryonic day 18. From the m6A profiles, we identified 2,655 and 2,252 m6A modifications regulated by the maternal microbiome in the fetal brain and intestine, respectively, and we demonstrated that these m6A-modified genes were enriched in the neuro/intestinal developmental pathways, such as the Wnt signaling pathway. Finally, we verified that antibiotic treatment mostly recapitulated changes in m6A, and we further showed that the loss of heterozygosity of Mettl3 rescued m6A levels and the expression changes of some developmental genes in the fetal intestine that resulted from antibiotic treatment. Collectively, our data revealed that the maternal microbiome programs the m6A epitranscriptome of the mouse fetal brain and intestine.

Abstract To investigate the relationship between geometrical changes of retinal vessels and diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), and to determine the effectiveness of retinal vascular geometry analysis and vibration perception threshold (VPT) for DPN assessment. Type 2 diabetes patients (n = 242) were categorized by stage of DPN. VPT and fundus photography was performed to obtain retinal vascular geometry parameters. The risk factors for DPN and the correlation between DPN stages were analyzed. The efficiency of the retinal vascular geometric parameters obtained with VPT as a diagnostic tool for DPN was examined. Stages of DPN showed a linear correlation with VPT (r = 0.818), central retinal vein equivalent (CRVE) (r = 0.716), and fractal dimension arterioles (DFa) (r = − 0.769). VPT, CRVE, DFa, and fractal dimension veins (DFv) showed high sensitivity (80%, 55%, 82%, and 67%, respectively) and specificity (92%, 93%, 82%, and 80%, respectively) for DPN diagnosis. Good agreement was observed between combined use of geometric parameters (CRVE, DFa and DFv) and VPT (Kappa value 0.430). The detection rate of DPN with combined use of geometric parameters of retinal vessels (64.88%) was significantly higher than that with use of VPT (47.52%). Retinal vascular geometry changes demonstrated significant correlation with DPN severity. VPT, CRVE, DFa, and DFv may provide insights for understanding DPN.

The beam splitter is one of the basic optical components. Traditional beam splitters use bulky cubes or plates to realize beam splitting and thereby can hardly be used in a compact optical system. Recently, the beam splitter based on phase gradient metasurfaces has been proposed to split beam with a compact size. However, it is facing challenges on the efficiency and manufacturability. Herein, a beam splitter based on single‐sized flat dielectric metagrating for arbitrary polarizations is proposed. The diffraction efficiency of the fabricated beam splitter reaches as high as 80% for both TM and TE polarizations at peak wavelength. Moreover, it has a broad working wavelength range (455–550 nm) at visible wavelength where the diffraction efficiency is much higher than 60%. Apart from the broadband and high diffraction efficiency, the steering angle can be simply adjusted by varying the periodicity. Splitting light with a flat metagrating enriches the field of flat photonics, opening up new possibilities in applications such as augment reality displays, imaging systems, compact spectrometers, and lidars.

The increased drug resistance and metastasis of melanoma resulted in poor prognosis of patients. Here, we designed and synthesized a novel hemicyanine-based fluorescent probe ZWZ-3, and investigated its application for melanoma imaging and treatment both in vitro and in vivo. ZWZ-3 preferentially accumulated in melanoma cells via a process that depended on the organic anion-transporting polypeptide (OATP), which targeted mitochondria on the hemicyanine cationic nitrogen. In addition, we investigated the effect and molecular mechanism of ZWZ-3 in melanoma. In vitro studies showed that ZWZ-3 promoted the generation of reactive oxygen species and induced mitochondrial-mediated cell apoptosis by upregulating Bax and activating caspase-3, caspase-9, and PARP. Importantly, ZWZ-3 also induced autophagy by upregulating LC-3II and Atg5 and downregulating P62. It significantly suppressed tumor growth of A375 xenograft tumor in mice without notable side effects. Histological and immunohistochemical analyses revealed that ZWZ-3 induced apoptosis and inhibited tumor cell proliferation. Thus, ZWZ-3 represents a novel theranostic agent that can be used to effectively targeting, detecting, and treating melanoma. It could also help monitoring disease progression and response to treatment.

Abstract Background Ubiquitously distributed benzene is a known hematotoxin. Increasing evidence has suggested that erythroid-related hematologic parameters may be sensitive to benzene exposure. Fat content, which is also closely associated with erythroid-related hematologic parameters, may affect the distribution and/or metabolism of benzene, and eventually benzene-induced toxicity. Methods To explore the influence of benzene exposure, fat content, and their interactions on erythroid-related hematologic parameters, we recruited 1669 petrochemical workers and measured their urinary S-phenylmercapturic acid (SPMA) concentration and erythroid-related hematological parameters. Indices for fat content included body fat percentage (BF%), plasma total cholesterol (TC) and triglycerides (TG), and occurrence of fatty liver. Photoresponsive materials have been widely used in sensing, bioimaging, molecular switches, information storage, and encryption nowadays. Although a large amount of photoresponsive materials have been reported, the construction of these smart materials into precisely prescribed complex 3D geometries is rarely studied. Here we designed a novel photoresponsive material methyl methacrylate containing triphenylethylene (TrPEF2-MA) that can be directly used for digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing. Based on TrPEF2-MA, a series of photoresponsive 3D structures with reversible color switching under ultraviolet/visible light irradiations were fabricated. These complex photoresponsive 3D structures show high resolutions (50 μm), excellent repeatability (25 cycles without fatigue), and tunable saturate color degrees. Multicomponent DLP 3D printing processes were also carried out to demonstrate their great properties in information hiding and information-carrying properties. This design strategy for constructing photoresponsive 3D structures is attractive in the area of adaptive camouflage, information hiding, information storage, and flexible electronics.

Malignant melanoma is the most fatal form of skin cancer worldwide, and earlier diagnosis and more effective therapies are required to improve prognosis. As a possible solution, near-infrared fluorescent heptamethine cyanine dyes have been shown to be useful for tumor diagnosis and treatment. Here, we synthesized a novel theranostic agent, IR-817, a multifunctional bioactive small-molecule that has near-infrared emission, targets mitochondria in cancer cells, and has selective anti-cancer effects. In in vitro experiments, IR-817 preferentially accumulated in melanoma cells through organic anion transporting polypeptide transporters but also selectively inhibited the growth of tumor cells by inducing mitochondrial-dependent intrinsic apoptosis. Mechanistically, IR-817 caused G0/G1 cell cycle arrest by targeting the E2F/Cyclin/CDK pathway. Finally, IR-817 significantly suppressed the growth of xenograft tumors in zebrafish and mice. Immunohistochemical staining and hematoxylin and eosin staining revealed that IR-817 induced apoptosis and inhibited tumor cell proliferation without notable side effects. Therefore, mitochondrial-targeting theranostic agent IR-817 may be promising for accurate tumor diagnosis, real-time monitoring, and safe anti-cancer treatments.

In this work, a new series of 2-hydroxybenzophenone (BPOH) derivatives, BPOH-TPA, BPOH-PhCz, and BPOH-SF substituting with different electron-donating groups are designed and synthesized. Dual-emission spectra are observed in solutions indicating their excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) character. In solid states, all compounds exhibit a broad emission spectrum when excited at low excitation energy, deriving from the enol-type form stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonds. Compound BPOH-TPA shows a clear excitation wavelength dependence. However, such behavior is absent in BPOH-PhCz and BPOH-SF, as the rigid and weaker donor moieties may restrict this process. Furthermore, by increasing the excitation energy, dual emission with a high-energy band ranging from 550 to 582 nm and a low-energy band ranging from 625 to 638 nm is obtained in all three molecules. The photophysical studies and single-crystal analyses are performed to further illustrate the excitation-dependent emission. Higher excitation energies can promote more excitons to keto forms via ESIPT, giving a stronger redshifted emission. BPOH-TPA with a stronger donor strength exhibits an obvious color change gradually from yellow to orange-red with the increasing excitation power from 1 to 15 mW/cm2. This study provides a novel example of ESIPT materials with tunable emission colors.

A forest fire is a natural disaster that destroys forest resources, thus having a severe impact on humans and on the animals and plants that depend on the forest environment. This paper presents a model for predicting the scale of forest wildfires of Alberta, Canada. A fire's scale is determined by the combination of the fire's duration and the size of the area it burns. Our prediction model enables fire rescuers to take appropriate measures to minimize damage caused by a wildfire based on its predicted scale in the fire's early stages. The modeling data were collected from the Canada National Fire Database (CNFDB) published by Natural Resources Canada, which includes wildfire and meteorological data for Alberta, Canada. The size of the burned area and the fire's duration were used to estimate the scale of a wildfire. After multi-collinearity testing and feature normalization, the data were divided into training and testing sets. Taking the meteorological factors as input values, a backpropagation neural network (BPNN), a recurrent neural network (RNN), and long short-term memory (LSTM) were implemented to establish prediction models. Of these classification methods, LSTM exhibited the highest accuracy, 90.9%. The results indicate that it is feasible to predict the scale of a forest wildfire at the beginning of its occurrence using meteorological information.

Photodeformable materials are a class of molecules that can convert photon energy into mechanical energy, which have attracted tremendous attention in the last few decades. Owing to their unique photoinduced deformable properties, including fast light-response and diverse mechanical behaviors, photodeformable materials have exhibited great potential in many practical applications such as actuators, photoswitches, artificial muscles, and bioimaging. In this review, we sort out the current state of photodeformable crystals and classify them into six categories by molecular structures: diarylethenes, azobenzenes, anthracenes, olefins, triarylethylenes, and other systems. Three distinct light-responsive mechanisms, photocyclization, trans-cis isomerization, and photodimerization, are revealed to play significant roles in the molecular photodeformation. Their corresponding photodeformable behaviors such as twisting, bending, hopping, bursting, and curling, as well as the potential applications, are also discussed. Furthermore, the challenges and prospective development directions of photodeformable crystals are highlighted.

Current treatment of advanced-stage nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is not satisfactory. Here, we developed a folic acid (FA) modified, gefitinib (GEF) and yttrium 90 (Y90) co-loaded, core-shell structured lipid-polymer hybrid nanoparticles (FA-GEF-Y90-LPNP). The size and zeta potential, drug release behavior, and uptake by tumor cells were investigated. The antitumor efficiency and toxicity of LPNP were evaluated in cancer cells and in tumor bearing mice. FA-GEF-Y90-LPNP with a mean size of 150 nm and zeta potential of −40 mV was able to enhance the accumulation in the NPC cells and exhibited the highest cytotoxicity. The AUC and T1/2 of FA-GEF-Y90-LPNP group was 217.62 ± 10.32 mg/L.h and 12.09 ± 0.43 h, respectively. FA-GEF-Y90-LPNP exhibited the best in vivo tumor inhibition ability, leading to a 221.2 ± 13.5 mm3 of tumor volume at day 21. FA-GEF-Y90-LPNP treatment resulted in almost no difference in the body weight. This may be the evidence that the systemic toxicity of FA-GEF-Y90-LPNP is low and may be used as safety system for the treatment of NPC.

The US drought monitor (USDM) has been widely used as an observational reference for evaluating land surface model (LSM) simulation of drought. This study investigates potential caveats in such evaluation when the USDM and LSMs use different base periods and drought indices to identify drought. The retrospective national water model (NWM) v2.0 simulation (1993–2018) was used to exemplify the evaluation, supplemented by North American land data assimilation system phase 2 (NLDAS-2). The Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) project provides observations of Earth’s radiation budget using measurements from CERES instruments on board the Terra, Aqua, Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP), and NOAA-20 satellites. The CERES top-of-atmosphere (TOA) fluxes are produced by converting radiance measurements using empirical angular distribution models, which are functions of cloud properties that are retrieved from imagers flying with the CERES instruments. As the objective is to create a long-term climate data record, not only calibration consistency of the six CERES instruments needs to be maintained for the entire time period, it is also important to maintain the consistency of other input data sets used to produce this climate data record. In this paper, we address aspects that could potentially affect the CERES TOA flux data quality. Discontinuities in imager calibration can affect cloud retrieval which can lead to erroneous flux trends. When imposing an artificial 0.6 per decade decreasing trend to cloud optical depth, which is similar to the trend difference between CERES Edition 2 and Edition 4 cloud retrievals, the decadal SW flux trend changed from − 0.3 5 ± 0.18 Wm − 2 to 0.61 ± 0.18 Wm − 2 . This indicates that a 13% change in cloud optical depth results in about 1% change in the SW flux. Furthermore, different CERES instruments provide valid fluxes at different viewing zenith angle ranges, and including fluxes derived at the most oblique angels unique to S-NPP (>66 ∘ ) can lead to differences of 0.8 Wm − 2 and 0.3 Wm − 2 in global monthly mean instantaneous SW flux and LW flux. To ensure continuity, the viewing zenith angle ranges common to all CERES instruments ( ∘ ) are used to produce the long-term Earth’s radiation budget climate data record. The consistency of cloud properties retrieved from different imagers also needs to be maintained to ensure the TOA flux consistency.

In this study, a novel chlorimuron-ethyl-degrading Pleurotus eryngiu-SMS-CB was successfully constructed for remediation of soil historically contaminated with chlorimuron-ethyl. The P. eryngiu-SMS-CB was prepared using efficient chlorimuron-ethyl-degrading cocultured bacteria, Rhodococcus sp. D310-1 and Enterobacter sp. D310-5, with spent mushroom substrate (SMS, a type of agricultural waste containing laccase) of Pleurotus eryngiu as a carrier. The chlorimuron-ethyl degradation efficiency in historically chlorimuron-ethyl-contaminated soil reached 93.1% at the end of 80 days of treatment with the P. eryngiu-SMS-CB. Although the P. eryngiu-SMS-CB altered the microbial community structure at the beginning of the 80 days, the bacterial population slowly recovered after 180 days; thus, the P. eryngiu-SMS-CB does not have an excessive effect on the long-term microbial community structure of the soil. Pot experiments indicated that contaminated soil remediation with P. eryngiu-SMS-CB reduced the toxic effects of chlorimuron-ethyl on wheat. This paper is the first to attempt to use chlorimuron-ethyl-degrading bacterial strains adhering to P. eryngiu-SMS to remediate historically chlorimuron-ethyl-contaminated soil, and the microbial community structure and P. eryngiu-SMS-CB activity in chlorimuron-ethyl-contaminated soil were traced in situ to evaluate the long-term effects of this remediation.

As an allotetraploid oilcrop, Brassica napus contains four duplicated Acyl-CoA:diacylglycerol acyltransferase 1 (DGAT1) genes, which catalyze one of the rate-limiting steps in triacylglycerol (TAG) biosynthesis in plants. While all four BnDGAT1s have been expressed functionally in yeast, their expression patterns in different germplasms and tissues and also consequent contribution to seed oil accumulation in planta remain to be elucidated. In this study, the coding regions of the four BnDGAT1s were expressed in an Arabidopsis dgat1 mutant. All four BnDGAT1s showed similar effects on oil content and fatty acid composition, a result which is different from that observed in previous studies of their expression in yeast. Expression patterns of BnDGAT1s were analyzed in developing seeds of 34 B. napus inbred lines and in different tissues of 14 lines. Different expression patterns were observed for the four BnDGAT1s, which suggests that they express independently or randomly in different germplasm sources. Higher expression of BnDGAT1s was correlated with higher seed oil content lines. Tissue-specific analyses showed that the BnDGAT1s were expressed in a uniform pattern in different tissues. Our results suggest that it is important to maintain expression of the four BnDGAT1s for maximum return on oil content.

This study examines changes in Earth’s energy budget during and after the global warming “pause” (or “hiatus”) using observations from the Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System. We find a marked 0.83 ± 0.41 Wm−2 reduction in global mean reflected shortwave (SW) top-of-atmosphere (TOA) flux during the three years following the hiatus that results in an increase in net energy into the climate system. A partial radiative perturbation analysis reveals that decreases in low cloud cover are the primary driver of the decrease in SW TOA flux. The regional distribution of the SW TOA flux changes associated with the decreases in low cloud cover closely matches that of sea-surface temperature warming, which shows a pattern typical of the positive phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. Large reductions in clear-sky SW TOA flux are also found over much of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans in the northern hemisphere. These are associated with a reduction in aerosol optical depth consistent with stricter pollution controls in China and North America. A simple energy budget framework is used to show that TOA radiation (particularly in the SW) likely played a dominant role in driving the marked increase in temperature tendency during the post-hiatus period.

Quinoxaline 1, 4-dioxides (QdNOs) has been used in animals as antimicrobial agents and growth promoters for decades. However, the resistance to QdNOs in pathogenic bacteria raises worldwide concern but it is barely known. To explore the molecular mechanism involved in development of QdNOs resistance in Escherichia coli, 6 strains selected by QdNOs in vitro and 21 strains isolated from QdNOs-used swine farm were subjected to MIC determination and PCR amplification of oqxA gene. A conjugative transfer was carried out to evaluate the transfer risk of QdNOs resistant determinant. Furthermore, the transcriptional profile of a QdNOs-resistant E. coli (79O4-2) selected in vitro with its parent strain 79-161 was assayed with a prokaryotic suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) PCR cDNA subtraction. The result showed that more than 95% (20/21) clinical isolates were oqxA positive, while all the 6 induced QdNOs-resistant strains carried no oqxA gene and exhibited low frequency of conjugation. 44 fragments were identified by SSH PCR subtraction in the QdNOs-resistant strain 79O4-2. 18 cDNAs were involved in biosynthesis of Fe-S cluster (narH), protein (rpoA, trmD, truA, glyS, ileS, rplFCX, rpsH, fusA), lipoate (lipA), lipid A (lpxC), trehalose (otsA), CTP(pyrG) and others molecular. The 11 cDNAs were related to metabolism or degradation of glycolysis (gpmA and pgi) and proteins (clpX, clpA, pepN and fkpB). The atpADG and ubiB genes were associated with ATP biosynthesis and electron transport chain. The pathway of the functional genes revealed that E. coli may adapt the stress generated by QdNOs or develop specific QdNOs-resistance by activation of antioxidative agents biosynthesis (lipoate and trehalose), protein biosynthesis, glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation. This study initially reveals the possible molecular mechanism involved in the development of QdNOs-resistance in E. coli, providing with novel insights in prediction and assessment of the emergency and horizontal transfer of QdNOs-resistance in E. coli.
