Abstract Ammonia oxidation plays a vital role in regulating soil nitrogen (N) cycle in agricultural soil, which is significantly influenced by different fertilizer regimes. However, there is still need to further investigate the effects of different fertilizer managements on rhizosphere soil ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB) community in the double-cropping rice field. Therefore, the effects of different long-term (37 years) fertilizer managements on rhizosphere soil potential nitrification activity (PNA), AOA and AOB community structure, and its relationship under the double-cropping rice system in southern of China were studied in the present paper. The field experiment included without fertilizer input as a control (CK), inorganic fertilizer (MF), rice straw and inorganic fertilizer (RF), 30% organic manure and 70% inorganic fertilizer (OM). This result indicated that rhizosphere soil organic carbon (SOC) (SOC), total N and ammonium N (NH4 +-N) contents in paddy field with RF and OM treatments were increased. Rhizosphere soil PNA, potential nitrification rate (PNR) and abundance of AOB in paddy field with MF treatment were increased, and abundance of AOA in paddy field with RF and OM treatments were increased, respectively. The result also showed that rhizosphere soil diversity index of AOA and AOB with RF and OM treatments were enhanced, compared with CK treatment. Rhizosphere soil AOB and AOA community composition was dominated by Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Acidobacteria with all fertilizer treatments. There had significantly positively correlation between the abundance of AOA and SOC, total N, and NH4-N contents. However, there had significantly negatively correlation between soil pH and abundance of AOA, soil PNA, PNR. As a result, long-term application of rice straw and organic manure was benefit for increasing community structure of rhizosphere soil ammonia oxidizer under the double-cropping rice system in southern of China.

Abstract Soil organic carbon (SOC) plays a vital role in maintaining or enhancing soil fertility and quality of paddy field, but there is still limited information about how SOC mineralization responds to different tillage managements under the double-cropping rice (Oryza sativa L.) system in southern of China. Therefore, this study was designed to explore the changes in SOC content, soil enzyme activities (invertase, cellulose and urease), SOC mineralization at 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm layers and its relationship with 7-years tillage management under the double-cropping rice system of southern China. The experiment included four tillage managements: rotary tillage with all residues removed as a control (RTO), conventional tillage with residue incorporation (CT), rotary tillage with residue incorporation (RT), and no-tillage with residue retention (NT). The results indicated that SOC and soil labile organic carbon contents at 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm layers in paddy field with CT and RT treatments were significantly higher than the RTO treatment. Compared to the RTO treatment, SOC mineralization and accumulation at 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm layers in paddy field with CT, RT and NT treatments were increased. SOC accumulation and potential mineralization at 0–10 cm layer with NT treatment were significantly higher than the CT, RT and RTO treatments. Soil mineralization constant at 10–20 cm layer with CT treatment was significantly higher than those of RT, NT and RTO treatments. This result indicated SOC mineralization rate and accumulation at 10–20 cm layer of CT, RT, NT and RTO treatments were lower than those of treatments at 0–10 cm layer. Compared to RTO treatment, soil invertase, cellulose and urease activities with CT and RT treatments were significantly increased. Compared to RTO treatment, soil invertase, cellulose and urease activities at 0–20 cm layer of CT treatment increased by 22.6%, 46.2% and 89.0%, respectively. There was significantly positive correlation between SOC accumulation and SOC content, soil invertase, cellulose, urease activities, but SOC accumulation was significantly negative correlated with soil pH, bulk density. Therefore, CT and RT treatments were beneficial managements to improve SOC content and SOC mineralization in the double-cropping rice field of southern China.

In this study, we aimed to investigate the mechanism by which fluoride exposure causes bone damage and the relationship with the loss of dorsal longitudinal anastomotic vessel (DLAV) formation in zebrafish larvae to further understanding of skeletal fluorosis. We assessed the development of chondrogenesis, osteogenesis, and DLAV angiogenesis, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in zebrafish larvae subjected to blank control group (Con), low-fluoride group (LF), and high-fluoride group (HF). Abnormal development of the cartilage area, bone mineralization accompanied with abnormal mRNA expression of osteoblast-related OC, ALP, and Runx2b genes and osteoclast-related OPG and RANKL genes, and abnormal DLAV angiogenesis and ROS levels in zebrafish larvae were affected to varying degrees with the increase of fluoride exposure. We concluded that exposure of zebrafish embryos to fluoride can affect bone development process of chondrogenesis and osteogenesis, and that bone damage might be related to the loss of DLAV angiogenesis.

Unreasonable soil tillage measures have caused a sharp decline in the soil carbon (C) pool capacity of rice (Oryza sativa L.) paddy fields, have reduced soil fertility, and have threatened the safe production of rice. Based on long-term position–location experiments started in 2005, this paper systematically studied the effects of different soil tillage treatments (CT: no return of plowing straw to the field as control; CTS: return of plowing straw to the field; NTS: return of no-tillage straw to the field; RTS: return of rotary plowing straw to the field) on soil physical and chemical properties and soil organic carbon (SOC) accumulation characteristics in rice paddy fields, in order to clarify the impact of different long-term soil tillage measures on soil carbon cycle microecology in double-cropped rice paddy fields and provide a theoretical basis for soil SOC sequestration and the sustainable utilization of rice paddy fields in double-cropped rice paddy fields in southern China. The results were as follows: A total of 30.7–40.7% of the SOC stored in rice paddy fields was residue C derived from microorganisms, and 45.7–54.2% of SOC accumulation came from plant residue-derived C. Straw return treatments (CTS, RTS, and NTS) significantly increased soil lignin phenol content and promoted the accumulation of plant-derived SOC. Soil lignin phenol content in the RTS treatment was significantly higher than that in the CTS treatment (p < 0.05). Amino sugar content in rhizosphere soil was higher than that in non-rhizosphere soil. The measure of returning straw to the field increased amino sugar content in the rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere. C derived from plants was greater than that from microbial residues in double-cropped rice paddy fields in southern China. Hence, no-till/rotary tillage and straw return can improve the sequestration of soil SOC, which is of great significance for achieving “C neutrality” and alleviating the pressure on food security.

Claudin-4 is a key component of tight junctions, which play an important role in the formation of the epidermal barrier by forming a circumferential network in the granular layer that serves as a gatekeeper of the paracellular pathway. The aim of this study is to illustrate claudin-4 immunohistochemical staining patterns of different blistering disorders. We collected 35 cases, including two Hailey–Hailey disease, one Darier disease, three Grover disease, one acantholytic acanthoma, two warty dyskeratoma, 11 pemphigus vulgaris (PV) including six mucosal PV, and two pemphigus foliaceus. For comparison, we included five cases of normal skin, five eczema, and three bullous pemphigoid cases. Claudin-4 demonstrated weak-to-moderate expression in keratinocytes located in the stratum granulosum, keratinocytes surrounding hair follicles, and adnexal glands. Further, claudin-4 exhibited moderate-to-strong membranous staining in disrupted keratinocytes surrounding and within the acantholytic and bullous areas in 16/22 of the acantholytic cases (not seen in the six cases of mucosal PV) and all three bullous pemphigoids. This finding suggests that claudin-4 is upregulated in these conditions, which may be a compensatory response to the disrupted barrier function. This finding could shed light on the molecular mechanisms underlying disrupted barrier function in blistering disorders, independent of the specific underlying disease mechanism.

Programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) plays a pivotal role in immune system regulation, with its expression levels linked to malignancy prognosis. However, existing reports on PD-1 staining in mycosis fungoides (MF) present conflicting findings, and little attention has been given to PD-1 staining in different MF variants. To address this, we conducted a retrospective study, employing immunohistochemistry to examine PD-1 expression in cases of folliculotropic MF and non-folliculotropic MF. We analyzed 24 cases of folliculotropic MF and 18 cases of non-folliculotropic MF, and recorded both the percentage of PD-1-labeled tumor cells and the intensity score (negative, weak, medium, or strong). Our results revealed significant disparity in PD-1 labeling between patch/plaque MF and folliculotropic MF (p = 0.028). Non-folliculotropic MF exhibited higher PD-1 labeling in tumor cells (58.3%) compared to folliculotropic MF (40.2%). Notably, there was no significant difference in PD-1 staining between folliculotropic MF and non-folliculotropic MF when both were in the early stage/indolent disease category. However, when considering the tumor stage, folliculotropic MF exhibited PD-1 staining in tumor cells at a rate of 21.1%, while non-folliculotropic MF showed PD-1 staining in tumor cells at a rate of 46.6% (p = 0.005). Additionally, among folliculotropic MF cases, 13 out of 24 cases displayed differing PD-1 expression patterns between epidermal and dermal components, with preserved PD-1 staining in the epidermal component and loss of staining in the dermal component. Furthermore, consistent with the prior literature, tumor cells with large cell transformations exhibited significantly lower PD-1 labeling (p = 0.017). Our findings showcase the unique PD-1 staining patterns in MF.

Abstract Cropland conversion has a major impact on soil C sequestration. However, it remains unclear about the changes in soil aggregate and their contribution to C accumulation following cropland conversion in a karst region, southwest China. In this study, three different cropland use types (sugarcane, mulberry and forage grass cultivation) were selected to replace maize-soybean cultivation. The soil was collected at a depth of 0 to 30 cm for analysis of soil aggregates and their OC content. Results showed that macro-aggregate was the predominant component underlying four cropland use types. Forage grass cultivation remarkably increased the OC stock and aggregate stability (MWD and GMD). OC content and stock associated with aggregate varied with cropland use types and soil depth, but were typically highest in forage grass fields. Macro-aggregates contained higher OC content and stock than other aggregate fractions, along with soil depth underlying four cropland use types. The increases in OC stock in forage grass field was mainly due to increased OC stocks within macro-aggregates, which is further attributed to the increase in OC content within macro-aggregates. Overall, forage grass cultivation replaced maize-soybean cultivation was suggested as an ecological restoration model to enhance soil C sequestration potential, owing to its role in increasing OC stock of aggregation and aggregate stability, in the karst region of southwest China.

Background: Retesting for Human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2) in post-neoadjuvant therapy resection is variable, and data is conflicting regarding the prognostic significance of changes in HER2 expression pre and post therapy. Methods: We identified 104 patients with localized HER2 IHC 3+ breast cancer who received neoadjuvant trastuzumab(T)/pertuzumab(P) containing chemotherapy at Yale Cancer Center between 2012 and 2022. Patients were divided into 3 cohorts by response and HER2 IHC in the residual disease: Cohort 1 pathologic complete response (pCR), Cohort 2 pre-treatment IHC 3+/post treatment IHC 1+/2+, and Cohort 3 pre-treatment IHC 3+/post-treatment IHC 3+. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was performed to assess recurrence free survival at 36 months. Results: The overall pCR rate was 62.5% (65/104), while 37.5% (39/104) of patients had residual disease (RD). Among patients with RD, 58.9% (23/39) remained IHC 3+ and 41.1% (16/39) had reduced HER2 expression IHC1+ or 2+. In patients with HER2 IHC 3+ RD, 26% (6/23) developed local recurrence or distant metastasis while none of patients with post NAT HER2 IHC 1+ or 2+ RD had relapse (p = 0.0309). In patients with pCR, 6.15% (4/65) had recurrence. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis revealed superior disease-free survival in patients with reduced HER2 IHC expression compared to those with remained IHC 3+ (log rank p = 0.004). Conclusion: We conclude that reduced HER2 expression by IHC following neoadjuvant treatment was associated with lower recurrence rates in HER2 IHC 3+ breast cancer. If confirmed, RD HER2 IHC expression could be used as a prognostic biomarker to stratify patients in adjuvant trials and identify patients who may benefit from more intensive adjuvant therapy and post therapy surveillance.

Lilium growth is severely impeded by continuous cropping, and crop rotation is essential to reducing the detrimental effects of monocultures. Soil (0–20 cm) was collected in three Lilium cropping patterns in Longshan County, Hunan Province, including continuous Lilium cropping (Lilium), corn upland rotation with Lilium (Corn), and paddy rotation with Lilium (Rice). Using Illumina high-throughput sequencing technology, the fungal ribosomal DNA internal-transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) was examined to evaluate the features of soil fungi communities among three cropping patterns. Crop rotation has an impact on soil properties and the microbial community. Rice soil has a significantly higher pH than Lilium and corn soil, while corn and rice soil have a greater total nitrogen and total phosphorus content than Lilium soil. Rotation cropping clearly shifted the fungi community diversity based on the results of principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) and nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS). Ascomycota was the most prevalent phylum, with the highest levels in Lilium soil. Genetic analysis revealed that paddy rotation led to a clear reduction in or non-detection of eight potentially pathogenic fungal genera and a noticeable accumulation of eight beneficial fungal genera compared to Lilium continuous cropping. Fungi communities and their abundant taxa were correlated with soil pH and nutrients. Altogether, we propose that rice rotation, with its ability to mitigate soil acidification, reducing pathogenic and accumulating beneficial communities, may be an effective strategy for alleviating the continuous cropping barrier.

The variety of soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC), soil microbial biomass nitrogen (SMBN) content, and the flux turnover rate of SMBC and SMBN for 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm layers in a paddy field in southern China with different tillage practices were studied. The tillage experiment included conventional tillage and crop residue returning (CT), rotary tillage and crop residue returning (RT), no–tillage and crop residue returning (NT), and rotary tillage with all crop residues removed from the paddy field as a control (RTO). The result showed that the SMBC and SMBN contents at 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm layers in the paddy field with CT, RT, and NT treatments were significantly increased. This result indicates that the flux turnover rate of SMBC and SMBN for 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm layers in the paddy field with CT treatment were increased by 65.49%, 39.61%, and 114.91%, 119.35%, compared with the RTO treatment, respectively. SMBC and SMBN contents and the flux turnover rate of SMBC and SMBN for the 0–10 cm layer were higher than that of the 10–20 cm layer in paddy fields under the same tillage condition. Therefore, applying rotary tillage or conventional tillage and crop residue returning produced beneficial management for increasing soil microbial biomass content and its turnover under a double–cropping rice system in southern China.

Abstract Soil microbial community were usually reconsidered as a sensitive indicator in soil quality and soil environment change of paddy field. However, the effects of different tillage and crop residue incorporation managements on soil bacterial community under the double-cropping rice cropping system were still need to further investigated. Therefore, the impacts of different tillage and crop residue incorporation managements on soil bacterial community under the double-cropping rice cropping system in southern of China were studied by using phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) profile method in the present paper. The experiment included four different tillage treatments: rotary tillage without crop residue input as a control (RTO), no-tillage with crop residue retention (NT), rotary tillage with crop residue incorporation (RT), and conventional tillage with crop residue incorporation (CT). Compared with RTO treatment, grain yield of rice with NT, RT and CT treatments increased by 1.21%, 3.13% and 6.40%, respectively. This results showed that soil aC15:0, C16:0, iC17:0, C19:0c9, 10 fatty acids with CT and RT treatments were higher than that of RTO treatment, while soil C16:1ω6c and C18:1ω9t fatty acids with NT treatment were higher than that of RTO treatment, respectively. Soil G+ and G− bacteria PLFAs contents with CT treatment were higher than that of NT, RT and RTO treatments, while the value of soil G+/G− bacteria PLFAs with NT treatment were higher than that of CT, RT and RTO treatments. This results indicated that Richness and McIntosh indices with CT treatment were significantly higher than that of RTO treatment. Principal component analysis (PCA) results showed that the first and second principal components (PC1 and PC2) were explained 93.2% of total variance with all tillage treatments. Except C12:0, C14:0 2OH and C18:2ω6, all unsaturated and cyclopropyl PLFAs contents were belong to PC1. PC1 and PC2 were explained 88.4% of total variance with all tillage treatments. There had significantly positive correlation between soil Richness, Shannon indices and soil PLFAs, G+ bacteria, G− bacteria, fungi contents. As a result, it were benefit practices for increasing soil bacterial community structure in the double-cropping rice field of southern China by combined application of rotary, conventional tillage with crop residue incorporation managements.

Abstract Cellulose plays an important role in maintaining or improving soil carbon (C) cycling and soil fertility of paddy field. There had close relationship between functional cellulose genes (cbhI and GH48) with characterize of soil organic matter chemical components (fulvic acid and humic acid) and soil physical fractions. However, there is still limited information about how functional cellulose degradation response to long-term fertilizer management and their relative importance for C sequestration under the double-cropping rice paddy field in southern of China. Therefore, the objective of this study were investigated the effects of 34-years long-term fertilizer regime on community abundance of cbhI and GH48 genes in five soil particle-size fractions (> 2000 μm, 2000–200 μm, 200–50 μm, 50–2 μm and 2–0.1 μm) by using polarization magic angle spinning 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The field experiment was included four different fertilizer treatments: chemical fertilizer alone (MF), rice straw and chemical fertilizer (RF), 30% organic manure and 70% chemical fertilizer (OM), and without fertilizer input as a control (CK). The results showed that distribution of soil humus and cellulolytic microbial community abundance was significant increased under long-term application of crop residue and organic manure condition. And the FA, HA and HM C contents in > 2000 μm and 2000–50 μm fractions with MF, RF and OM treatments were significant higher than that of CK treatment. Meanwhile, the alkyl C and Oalkyl C groups of FA and HA in > 2000 μm fraction with MF, RF, OM and CK treatments were higher than that of the other fractions. There had higher AL% and lower ARO% of FA and HA in different particle-size fractions with MF, RF, OM and CK treatments. The results indicated that abundance of cbhI and GH48 genes in different particle-size fractions with RF and OM treatments were significant increased, compared with CK treatment. There had significant positive correlation between soil humus C components (FA and HA) with abundance of cbhI and GH48 genes, and the o-alkyl C and AL% of FA were positively correlated with abundance of cbhI and GH48 genes. As a result, the community abundance of cbhI and GH48 genes were significant increased under combined application of crop residue and organic manure with chemical fertilizer condition.

Abstract Carbon (C) plays an important role in maintaining soil fertility and increasing soil microbial community, but there is still limited information about how source utilization characteristics respond to soil fertility changes under double-cropping rice (Oryza sativa L.) system in southern China paddy field. Therefore, the effects of different short-term (5-years) tillage management on characteristics of C utilization in rice rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils under double-cropping rice field in southern China were investigated by using 18O incorporation into DNA. Therefore, a field experiment were included four tillage treatments: conventional tillage with crop residue incorporation (CT), rotary tillage with crop residue incorporation (RT), no-tillage with crop residue retention (NT), rotary tillage with crop residue removed as control (RTO). The results showed that soil microbial biomass C content with CT, RT, NT treatments were increased by 29.71–47.27% and 3.77–21.30% in rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils, compared with RTO treatment, respectively. Compared with RTO treatment, soil microbial basal respiration and microbial growth rate with CT treatment were increased 30.56%, 30.94% and 11.91%, 12.34% in rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils, respectively. The soil microbial C utilization efficiency were promoted with NT treatment. Compared with RTO treatment, the metabolic capacity of soil microorganism to exogenous C source with CT, RT and NT treatments were increased. The largest type of exogenous C source was saccharides, followed by amino acid and polymers, and complex compounds was the smallest. The redundancy analysis results indicated that tillage treatments significantly changed the utilization characteristics of soil microorganism to exogenous C source. Compared with RTO treatment, the grain yield of early rice and late rice with CT treatment were increased by 409.5 kg ha−1 and 387.0 kg ha−1, respectively. Therefore, the CT and RT treatments could significantly increase soil microbial biomass C content, but the NT treatment promote microbial C utilization efficiency in the double-cropping paddy field of southern China.

Abstract. In traditional teaching, many teachers often ignore the process of students' knowledge exploration, devote themselves to instilling knowledge to students in a short time, and then adopt the sea of questions tactics. Such teaching is only limited to the stage of telling students what "variance" is and how to use it, and ignores the birth process and meaning of "variance". The purpose of this research is to see the differences in classes that use dynamic mathematics software and traditional classes. The method in this research is descriptive qualitative. The sample in this study was seventh-grade students at one of the junior high schools in China. The content of this research design is the use of dynamic mathematics technology, focusing on the understanding of the concept of efficiency-improving variance, and the form innovation of the course design is design and record before and after optimization-evaluation and analysis before and after optimization. This article mainly takes the concept of teaching variance topic as an example to try to explore the teaching design of optimizing the important and difficult points of mathematics. This study shows that Hawgent dynamic mathematics software makes students get deep learning and makes teaching and learning activities more active. Then the teacher can continue to use Hawgent dynamic mathematics software to make students more active. Abstrak. Dalam pengajaran tradisional, banyak guru sering mengabaikan proses eksplorasi pengetahuan siswa, fokus menanamkan pengetahuan kepada siswa dalam waktu singkat, dan kemudian memberi banyak soal untuk diselesaikan. Pengajaran semacam itu hanya sebatas tahap memberi tahu siswa apa itu "varians" dan bagaimana menggunakannya, serta mengabaikan proses penemuan konsep dan makna "varians". Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat perbedaan kelas yang menggunakan dynamic mathematics software dan kelas tradisional. Metode dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas tujuh di salah satu sekolah menengah pertama di China. Desain penelitian ini adalah pemanfaatan teknologi dynamic mathematics software, menitikberatkan pada pemahaman konsep varians, dan inovasi bentuk rancangan penelitian rekam sebelum dan sesudah optimalisasi-evaluasi dan analisis sebelum dan sesudah optimasi. Artikel ini terutama mengambil konsep pengajaran pada bahasan varians sebagai contoh untuk mencoba mengeksplorasi desain pengajaran dalam mengoptimalkan poin-poin matematika yang penting dan sulit. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa dynamic mathematics software Hawgent membuat siswa mendapatkan pembelajaran yang mendalam dan membuat kegiatan belajar mengajar menjadi lebih aktif. Oleh karena itu, guru dapat menggunakan dynamic mathematics software Hawgent untuk membuat siswa lebih aktif.

Abstract Background A selection of haematological and serum biochemical profile was first presented from the 81 samples of Chinese water deer (Hydropotes inermis). The deer health assessment database was initially established, especially in relation to determining potential effects associated with diseases diagnosis. Results Blood samples were analyzed for different haematological parameters viz. white blood cells (WBC), red blood cells (RBC), haemoglobin (HGB), packed-cell volume (PCV), platelet count (PLT), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean red blood cells distribution width coefficient of variation (RDW) and different hematological parameters viz. total protein (TP), albumin (ALB), globulin (GLB), albumin to globulin ratio (A/G), total bilirubin (TBIL), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), AST/ALT, creatinine, urea (BUN), uric acid, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride, creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and cortisol. The adult females had higher values than adult males in albumin, mean corpuscular volume, packed-cell volume, and hemoglobin content values. The deer from Shanghai had higher urea nitrogen values than those from Zhoushan. Conclusion To our knowledge this is the first report about the haematological and serum biochemical parameters in Chinese water deer. We had initially established a profile of Chinese water deer on haematological and serum biochemical parameters based on 81 samples we had collected. The findings can serve as a primary reference for health monitoring and disease prevention in this species.

This study was designed to explore changes in soil bulk density, soil organic carbon content, soil organic carbon stock and soil labile organic carbon fractions under 34 years fertilizer regime in the double-cropping rice system of southern China. The experiment including five fertilizer treatments: chemical fertilizer alone (MF), rice straw residue and chemical fertilizer (RF), 30% organic manure and 70% chemical fertilizer (LOM), 60% organic manure and 40% chemical fertilizer (HOM), and without fertilizer input as control (CK). The results showed that soil bulk density in the 0-20 cm soil layer with long-term fertilizer treatments were significantly decreased compared to CK treatment. The soil organic carbon content and stock with RF, LOM and HOM treatments were significantly higher than that of MF and CK treatments. These results confirmed by the soil carbon management index which were significantly increased with RF, LOM and HOM treatments. As a result, combined application of organic manure with chemical fertilizer is a benefit nutrient management for improving soil organic carbon content and stock, soil carbon management index in paddy field of southern China.

Soil extracellular enzyme activities play an important role in regulating the soil nitrogen (N) mineralization process in paddy fields. However, there is still a need to further study how N mineralization responds to different fertilizer management techniques and the soil extracellular enzyme activities for N mineralization in paddy fields. Therefore, the influence of different long-term (35 years) fertilizer regimes on soil N mineralization, hydrolysable N fractions—such as hydrolyzed unknown nitrogen (HUN), amino acid nitrogen (AAN), amino sugar nitrogen (ASN), ammonia nitrogen (AN), and total acid-hydrolyzed nitrogen (TAN)—and their extracellular enzyme activities (soil urease, L-glutaminase, β-glucosidase, arylamidase, and β-glucosaminidase) in a double-cropping rice field in southern China were investigated in this study. The field experiment included the following fertilizer regimes: rice straw and inorganic fertilizer (RF), 30% organic manure and 70% inorganic fertilizer (OM), inorganic fertilizer alone (MF), and no application of inorganic fertilizer as a control (CK). The results show that the soil ammonium N, amino sugar N, hydrolysable unidentified N, and amino acid N contents in the paddy field with RF treatment increased by 30.56%, 5.51%, and 62.74% compared with the CK treatment. The results show that the soil aerobic and anaerobic N mineralization rates in the paddy fields with OM and RF treatments increased by 22.92% and 18.27% compared with those with MF treatment. Moreover, soil extracellular enzyme activities under RF and OM treatments significantly increased, which indicated that the main substrate of microbial activity was effective. Correlation analysis indicated that the soil L-glutaminase activity, amino sugar N, amino acid N, and total acid-hydrolysable N contents were positively correlated with soil aerobic and anaerobic N mineralization rates in paddy fields. However, there was a negative correlation between the soil N mineralization rate and soil β-glucosaminidase activity in paddy fields. This finding shows that the yields of early rice and late rice under the RF and OM treatments were significantly higher than those under the MF and CK treatments. Compared with the MF treatment, the yields of double-cropping rice with RF and OM treatments increased by 9.84% and 11.37%, respectively. As a result, the application of straw or organic manure and inorganic fertilizer was effective for improving soil N mineralization, the soil acid-hydrolyzed N content, and extracellular enzyme activities in double-cropping rice fields.

Restricted and repetitive behavior is a core symptom of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) characterized by features of restrictedness, repetition, rigidity, and invariance. Few studies have investigated how restrictedness is manifested in motor behavior. This study aimed to address this question by instructing participants to perform the utmost complex movement. Twenty children with ASD and 23 children with typical development (TD) performed one-dimensional, left-right arm oscillations by demonstrating varying amplitudes and frequencies. The entropy of amplitude and velocity was calculated as an index of kinematic complexity. Results showed that the velocity entropy, but not the amplitude entropy, was significantly lower in ASD than in TD (p < 0.01), suggesting restricted kinematics. Further analysis demonstrated that a significantly higher proportion of the velocity values was allocated at a low-speed level in the children with ASD (p < 0.01). A qualitative comparison of the complex movement with movement at preferred frequency suggested that the children with ASD might be less likely to shift away from the preferred movement. However, our study can be improved in terms of recruiting a larger sample of participants, measuring the level of motivation, and collecting both complex and preferred movements of the same participant.

This study aimed to determine short-term effects of soil tillage and crop residues on soil quality and grain yield of rice in a double-cropping paddy field of southern China. The experiment included four soil tillage treatments: conventional tillage with crop residues incorporation (CT), rotary tillage with crop residues incorporation (RT), no-tillage with crop residues retention (NT), and rotary tillage with crop residues removed as control (RTO). The results showed that the soil bulk density with RTO treatment were higher than with CT and RT treatments. And the soil EC, aggregate mean weight diameter in both wet and dry sieving with NT and RT treatments were higher than that of RTO treatment. CT and RT treatments had the best soil quality and produced the highest rice yield of average 2016–2018. Removing the crop residues gave the lowest yield and less favourable soil physical and chemical characteristics compared to the application of crop residues treatments. It was found that conventional tillage and rotary tillage with crop residues retention is a feasible management technology for farmers producing rice in the double-cropping paddy field of southern China, resulting in a better soil quality and higher yield than with the conventional farmer practice.

The potential nitrification activity (PNA), population size and composition of AOB and AOA communities in both rhizosphere and bulk soil from a long-term (32 year) fertiliser field experiment conducted during early rice and late rice seasons were investigated by using the shaken slurry method and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. The experiment begins in 1986, and including five treatments: without fertiliser input, chemical fertiliser alone, rice straw residue and chemical fertiliser, low organic manure rate and chemical fertiliser and high organic manure rate and chemical fertiliser. The results showed that the application of chemical fertiliser greatly enhanced PNA and AOB abundance, while application of rice straw residue and organic manure increased AOA abundance. Moreover, the results showed that the PNA and population sizes of AOB and AOA were higher in the rhizosphere than in the bulk soil. Cluster and redundancy analyses further indicated that the rhizosphere effect play a more important role in shaping AOA community structure than long-term fertilization. In summary, the results indicated that AOB rather than AOA functionally dominate ammonia oxidation in the double-cropping rice paddy soils, and that rhizosphere effect and fertiliser regime play different roles in the activity and community structures of AOB and AOA.

Soil microbial biomass content is usually regarded as an early indicator of changes in soil quality and soil fertility in paddy fields. Soil microbial biomass turnover is mainly influenced by the application of different fertilizer management systems. However, there is still a need to further investigate the effects of different long-term fertilizer management systems on soil microbial biomass turnover in paddy fields under the double-cropping rice (Oryza sativa L.) system. Therefore, the effects of different long-term (36 years) fertilizer practices on soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC) and soil microbial biomass nitrogen (SMBN) contents, and the flux turnover rates of SMBC and SMBN at the 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm layers in a double-cropping rice field in southern China were investigated in the present paper. The field experiment included four different fertilizer treatments: MF, RF, OM, and CK. The results showed that SMBC and SMBN contents at the 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm soil layers with RF and OM treatments were increased compared with the MF and CK treatments. Compared with the CK treatment, SMBC contents at the 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm soil layers with RF and OM treatments increased by 35.72% and 50.28%, and 32.29% and 42.77%, respectively. SMBN contents at the 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm soil layers with RF and OM treatments increased by 15.52% and 22.70%, and 16.32% and 21.49%, respectively. The fluxes of SMBC and SMBN at the 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm soil layers with RF and OM treatments were significantly higher than those of the CK treatment. This result indicated that the flux turnover rates of SMBC and SMBN at the 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm soil layers with the MF, RF, and OM treatments were significantly higher than those of the CK treatment. Compared with the CK treatment, the flux turnover rates of SMBC and SMBN at the 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm soil layers with OM treatment increased by 46.10% and 48.59%, and 73.39% and 116.67%, respectively. SMBC and SMBN contents, and the flux turnover rates of SMBC and SMBN at the 0–10 cm layer were higher than those of the 10–20 cm layer under the same fertilizer treatment condition. Early rice and later rice yields with RF and OM treatments were significantly higher than those of the MF and CK treatments. As a result, the combined application of crop residue and organic manure with inorganic fertilizer management is a beneficial practice for increasing soil nutrients and rice yield under the double-cropping rice system in southern Chin.

BackgroundPrevious studies have shown promising results in identifying individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by applying machine learning (ML) to eye-tracking data collected while participants viewed varying images (ie, pictures, videos, and web pages). Although gaze behavior is known to differ between face-to-face interaction and image-viewing tasks, no study has investigated whether eye-tracking data from face-to-face conversations can also accurately identify individuals with ASD. ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to examine whether eye-tracking data from face-to-face conversations could classify children with ASD and typical development (TD). We further investigated whether combining features on visual fixation and length of conversation would achieve better classification performance. MethodsEye tracking was performed on children with ASD and TD while they were engaged in face-to-face conversations (including 4 conversational sessions) with an interviewer. By implementing forward feature selection, four ML classifiers were used to determine the maximum classification accuracy and the corresponding features: support vector machine (SVM), linear discriminant analysis, decision tree, and random forest. ResultsA maximum classification accuracy of 92.31% was achieved with the SVM classifier by combining features on both visual fixation and session length. The classification accuracy of combined features was higher than that obtained using visual fixation features (maximum classification accuracy 84.62%) or session length (maximum classification accuracy 84.62%) alone. ConclusionsEye-tracking data from face-to-face conversations could accurately classify children with ASD and TD, suggesting that ASD might be objectively screened in everyday social interactions. However, these results will need to be validated with a larger sample of individuals with ASD (varying in severity and balanced sex ratio) using data collected from different modalities (eg, eye tracking, kinematic, electroencephalogram, and neuroimaging). In addition, individuals with other clinical conditions (eg, developmental delay and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) should be included in similar ML studies for detecting ASD.

Field margin (FM) provides refuges for earthworm survival in rape-rice system after flooding, while the effects of FM with different size on earthworm in arable field (AF) is unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of different FM sizes, a conventional size (FM I) and three expanding sizes (FM II, FM III, FM IV), on earthworm population characteristics in FM and AF. The results showed that the mean abundance of earthworm under the expanding sizes at 1 day and 60 day of flooding after rape harvest was 16.5 and 20.2 times higher than that of FM I, respectively. After stopping flooding, juveniles first migrated from FM to AF, whereas more than half of them were killed by subsequent rotary tillage, and the mortality decreased with expanding FM size. Subsequently, expanding FM sizes promoted earthworm to distribute evenly through the AF at faster speeds. At rape maturity, the mean abundance and total biomass of earthworm of AF under expanding FM sizes were significantly greater than that of FM I, and this positive effect increased with expanding FM size. The results indicated that expanding FM size can mitigate the hazard of rotary tillage to earthworm and promote rapid recovery of earthworm population in AF.

Soil carbon (C) content plays an important role in maintaining or increasing soil quality and soil fertility. However, the impacts of different tillage and crop residue incorporation managements on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from paddy fields under the double-cropping rice (Oryza sativa L.) system in southern China still need further study. Therefore, a field experiment was conducted to determine the impacts of different short-term (5-years) tillage and crop residue incorporation managements on soil organic carbon (SOC) content, SOC stock, and GHG emissions from paddy fields under the double-cropping rice system in southern China. The field experiment included four tillage treatments: rotary tillage with all crop residues removed as a control (RTO), conventional tillage with crop residue incorporation (CT), rotary tillage with crop residue incorporation (RT), and no-tillage with crop residue retention (NT). These results indicated that SOC stock in paddy fields with CT, RT, and NT treatments increased by 4.64, 3.60, 3.50 Mg ha−1 and 4.68, 4.21, and 4.04 Mg ha−1 in 2019 and 2020, respectively, compared with RTO treatment. The results showed that early rice and late rice yield with CT treatment increased by 7.22% and 19.99% in 2019 and 6.19% and 6.40% in 2020, respectively, compared with RTO treatment. A two-year (2019–2020) investigation of GHG results indicated that methane emissions from paddy fields with NT treatment were decreased, but nitrous oxide emissions from paddy fields were increased. The lowest mean global warming potential (GWP) and per yield GWP carbon dioxide were found with NT treatment, compared to RT and CT treatments. Therefore, it was a beneficial practice for maintaining SOC stock and decreasing GHG mitigation under the double-cropping rice system in southern China by applying no-tillage with crop residue retention management.

Microbial community functional diversity is a sensitive indicator of soil quality, soil management such as tillage and crop residue which can affect the microbial community functional diversity of paddy field. However, there is still limited information about the influence of different tillage and crop residue management on rhizosphere soil microbial community functional diversity in a double-cropping rice (Oryza sativa L.) field. Therefore, four tillage treatments were set up in paddy field, tillage treatments were included: conventional tillage with residue incorporation (CT), rotary tillage with residue incorporation (RT), no-tillage with residue retention (NT), and rotary tillage with residue removed as control (RTO). And the effects of CT, RT, NT, and RTO treatments on the average well color development (AWCD), genetic diversity indices and carbon source utilization of rhizosphere soil were studied in the present paper. The results showed that the values of AWCD with CT, RT and NT treatments were higher than that of RTO treatment. It was implied that application of crop residue management resulted in the variation of the carbon utilization efficiency of rhizosphere soil microbial communities. At maturity stages of early and late rice, the Richness indices, Shannon indices and McIntosh indices with CT treatment were significantly higher than that of RTO treatment, and with the order as CT>RT>NT>RTO. Principal component analysis (PCA) results indicated that there were significant differences in carbon substrate utilization patterns among different tillage treatments. Carbohydrates and amino acids were the main carbon resources utilized by rhizosphere soil microbes. Therefore, the combined application of tillage with crop residue management could significantly increase the rhizosphere soil microbial community functional diversity in the double-cropping paddy field of southern China.

Background: Artificial intelligence has an emerging progress in diagnostic pathology. A large number of studies of applying deep learning models to histopathological images have been published in recent years. While many studies claim high accuracies, they may fall into the pitfalls of overfitting and lack of generalization due to the high variability of the histopathological images. Aims and Objects: Use the model training of osteosarcoma as an example to illustrate the pitfalls of overfitting and how the addition of model input variability can help improve model performance. Materials and Methods: We use the publicly available osteosarcoma dataset to retrain a previously published classification model for osteosarcoma. We partition the same set of images into the training and testing datasets differently than the original study: the test dataset consists of images from one patient while the training dataset consists images of all other patients. We also show the influence of training data variability on model performance by collecting a minimal dataset of 10 osteosarcoma subtypes as well as benign tissues and benign bone tumors of differentiation. Results: The performance of the re-trained model on the test set using the new partition schema declines dramatically, indicating a lack of model generalization and overfitting. We show the additions of more and moresubtypes into the training data step by step under the same model schema yield a series of coherent models with increasing performances. Conclusions: In conclusion, we bring forward data preprocessing and collection tactics for histopathological images of high variability to avoid the pitfalls of overfitting and build deep learning models of higher generalization abilities.

ABSTRACT Soil microbial biomass plays a significant role in soils, and it is often used as an early indicator of change in soil quality. Soil microbial biomass is affected by different fertilization management practices. Therefore, the impact of different long-term fertilization management practices on the soil organic carbon (SOC) content, soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC), and soil microbial biomass nitrogen (SMBN), as well as the soil microbial quotient (SMQ) in the tilled layer (0.00-0.20 m) were studied in the present paper, together with grain yield, in a double-cropping rice (Oryza sativa L.) system. The experiment in NingXiang county of Hunan Province, China, begin in 1986, and the experiment included five fertilization treatments: without fertilizer input (CK), mineral fertilizer alone (MF), rice straw residues and mineral fertilizer (RF), 30 % organic matter and 70% mineral fertilizer (LOM), and 60% organic matter and 40 % mineral fertilizer (HOM). The results showed that there is no significant difference in effect on SOC, SMBC, and SMBN contents and on the SMQ in the paddy field with MF treatment compared with the CK treatment at the main growth stages of early and late rice. The SOC, SMBC, SMBN contents, and the SMQ in the paddy field were highest in the LOM and HOM treatments, followed by the RF treatment, at the main growth stages of early and late rice. The results indicated that grain yields of early and late rice with the LOM, HOM, and RF treatments were higher than the yields under the MF and CK treatments. As a result, combined application of organic matter or rice straw residues with mineral fertilizer is a practice available for increasing SOC and microbial biomass contents in double-cropping rice paddy soils.

ABSTRACT Residue management in cropping systems may improve soil quality. However, there are few studies on the effects of residue management on soil aggregation and carbon content in the humin (C-HUM), humic acid (C-HAF) and fulvic acid (C-FAF) fractions in South China. Therefore, the effects on soil aggregation and on the C-HUM, C-HAF, C-FAF from incorporating winter cover crop residues in a double-cropped rice (Oryza sativa L.) system in South China fields were studied. The experiment has been conducted since winter 2004. Five winter cropping systems were used: rice-rice-ryegrass (Ry-R-R), rice-rice-Chinese milk vetch (Mv-R-R), rice-rice-potato (Po-R-R), rice-rice-rape (Ra-R-R) and rice-rice with winter fallow (Fa-R-R). The results indicated that the organic C content in the paddy soil under the Ry-R-R, Mv-R-R, Po-R-R, and Ra-R-R systems was significantly higher than the content in the Fa-R-R system at the early rice and late rice maturity stages. The different sizes of aggregates under the five treatments showed similar trends. The Po-R-R systems had the highest percentage of soil aggregates in each size class and the Fa-R-R systems had the lowest percentage of soil aggregates in each size class in the 0.00-0.05, 0.05-0.10, and 0.10-0.20 m soil depth at the early rice and late rice maturity stages. The C-HUM, C-HAF, and C-FAF increased through long-term application of winter cover crop residues. Statistical analysis showed that the C-HAF under the Ra-R-R systems was significantly higher than that in the Fa-R-R systems at the early rice and late rice maturity stages. The C-FAF and C-HUM under the Mv-R-R systems was significantly higher than the C-FAF and C-HUM in the Fa-R-R systems at the early rice and late rice maturity stages. As a result, the soil organic C content, the soil aggregates in each size class, and the C-HUM, C-HAF, and C-FAF increased from application of winter cover crop residues in double-cropped rice systems.
